Very nice and useful implementation ! And the 90 degree limiter is very original too! Btw, I tend to refer to the main principle as a planetary knob wheel shifter lately, with the two knob wheels and two half pins being the core parts. Are you looking out for a way to add a return-to-center to the shifter or is that impossible? I reckon it operates already quite pleasantly despite having to return it manually.

I'm glad you bring up the 42056 for the knob wheel arrangement. I used the same principle for my rugged supercar, albeit a single pair of knob wheels to shift in both directions. I think we may conclude there was something good and innovative about 42056 after all, even though the implementation of the concept was not brilliant. I can imagine it takes some time to figure out a good implementation, but you sure managed to do that . They make this model an absolute novelty! I think it's not only about accessibility, but also about ease of use. If you would have a DNR shifter and an up-and-down shifter to select gears that are as easy to operate as in Paul's Outlaw and as in my rugged supercar, and they would be accessible via a seriously slanted wind screen, then I wouldn't bother including a HoG shifter either.

Too bad. I have no plans to take it apart any time soon, so yes, I will still have it built during LEGO World. Why do you ask? It would be great to have it on display there as well, but I don't know how to arrange that... That's an amazing distance in such a small country .

For those living nearby Boekelo, Overrijssel (The Netherlands): My rugged supercar will be on display during the 'Bouwen met LEGO'-event from 8th to 10th of August. I won't be there myself, but my twin brother will be happy to demonstrate the model .

The modular setup is amazing! I took a good look at the HoG shifting mechanism. If I'm correct it's a variation on the symbiotic combination of a planetary knob wheel shifter and a #2-connector-based 90-degree limiter, something we've seen in other MOC's too, as well as the separate shifters for up and down shifting (@brunojj1's manual chassis for his MOC-6688 Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 DTM). Nevertheless, you're implementation looks very neat and rock-solid !

Thanks for this very nice review @Jim ! I think the two issues below are related. Because of the 'bending under its own weight' (which is something different from flex in a cruise ship, but that's not my point now ), the panels at the back side of the side-outriggers are slightly off-grid and come in too close to the outriggers. Perhaps reinforcing the chassis / bed will also solve the issue with the outriggers.

BMW E30 Build Thread

This remains to be a very interesting build. One thing I couldn't help noticing: The u-joints for the rear axles are not aligned to obtain constant velocity: -
Wheels and shape remind me of the Lamborghini Countach, which also brings me to the most important point of critique; the area behind the rear window is too flat and too large IMO. I think it would look much better if the rear window and the area behind it would make a single inclined plane just like in the Lamborghini Countach. Another thing that would give it a little more 'speed' is when to rear bumper would sit one stud higher.

Thanks! I enjoy laying these kind of puzzles. Challenge is to avoid features and functions from interfering.

I did now . Cool concept. A nice feature is that is has minimal friction. For a speed model I think 2 speeds should be sufficient. I will try to figure something compact, light and with minimal friction.

A question I have been playing with since the recent speed topics: Is there any example of a car that can actually shift gears while driving? All motorized vehicles with a gearbox I've seen need to stop to shift to another gear. I wonder if it could be useful in a speed car. Theoretically spoken it should be profitable if you can accelerate with a smaller gear ratio and shift to a bigger gear ratio once at speed.

[MOC] Old Styled Race Car
Didumos69 replied to Alex Ilea's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Aha, nice implementation! I have come to think that we could use the general term 'planetary shifter' for this knob wheel arrangement . The knob wheels behave as gears in a planetary system, with - in your case - the upper knob wheel representing a pinion gear, the lower knob wheel representing the sun gear, the lever serving as planetary carrier and the stoppers serving as a stationary ring gear.- 40 replies

Faster in what sense? The engine will rotate twice as fast if you don't block one of the output axles, but use a single axle with normal gears (24t and 16t) instead.- 40 replies

It's turning into a really cool car with some very nice features. Nice steering wheel btw ! I also recognize the gearbox layout. Why did you hold on to the center diff? It does not have 4wd, or does it? If not, I would think you could replace the center diff with a single axle holding a 24t gear and a 16t gear. Final question: Can you tell/show how the shift lever works?- 40 replies
