Control+ General Discussion

Surely you can understand that's a really huge assumption though. The PF and receivers can all be separated throughout the structure, whereas both PU hubs need large cubic volumes to fit. While that may be fine for, say, a combine harvester, excavator, crawler crane or mobile crane, there's going to be a pretty big struggle to fit them into a backhoe, tractor or crane truck. Totally agree here. The buggy motor's prominence on the third party market is evidence of that. That's certainly true. I'm fine with losing stackability. Thing is, must these really be mutually exclusive? If you split the smart hub into a separate battery box and smart receiver, suddenly they can fit in a lot more places AND you get to keep all the extra fancy functions. That alone would at least begin to take the sting off the cost of PU. -

The Sian is 3969 pieces, so I think it might as well sit in the 4k club -
Really sad systemic problems going on in the US at the moment In any case, it's just some plastic and can be replaced There's been some discussion about this a few pages back (can't remember how many exactly). Because of the thicker gear on the new differential, the drive shaft gear would need to be smaller. This would make the engine and gearbox have to spin even faster, so there'd be much more rolling friction. There's no real reason to include the new diff Seriously though, holy hell this would've been magnificent

I can think of a fair few that would need at least five motors to provide a playable experience for a full RC MOC. These would all need to be decked out with a gearbox that can change between operating modes, to avoid having to buy twice the amount of electronics: 1. A backhoe would need outriggers coupled to the gearbox: Front loader mode: drive, steering, lift arm, bucket ,outriggers/gearbox Backhoe mode: hinge/slewing, boom, dipper arm, bucket, outriggers/gearbox 2. A combine harvester: Field mode: drive, steering, PTO, spreader conveyor belt, gearbox Secondary mode: unloader arm, hopper lid, attachment lift, attachment lock, gearbox 3. A knuckle crane truck: Drive mode: drive, steering, outriggers, turntable, gearbox Crane mode: main boom, telescopic boom, telescope, winch, gearbox 4. A tractor with two attachments: Drive mode: drive, steering, PTO 1, PTO 2, gearbox Secondary mode: attachment lock 1, attachment lock 2, attachment lift 1, attachment lift 2, gearbox 5. Madoca1977's wingbody truck only uses one battery box, and four IR receivers. There's no space inside that thing for two smart hubs. I could probably find even more examples but I gotta go study -

Does this mean channel distributors are not possible? -
I think RC gearboxes need to be more heavily employed. Not every RC vehicle needs to be able to use all functions at once.

I totally agree that it's a fair trade off, but only if you really need all those extra features and can afford to have it all in one space. This set's proportions seem to indicate that it didn't really have the space (not by much, but enough to notice). It seems here that the only appropriate place to put the hub was behind the cabin, which ended up lifting its roof height. The only other place would be where 42030-B had it, ahead of the front axle. However, it doesn't look like there'd be enough room here, mainly because of the engine right above it. There's not really any other space in an articulated hauler that can accommodate the large cubic volume of the smart hub without interfering with another part. Having the smart functions is awesome and really adds to the potential of a set, but forcing the electronics to occupy the same space as the batteries can end up tying your hands, especially if you're dealing with a narrow structure like in a hauler. Honestly, I think the electronics should have had their own piece like a flat IR receiver, being powered by a simple battery box. Basically PF but updated.

Personally, I don't think the problem is that it needs to be released all in one go to be good; I'm okay waiting a couple of years for it to fully flesh out. From what I've seen so far though, I can't imagine Lego releasing a power distributor piece, given that they can just charge people big bucks for an extra smart hub they don't need. It'd be nice to be able to only need one hub for five-eight motors.

Lol it was a genuine question. I asked because this comment implies that people have literally been chastising each other over their preferences in colour. Personally I haven't seen any of that. I do see people being vocal about their colour preferences, but they're never hostile towards each other about it. I find it odd too, but I've never really been sold on Lego's kiddie brand image, so I welcome any departure from it

I do like the set's appearance (even if its proportions aren't very accurate), but man you can really see the problems that arise when you settle for giant battery boxes because of an obsession to make everything in as few parts as possible. Flexibility is paramount, and PU doesn't really offer enough yet for its high cost.

Same, I think it's guaranteed that this thing isn't going to have proper pendular live axles. There doesn't seem to be any form of suspension arm in front of the middle axle, like what can be seen on the real A60H

42108 - Mobile Crane
Bartybum replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@Jim thoughts? I'm not sure this strictly falls under discussion of clone brands to begin with, since we're strictly dealing with an LDD MOD/MOC. Without naming anything, I can argue that Technic piece designs were stolen and are now being profited off. It's a two way street. What about your "official Lego set wish" version? It'd just be nice to be able to build a 6-axle mobile crane that I know I already have the parts for If you're adamant though, then there's not much for me to do Β―\_(γ)_/Β― -

I wouldn't lay the blame on TLC for that. If anyone's still using alkalines and doesn't have a recharging station at home then that's their own fault -

PU is the way to go if you're interested in position encoding and all that more customizable basic programming stuff. Unfortunately, despite the interesting functionality of PU, in its current state it's quite inflexible/expensive for larger MOCs. You can't use more than four motors per smart hub, and there's no power distribution pieces that let you connect multiple channels to one socket. For the moment, this means that you lose space to multiple giant smart hubs. I'm sure you've seen the wonderful YouTube videos of MOCs that use 8+ motors to drive independent functions. Those are not going to be possible with PU, unless either they introduce a smart power distribution piece, or people cave in and buy another extortionately expensive smart hub. Personally, I think the second option is far likelier. If you're mainly just interested in having basic motors drive functions, and don't care about advanced electronics, then buy a whole bunch of PF while it's still relatively cheap. Like 2GodBDGlory said, the flexibility of PU leaves a lot to be desired at the moment.- 13 replies
