  1. Yes, that was the conclusion I was coming to - bit of a shame.
  2. Is that a genuine B-model, or just different attachments on the same tractor?
  3. Just finished this one (ably assisted by my 3 year old), and really enjoyed it - 345 parts in a physically compact set makes it a nice intricate build, and I love the sheer variety of pin and connector types included. Looks great, but as others have mentioned, the limited steering is crying out for an improvement mod. I'd agree with Jim's 8/10 assessment; better steering would have taken it up another step.
  4. Good work - does this improve the turning circle at all? Mine arrived yesterday, just waiting for a suitable building opportunity (+/- excitable 3-year-old).
  5. It may also be worth comparing the price of the 42030 Volvo set with the cost of the individual PF elements it contains, to see if that's an economical option (one of each motor, IR, and lots of technic parts).
  6. That's a lovely piece of work - and yes, I'd like to see a video of all the functions working!
  7. Cool! Is the word programmable? I.e. can the yellow barriers adjust automatically?
  8. Wow, how much better does the funny car look in that side shot than it does on the box?
  9. Excellent - by far the best Lego attempt I've seen. Any chance of a video showing how the functions work? (I have a long-standing ambition to build a real one from scratch - they're a great combination of physics, mechanics, electronics, programming, art, sound and music!)
  10. The test car would almost certainly have had the older slotless impossible-to-remove pins, not the thicker slotted pins we've been discussing - just make sure you're talking about the same thing before you buy/sell!
  11. Having had a dark age spell spanning from the mid-90s (8880 and control centre II) to last year (42009), I had definitely noticed a difference in feel with the new pins, but hadn't subjected the change to such scientific scrutiny! Looks like they just increased the internal diameter a little to save plastic. So yes, I'm pretty certain there are (at least) three versions: 1. The "no slot" version from the late 80s/early 90s - I well remember using my little teeth to extract them, and then my dad explaining that this would make them EVEN HARDER to remove! 2. 1st gen slotted version from circa 1994, or possibly even earlier - can't remember whether the compressor truck (92) or whirlwind rescue (91) had these or slotless. 3. 2nd gen slotted - wonder when these came in - around the time of the move to studless, perhaps? Or during TLG's cost-cutting years?
  12. By that logic, a 12-tooth might manage a reasonable mesh with the turntable at a spacing of 4 across and 2 up. (A spacing of 4.47 vs the ideal 4.5 - might be a bit tight - it'll depend on how much tolerance they leave between gear teeth.) Alternatively, one might try an 8-tooth at a spacing of 4 across and 1 up, or 3 across and 3 up, though again, these might be a little tight. Someone with a new turntable want to experiment and report back?
  13. Sorry if I missed this: is there a deadline for voting? Want to do so, but not sure when I'll be able to devote enough time to do it justice.
  14. And am I the only one for whom adding a licence does precisely nothing? (Or in fact, if a price increase is involved, makes a set worse!). I'm interested in the building experience, the mechanisms, the complexity, and the overall look of the thing - a badge doesn't add anything for me.
  15. That is fascinating, yet wonderfully awkward! Interesting outrigger motion on the trailer of the B-model - will need to go watch again.
  16. Mine doesn't quite sit down onto the cab either, unless pulled down slightly. It seems there's enough slack in the structure, mainly at the turntable joint, for it to cope.
  17. Another excellent update. I'd never noticed the turquoise cabin interior of the tow truck before - eew!
  18. I think (probably like many here), I appreciate the colour coding as a functional thing when searching for parts and building, but am not such a fan of the looks of the final result.
  19. No, 42009's outriggers are staggered as well. This is pretty standard for (real) cranes/trucks with this kind of horizontally-out/vertically-down outrigger so as to get the feet spread wide enough. For a symmetric outrigger arrangement, you need either legs which go straight down, a shortened reach (up to half the width of the vehicle body), or are angled (like 8854, for example).
  20. On GBC-ish theme, I've been thinking of trying to make one of those classic ball bearing obstacle courses like screwball scramble or the rock'n'roll maze. You'd want aa mixture of automated obstacles and manual controls, plus a reliable way of returning balls which have fallen off; bonus points if you can incorporate a timer mechanism...
  21. Fair enough - you've built yourself a mammoth enough task as it is! It'd be cool to see a selection of the best b-models documented someday, but I appreciate that would open up the "but what about my favourite model 8XXX?!"-type can of worms... (on top of the heavy additional work required). Excellent work so far - really enjoying the site.
