The Best Technic B-Model
Josephiah replied to AOW's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
8485 T-Rex. Pretty much an A-model in its own right (and I think it used some parts that the helicopter didn't, e.g. flex system bits). -

LEGO TECHNIC C-MODEL INDEX ***Index under construction - please add your suggestions and comments to the C-Model Index Discussion topic here, rather than commenting on this topic. This is a (slow!) work in progress, so please be patient *** Welcome to the C-Model Index! It aims to help you answer the question: "I've got set (X)XXXX - what can I build with it?" (or "I can't bear to mix up my sets' parts", or "I only want to take apart one model at a time" ). Missing a great C-model? Broken link? Wrong info? Let me know in the discussion topic. There have been some excellent alternate builds or C-Models showing up lately. I'm a big fan of these, as they open up new opportunities for those of us without a huge collection of spare parts, and in my view every one increases the value of the set in question. It's obviously a big challenge for the designer to work from a restricted pool of parts, and it's clear that certain sets lend themselves well to alternate builds. I also get frustrated when I come across a great C-Model topic, which I then can't find again later. So as my small contribution to EB, here is what I hope might become the definitive C-Model index, helping us all keep track of these great models, and in many cases, their instructions. Rules for inclusion: Uses parts from only one set; That's about it! Index structure: taking into account the useful suggestions of other eurobrickers, I've decided on the following structure: An index of sets is further down this first post (organised by date and set number); Each set will have its own post below. This keeps the index organised by set, so that all the C-Models for a given set are kept together; Each set's post includes, where known, the details of EB topic, youtube video, instructions, and part count; Sets' posts are listed in no particular order - use the links in this index post to find the set you want; If a set number doesn't appear in the list, it's because either A) no C-Models exist yet (in which case go and design one!), or B) I haven't found them (in which case point me towards it by commenting in the discussion topic); C-Models are listed in no particular order. Where individuals have listed their creations as C-Model, D-Model, etc, I have ignored this and called them all C-Models, because each designer's classification doesn't work when all compiled together; Part counts are taken for a variety of sources, and may therefore not quite match up (and can lead to percentages over 100%, for example); Limits on the number of media files per post means some (42039, I'm looking at you!) are split up into multiple posts. 2016 42055 Bucket Wheel Excavator (5) [New] 42054 CLAAS XERION 5000 TRAC VC (7) [New] 42053 Volvo EW160E (1) [New] 42052 Heavy Lift Helicopter (2) [New] 42048 Race Kart (4) [New] 42045 Hydroplane Racer (1) 2015 42043 Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3245 (5) 42042 Crawler Crane (6) 42039 24 Hours Race Car part 1 / part 2 (15) [Updated] 42038 Arctic Truck (8) [Updated] 42037 Formula Off-Roader (1) 42036 Street Motorcycle (3) 42035 Mining Truck (3) 2014 42025 Cargo Plane (4) 42024 Container Truck (7) 42022 Hot Rod (3) 42021 Snowmobile (2) 42020 Twin Rotor Helicopter (3) 2013 42010 Off-road Racer (1) 42009 Mobile Crane MKII (8) 42008 Service Truck (4) 42000 Grand Prix Racer (8) 2012 9398 4x4 Crawler (6)

Hi all, Finally managed to make a bit of headway in the background on this (sorry, real life got in the way!). New index topic is here (very much still WIP). A couple of requests/questions: Jim (or another mod) - please could you change the title of this topic to "C-Model Index Discussion"? When I try to add a reply post to my own original post, the forum seems to combine it all into one post - is there any way to change this behaviour? Will it stop doing this after a certain amount of time has elapsed, for example? Or does somebody else need to post in between (which would be annoying)? Edit: It turns out time is the answer the the 2nd query

Love that! -
Nice review - one of my favourite sets when I was little, sadly sold onto a friend for a criminally low price when I was a teenager scraping together funds for some crap CD (what was I thinking!). One thing that I don't think anyone picked up on about the B-model is how clever the pneumatic system is, automatically switching itself in a recurring loop - a brilliant piece of programming work with no electronic control.
-
I see where you're coming from, but in your scenario, how would you know which model you wanted without doing some browsing first, in which case having them grouped might be better? My thinking is that when you come to the index thinking "I've got set 420xx, I wonder what I can build with it?" you can click one link to get to the whole group of c-model options for that set, and choose which one you fancy.
-
Doing a little bit of index collation in the background just now. We're up to 64 entries already (thanks to BusterHaus for tracking down many of these), and that's without tackling Tomik's C-model collection (yet). Good work folks, and some excellent looking designs in here that I never would have come across otherwise.
-
Yes, my thinking is moving towards something like that, though I might do it as each official set has all its C-models grouped in one comment, rather than an individual comment for every model. Can see benefits either way.
-
That sounds good. I'll keep collating the info for everyone's suggestions and then we can work out how best to display it. I think a separate index to the main model index might be better, but I don't feel strongly about it :)
-
I did consider putting a minimum part count percentage as a criterion for inclusion, but decided against it on the grounds that: a) size of model is not necessarily correlated with quality so we might unnecessarily exclude some great contributions; b) builders can make their own mind up about which models look attractive to them to build! I'll include part count where it's known, just because it's interesting, and because there is a certain skill in using up as many parts as possible :) Wow, Buster's on a roll! What have I got myself into?! Look forward to checking these out when I find a clear couple of hours to do it justice...
-
Thanks for the enthusiastic suggestions, everybody - keep 'em coming! (Though you may need to be patient with my update speed :) ) Yes, I think you may be right. Though it's nice to have the videos embedded they do take up a lot of space, so a "thumbnail + contracted info" approach might be best. (It really wants a big table, but I haven't found a way to implement that on here - anyone know if it's possible?)
-
Yes, that's the plan - I'll be working through the other sets like I did for 42009 above with links, videos, links to instructions, etc And yes, good shout on 42038 - there's at least a couple for this set - can you provide a topic link? (I'm not convinced the EB search picks up everything, as different builders call them different things, even if they do note it's a C-model.) Yes, though many of those are multi-set models, which don't quite fit the C-model idea for me - at some point I'll trawl through the entry topic though. Exactly! And thanks for the suggestion and link. Thanks for that, hadn't seen any for 9398 before. Yes, 42039 has jumped up my own shopping list for precisely that reason. And yes, I'll be working through filling in details like I did for 42009 above (though updates may be a little sporadic!)

Hi all, This topic is for discussion of the new C-Model Index (under construction here), and for suggestions of C-Models for inclusion. I hope the index will help us all keep track of the great C-Models people have created, and in many cases, their instructions. I've managed to find a good collection to get started, but no doubt I will have missed some, so please tell me any you'd like to see added (or any mistakes/missing details/etc), and I'll add them in future updates. Rules for inclusion: Uses parts from only one set; That's about it! Where possible, I'll list details of EB topic, youtube video, instructions, and part count. Models detailed on EB are obviously favoured, but I've already come across one or two from elsewhere which I feel deserve to be included. They are listed in no particular order. Where individuals have listed their creations as C-Model, D-Model, etc, I have ignored this and called them all C-Models, because each designer's classification doesn't work when all compiled together. To keep this manageable, I'm going to try and release these in groups according to the original set. To start with, here's all the C-Models I have managed to round up for the set that got me out of my dark age - and perhaps its no surprise, given the sheer number of useful parts: [EDIT: moved 42009 into the index.] Hope this is useful - suggestions welcome. Jo
