Those are wonderful! I've had in mind for ages to attempt something similar with 42009, but perhaps more like a game (something like Screwball Scramble or the Rock'n'Roll Maze - classic 90s toys), but have never yet found the time.

I hope this one's still going to be entered! Any progress? -
Nice idea! I wonder if you could solve the backlash issue by making the motors run against a (gentle) force pushing the other way, so that the teeth in the gear train are always pressed in one direction. Perhaps by hanging a weight on a string (maybe with a pulley) over the edge of the table, or with a lever mechanism incorporated into the carriage involving a shock absorber or elastic band?

Great idea - now you just need to add some interesting things to aim at. Drop targets, ramps and so on. Is there any way you could rig up switches or touch sensors so that stuff happens when you hit them with the ball? What does the light sensor do?

Much of the studless building process feels to me like a chess game where you're constantly having to think "right, in three moves' time I'm going to need a pinhole exactly HERE, and in THIS orientation". This part allows you to place that pinhole exactly where you like with less disruption to the rest of your structure, so it's a great little convenient shortcut! Fascinating project, by the way - will be following this with interest.

There was a basic (2-axis) version in the 8891 ideas book from 1991, which I think was probably buildable from the first control centre set - see about 2/3 down the page here: http://lego.brickinstructions.com/en/lego_instructions/set/8891/rb There were lots of great models in there - I remember building the walking dinosaur and the cable car, and bodging my way towards approximations of the ones I didn't have the right sets for... -

Great to see someone taking on this challenge - looking forward to seeing how your get on. Quick question though: do Lego pneumatics move quickly enough to make this work at a decent speed? -
Thanks for the great review, Jim. How do you feel about the "B-model is only a different attachment" thing? The lack of a full B-model is the one major turn-off for me with this set...

Just noting a few more recent c-model topics for next time I get round to an update: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=136858 - 42039 Baja 1000 buggy http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=136859 - 42043 transport airplane http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=133573 - 42048 formula 1 (x2) http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=136440 - 42030 Texas DeRanger

It's funny going back to some of the studded sets - just disassembled my space shuttle and built the submarine: in a 1368 piece set, a mere 45 are 2L black pins, and only 8 3L. (Unusual even in that era, I think - the previous 2 years' flagships, the control centre II and the supercar, both had many more.)
-
Finished it last night - you're right, it is rather fine - cool set of functions, excellent building experience (partly nostalgia trip, partly I love the proper 50-piece challenges every step, and partly I prefer the bottom-to-top build process of the studded era), and that reversing gearbox is a lovely piece of Lego engineering. The overall quality of the whole set, both A and B, should put this firmly at the top of everyone's eBay list. Best B-model though? Still mulling that one over - as my next old set to retrieve from the loft to build is the 8485 T-Rex!

Just noting down Wiseman_2's snow groomer so I don't lose it later: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=134333 Some seem to have got the impression that you have to apply to get your models included. To be clear, this is not a hall of fame - the intention is to include every C-model, without making any kind of judgement on design quality (builders will naturally choose their favourites to try out with no help from me!). The reason for many models not being included YET is simply my slow progress at updating

Looks good! The best place to make suggestions to get added to the C-model index is in the discussion thread here: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=122182 - it's a slow moving project, but I'll get there one day! -
Thanks for the suggestions everyone - some I already have noted down, others that are new to me. Yes, thanks, his great index has been suggested (along with one or two other people's) - for those prolific builders who already have well-structured indexes of their own, I'll probably find a way of including a link to the whole index rather than to every individual model.

Thanks for the suggestions, WvG_853. Yes, of course. Apologies for the slow/lack of progress, in the middle of my busiest month at work, pretty much ever...
