[WIP] Ultimate 42009
BusterHaus replied to grum64's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Upgrading the wheelchair with them? Great idea, but wait for the app update so it steers properly. You should probably make a separate WIP topic, though. -
One of the most active competition categories using Mindstorms is Sumo Bots. Two robots are set up on a circular mat and there are a number of ways to get points, but the simplest goal is to be the last robot on the mat. There are ton of videos to watch. This competition reminds me a lot of BattleBots. A lot of the Lego designs I've seen focus more on looks than performance, which is great, as one of the most effective robots on BattleBots had a pretty boring design. As for biped competitions, I don't think you'll see those unless the next iteration of Mindstorms shrinks the control brick drastically. It is very difficult to build a stable, fast biped with the current components, so the competitions would be over quickly (when a robot toppled over) or move at a snail's pace. Wheeled robots are definitely the way to go if spectators are to have fun.

WIP AMG G500 4x4²
BusterHaus replied to Zerobricks's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The rollovers made me wince. Those poor bricks! I love the combination of speed and low gear performance in this MOC. Looks like a perfect selection of gear ratios for the motors, battery and weight involved. Awesome job.- 62 replies

Sugar Cube Machine

Fun to watch, as usual. How do you control the water? -
I tried it here, here are the results with 960 mL juice boxes: Here is the structure as seen from the top: The structure should be mounted upside-down from what you see here if you decide to use it. It still has a bit of flex to it and I don't think you can eliminate it. That being said, it can be reinforced by adding the body of the car. The weak point will be the door openings, but you can reinforce that section with the center console stretching under the seats and by adding another layer of beams at the door openings, just like the picture of the real car shows. I get the impression that the final product can be quite rigid, but not by having a separate chassis and body.
-
Try 5x7 frames with long beams on top and bottom, like you have now. They are more rigid than a middle layer made of beams. You can also use the seats themselves as a structural element.

Silicon has a lower density when solid than when liquid. There is also a very good explanation as to why water is denser than its frozen form. About solar panels: One day, the sun will die and so will the energy provided by it. So solar panels and the sun are not a PPM. Think of it this way: every object has a finite amount of energy in it. A battery, the sun, a drop of gasoline, even a grain of sand. The energy is stored in the atoms that make up the object. When atoms stop moving (at 0 Kelvin), all the energy is gone from the object. Since transferring that energy to another object always incurs losses (no matter how minute), your perpetual motion machine will eventually run out energy. It will also never create more energy than is stored in it, even if there were no losses. Unless you can provide scientific proof to back up your assertion that perpetual motions can exist, this discussion is moot. Changing naming conventions and stating your beliefs/feelings about the subject is not an effective way to convince anyone that you can break the laws of thermodynamics.

VW Transporter Mark 3 (WIP)
BusterHaus replied to roxXx5's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The cabin has a very nice shape to it. I really like the bottom of the windshield, too. Nice job so far. Why the switch to L motors? I photograph all my stuff with a simple point-and-shoot. One day I'll graduate to something more high end, but in the meantime it does the job and you can learn a lot about photography by simply switching to manual settings. If your camera has this option, try it out. You'll be surprised by how far you can push a cheap camera.- 10 replies

Future MOCs
BusterHaus replied to Epic Technic's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
A ball peen hammer will also do the job. Not that I advocate modified Lego bricks. It's just a quick way to achieve that look. -
It's only controversial to people who haven't taken a thermodynamics or physics class. Most courses address perpetual motion machines and explain why they are not possible. Even ones that seem to go on for ever in comparison to a human lifespan have a finite amount of energy to give. This was a cute April Fools joke, but let's not get carried away.

I like it but I don't want to know how you insert the battery pack. -
Lego motors replacement
BusterHaus replied to Renamed99's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Those motors can run on the regular Lego battery packs, but not at full power. They use the battery in the RC unit to achieve full performance. -
Lego motors replacement
BusterHaus replied to Renamed99's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I think the better way to approach this is to consider the amount of energy available from the batteries. Since that's a constant, swapping out motors will have a minimal impact on the power available at the output. I'm sure you can find some motors that are slightly more efficient (less energy lost to heat, friction, vibration and noise) but if you're interested in really boosting the power, consider running the stock motors with a different battery. Be warned that you'll shorten the life of the motor by using a higher voltage. -
I like the use of PF for this creation. I explored building a snake controlled by Mindstorms and movement without wheels gets complicated quickly, so a simple solution like yours is very admirable.

Peel them off and reapply. Give your wife some entertainment - she should enjoy the build process too! -

What a beautiful MOC. Any reason why the cables were not routed inside the arm? It's a minor distraction, it doesn't diminish the kudos this project deserves. -
lego guitar concept
BusterHaus replied to PKW's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I like the tuning mechanism, as odd-looking as it is. Somewhat related: a guitar-playing project was posted on the Mindstorms forum a few days ago. It's quite well executed. -

Fantastic progress! How do you handle the stickers? They're on straighter than most of mine. -

Nice custom tracks. They look like they have a ton of grip. Is it your own design?
