  1. Wear and tear has its effects too. I had some bricks when I was a kid that got so worn that they would fall apart if held upside down. Lots of wear in a short amount of time...
  2. I am a fan of the Fire Brigade modular #10197 and wanted to expand on the look. I have the City Ambulance set and wanted a place to put it in my modular city. So I designed this building for it. Its similar to the FB, but not exactly the same, its kind of a cousin to it. I would put it next to the FB on one side to look like it was an addition to it. It is essentially a place for the paramedics to live when on duty. The height of the parking bay had to be that size to accommodate the ambulance. It sort of seems too tall, and I suppose the ambulance is a little too big a scale for the modulars (6 studs wide). Oh well, I like it enough to think about getting the bricks together to build it. The interior consists of a stair from the front door to the upper level living quarters for the paramedics. This building addresses the missing features in the FB, like beds and a bathroom. There are 2 beds a computer workstation, a kitchen and eating table. There are storage cabinets for supplies. Lots of accessories. The bathroom has a shower, toilet and sink. I know the window has a nice view of the WC...haha, but its high enough above the street to not be too visible ;-). The rear ground level has a storage space and perhaps an office, with windows out. I am still not sure about the color scheme, but for now, it works for me. tan gray and the dark red. Black window frames and doors. Comments most welcome!
  3. As I am toying with purchasing a second 'Pet Shop' I was wondering how many others buy multiple copies of the sets. So far, I have gotten 2 Town Halls, 2 Grand Emporiums, 2 Parisian Restaurants. 1 each of the Palace Cinema, Fire Brigade and PetShop. I came too late to the table for the others. I used most of the second Town Hall to build my Ideas project, and the others I plan to increase the size of my GE, and maybe MOC something from the PR. If anything, they are good sources of a lot of brick for the price. With the intro of a new modular soon, I am thinking I might get the 2nd Pet Shop for the parts, and possibly reworking it into my own design. I guess the possibilities are endless. What are your thoughts/plans?
  4. I know, I know, it's going to be Jim Rockford's trailer parked on a 32x32 empty lot! ;-) sorry, I couldn't resist! ;-)
  5. Lots of nice ideas! I am trying to collect bottles etc to create a liquor store type display, any chance of something like that?
  6. I wonder if the Free Exclusive Holiday set is because of so many comments that there wasn't much of a workshop in Santa's Workshop...LOL
  7. I will be 52 in September, time speeds up the older I get, it seems. I just got back to LEGO in ernest this year, after having dropping out into the dark ages about 1974, I think. I still have 3 old sets from back then, I gave away my big box of mixed bricks to my niece. Some of them were so well used they wouldn't stick together anymore if you turned them upside down..LOL. I got the Robie House back when it came out, and that got me thinking about LEGO again, and then, when I 'retired' I have been buying a lot. I have several of the Architecture sets, modular buildings, some City sets, several Creator Expert sets, and 2 Technic sets. Also, I have been buying brick from BrickLink to do my own MOC's too. One of which I have on LEGO Ideas as a project. I call it the Mayor's House. (Any support for it would be most appreciated!) See below... I am starting to get some flack from the family, on how many bricks I have. I did a Basebrick inventory and told them how many bricks I have. Its just shy of 60K now. I know that is a lightweight by some standards!
  8. There are two versions of the S@H site, the desktop version and the mobile version. I prefer the desktop version, it has more links, and doesn't screw up as much. I have all sorts of problems using my iPad with the mobile version, like if you hover over some photos for a set, seems random, it will add it to the shopping cart! That is annoying. I have a bookmark link to the S@H site, and I know that works right. Redirects from other sites can be iffy, they are for adding in special pricing for a discount or to get credits back to the originating site for hits...stuff like that... I am using Safari for nearly everything, and have noticed the S@H site has been very slow this whole week.
  9. Maybe, never can tell.
  10. Growing up we only had cats, with a couple parakeets and fish tank thrown in. Now, I have 2 cats, one a stray that I adopted about 11 years ago, he is about 14 now we think. I got a 2nd cat about a year ago, from the animal shelter. They had, and still have over 100 cats to adopt, most of which don't, so I went down and got one, for free. She has been a real stand offish cat since. Won't let anyone near her, unless she is eating or so sleepy. I also have a fish pond in the garden with a lot of fish, I like to feed them and watch them swim around. They have gotten quite large, since I refilled the pond, about 8 years ago, now. As for reptiles, I have at least 2 lizards about 6" long, and a few salamanders (amphibians) in the garden, they are always around, though I can't really claim they are my pets! Haha!
  11. They always have that asterisk after the freebies that says 'while supplies last.' The freebies were always added into the order summary. My order was last Thursday, so up till at least then they were available.
  12. I placed an order for the VW Bus #10220 on 21 Aug., then the next day it was out of stock. Then I got a shipped email, which turned out to be just the mini mini cooper poly. It is supposed to come tomorrow, if the tracking can be believed. Ironically, the out of stock VW set I originally ordered is supposed to arrive the same day, shipped on the 24th...go figure how that worked out. Oh I see this morning it is back to being out of stock. It is soon to be sold out, I think. The mini mini is done, they are giving out a Chima poly now, for orders over $50
  13. I need photos...haha... Being a building guy, I want to see the beach hut and toy/grocery...
  14. I had no agenda when I made the post, my original comment made no attempt to make one. I just wanted to share how LEGO was used to illustrate a point. Sorry to have sent anyone off the deep end.
  15. I got my Trevi Fountain set, and decided to make a small change. I think it looks better this way. I have never seen it in person, but from all the photos I have looked through, this seems better...to me..to each his own, maybe. Any opinions?
  16. I did a search on this topic, and it really hasn't been discussed in a while. I was curious about what other's favorite colors might be. I have been gravitating towards the darker earth tones, I have noticed. My favorites are: dark orange dark brown dark red dark tan medium dark flesh I like to build buildings mostly, and want to try and work some of these colors into everything in some way. Trouble is, a lot of the the necessary parts to build a MOC are not available in each of those colors... so there will always be a need for the light and dark bluish gray and white.
  17. I came too late to the modular party, missed out on everything prior to Fire Brigade.
  18. ^ I took a photo of them together. I guess it would depend on how long the pieces you are buying and other variables, but you can see the comparison in the photo. That darn indentation on the bottom takes a chunk of space out of both sizes.... The tall cup is narrower at the bottom, but taller than two of the small cups stacked. There is also a fine art to packing them, if you want to get maximum value from your purchase....
  19. I was at the Disneyland LEGO store last week, and wanted to fill a large cup, but could only find the small cups. I asked and they said they only had the smalls, but I would get a discount on two small cups, I think he said 50 cents off..or something. I didn't think that was a good deal, I think you can fit more into one large cup versus 2 smalls. I think because that store gets super packed with people, they decided to just have small cups. There were a lot of bricks on the floor. I went back a second time in the early morning and the crowds were not there yet, and it was a great store to visit.
  20. I've made 39 orders this year, since getting back into LEGO myself. My average order is between $15-20. Smallest order was $2.50, for a sheet of stickers I needed. Largest was $106 for some sets I wanted. I have found it quite hard to get those last few parts you always seem to need near the end of a build. No one seller ever has all the bits you need. Lately I have been building up lists to make the shipping more cost effective. Its not always doable, depends on how much time I want to spend waiting to build a list of items. I trawl for parts I 'might' need in the future also, for some of the dozens of ideas I have in my head!
  21. Arrr, he wants to be a pirate! ;-) My crane driver from that set has both his hands also..
  22. I know when I have to have someone in the house, like a worker whom I don't know, I don't want to draw attention to the Lego, though everyone who sees it, wants to go over and look...I would hope not to think about coming back, and breaking in. I know how some people can tell people they know and next thing you know, its a target. I know thats how a lot of guns get stolen... I always set the alarm system when I go out.
  23. Thanks for the help! I checked again and it is settings you can change, I never thought you could make those changes. I found what my settings are, which must be the defaults, because I haven't ever looked at the settings tab...duh..LOL I will turn on all those stats to see them next time. (got to love the way they spell Chinese on there...LOL)
  24. I try to stick with sellers that have all the costs on the splash page or store terms page. I have tried a few times to find out what the actual shipping would be for sets, and have only gotten about 50% success rate. Some sellers, apparently, don't think its worth their while to actually respond to an inquiry. I just make note of them, and then avoid in the future. My one peeve with BL, is that most sellers base what they charge on shipping on the weight of the purchased parts. When you are ordering though, the weight info is not included. So it would be a tedious task to add up all the weights to get a total...I just guess, and have not felt I was charged extra most of the time. I try to only use sellers that don't tack on some ridiculous handling fee, there are plenty of sellers that don't do that.
  25. I never seriously considered building my house. It is a low, wide, single story 'ranch' style. It would look like one enormous roof if I did it in Lego...I prefer building fantasy buildings, like my Ideas MOC house. :-)
