Brilliant. Lovely. True. Real. As in it was like that ... Even the lighting is absolutely right. Been there, loved it. Still do. This is fanastic. You captured everything - the look (and feel) of the machines, the look (and feel) of the room - and the moment, when you sit in that chair, program is running after a million tries - and you think: This is all crazy - but it works. Turn off the lights (it is 2:30 am) and take the bike in front of the building and head home. Cool. The good'ol days. I don't miss them >that< much (but I do) - what I really miss is the moment sitting in that chair before leaving. All the best, Thorsten

It really is both: Space (superb) and Train (superb as well). Space and this train go along very, very well. You captured both: The demands in space (as: on a planet that is demanding), as well as the "train idea": Running cargo and transporting people through rough terrain. Very well done. All the best, Thorsten

... because they are from the past - or in another word - adults. Never knowing - but guessing, interpreting, projecting, hoping, trying, imagine, "measuring" - what kids want. Very nicely phrased @Henchmen4Hire! All the best, Thorsten

Oh my. Who ever came up with that kind of wheel set (it is not a "set" it is one wheel - and two of these is not a set. It remains two), must be into cars. I cannot imagine anything else. Discarding the axle on a >not< plain surface is insane. A car with individual suspension and this and that (visit the Technic Forum ... they do magic in this regard) is perfectly matching this kind of wheel attachment. But a train running on clearly defined track geometries: Go away. Regardless of how many ball bearings you use: Their >mounting< will define performance. And surely increase friction. As they do in the video. It is not the bearing, it is the angle. It is always instructive to look at what the world does. Do the use axles on trains? Yes. Is there a train that does not run on axle connected wheels? I believe not, but it may be. I'd call that crazy due to the clearly defined track width not allowing much tolerance, if at all. So - TLG is either above friction rules - or they have no clue - or they don't care. Nifty pick ups or not. As far as I am concerned, this is crazy. Best Thorsten

Hi David, I am not sure, but I believe @Cosmik42's software communicates with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices only, whereas the NXT uses some sort of Serial over Blueltooth protocol, which seems to be entirely different. At least this is what I learned, when starting to program with the BLE hub device types. Best Thorsten

I have no idea, none-what-so-ever how you guys do what you do, particularly in the Technic forum. And this MOC is beyond belief. I guess I said that here before, but it just goes on and on and on ... @DugaldIC: I am really not into cars, but this model has blown me away. Your building skills and techniques that is. I simply don't get it ... wonderful. There is something else though, which I personally find equally stunning, as @nerdsforprez has so nicely voiced: And may I add: .. and share the building instructions as if it was the most natural thing to do. Thank you very much for sharing and all the very best! (Tipping hat, slight nod, and a little bow) Thorsten

That is so true. @knotian: A "desktop computer" is such a device as well. And as long as there was some sort of "smart" electronics submerged in LEGO bricks (take the RCX as example) there was an external device necessary, to get it unfolding. Without computer, an RCX is dead dumb. The thing is, they shifted from "computer" (laptop, dektop) to "mobile device". Maby naturally - I sometimes ask myself: Who knows what a "desktop" is? Just forgetting that a 2018 Dell mobile workstation I am running is more or less the same - it is just mobile. What I find irritating though is that the wonderful aps run on smart devices only, and there are two store varieties to get them from; either this or that, but not the other. But this is as it is ... time runs fast. Things come and go. And: Get a BLE stack, install that on Win10, read the LEGO BLE documents and off you go. No firmware updates though ... it is all crazy. But then: This is also emerging technology as well. Who knows what is coming ... Best Thorsten

[MOC] Stadler/Vossloh Euro 4000 - Medway Matilde
Toastie replied to Sérgio's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Wow, this one is - as all your MOCs - regardless of built in bricks or rendered from a surely complex LDD model. Simply incredible! I believe the "perspective settings" (if there are any, I am just guessing; other programs do have that) either in the rendereing or modeling framework was not set, is that possible? Simply due to the length of the model, the linear perspective is not that favorable. IMHO only! The model is very nice! Best Thorsten -
I have one ... it turns the "head" of an R2D2 ... well, I believe this is going to change. Thanks for the links! They are very helpful. And just because both of you Italians are "here": All the best for you Davide and Emanuele! Have a very nice evening, Thorsten
-
Davide, this is very nicely done! The very moment one sees it, 4.5V with 3 digit set numbers comes warmly to mind. One Question: The micro motor does not have that much torque. It spins rather slowly so that is perfect. As you are not gearing down even further: Did you try it? I am sorry, I must have missed the Badoni "Sogliola" model of yours. Best Thorsten

LEGO could use Playmobil for inspiration!
Toastie replied to ArneNielsen's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Is it just me, or is there more to it? Today I was at the local Smythe's (is it that? - it was Toys'r'us before) and now Playmobil have a "movie" as well. There is so much fuzz about Lepin and what are their not to mention here brand names - but Playmobil is happily sitting next to LEGO in any store I know; and it appears as if there are 1:1 copies of virtually everything. Do they cooperate or does one company simlpy not care what the other does - or do they both live in some sort of synergism? Best Thorsten -
Define average people ... "Average" people as in ... "illiterate gearbox gurus"? Or "illiterate mechanical engineers"? To be honest, in this regard I am not even average but >way below< any measure of average. But as part of "people" being average is not that bad at all. Who knows ... maybe being "average" with respect to people, allows to be above average when it comes to uncountable ways of being skilled ... All I am saying is: I am totally blasted away with what you guys are discussing here, but not on an "average people" level. All the best and rock on with your discussion!!! Thorsten

Ohhhhh yessss !!!!! That would be so cool. Now I have a working Sinclair ZX81 ... and a Sinclair Spectrum with some custom hardware I added back then in the good'ol days. Hmmm ... Best Thorsten

The larger the scale, the more LEGO "pieces" CAN do it. Building 6 wide is - tough, as far as I am concerned. OK, 7 wide gives "some" flexibility, and X-wide even more. But: CAN, as in CAN. I have no idea, no clue, none-what-so-ever, how you accomplish the "CAN" part. This is breathtakingly nice. Wonderful. Congratulations on this achievement! All the best Thorsten

The Future of Lego Space. (opinions, ideas, discussion)
Toastie replied to Trekkie99's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
Dear @Aanchir thank you very much for your suggestion: Implemented! Emmet's transformed house has two kinds of weapons though: The laser type (which is now a "clearing away debris device") and the bullet type. I like the idea of firing paint bullets ... as they make pretty pictures. (When graduating from high school there were two really appealing routes for me: Art or chemistry. I took the latter but never lost contact to the former. With regard to your suggestion and the theme of this thread: Should the laser not work, I'd be happy to give it a "bullet of paint" try ...) Thanks again (very much) and all the best, Thorsten- 991 replies

The smaller the scale, the harder it is. Everywhere in LEGO world. Even with availability of all these smal nifty novel pieces: It requires so much vision and knowledge. Very, very well done! Best wishes Thorsten

I'd like to learn more about the plant-based plastic. They make a lot of fuzz of that. But what does is mean? The plastic will biodegrade in no time? Or: The plastic is still what is was, but instead of crude oil, something plant-based was used? You can make virtually everything from plants or other natural resources. But that may not be envirionmentally friendly at all. And after all, the final product is "plastic". When it comes to LEGO bricks and pieces usually as in: No way back. As we want to still have them clutch in a century from now. But who knows. Maybe some chemical company actually paved the way from plants to PE (guess the floppy tree branches are PE), which has less impact on the environment than making it from crude oil. All the best, Thorsten

Ouhh - looking at the first couple of renderings ... is it me or is there a pirate flag hissed ... It is impressive. Best Thorsten

The Future of Lego Space. (opinions, ideas, discussion)
Toastie replied to Trekkie99's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
Exactly. This is why I believe that #70831 Emmet's Dream House is exactly that: It will >never< happen in our lifetime or the next. The conversion of a dream house into a space compatible dream house. It is radical and beautiful. Different. Not seen before. No grey-blue-trans-yellow - but all deep space. Plus: it has weapons as well. OK, which I "transformed" to paint filled bullets/rockets. As Oddball says in "Kelly's Heroes": "... We got our own ammunition, it's filled with paint. When we fire it, it makes... pretty pictures. Scares the hell outta people!". I simply don't like weapons, that's all. Thing is: For me, this set is totally space. Best Thorsten- 991 replies

@teflon, is it still together or at least sort of? If so: As @aminnich suggested: A list of issues may be of help. To make one thing absolutely sure: I have NO clue what to do about your issues, but I know for SURE that folks in this forum do. This place is incredible. All the best Thorsten

Brickworld 2019 retrospective and some of my MOCs
Toastie replied to zephyr1934's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I wish I'd even get that - considering that I have no clue what "looks 12" means What a wonderful crowd of people. Finally I have an idea - this is so cool. Thank you all very much again! I wish I could meet you guys in person - it must be ... fantastic ... at least ... All the very best to all of you, Thorsten -
Maybe it is not. Your suggestion may really be key to this >fantastic< build!!! @teflon, do not give up. Please. What you have created is way too cool. Let it sit for a while, then go over it again. But do not abandon ship!!! All the best - and (as my grad students keep telling me) rock on dude. Thorsten Maybe @teflon hasn't? What are good approaches to get this going? Best Thorsten

The Future of Lego Space. (opinions, ideas, discussion)
Toastie replied to Trekkie99's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
yeah, looks like ... But: We are allowed to add/change ... mod TLC's models, right? The fiction over science thing. I took Emmet's dream house (converted to the space house) and ... made it twice the size in length and a little wider (only 2 studs ...). Added a comfortable bed, a shower, a kitchen, a bathroom, a door. Raised the walls a little. Kept the original look and feel as much as possible. Not done yet, but you know what? I'll depart comfortably to - the Moon. Or Mars. Or ... to a galaxy far, far away. And most certainly: >Way< beyond that What I am trying to say is: This set simply made me jump back to space. I still do have the grey/blue/trans yellow sets for sure. But: I love what I can do - space wise - with what is available today. All the best, Thorsten- 991 replies

The Future of Lego Space. (opinions, ideas, discussion)
Toastie replied to Trekkie99's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
Even just inserted here as a fraction of a full sentence (I love how you, @Aanchir, use and play the full width and depth of the English/American Language; everytime, it is a pleasure to read your posts/replies - they represent human culture, as far as I am concerned), this is the core of the matter. At first, I was just linearily following arguments about Space vs Starwars and whatnot. You know what simply blew me away? Emmet's Dream House converting into a space ship. That is so much space and >not< Starwars - it cannot be more distant. So yes, when you like blue and grey, and trans yellow - that is not for you - that thing is boldly blue and yellow. But: It is space, as in my space. All the best Thorsten What then IS a NEW Space line? Honestly, I am asking that myself. (I digged the LEGO space stuff back then. A couple of decades ago) Certainly not what has been done in the past, right? It has to be >new<, as you said. Or do you want to revert to Space Opera? Over and over again? I believe not. Another thought: Is all the Apollo 11 stuff - now hyped evrywhere - NEW? I don't think so. Nor do you, I believe. Going to Mars - phew - Mars ... I want to go to what they talked about in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I want to get on board of Emmet's Dream House and take off. Not to Mars - no, to new worlds. All the best Thorsten- 991 replies
