Nocturnus Minichallenge II: Paying Tribute
MassEditor replied to MassEditor's topic in Guilds of Historica
Jeez, was Garm not taught how to share? Seriously though, you are right to blame Garm. He really is Historica's fall guy. I still can't look at a mirror without getting shivers. Building block? I always blame Garmadon. Stepped on a LEGO? Garmadon's fault. Missing pieces? Guess who - Garmadon! Spilled biscuits and gravy all over your MOC? That fiend, Garmadon, who else! One other note, I now know where Garm gets his amazing ability for incredibly lengthy, though nonetheless legible, sentences. -
Nocturnus Minichallenge II: At the Shrine of Kanohau
MassEditor replied to Henjin_Quilones's topic in Guilds of Historica
Great entry, I like how the shrine is carved into the mountain itself, as if the entire mountain is a tribute to Kanohau's might. I also really enjoyed the backstory. I love me a good fire-god story to read before I go to bed! About your photography, investing in a decent camera (even just $50-80 bucks, or perhaps less if you don't mind a used one from eBay or your local pawn shop) will make a big difference. Can I assume that you are using a cellphone camera? If so, they are just too limited to do what you need, like setting the ISO or using a timer and tripod together. As far as lighting goes, try shooting outside on a cloudy day or in some heavy shade. That will cut out the shadows and prevent the colors from washing out. All you need there is a white background and an outside area away from neighbors who want to pry in on your LEGO hobby! And if beer is for horses, than call me Seabiscuit, because I love swimming in yeast (or barley, or hops or whatever beer is made from)! Edit: On second thought, swimming in yeast sounds disgusting, and potentially dangerous. For the record, I'm not advising anyone to do so.- 8 replies

My goodness, what to say! I'm not the only Nocty who enjoyed his time playing in the sand! Blufiji, this is truly a capital build, to say the least. Not sure what I could say that hasn't been said already, but nonetheless this is a brilliantly executed build. The composition, colors and detail are just outstanding. You have really outdone yourself here, mi amigo. This build is so captivating I feel as if this is not LEGO, but real life. Congrats on the well-deserved MOC Expert tag (the quickest I've seen anyone receive on yet - a testament to your talent with the bricks!)! From the moment you joined, I had a feeling you'd become one of GoH's top builders (and one of my personal favorites).

Nocturnus Minichallenge I: Foreign Aid
MassEditor replied to MassEditor's topic in Guilds of Historica
Glad to hear that, you have a great taste in guilds! Now, these challenges are only open to members of GoH. If you haven't already, make sure to officially join Nocturnus by introducing your sigfig(s) in the Nocturnus discussion thread ASAP! -
Nocturnus Minichallenge I: Foreign Aid
MassEditor replied to MassEditor's topic in Guilds of Historica
As long as your entry does not exceed 1,024 studs, you are fine. So yes, 16x64 is totally acceptable. Post as many scenes as you can cram into the size limit. You are limited to one build (no more than 1,024 studs) but you can post as many pictures as you like to illustrate whatever story you are creating. -

Thanks for the correction Garm! I had mentioned posting your entries here, but perhaps had it worded not so well. Clarified! Also, as long as it's 11:59 somewhere on the planet, you can post your entry. I believe that is tradition? -

Book II - Nocturnus: Guild sign-up and Discussion
MassEditor replied to ZCerberus's topic in Guilds of Historica
It's been too quiet in Nocturnus lately, so let's get to building! Here's a couple of minichallenges (with prizes!) to whet our appetite for the next Chapter! Minichallenge I: Foreign Aid Minichallenge II: Paying Tribute -
Ok everyone, it's time to get building in Nocturnus! And for the chance to win some sweet PRIZES!!! Just so everyone knows, these are not part of the next chapter of Guilds of Historica, but just some fun minichallenges to get new and old builders back into the Darklands! Minichallenge II: Paying Tribute Nocturnus is a deeply spiritual land, with its residents worshipping numerous gods, deities and saints of the local pantheon. Leaders on both sides of the Nocturnus Struggle have recognized the importance of worship in attaining their goals - the Black Spire much more reluctantly, for Raavage does not easily tolerate sharing fealty, even among celestial beings. As the two sides prepare for battle, various shrines and temples are visited by the troops and civilians alike to pray for victory and safety. Minichallenge requirements: You should show troops or civilians worshipping or visiting sacred sites in Nocturnus. This is a pretty open challenge and builders will have a variety of options for their entries. Statues, temples, shrines, holy sites and other venerated locations are acceptable. Size limit: 16x16 Deadline: 11:59 p.m. anywhere in the world on October 1st Prizes will be awarded to the top builder for the Black Spire and the Nocturnian Resistance. This challenge is open to all GoH members, not just Nocturnus. The side you pick to build for has no bearing on future challenges/contests so feel free to pick whichever side you like! If you're sigfig is a member of the Nocturnian Resistance but you want to play devil's advocate and build for Raavage, then do so! Judging will be based on the MOC's story, details, composition and how well it follows the requirements. You must post your entry in a separate thread and provide a link for it in this thread. Please prefix your entry thread with the title "Nocturnus Minichallenge II:" and then enter the name of your entry. Also, please note at the top of the thread if you are building for the Resistance or the Black Spire. Feel free to discuss the minichallenge in this thread And the winners are: Captain Flint in the Black Spire category! LordDan in the Nocturnian Resistance category! Congrats to these two guys and their awesome entries, and thanks to everyone who participated! Nocturnus is great, isn't it?

Just so everyone knows, these are not part of the next chapter of Guilds of Historica, but just some fun minichallenges to get new and old builders back into the Darklands! Minichallenge 1: Foreign Aid The need for experienced soldiers in the ongoing Nocturnus Civil War is prompting both sides to seek help from outside the Darklands. Whatever their motivation - be it gold, glory or sympathy for one or the other sides - fighters from across Historica are pouring into Nocturnus. However, one does not simply walk into the Darklands. Those entering Nocturnus must face the challenges of the Kelra Labyrinth or bypass this obstacle by scaling the Rakath Mountains or entering from the jagged, dangerous coastline. Minichallenge requirements: You should show foreign forces entering Nocturnus for either the Black Spire or Nocturnian Resistance. However, they must be depicted passing through the Kelra Labyrinth, traversing the Rakath Mountains or entering Nocturnus from the sea. You can show off one fighter or as many as you can fit within the size limit. Show off your best Avalonian, Mitgardian and Kaliphlin warriors as they intercede on behalf of the Nocturnus Struggle! Size limit: 32x32 with limited overhang Deadline for entries: 11:59 p.m. anywhere in the world on October 1st Prizes will be awarded to the top builder for the Black Spire and the Nocturnian Resistance. This challenge is open to all GoH members, not just Nocturnus. The side you pick to build for has no bearing on future challenges/contests so feel free to pick whichever side you like! Also, please note at the top of the thread if you are building for the Resistance or the Black Spire. Feel free to discuss the minichallenge in this thread! Here's some recent Nocturnus history for those who need it (this is from the first page of the Nocturnus Discussion thread, if you want to read more): Following the defeat of the Black Mage at Cedrica, the guild of Nocturnus was invaded by the Black Spire, a group consisting of Hand of Corruption soldiers, Varlyrian shock troopers and Drow rebels. Nocturnus is now in chaos. The Black Spire quickly conquered nearly all of Nocturnus before Lord Sslither's forces rallied from Cedrica and a band of brave Historicans from the other three guilds made a brave stand at Abyssian castle, Nocturnus's capital. During the battle at Abyssian, disgraced Avalonian General, Trian Buress was killed by Black Spire forces. The push back from the Nocturnians weaken the Black Spire's grip, but did not break it. Today, the Black Spire has conquered over half of Nocturnus and constructed a fortress, the Obsidian Spike, to serve as a command center for their forces. The Spire now controls all of the eastern and southern portions of Nocturnus while those still loyal to Sslither hold the northern and most of the western lands. And, in case you'd like an example of the Kelra Labyrinth, here's one by the Nocturnian Master himself, IScreamClone: Alright everyone, the moment you've been waiting for: the winners of this challenge! Jacob Nion is the winner in the Black Spire category! Henjin_Quilones is the winner in the Nocturnian Resistance category! Congrats to these two, and a big thanks to all who have participated! Nocturnus has never looked so awesome!

Thanks everyone, hopefully the pics are all working now! Hey buddy! Man, I know how time-consuming house renovations can go - my wife and I bought our first house this year and we are going through the same. You know the ladies, got to have everything perfect! Hopefully very soon we will see more of your amazing builds! Jacob, I knew you would call me out! I know, I know, you are right - I've been a very bad Nocty lately. But I have been building a lot for Nocturnus, I just haven't posted it here yet! I am thinking very soon however! We are going to show everyone why Nocturnus is still the very best guild!!

Book II - Mitgardia: Guild sign-up and Discussion
MassEditor replied to Ecclesiastes's topic in Guilds of Historica
Good man, thanks! Actually, that was a very impressive sentence, and I am proud of myself for understanding it. -
Woah, what a nice surprise this build is! The layout of this castle, with its stone and wooden sections, is fantastic. Lots of great details and techniques, the snotted staircase being one of my favorites. The rockwork, vegetation, woodwork and worn sections of the manor really bring this to life. I like that you included an interior. Sure, there's a few things that could be nitpicked, but they're very small things, and overall this is just wonderful. You are coming a long way with your builds, keep it up and you will be a MOC master for sure! Great job Titus, can't wait to see more!

Book II - Mitgardia: Guild sign-up and Discussion
MassEditor replied to Ecclesiastes's topic in Guilds of Historica
Hey Mitgards! Any of you know where I can find the results of the Mitgardian Civil War? IIRC, the results were posted during the Kaliphlin Civil War. I remember seeing them, but didn't get a chance to read all the way through. Having trouble finding anything but the prologue using the forum's search feature. If you'd be so kind to give me a link to the thread, I'd be grateful. -
These interviews are awesome! Mirrors a lot of why I joined and what inspires me about GoH. Kayne, it was awesome to hear from you again. You were one of the builders who inspired me to join. When are we gonna see you back in GoH, where you belong?!? And wow, this is the first I've seen of the Brick Magazine special on GoH (just checked out the digital edition). One of the writers asked me if they could use a pic or two of one of builds, but that was the last I'd heard. Despite a few typos and misinformation, this is truly an awesome feature. Definitely have to get me a physical copy, and not just because one of my builds made it on the cover!

Woah, now here's a beaut! Lovely indeed! What a wonderful color scheme. Love the techniques used here for the castle wall, great texture! The minaret is just gorgeous, the tan and white work so well together. Nice landscaping around the castle as well. And excellent job photographing this build! Looks like SK has helped create a new moccing machine! I can only imagine the standoff that occurs when you both need a 1x2 tan tile, and there's only one left in the box.

That's one tough looking group of Avalonians! No tight-wearing for these guys, eh! Honestly, this band of ruffians look like they'd be more at home in Nocturnus! Welcome to GoH! Nice to see the use of some classic minifigs. Great variation among each of the troops. That siege engine looks pretty sweet, you got another photo of it we can see? I do think the use of muskets may be pushing the technology limit too far. We have seen a crude bombard or two, but nothing in the way of small arms. Given that the time period is set in the classic medieval period, the techniques to miniaturize gunpowder weapons are not available in GoH. Just a small point, and I'd totally defer to others if I'm wrong.

The Exetrius Saga (9): Festival of the Ranks (part 1)
MassEditor replied to Exetrius's topic in Guilds of Historica
Now this kicks butt! Perhaps my favorite build by you yet, Exetrius. Besides being a well put together build with some interesting techniques, the overall presentation is fantastic. The action shots are particularly good, especially the one of Enzan deflecting the magic beams. Very well photographed, perfect depth of field. It's obvious you put a lot of thought into how everything was placed. Especially the crowd, which appear to be jumping out of their seats in excitement over the fights. I will echo Henjin, this ended far too soon!- 14 replies

A race of bear people who hunt sharks? Not a group I'd want to mess with! Interesting use of color and texture on that tower, the result is quite impressive. The half frozen water is particularly good. Such a cool looking race with their own distinct architecture, I hope we see more of these folks!

Good to see you back Alfadas, and nice battle scene! I like how it shows the two forces just moments before they crash into one another.

Whoa, what a clever and perfectly executed build! This is the kind of build that makes Nocturnus such a warm and cozy place to be. A top notch Warlord build for sure. Really digging that unique base, the lava flow and the crumbling aqueduct/lava dam.
-
Thanks everyone! Wish I remembered who came up with this design so I could give them credit! Perhaps Mike S.? I'll get you a pic showing how it's done, basically the key is using flex tubing to clip the palm leaves onto. Thanks Henjin! I agree, the 1x3 plate does not look very natural. I will try the 2x2 round plate next time! Hey BC, yeah, not sure why Flickr says that, but I'm too lazy to fix it!

The Exetrius Saga (8): Supplies arrive!
MassEditor replied to Exetrius's topic in Guilds of Historica
Now that's how you transport some goods! Sweet caravan Exterius! Although I feel bad for those overworked horses! -
Awesome scene here! The story is very fun too. I agree, quite cozy, and excellent use of those printed tiles for the bar counter. Rough looking group of bar-goers there! Still, wouldn't mind grabbing a pint or five from this hole in the wall!
