Open it, behold its glory, then destroy it with the steamroller -
*cough* Bionicle existed way before Hero Factory. And the principle of both is the same. If you really like Hero Factory that much, you should possibly give Bionicle a chance

What Price Genius?
Balrog replied to grum64's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'll try to sum this up a little, because I don't think the price is too bad. I recalculate to Euro, because it's easier for me and I roughly have the prices in my head ;) 750GBP = ~960€ Stock prices: 8043 had a retail price of ~170€ when it was available. Right now, the set sells "used and built" for around 200€ or even more. 42009 has a retail price of ~200€, but usually sells a lot cheaper. But I'll take the stock price. Madoca's SUV has no pricetag because it is a MOC. But, if it was a set, it would be probably around 180-200€ because of the PF parts. So we are already at approximately 400€ for two sets. In addition, 200€ for the SUV sums to 600€. Ant that is already nearly 2/3 of the price. If you want to build Jurgens Ultimate 42009 you probably have to invest another 150€. So you are at around 750€ for the 3 models. But I guess it will be even more if you bricklink the SUV completely. The rest, which is according to my numbers around 200€, is for the time investment, purchasing parts and building. For the most Lego fans around the forum, that is of course ridiculous and expensive. Even for me. But keep in mind, there are people out there who are not into Lego like that, but love some of the sets. With this offer they can get 3 nice models, all full RC, at a rather reasonable price. They just want to buy the models, put them on a shelf and admire them. -

I am very impressed It's really astonishing how well it works for a first physical iteration. -

Wow. Next test: full-weight boom -
But that is the point of the challenge isn't it? If the set is on the market and many more resources (pictures) are available, it is probably not as challenging to do as when there is limited information/resources. Also the builder then may be tempted to actually use these other ressources for a more precise construction. For the 1H2015 sets we now have a single picture per set and that forces the builder to guess and improvise. If you want to push this whole thought to the top, you might guess the builder wants to challenge himself how accurate in total his construction will be (which he can only evaluate once the sets are on the market), not just the general shape of the model.

Bob, you should have only allowed brick-built entries . . . Just kidding. -
Using the CV joint correctly doesn't affect the geometry of the axle. But you are right, it somewhat limits the steering lock. But if you build it as shown in the picture it will not work very well because when having a steering angle of 45° the u-joint "bends" more than 45° and thus becoming ineffective and could possibly break. U-joints only work well with angles of 45° (or was it 55° like in angled beams=?) or less.

I know, I know. But, those yellow ones with huge wheels and the tilted yellow bed, though different, they are all somewhat similar.

Finally. Invested some time and made some adjustments to my entry. Also made some new pictures. I am not happy with the quality of the pictures, but 1. photographing something black is hard and 2. I still need to find a proper lighting solution. Oh well, I hope you like it. The other entries are really fantastic. -
If you get the steering axle with the currently loose u-joint one stud closer to the ball-joint, the movement won't be too big. Also, connecting the axle that goes into the u-joint with the CV joint to the chassis, it can compensate for most movement in all directions. For this, again take the Unimog as inspiration. It had it exactly like that.

Question to the participants who brick-built their entry: Is it just me or are those balljoints in the legs rather weak once you have some weight in the upper structure? I am currently struggling to get some "agressive" poses right, which didn't seem a problem with the more lightweight original Exo Suit.
