    Modding the Barracuda thread

Mencot: Oof! I was about to post this here when I got back from work. But I see you beat me to it ? I watched the whole video at this morning and must say, I envy that he had the courage to spend 400 euros/dollars that he certanly isnt getting back from that video.... I didnt dare to buy two, mostly as I wanted that many as possible could get at least one of these. Great mod and will certanly be ”borrowing” that crane idea. Captain Becker

THE PIRATE BAY IS GOING TO BE AN OFFICIAL LEGO SET!!!!

Alright, so! I havent commented on this subject as I wanted to get the set first and build it before letting my thoughts known on the matter. Its half way done so far, but I can already say whit confidence that I DO LOVE the set! Not only it has this nostalgic feel to it, but this set has so much more in it that I cant bring to words. I didn vote for this set mainly becuse it was this big, chaotic brown blob and a mess. Not appealing at all to my eyes. An yes, im aware many of those who voted this wanted to see something like that, but for me it didnt strike as intresting at all. I have tried to gather some thoughts of it, and im going to list some here so I can get them out of my head. POSITiVES: General Appeal: This set is everything a pirate fan wants, pirates, island whit a shipwreck, hidden treasure and a buildable pirate ship. the basic structures are all there from the original, except in form of a ship parts. Accessability and affordability: Whit around 2500 pieces and the set costing only 200 euros/dollars, this set is well priced so that many can afford to buy one and enjoy it. Throwback: Its a direct throwback to the 1989 and the golden age of Lego Pirates 1990`s, everything from the box, and the minifigrues to the ship it self, it brings me so many good memories when I got my 2009 Lego Pirates wave of sets. I didnt get to enjoy the golden 90`s as I was still a youngster and didn't know that Lego did exist. I've gotten 3 Classic Pirates ships later, and some sets from that time later as an adult. Play value for younger audience: As much as we AFOLs would've liked to see the original IDEAs set, it wouldn't have been nearly as appealing to the young master builders. This set contains so much endless fun and adventure I myself feel like i want to start play whit it! Where as the original wouldn't have been nearly as exiting IMHO. Colors: Where the Original was to my eyes just a big, boring brown blob whit absolute chaos, this version added a ton of colors and life to the bay! There are animals, different corals, shells and flowers, and the set itelf screams to be played whit! I couldn't be happier. Imrpoved building techniques and lots of new parts/better prints for the minifigs: Where the old Barracuda had some sharp angles and edges, the new one is designed to be sleek, I mean just look at those curves! Also improvements in materials, prints (Which look suberb) and parts! Some parts get replaced overtime, and some fall out of production. But that only makes room for new and more exiting parts! For example: I couldnt have dreamed back in 2009 of candle, lantern, all the new flames and foliage parts we have as of today. Its a 2 in 1: And finally, we come to the conclusion, the set offers so much value for our money already IMO, but they decided to take it one step forward yet and made this a 2 in 1 meaning you could actually build the improved Black Sea Barracuda and sail away from the bay area!!! The ship itself is one of the best ships I think LEGO has ever made! Some slight modding and Improvements are needed to it, of course. But that doesnt matter. Again, this only adds to the value. Which then leaves us whit a bay area that you can still build your own pirates base!!!! I mean they did so many things in this small set, and the price is so low as 200??? My mind is blown! Round of grog to all LEGO designers and to the original IDEAs maker for this! Phew! Sorry about the long text and spelling errors, I was so exited when writing this. So to sum it all up: Immense value for your money, and a joyable set even if just for display purposes, this has it all! Even more than I ever could dream or hope for. And for those still mourning the loss of the original IDEAs set: Go and build your own, have fun! Take inspiration of what couldve been, and use your imagination! Rejoice whit us, for the Pirates arrrr back whit a BANG! They already gave us a great beginning whit the island, now you just got to finish it! GO Moc YOUR HEARTS OUT LADS! Captain Becker

    Modding the Barracuda thread

That`s some seriously beefed up Barracuda, and an awesome at that! I like the idea of the forecastle to atleast seem "usable", although you really couldnt use that cannon there realisticly.speaking. Regarding to your question, you could always try it I suppose, but I dont see the need for it honestly, but give it a shot and see if you like it, this looks intimitating regardless!
  4. The Pirates of Barracuda Bay set finally arrived just today! Ive been building it all afternoon, Also cleaning my old ships form dust and seeing what projects to take on next

    110 gun sized ship masts

Well, personally I think 4x4 round is just a bit too large for a mast, and 2x2 is simply just too thin. Here we run into the problem of not havin 3x3 round bricks. However, I have seen some people usin tile pillars as masts for the larger ships, and it uses SNOT techniques. Heres a link to a Lego Desinger video, hope this helps giving you some ideas of how you could do it. EDIT: Here is second part, and the technique I recommend to try https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8PMS8gW9d4 Captain Becker

    Working Rudder Design

Simply by using a lightsaber blade, 4L bar: https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=30374#T=S&O={"iconly":0} Its pushed inside the steering wheel, and it has that black gear which then starts to rotate all the others. I have not tried this myself though, as I am afraid of harming my beloved Lego pieces. It could be that the bar has been modified somehow to attach it better, or glued onto the steering wheel. But what I can tell, it just simply pushed in between the pin slot in the steering wheel. I must dig this further. EDIT: Also it might be that he i using a different kindof steering wheel as thee are two kinds of them. One whit a solid pin, and one whit the slotted pin like this: https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=4790b#T=S&C=88&O={"color":88,"iconly":0} I think it miust be the slotted pin one that he is using as I cant see how a 4L lightsaberr bar would fir into a solid pin one. EDIT2: Just tested it whit both of the steering wheels. You need the slotted one to make this type of gear steering mechanism to work. Cant fidnd any othe methods to make a geared steering atm.

    Working Rudder Design

Well, gear working rudder mechanism has been done before in some MOCs before, but its much simpler if you just went the traditional and realistic way to just attaching a piece of string and do it that way instead. I can tr and look out for the gear mechanism methods a bit and see if I can find them again for you Captain Becker EDIT: Here we go, a quick google job usually helps

    Queen Catherine's Revenge

For such a small vessel, Id say you did a great job capturing the look and the feel. One thing just bugs me a bit as a Lego purist, I can see some non-Lego parts used on the minifigs there. But shes a great vessel anyway! Fair winds and calm seas! Yours truly: Captain Charles J. Becker
