New (Old) LEGO Pirates adventures--in German!

So... this happened... I'm pretty excited to have been able to finally obtain all of the German radio play (hörspiel) cassettes! The original six from 1990, and then the two additional ones released in 1995.

10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About LEGO Pirates

Oh... you're absolutely right @TalonCard! I'd completely forgotten about that in the the Secret Life book (even though it's only been a few months since I read the book). You make some excellent points and observations! Yes please!! I have photos of the issues, but hi-res scans would be much preferred!

10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About LEGO Pirates

I really wish that since the magazine is now out of print (and has been for a while) that they would make the magazine issues readily available. Either as freebies, or even for a modest fee. Yeah, it's definitely an assumption to make. But it's the most reliable information we have on it since it came straight from a LEGO designer.
  4. Well, I can't speak to that authoritatively since I don't own it (I do own the original RBR, just not the re-issue). I have seen the re-issue sails for the Armada Flagship in person though and they seemed to me at that time to be the same as the originals. And like I mentioned, I do have both versions of the Black Seas Barracuda and the material for the sails on those is very similar or identical. (As for image size, @Mister Phes would be the final answer, but I don't think anybody has paid attention to or followed those sizing guidelines for a long time now.)

    Future LEGO Pirates Set Speculation

I actually really wanted to like the Nightmare Shark Ship. I love wacky builds and totally off the wall fantasy stuff. I was quite a fan of the Vidiyo Punk Pirate stuff for example. But... overall the ship just isn't really grabbing my attention all that much. Maybe that will change after I've seen some more in-depth reviews and photos of it, but at this time I think it's likely going to end up as a pass for me unfortunately.
  6. Just an FYI - the sails on the re-issue ships of the early 00s (so we're talking sets 6290, 6291, and 6292 from 2001 and 10040 from 2002) are of a material that is very, very similar, if not even identical, to the original sets of the 90s. I personally own both 6285 and 10040 and can state that those sails are pretty much identical in the material. The other sails from the 2001 remakes also have all seemed to be likewise the same that I've seen. Unlike the much more "papery" type sails of the later 00s and into the present. However even from that period, there is certainly a bit of noticable differences between sails of different sets, so I think it safe to say that LEGO has experimented with various materials over the years. It is really good to hear through that your cleaning experience was successful!

10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About LEGO Pirates

The caption for that Europa theme image that Mark Stafford published in Brick Journal magazine states the following: Theme Name: Europa 1700 Archives file date: 1994 Description: Europe in the 18th Century, featuring cannon-forts, towns, bridges and transportation. Possibility of including Witches, Bridge Trolls and also is is the time of Dracula. Alternatively the theme could include historically correct soldiers of the Scotch, Russian, Dutch armies etc. with ships, hot-air balloons and the like. This is also the colonial era... Cancellation reason: Unknown, presumed to be too close to the castle and pirates themes at the time. So it appears from that caption that this concept was developed a few years into the Pirates theme, but used those figs from the theme because of their availability at the time.

You might already be covering this with your point 4, but an antidote about how Kjeld (or was it Godtfred?) almost nixed the whole idea of a skull and crossbones at all due to it being too scary for kids.
  9. While I've cleaned a lot of older sails using Oxiclean, I've never attempted it with any of the newer more paper-y kinds. I don't have any idea how they would react. Certainly best of wishes in your cleaning endeavor - I look forward to hearing how it goes with the Imperial Flagship sails!
  10. I'm so happy that the Captain has arrived safe and sound at my home port!! I can't wait to get him built and on display along side the rest of my Pirates collection. A huge thanks to @Piraten for the assistance. I was also able to trade for a Danish version of The Golden Medallion comic which is quite special!

    [MOC] 6277 Merchant cutter reimagined

You did such an awesome job with this @Samarth!! You really captured the feel of the original with all of the right modern upgrades to parts and building technique. I'd 100% buy this as a set.

Hahahaha, this is awesome! I absolutely love everything about this whole concoction!!

[MOC] The strangest boat you ever did see

Fun ship concept and well executed!
  14. My BAM tower had both of these dual moulded legs in stock, and while the red & black ones may have been the "intended" legs for this figure, I actually quite prefer the dark tan & brown ones.
  15. I did not. I've found that I'm mostly better informed than the LEGO store staff when it comes to stuff like that...
  16. I was able to pick up a few of the Pirate skeleton figure at my closest LEGO store yesterday! It's a really fun torso.

[WIP] Jack Stone Hulled ship WIP experiment. NOW COMPLETE!

That's a great looking ship! One would hardly even know what the basis of the hulls are if you weren't already aware or looking very, very closely.

    [MOC] Pirates Great Airship

I love the idea of taking just a couple of fairly easily obtainable sets and making a pretty unique MOC just from those parts. Well done!
  20. I saw an early review for the set that indicated that the sail was indeed cloth, not vinyl as I had assumed it would be.

    [MOC] Croco Island

Fun concept! Nice to have a different rock build than a skull.

[MOC] The Black Pearl - 20th Anniversary - FINISHED 2-page

I would vote for patched sails.
