Torald attacks the "Mountain" with the trident, back row (or front row, what ever is more useful)

Ezeran closes his eyes for just a split second to regain focus of the situation. He then pats Torald on the back and grits his teeth as a low growling laughter could be heard from the symbiont preparing itself for mayhem. "Well friends, this is it, let's make our stand!" Ezeran uses a grand tonic as his free item. He then conjures up a spell with his Ooze wand and a glittering ruby as he aims a fire spell from the back row on Lady Luck (twice).

Yeah, no. Dyric's using his first action to heal himself, or else he's not walking much further against these guys. I'm also still not sure of the effectiveness at attacking the Founder's at his range, especially when he could be sneaking back and freeing the prisoners.

@WaterbrickDown: is the only entrance inside through the lower inner wall gate? Or is there any chance in blowing a hole through the roof or anything?

QM Note: Correct, you can get to the upper inner wall from where you're at. You can certainly then try and get to the lower inner wall from there.

OoC: Changed.

Also, @Waterbrick Down - Is Throlar getting through to both groups of soldiers? Or just the ones on the Wall?

And what's the timeline on that hanging? If we take down the Founders, will they quit? If not, how many rounds left before it starts?

"I've run the numbers, and this will come pretty close to working.

If the casters flee, there simply aren't enough people down here on the ground. Throlar is about to turn those sailors on to our side, fleeing up there would be a waste of time.

And beyond that," the Black Knight raised his voice to a hearty yell, "WE'RE TIRED OF RUNNING!

This is our city, our Fort - we're making a stand against the people who took it!"

OoC: Worst case scenario: we all get KO'd. Single Phoenix Incense(Pretzel alone has six) and we're all back on our feet again. We're already sending away the people that can die permanently.

And beyond that...I really am tired of running. :def_shrug:

Statistically, all of the lower-leveled heroes are going to go down at least once, unless they're not in the area, etc. If the rest of my crew really wants to flee, I'll lead them away, but as for myself, I'd rather go down, having gambled at a survival long-shot and failed, then just wait to die in a generic, miss-roll.

My crew stands and fights for our city, and our people.

You can argue that we'd survive more on the wall...but this battle fell to us.

I don't want to run.

I want to stand and fight.

(Yes, I am prioritizing RP over maximizing safety/roll numbers. It's the finale. We're never going to get a moment like this again.)

QM Note: Dyric can see that the prisoners are standing near the gallows but have not yet been hung.

Wait, I've been interpreting the red inner area as a roofed building inside the fort, that we can't yet see inside of. Is that mistaken? Is it more of a stage or something? If Dyric can see the prisoners from this angle, can he go down and reach them?

OoC: Thanks.

Are we able to use our Free Item abilities? Could this count as the start of a new battle? (I know "in-story" it's a new battle, but mechanically, I thought this was just another round. If it could count as a new battle, that would be really helpful.)

@Palathadric I have you down as attacking The Walking Mountain, but if you want to attack someone else I can change things around. (Just don't attack The Golden Dragon - her Special would be devastating(an additional set of Free Hits!). I'm only listing Lucky Heroes as targeting her, for that reason.)

If Petaldan wants to Smoke Bomb out of there...well, he can, but you have the highest Defense out of any of us. It would really help to have you around for the battle.

(Later.)

Throlar sighed at what was happening around him, he had this sinking feeling that those few of his allies trying to talk the Founders down wouldn't succeed without anyone else trying to back them up. And that clearly wasn't going to happen with the rest of them either being deliberately antagonistic or simply not addressing them at all.

However, he had other things to attend to first.

Addressing himself to the enemy sailors on the wall he said, with all the diplomatic training he could muster;

"Look, I know you're worried, you fought hard to take what you have now from your former masters and you're afraid that if you give up now things will just go back to the way they were, that the freedom you fought so hard to attain and that you named this fortress after will be forgotten about. Well I won't let that happen. I won't let things go back to the way they were because the way things were sucked. What with the Houses abusing their power, filling their ranks with corrupt bastards, fighting against each other without regatta to whoever got in the way, even going so far as to build a bloody wall around the Hovels to keep the poor oppressed and helpless. I know you in particular had special grievances against the Bonapartes, the unreasonably high tariffs they levied on any ships that sailed into Eubric, the way they mistreated the sailors, dockhands, and fishermen that worked here in the city, and how their corrupt harbormasters would use their 'authority' to impound the cargo of any ship that couldn't fight back, essentially robbing them blind! But look, that ship out there? The one used to get here? Well the captain and crew of that ship, people who owed no allegiance to the Bonapartes and who would've been as persecuted under them as you? They are currently rotting in the prison of this fort with your oppressors! Does that make any sense? I know that these Founders that you've put your faith in say they have your best interests at heart, but do you really believe you should follow leaders who lash out blindly at anyone who disagrees with them, even against the people who you did all this to protect? I think not. And if you surrender now I promise that I will do all in my power to make certain that your grievances are not swept aside. And if those who were formally in power try to do so anyway, then I will fight them to ensure they don't succeed! And I'll do this because I believe that what you've fought for here is fundamentally just, even if you have been lead astray by these Founders' honied words." His words were spoken with such conviction that you could tell he wasn't just saying them to make the sailors back down, he meant what he said.

(Not finished yet, but I have to quote something on a different page and that means making a second post.)

On 9/13/2018 at 9:56 PM, Lord Duvors said:

Throlar nodded with approval at what Arthur had said and, feeling he had properly addressed the men on the wall, decided it was time to turn his attention (and his diplomatic skill) to the Founders as well. Rising to his full (unimpressive) height he revolved on his vertical axis to face them so fast that he seemed to be standing on a turntable and began to speak;

"I'm not going to deny what you've said about this," he gestured toward the bodies on the beach, "Look at it, it's a bloody charnel house down there, I don't think that's truly justifiable under any circumstances. Nor will I deny that we're here by our own choice, that's the simple truth. And I'm not going to deny that Heroica has failed this city, we allowed ourselves to grow complacent, swayed by the empty promises offered by the houses, or we fell to hopelessness, thinking we had no chance of enacting change save through influencing their decisions or taking advantage of what few chances our quests provided, I know I did. But I am going talk to you about... well, I apologize for the arrogance of this but I'm going to talk about myself.

"When I first joined Heroica I was at a point in my life where I had suffered many failures. I'm an ambassador you see, well, was anyway, I don't think I'm going to be one for much longer after this debacle, and due to my rather abrasive personally I had very little success in my chosen line of work. Often I was forced to return home in disgrace, tail between my legs as it were. And due to this I was... not in the best state of mind. My disappointment in myself, vanity, and my wounded pride all combined to make me feel resentful towards the world for what was entirely my own fault.

"And so, on my very first quest as a member of Heroica no less, I killed a man, an elf called Lord Baelanith, in an angry brawl that I started myself for no good reason.

"As you can imagine this... this was... it bro... shattered me when I learned the man was dead, even more so because between doing the deed and learning of it's outcome I had also been forced to kill two men, who were drunk at the time and didn't even know what they were doing, in self defense. And then I had to experience seeing people, allies who weren't members of Heroica and who had for some reason decided to let me lead them into battle, die in battle while I was unable to save them. As you can probably guess I felt horrible after all this," he was clearly feeling horrible now as he recounted it, "The person who informed me of the lord's death was his liege, Lady Calaryl, and she gave me a task to perform for her in atonement. One of the houses in Eubric, the Shadeaux to be specific, had made themselves the allies of the Lady and her Elven subjects and through Heroica I was to gain favor with them. Upon doing so I was to deliver a package to the Lady and thus be absolved of my crimes. I myself didn't feel that that alone would be enough to achieve redemption but I accepted, hoping that through Heroica I would be able to do enough good to salve my conscience. Funnily enough I never actually had the opportunity to complete Lady Calaryl's request.

He was silent for a moment before he began to speak again.

(I don't have time to complete this tonight, so I'll be editing this post tomorrow to add the rest. Please try not to create ten new pages full of text walls while I'm gone okay? Bye.)

QM Note: Which of the two groups will Throlar address on his turn?

OOC: If a character is going to go down, I'd rather it not be an NPC who could end up permanently killed by the attack; Heroes at least are guaranteed to be revivable by Phoenix Essence and Necromancer so long as the battle continues, whereas NPCs aren't nearly as disposable.

I'm aware that the outer wall party can't save the Harbor group this Round, but this at least gets more of us down there without getting pinned down by all the enemies up here.

Arthur snorts at the false Golden Dragon's posturing.  "Yes, because murdering everyone who disagrees with you and then on top of that anyone who even thinks about them in a sympathetic light is totally for the betterment of the city, and definitely not the mark of a corrupt tyranny even worse than what we had in the first place."  The Skirmisher's sarcasm is unmistakable, but the tone quickly changes to diplomatic sincerity.  "Look.  I know for absolute certain you're not the real Golden Dragon, because I spoke to her spirit not long ago, and you're nothing like her.  She would never approve of your attempt to destroy all Heroes, because -- and this is her own words, mind you -- 'Heroica was neither my nor my companions greatest achievement. No, it was the lives of those who sat under its roof. Those who came to us with neither family or friends and left with both. Those who lacked skill and left with confidence and competence. Those who only cared for themselves and left full of selflessness and compassion for those around them. We took farmhands and showed them the good they could do in this world a nd the pride in that. We took princes and showed them the humility that gains the respect of all men. Heroica was never a building that could be closed, it was a commitment to a community that would not stand back and idly watch the world destroy itself. It was a commitment to sacrificing oneself for the betterment of one's neighbor. It placed no absolute faith in either itself or any oth er institution, it put its faith in people.'  And that is the Heroica -- no, that is the Eubric you're trying to destroy.  I won't deny that this city and her Heroes have their issues, but damn it we've been trying solve them, we've been trying from the day this organization was founded and continued long after the true Founders were dead and buried.  The nature of life is to try, to fail, and to get back up and try again until you get it right.  And you have no right to stand there and try to wipe it all away just because you think you have all the answers.  Take it from me; I used to think I had all the answers once, too, but all I really was was a colossal prick.  I learned from my mistakes, let them make me into a better person.  Even now, I don't have all the answers.  I don't know what the best possible Eubric looks like.  But one thing I do know?  It's not ****ing this.  So yeah, I am 'resisting' your efforts.  Because they're hurting Eubric, and they'll hurt the rest of the world.  I won't stand back and let the world destroy itself, and I will not stand back and let you destroy it either.  Because like the real Golden Dragon said, that's not what Heroes do.  If you're going to wear her countenance, then you owe it to her to uphold her ideals and recognize that what you're doing is wrong, that it goes against everything that Heroica stands for, and that it's time for you to stop."

Dyric Rone freezes at the sound of the Miracle Worker's voice. It was a sound he had never heard before, and yet he could immediately identify the quiet gravitas.

Mycroft Rolander, the MiracleworkerThe younger Duplovian projects his voice as loud and far as he can. To finally see you in the flesh... I wish it were under better circumstances.  My name is Dyric Rone, once a prefect of Duplovia, now a hero of Heroica. Years ago I came here, following the tales of your legend. I believed the Miracleworker helped found the Hall for a reason, and I have fought to preserve that vision to the best of my ability in these changing times. If you truly desire an end to this needless bloodshed, then I would have word with you, if you would allow it. No one else needs to die today, but that depends entirely on you.

Noticing the Dragoon getting more frustrated and remembering the last time he faced off against a Dragoon. I want to tell you a little story, don't worry it is short. The first mission I had with this organization, my group was supposed to "drag" home two Dragoons. But obviously it didn't went that way at all. Their was an assassin with us and she just wanted to kill the Dragoons. At this point Germ voice obviously went cold and intimidating. The little assassin succeeded in killing one of Dragoons. And that Dragon went crazy with grief, the group had to put the creature down. You are probably ask some questions let me answer some now, what was I doing during this fiasco? I left feeling I have failed the Dragon. Heck, I feel like doing that now, nothing I can do will stop any of this. Second what does any of this have to do with me (i.e. you). As Germ's tone shifted back and forth it went back to intimidating. Do you want your Dragon to go crazy or even yourself? If we kill one of you, we will have to kill the other. And from the sounds of your "friends" their, it is starting sound like they don't want to go that route, or any of these routes you got planned out. So what do you want to do now?

He stares at the Miracle Worker in a brief stupor even as the heroes from the wall rush toward the Founders. The Doomsayer wouldn't be swayed an inch. He assumed the same went for the other Founders...in the middle of all this, was there actually a chance for a peaceful resolution?

Most of us are up on the wall, the rest are mostly in the harbor with the Founders who just showed up. A few of us are jumping down but the remainder need to clear out the wall, plus a few can still target the Founders at range.

For this next bit, I'm going to assume that everyone rolls successfully(almost impossible), and see what happens when all of those Free Hits start landing. Also, everyone is supposed to be Back Row:

Lady Luck - 5/9 Free Hits

  • Her bio lists "Ignores Row," so every single Free Hit from her will hit with full strength.

The Miracle Worker - 6/8

Battle Order:
>Lind
>Torald
>Petaldan
>Elphaba
>Heckz
>Ezeran

First Round of Free Hits:

>Lind
40 Damage, -15(Defense), Final Health 27
>Torald
40 Damage, -16(Defense), Final Health 28
>Petaldan
40 Damage, -33(Defense), Final Health 36
>Elphaba
40 Damage, -15(Defense), Final Health 36
>Heckz
40 Damage, -3(Defense), Final Health 2
>Ezeran
15 Damage, -6(Defense), Final Health 29

Second Round of Free Hits(Assuming halved damage):

>Lind

15 Damage, No Defense, Final Health 12
>Torald
15 Damage, No Defense, Final Health 13
>Petaldan
15 Damage, No Defense, Final Health 21
>Elphaba
15 Damage, No Defense, Final Health 21
>Heckz
15 Damage, No Defense, KO'd!
>Ezeran
No Free Hits, Final Health 29

Hmm. Well, it's better than I was afraid of, but that's still calling it awfully close - and keep in mind, that's assuming no one rolls Damage.

(The sailors. Also, can I take a normal action and use diplomacy on the same turn or are they mutually exclusive?)

(Edit: Finally finished Throlar's speech to the Founders, and wow, I think it might be the longest thing I've written in this game to date. Shows what a windbag I am.)

(Edit again: And I realize I left out a single line. A single line.)

QM Note: Using diplomacy will take an action.

Most of us are up on the wall, the rest are mostly in the harbor with the Founders who just showed up. A few of us are jumping down but the remainder need to clear out the wall, plus a few can still target the Founders at range.

I did the math on this - no one in my plan, on the Wall, should have taken damage from Free Hits, their defense was too high*, and there weren't enough enemies to go down the list to the weaker heroes. The Wall is negligible, and one good roll from Benji - who my plan left on the wall - could easily clear it out again.

*I hadn't run the numbers for taking damage from the Ground, but still.

Petaldan speaks diplomatically to the Founders, directing his focus on the Miracle Worker.

"Oh, sir, please, sir. I think we do need mercy. I mean...we need justice too, really, but I think we really have tried to make Eubric a better place and protect the people. Perhaps, sometimes the houses have used our good intentions for their own shenanigans, but even they, can be really nice people. Perhaps they are just deceived by their wealth, riches, and traditions. Most of the people from the houses that I have met have been really very nice people, people who you, or I at least, wouldn't be able to hurt outright if we really knew them. But that is beside the point. I think though that even if we disagree on some issues, we all really do want to see Eubric at peace and happy again (though I can't say I know if it ever was). The fact is that even the veterans of Heroica, who you seek to depose of, are, at this moment, putting their lives on the line to protect Eubric from the threat of a demonic invasion. They themselves realize that they have not been guiding Heroica as well as they should have, and they truly are sorry to, I think. But again, just because we've not done all that we should have, that doesn't mean that we haven't been trying to make the city a better place.

"The people who are going to be hung today, know the good that we've done and realized that we are sincere in our actions. That is why they chose to stand with us, even at the cost of their lives, because they trust and believe in us. They trust and believe in us, is because they have seen us work. Sir, I would so hate for them, having sacrificed for me, to die because I neglected to fight for them when they needed my help. To be honest with you, sir, I think that if you are trying to make Eubric a better place, those very people who were willing to resist you for what they knew to be right are the people you should think of working with, not those who just side with you because they see that you are the most popular and powerful force in Eubric at present. That latter kind of person is the kind that will be swayed and run to any tyrant who comes along, whereas those who stick by what they believe, through thick and thin, are the ones who will build a better Eubric, a less selfish one...I think."

Kiray, we need to make a decision. The fight in the harbour is going to be bloody, but we act fast we might be able to spring those prisoners. Actually... screw it, we need Torc.

"Dyric, there's no time, we need to mount the dragon." Kiray gets on. "Spirits if Diana was here," she mutters.

Germ's shouts from the deck of the Magpie give the Golden Dragon pause as she glances up at her companion before returning an icy glare at the demon. The Vermilion Wyvern launches itself into the sky as Dyric and Kiray quickly leap from the tower onto the beasts back as the creatures makes a dive for the beach. Lind and company square their shoulders against the senior fighters. Lind darts in with his blade but is bull-rushed by the mountain of a man and knocked completely off his feet his body crushed as it slams into the outer wall. Torald unleashes a desperate twister of sword and sorcery as Petaldan tries in vain to calm the rapidly deteriorating situation. Elphaba darts in with her stave and while unable to bypass the dragoon's defenses, manages to befuddle the fighter momentarily. Heckz prepares a last minute spell that rains motes of darkness upon the senior heroes, but the Golden Dragon quickly rallies her allies for a charge of the heroes ranks. Ezeran downs a tonic before trying to outsmart Lady Luck, but the mistress of misdirection spots his con and remains unimpressed. As the heroes' allies head for the safety of the outer wall. Arthur's words seem to hit a chord within the Miracle Worker.

"Enough!" With a slam of his staff a white radiance washes across the field, the fallen sailors and even Lind sit up, their lives restored. The old man braces against his staff as he nearly collapses. "Let it end Yuliana."

"Mycroft..."

42748028751_4a3f08bf58_t.jpg
"MONSTERS!" Euflear launches herself across the beach at the Golden Dragon. The two collapse in a tussle."What devilry is this? "

"Euflear?"

27584467349_794287704d_t.jpg
"Get off of me! Have you been possessed?"

Luxidious roars as the Founders drag the Fey One off of the Golden Dragon.

42748028751_4a3f08bf58_t.jpg
"You shall all die. How dare you make a mockery of my companions."

37882213505_38378f6f79_t.jpg
"Be still Euflear, we thought you were dead."

42748028751_4a3f08bf58_t.jpg
"Dead? It is you who should be dead, I watched each and every one of you pass from this life and now you would stand before and dishonor their memory?"

40810114082_d3ede4f1be_t.jpg
"Euflear honey, we're not sure how we got here, but clearly there is more to this than any of us expected."

29671679647_a110293477_t.jpg
"Heroes..." The Miracle Worker's shaking voice echos across the sand. "Please, I... I beseech you. Lower your weapons, there... there has been enough death today."

The ex-Bonaparte sailors watch the heroes, ready to follow suit.

Before getting a chance to move, or even convincing one of to come after him, the battle was over. Some how it seemed a little anti-climatic to him. At this point Germ started to look over the mess that the battle left behind, thinking the only thing useful was the bombs, wondering if he spotted some with the power of water. At this point he started to tap his finger on the railing...

So now what, someone is surrendering or something? We actually go after Rosier? Or is their now some other dumb side quest we have to do?

Rone descends from the dragon, drinking a MeadSmelling Salt and two Grand Potions. The scene was a mess of blood. He had barely collected himself before the sight of the five Founders nearly blew him off his feet again. In his mind, he knew most of them weren't real, and yet the scene looked as if straight out of the history books. Catching his breath, he made the final few steps, locking eyes with the Miracleworker. Dyric has met all sort of figures in his travels as a Hero, yet none had caught him off-guard quite like the old Veteran. He cleared his head, deciding to make introductions again. It was important that everyone get this right.

Dyric Rone, he said, extending a handThe most recent Duplovian Hero of Heroica.

The Miracleworker is right, no one else needs to die today. That starts with the innocents you have readied for execution. If you truly believe you are trying to save Eubric, you'll do it by letting them off the block. That's first priority. Once that's done, we can enter into civil discussion.
