  3. [pid][/pid] 158B Venetian War Galley by Mark of Falworth, on Flickr Fast, powerful, maneuverable, and versatile, War Galleys dominated naval warfare in the Mediterranean from the 8th century BC until the development of advanced sailing warships in the 17th century. This particular galley is commanded by the daring captain, Marco di Venezia. He relentlessly seeks out the enemies of the republic! Viva Venezia! This was made for the Brickarms Forum Contest that ends on the 30th. I know this isn't quite pirates or redcoats but I think it fits better here then the LOTR... Historic Forum. 5. The War of the Brothers (Call to Arms AND a LDD Contest See next topic) This is the story thread, the call to arms and challenge is in thread two. Backstory: In the New City district of Eastgate, Dugal’s entourage and one of DaMaximus’s generals Herondle meet to discuss how to bring the Siege of Eastgate to an end. Herondle had just come back from a mission to Ximus, so he was unfamiliar with history that led his master’s army to this point. Dugal explained it to him in brief: eastgate by skaforhire, on Flickr The Free City of Eastgate had been ruled by its first Lord Dugal MacLean for five years before it swore allegiance to Kaliphlin in 101 AH. Dugal had gone on a few adventures, leaving Petera, the Second Lord of Eastgate and Dugals first brother in charge of the city. Unbeknownst to most of the population of Historica, Petera , a powerful mage, had been apprenticed to Victor Revolword a few years before becoming the Second Lord of Eastgate. When the Revolword war broke out, Dugal, Petera, and Paulos (the third brother) fought in the resistance against the destroyer of Historica and his elemental forces. Dugal was preparing to lead one of Historica’s main defenses against Revolword’s men at Queens Cross, but was assassinated on a scouting mission. At the Battle of Queenscross, Paulos took charge and won a narrow victory. Meanwhile, back in Eastgate, Petera , now First Lord, had erected a magical dome to protect the city from elementals. However, rumors soon surfaced that Petera had been behind the death of his brother. Assassins also struck at Paulos, but he was able to avoid death. A secret message from Dugal arrived to the High Council of Kaliphlin, asking for their support beyond the grave. Lord DaMaximus was to siege Eastgate and put it back in the hands of the merchant council, while defeating Petera. Others, such as Masa and Ageven were to save Merith, Dugal’s Fiance, by secretly removing her from Eastgate. After Merith’s escape, Petera became openly hostile to Paulos, while still keeping the city open to trading with most of Historica. DaMaximus laid siege to Eastgate, taking the New City area (the portion of the city outside of the walls) and sieging the heavily fortified Old City. Still, Petera was able to supply the city through magical portals, despite Paulos’s agents trying to stop this resupply. At the same time, Masa led the effort to bring Dugal back from the dead. They succeeded, and after another attempt on Dugal’s life, they were now here, in the New City district planning a final assault on Petera and Old Eastgate. It would have to come down to an assault because all attempts to starve the enemy out had been thwarted by Petera’s ability to create magical gates to resupply points. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Dugal and Paulos Dugal looked to Paulos, and said “What about a diversion?” DSC_0928 by skaforhire, on Flickr All three men in the room knew that the last three attempts on the Old City walls were met with failure. Petera appeared on the parapets himself to fend off the attackers. He hurled lightning from his fists and turned the ground outside the city to molten lava in places. Many men had already died in the siege attempts, and now it was time to do something more clever. “What did you have in mind? “ Paulos asked. DSC_0938 by skaforhire, on Flickr “We split the forces up and try to siege the Inner Bastion (the portion of the old city across the Red River) and the main city from three different points. Then, we lead two strike forces into the heard of the Old City, one will take out the Mage Cabal that controls the Eastgate College of Magic and Navigation. The other will take out GEAR headquarters, and hopefully Petera. “ Dugal drew his plan up on the map. Herondle looked at the map before him, “that might just work.” He said. <iframe src="https://www.flickr.c...stream/player/" width="640" height="640" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe> “Well, unless we have a better plan I think this is our next…” Dugal was cut off by a messenger running into the room. “My Lords, grave news! Petera has reinforcements marching South from Avalonia on the Oil Road.” The man said, nearly out of breath. “We will have to put this plan on hold,” Dugal said. “We must meet these new troops in battle away from the city, as far as possible. I do not want to be sandwiched between Petera on a perch throwing down the elements and whatever this new army has.” “Agreed” Herondle said. “I will hold the bare minimum of a siege force here, and you lead your forces north to fight this battle.” “We will need to call for more allies around Historica.” -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Petera Meanwhile… inside the Old City Walls of Eastgate DSC_0929 by skaforhire, on Flickr Petera looked to Elden Logan, the current Second Lord of Eastgate. The Logan family had been quick to ally with him once he revealed his plan. Elden’s family was guaranteed positions on the Merchant’s Council once Eastgate had been secured and his rule was recognized by the other Lords of Kaliphlin. “If Dugal is really back from the dead, do you not worry that the people of Eastgate that have chosen you will see him as the First Lord still?” Elden muttered. “I mean, you still have not proved that you can call the Golden Axe of Eastgate.” That had been the one thing that he could not do, it belonged to the rightful ruler of the city, and its enchantment had prevented him from calling it. Even when Dugal was dead, the axe never appeared to Petera. DSC_0934 by skaforhire, on Flickr “ I can call it just fine.” Petera said. “I have to wait until the right time, in front of my people.” He turned to the matter at hand. “I must use the rift circle to invite our Avalonian guests here. He turned and began to incant. Soon, the glyph on the floor glowed, and a portal to a wooded clearing appeared. A moment later a an Elf and two humans came through the portal. “Lord Baldwin, Duke Tyweld, and Lord Eldris, so good to you to have joined us. We may be the last of the Order left in this part of the globe.” Petera said. He was referring to the Valkarian Order, a group set up to bring Historica into a golden age. Petera had been initiated into the order by Victor Revolword before Victor went mad with power. The Valkarian Order had been created over 300 years ago, and was instrumental in establishing Historica about 104 years ago. Since then the order had gone dormant. That was until about ten years ago when powerful and just nobles began disappearing. This included Dugal and Petera’s own father. In fact, that is how his brother became First Lord of Eastgate to begin with. All over Historica nobles, including the second to last king, had disappeared without a trace. The power void caused by the missing leaders led to corruption in all of the guilds and a weak king in Cedrica. The order came back together and was determined to install real leaders in all of the guilds and the capital. There were even desires to take over Varlyio and other continents beyond for the glory of Historica. Then Victor went crazy. At first the Valkarian Order sided with him, his power play would bring order out of the chaos. But it had become evident that Victor desired power for himself over glory for Historica. Petera had supported Victor until the man finally went mad. Victor had supplied the Spear of Horris to Petera in order to kill and trap his brother. Petera knew that Dugal was part of the old regime, and could never accept what had to be done in Historica to bring glory and strength to the nation. Killing Dugal and taking over Eastgate may have been Victor’s idea, but Petera could see the sense in it. Petera never thought Dugal would return though. Now they had to do the job all over again. “What news of your brother?” asked Lord Baldwin. He was a minor border lord in Avalonia, but he had a lot of men. They were conveniently not fighting the dark elves at the moment. “Well, if he is out there, I am sure he wants the city back. That is why you all are bringing your army south. We will crush the siege against the walls of Eastgate and the war will be won.” Petera Said. “your war.” Eldris said dryly. “We have failed to turn the Revolword incident into a significant change for Historica.” It was odd having an elf there, Eldris’s clan were one of the few elf clans you intermarried with humans frequently, they also had been an important factor in regional politics for as long as Kaliphlin had existed. They were based on the plains between North Kaliphlin and East Avalonia. Eldris was a wizard also, but much less powerful than Petera, although he had ancient magic, which was always dangerous. “Once things are settled here, we can begin our plan to take the throne again. We will have to rebuild armies, and the Order will need Eastgate’s army and navy if we are to secure Kaliphlin in the New Historica.” Petera replied. Without a king, many in the Valkarian order wanted to march on Cedrica to claim a seat of power. Petera agreed, but knew that he must hold on to his city in order to have a position on the new Council of Cedrica. A new king would be crowned, and he would be one of the Kingmakers. First, to take care of Dugal. “I will meet you in two weeks’ time to open the portal for our Mitgardian and Nocturnan allies.” Petera said. “ Why not portal everyone to the woods outside of the city, they would have no warning.” Duke Tyweld said. Tyweld was a very wealthy Avalonian, wealthy enough to pay the Drow to fight for him in this most recent conflict in Avalonia. Schooled in strategy he was not… “We need to spread the men sieging this place thin. They will leave half of their army here, the other half will march north, and we will be able to crush each half one at a time.” Eldris answered. “The more powerful Alleenridders of Mpya Stedor will likely stay here, while the other MacLean leads an army north.” This should not be hard, these two armies were severely beat up during the Revolword War. “Sounds like a plan,” Baldwin chipped in. “Now is a good time to call those who may be willing to join the Valkarian Order to the field.” Petera said. The three men agreed. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* And for that reason, there would be two battles on the horizon. ------------------------------------------------------ The build for this is a WIP that I probably will not finish. It was supposed to be four scenes, the two talking scenes above, and two scenes of Petera's history. Unfortunately, it has sat for a while and I need to get moving with other things. Plus, the battle for the Wither Woods is going to happen in a little over a month, so I had to introduce the Call to Arms and the LDD challenge sooner rather than later. 6. (LCC) The Last Stand. by Mark of Falworth, on Flickr A lone Areani knight faces off against a horde of outlaws! They may outnumber him 100 to 1, but they will never take him alive! 7. King of the Hill Knights, Barbarians, Peasants and Wizards clash to become King of the Hill This is an entry into the Flickr group Lego War’s The Castle Battle Contest, Category 3: Single Stud Battle! Category 3: “Single Stud Battle” How many minifigs can you have battling (and balancing) over one stud of space? Based on a similar contest from times past, this category will test your creative balancing skills to the limit! Hahaha! This is definitely the most enjoyable build I’ve had in a while! Although, I must say—I did expect it to be far more challenging then it turned out to be! I utilized shields as a way to balance more and more figures, as well as having various figures just hanging on for dear life! I also greatly focused on the first figure since he would be holding up everything, and I gave him a shield and a flag pole on his back to attach more peoples. The horse was something I thought to put in about halfway through the build, and I was surprised to see I was able to balance him—in fact, the horse is actually the only part of the build not attached stud wise to any other part—so he’s basically a free floating structure. So, in the end, I’m very happy with my entry, and my new found balancing skills! Enjoy ~Nemo

  9. CCCXI Welsh Warband by Mark of Falworth, on Flickr CCCXI Welsh Warband by Mark of Falworth, on Flickr CCCXI Welsh Warband by Mark of Falworth, on Flickr Throughout all of history, there is perhaps no people who have ever put up such a spirited and determined defense of their country as those of Wales. A culture literally pushed to the ends of the earth by waves of hostile invaders, they still strive for their precious freedom. Lightly armed, armored, and unparalleled in skill with the longbow, they are very dangerous, to say the least, in their mountainous, rugged homeland. An entry to the Custom Faction Category of the CCCXI http://www.classic-c...t11/prizes.html Thanks for viewing and have a great day!
  10. Here is a small freebuild for the LCC that I did. It takes place directly after the siege of winmore pass. More Pics here. Enjoy!
  11. Tomorrow marks the birthday of Gotham City War, a great fan made Lego RPG Batman group that I’m a moderator of. This creation was built in honor of its first birthday, as well as a marker for the fifth round of game play which also begins tomorrow. If you don’t know, GCW is an RPG style group based in the DC universe where members play as heroes and villains attempting to gain control of Gotham. Anyways enjoy this Batman Party MOC! ~Captain Nemo
  12. This is one of the first MOC Historical Buildings I made, so please comment on what could be done better (also my first post) Lego Reich is a small state which lies on a peninsula at the north of Germany. Its ethnicity is a mixture of Scandinavians (including Danes especially) and Germans. During the Middle Ages, Lego Reich fought with a skillfull, though small army, defending it from attackers both from Viking Norway and Germany. The unification of various Germanic states excluded Lego Reich, and the growing threat of Prussia was becoming a crucial danger to Lego Reich. Skillfully, the monarchs of Lego Reich held their status in Europe by negotiating with the Kaisers and Leaders of Germany. During World War One, Lego Reich kept itself out of the bloody conflict once again by means of diplomacy, but continuing disputes over trade lead to Germany declaring war on Lego Reich, invading it in the end of 1917. The war lasted for 5 months, but excellently deployed Lego Reich soldiers held off against a technologically superior enemy. A ceasefire was signed in May 1918, but there was no official peace agreement. Germany surrendered in November 1918, and Lego Reich soldiers began attacking Germany, moving 2km South of the Pre-war borderline, occupying what used to be a series of fortifications built by Prussia against Lego Reich. (Lego History continues) Prussian Border Crossing Here is part of a wall which was not demolished after World War One. It was abandoned to the forces of nature. Here are seen a platoon of Lego Reich Soldiers by the Prussian Border Crossing. The former border crossing between Prussia and Lego Reich The Weapons store for the soldiers, now just a home for plants and bikes German: Kingdom of Prussia. The signpost which once marked the limits of the German Empire. Something behind the gates!! It turns out to be an artillery emplacement. :D What I enjoy about these small dioramas is trying to make it show detail, because it is the small things which count as well. It would have been nice if I could have more pieces XD. (That is my grey lego gone :( ) Thanks for watching
  13. For those who are unaware, A little while ago I posted a picture of one war elephant chasing a lenfel soldier, it provoked some hilarious responses and since then there has been a friendly rivalry going on between Loreos and Lenfald in the LCC roleplay. So, I built a second one hoping to get a slight edge over my Lenfel friends. Thanks for viewing and have a great day!
  14. Lydia and I had traveled far, finally reaching the Council of Jarls, which was held in Arkadia, a small Viking town. The council was a needed event, because the Viking villages weren't very tactful in their dealings. Thus, a joint council was held every 6 months. Jarl Arian, and Wulf were here, not 200 feet from the gate.....but then Lydia found her father. Ragnar Redbrook, Jarl of Lydia's home village of Redwood, was there. And so was her father, chained to Ragnar. "So this is your daughter, Mikhail," Ragnar sneered. "I bet she can't wait to see you die. Because that's what I have planned for you," Ragnar continued, an evil glint in his eye. I didn't doubt for a second that he was capable of it. Ragnar was known for his bloody ways, and wasn't exactly popular. But he was dangerous, and that kept him Jarl. Lydia was scared, I could tell. But she drew her bow, ready to avenge her father, should Ragnar kill him. I, too, had no wish to see a murder, but Ragnar was a very skilled warrior, and I knew I couldn't beat him. But then the tide turned. Jarl Arian, Jarl of Skaljarik, and Wulf Stormbreaker, Captain of the Voyageur, burst out the gate. Arian was armed with his sword, and the Shield of his town. I could tell Arian was angry, and wise men stayed away from Jarl Arian when he was angry. "Let the man go, Ragnar Redbrook," Jarl Arian bellowed. "Or I will personally separate your head from your body!" Well, I though, there goes negotiation. But I knew why Arian was this angry. Ragnar had killed one of Arian's friends, and Arian hadn't forgotten. Simply put, nether of these men were people you wanted as enemies. Lydia had an arrow notched. An then it dawned on me what she was going to try. She was going to try and hit Ragnar in the hand. She was an excellent shot, so I didn't think she would miss. But she did miss, a centimeter to the left. Instead of getting Ragnar in the hand, it shot him in the heart. For one second, everyone fell silent. Then Olaf, Lydia's father, rushed to her. "Thank goodness you're alive," they told each other. Meanwhile, I moved to speak with Jarl Arian, and Wulf. "You preformed well," Arian told me. "I didn't do anything," I replied. "No, Logan, you did. You accompanied one of our kin, even though you didn't have to. I appreciate that." Well, I didn't see it that way, but it never hurt to have Jarl Arian's appreciation. "As for you, young lady," Arian continued. "You saved my cleaning my sword." I didn't understand for a second, and then wished I hadn't understood. Arian had a way of putting things as bluntly as possible. But I was happy Lydia had re-untied with her father, but then I wondered... "Lydia, where are you and your father going to live," I asked. I assumed they weren't going back to Redwood, as Lydia had just killed the Jarl of the town. "We're coming to Skaljarik, if we can," Olaf replied. "Certainly you can," boomed Arian. As we marched toward our home, Jarl Arian motioned for me to walk next to him. "Logan," he replied. "I am going to need you in the near future." "Why," I asked. "We may have just started a war," Arian replied. "Certainly, we sparked some tension. And I want you to be one of our war leaders." "But I've only fought one battle," I replied. "You don't understand," Jarl Arian countered. "Back in Skaljarik, who can beat you in chess?" "You," I replied, remembering that Arian was the only one to have defeated me in chess. "But that's the point," Arian replied. "You have a knack for strategy. And we're going to need it." Builder's Notes: Sorry I didn't get an overall picture, but the build turned out pretty well, I think. I especially liked the river....but tell me what you think! Author's Notes: The story is a bit short, as always, but y;all have told me you like it. Thus be it. Also, check out what I just got from Bricklink below.....
  15. Nu-Earth: a planet ravaged by war, its atmosphere poisoned by chemical weapons. In this battle ground between the Norts and the Southers only the Genetic Infantrymen can survive. The Rogue Trooper is one such soldier, created by the Southers to be able to thrive in Nu-Earth’s hostile and toxic environment. He is the sole surviving GI of the military disaster known as the Quartz Zone Massacre and now he hunts the traitorous Souther General who caused it. With him are the memory implants of three of his dead comrades, Helm, Gunnar and Bagman, who are installed in his helmet, rifle and bag, and who through their integration with his equipment, offer Rogue a further edge over his Nort enemies. Rogue Trooper was created by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons and first appeared in the British Science Fiction comic 2000AD (home of Judge Dredd). The series was hailed for its excellent artwork thanks to the craftsmanship of Gibbons and other artists such as Cam Kennedy, Colin Wilson and Brett Ewins. The character now belongs to game developers, Rebellion. You can read the first ever strip on the BBC’s website: here. This is a little different to my usual MOCs, my first attempt at sci-fi in fact, but I was encouraged to make it by the competition over at the Lego War Group over on Flickr. Anyway, it’s always to step outside of one’s comfort zone every once in a while, and I’ve always had a soft spot for the Rogue Trooper. Thanks for viewing, your C&C is most welcome!
  16. It is easy to find something on Ord Mantell. As long as you’re looking for something that hasn’t been destroyed yet. The facility we’re headed to is surrounded by junk, and seems to be mostly built with junk. But still, it has something… different. It seems like the one place on this planet where something constructive is happening. Approaching a free space that seems supposed to be a landing platform, that thought becomes contradictive. This constructivism seems to come forth from destruction. Yes, the equipment seems to be made from old parts, nothing fancy here. And the facility seems to be made to recycle the pieces of junk that have replaced the planet’s vegetation. That explains why this facility is a concurrent to that… cancer on Fondor. There, they squeeze the planet out, not caring about the consequences. Here, they relieve the planet. For once, industry makes me happy. But the ominous absence of employers, the lack of movement and the complete silence remind me of the reason why we’re here. We’re here to find this constructivism probably destroyed… As the cloud of dust settles from our landing, probably the only living human in the environment approaches. A lone, shadowy figure. “We’re here to investigate the murder of your employer” There’s no escaping the truth. “Investigate? No one ever comes here to investigate! This is Ord Mantell. Half of us don’t even know what the word ‘police’ even means. But alright, I don’t want to mess with you. I hope you Imperials will punish the Rebels for what they did. The crime scene is this way. I’m the janitor by the way” Since the facility has no hover platforms, we walk. On the left, giant chaotic heaps of junk. On the right, neatly stacks of cubic blocks of metal. We ascend a riding maintenance platform to have a better view of the heart of this part of the facility. [soNE Ep. VI] 3 - Just another horror by Bert.VR, on Flickr “The trash compactor here is where it happened. The Rebels must have used this very platform to drop their victims in it. A technician once told me there’s a scanner in the machine that measures composition of whatever is in it. That’s to keep the metal pure, and it should prevent people getting caught in the machine as well. But those murderers were prepared, and as far as I can tell, they overwrote the system. Their victims died a horrible dead…” Atrocious. The bounty hunter could just have shot the boss. Maybe he thought that wouldn’t deliver his message clearly enough. No, he disposed of his victim as if the human was nothing more than a piece of junk. And in an act of perverse symbolism, he used this machine that gives new life to the junk to take the life of something as beautiful as a human. A human that once had conceived this great facility, that had tried to give a new life to this planet, hope to the people. And now he’s just another victim… No, it can’t be true… “And why? The boss was a good man. And his family … they didn’t even deserve a worthy dead.” Words fail me. Thoughts fail me. Goatm does the talking. He doesn’t seem to be affected at all. “How do you know it were the Rebels?” “They left a datapad behind, probably the one they used to overwrite the system. I haven’t had a closer look, but it is just too obvious. We don’t need an investigation. And who else would do this? Aren’t those terrorists the only ones who should commit such atrocities? Aren’t they the only beasts that are cruel enough? No one dares to come to work anymore, this might be a sign. I don’t know why, but it seems they want this facility closed. Maybe to prevent people having the means to defend themselves. But only they would be cruel enough to take away the hope of all the workers. I’m the only one left, just looking around to see if something could be of further use…” “Still, you can have no objection for my colleague taking a closer look here. I would like to have a word with you in the meantime.” I descend the platform, still baffled. The two are heading somewhere else with the platform. I can’t get over it. Some moments ago, I despised the bounty hunter, but I thought he wasn’t the only one to blame. There were still the people who gave him the task. If they hadn’t given it, he wouldn’t have done it. But now… murdering the family of the target could never have been the assignment. He did it for no reason, purely for the pleasure that gave him. The murdered boss was a businessman. He knew there were risks to what he did. He could have taken precautions. But his family… they had never taken the risk. Yet the bounty hunter took them, and killed them in the most atrocious way for absolutely no reason. This is no war. This is no job. This is plain murder. Of the most atrocious kind. But this bounty hunter, this plain murderer, he got away with it. Nobody suspects him. They suspect the Rebels. He even gets handsomely paid for this. This can’t go on. But nobody does something. Nobody even seems to care. Nobody knows… This is war. With all these battles going on, all these casualties, all this misery, such a murder is just ‘normal’. People die every day. They die by the hundred. Why care about these unimportant victims? It isn’t even important to find out why they died, not even who killed them. There is no police anyway. These things just happen every day. We should accept this. What has war done to the people? It has made a murderer of many a soldier. And it has made everyone indifferent. Nobody cares anymore. Nobody cares that there are more people dying than living these days. Whether it is in the war or not. From time to time, if someone gets killed they know, people wake up and think this can’t go on. But only to fall asleep again. It’s the war that killed them, and what can we do about the war? This just happens. Killing has become the new normal. How can this go on? How can people keep adoring murderers like Boba Fett? How can we want to thank him for his good work? How can I participate in this madness? I have to wake up, and stay awake. Before I can even start to think how to end this, how to wake up the world, I have to wake up myself. How? I have no idea, but this murdering ‘hero’ is not getting a thank you card from me. But I will find him. Datapad, show me the way to the land of the living. [soNE Ep. VI] 3 - I'm going to find him by Bert.VR, on Flickr _______________ The story continues in goatman461's build, right here. _______________ Thanks for reading another one of my heavy stories. I hope you like it as well as the build, and i do hope it makes you think. Let me know! I wanted to do something else for Ord Mantell. Because it would fit my story, and because making wreckage and pile it is just impossible in LDD. I hope this unexpected take can still please you. I tried to keep everything plausible to build, but with the complicated mechanics, it is often hard to keep track of the stability. And I know those pieces that make up the pillars of the platform have a certain flexibility. Maybe they're rigid enough to keep it up. If not, this would be the equivalent of fishing rope here, and I hope that's okay. Hopefully, this doesn't offend anyone. Finally, if some parts look a bit strange to you, that's due to artefacts in the render. Olive green renders horribly, more like sand green, so I had to adjust everything, and this might have some strange implications. Also, there were some polygons astray, and I had to edit them out. Hope it isn't to offensive for the eye... Thanks again, and if anyone want to have a look around the model, here is the LDD file.
  17. Then out spake brave Horatius, The Captain of the gate: “To every man upon this earth Death cometh soon or late. And how can man die better Than facing fearful odds For the ashes of his fathers And the temples of his gods, From Horatius at the Bridge by Thomas Babington, Lord Macaulay (1800–1859) In around 506 BC a large Etruscan army lead by Lars Poresna, King of Clusium, marched on Rome. Among their number was Rome’s recently deposed King, Tarquinius Superbus, who hoped that, following a successful campaign, he would be returned to the city’s throne. Having recently engaged an army of Tarquin’s in an indecisive battle at Aricia, the Romans were expecting an invasion and hastily attempted to construct a fort on the Janiculum, a hill on the western side of the Tiber. However, owing to inadequate scouting, the troops stationed at the fort were surprised and overcome by the Eutruscan force, which proceeded to occupy the hill. From the Janiculum, Porsena’s army launched an attack and advanced on Pons Sublicius. The Roman forces were now in disarray and the future of the newly formed republic looked bleak. However, just as all seemed lost, a soldier named Horatius Cocles, accompanied by two others, namely Titus Herminius Aquilinus and Spurius Lartius (which, intriguingly, are Etruscan names) stepped forward to defend the bridge, using its narrow width to reduce the effectiveness of the large enemy force that bore down upon them. There they fought while to their rear the citizens of Rome gathered and, using but hand axes, began to chop down the bridge. Herminius and Spurius retreated as the bridge was almost destroyed, but Horatius fought on until the bridge had fallen, leaping into the river in full armour and swimming its width while coming under enemy fire. The attack was thus repulsed and Porsena forced into an unsuccessful siege of the city. That, at least, is how the story goes according to Rome’s poets and historians. There have however always been questions about the story’s veracity and even Livy, whose history was as much about promoting Augustus Caesar’s legitimacy as it was about recording past events, casts doubt over some of its claims. It’s likely that Porsena succeeded in capturing Rome, for a short period at least (though there is no evidence to suggest that Tarquin’s throne was ever restored), and that Horatius’ exploits were later invented as a means of masking past defeats and promoting the idea of Rome’s inherent superiority. The Romans were, after all, skilled in the art of propaganda, a modern Latin word with ancient roots. Whatever the truth, I think it makes for a fun little MOC. You may notice that I’ve avoided using the familiar Roman Minifigure helmets and armour. This is because during this period the Roman Army was still fighting in the Greco-Etruscan style, where the phalanx was the master of the battlefield. This is over a hundred years before Rome comes into conflict with the Samnites and subsequently adopts the maniple system and around 400 years before Marius implements his reforms. The army was therefore vastly different in appearance and style to the one most people are familiar with. This is why I’ve gone for the Corinthian helmets, Hoplon shields and bronze and Linothorax type armour. All photos can be seen by going to my Flickr account. Anyway, many thanks for viewing, your C&C is very welcome. MW
  18. A short animation about the Red River War, featuring mainly the Comanche Indians, buffalo hunters and the US army. The reason why there is text is for speech is because I am really bad at voice acting! Please give feedback so I can improve...
