Will "Bulk Bricks" packs ever come back?
Off the wall replied to Inzane's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I got mine at a Barnes and Noble store before the official release date. I see it's no longer listed on the Barnes and Noble website and shows as sold out on the Lego.com US website. I bought it, opened it and decided it wasn't really meant for me. The book that comes with 21050 is great and if I had a child who was interested in architecture, I'd certainly buy it for her/him. It's a very good and interesting product. Someday, when I'm in the mood, I'll probably list it on ebay. Until then, it's a dust collector on the shelf. To keep on topic, if you want bulk, 21050 has bulk. Not much color, but bulk it has...... -
Okay, I just got off the phone with the local Lego store. For whatever it means, they told me official release date is January 1st and they haven't been informed by corporate of any early VIP release date. For what it's worth........

What Lego-related thing did you do today?
Off the wall replied to Savage Oppress's topic in Community
I'm curious as to cost. Sometimes I bid for sport ( but pay if I do win) on ebay. I was runner up last week on a CC that sold for about $850 with box and instructions, which is about what I paid for mine last spring. Btw, fortunately I do get outbid the vast majority of times. Good luck with it. With over 2000 parts, I'm sure you could substitute a few without losing the character of the building. Might even make it better, eh? -

About six weeks ago my wife was out of town so,to kill time, I bought 42009 ( the mobile crane). I learned very quickly that I'm not a Technic person. I don't have the brains or patience.....even though I completed the build. So, today I got everything together and mailed a picture of it to a friend. She is going to give it to her nine year old nephew. He will learn two important lessons about life in my country. First, you can get something for nothing. Second, he will probably spend a lot of hours during his life correcting someone else's mistakes....in this case, mine with one set of gears. No more Technic for me. It's great stuff, but I don't have the brain for it. I'm going to stick to clicking bricks together with modular buildings and the like. :-) -

Same thing I did earlier in the week......bid up a retired modular building auction on ebay to over $800. Just got outbid, so I'm out of the auction. There are limits, even for crazy folks like me...... -
I've had a successful career. I play with lego. End of story. No rationalizations needed.

Paid Membership with perks? Any interest?
Off the wall replied to Siegfried's topic in Forum Information and Help
Random, sporadic donations are just another way of basically allowing something for nothing. Many never donate, or say they will and don't, and continue to ride on the coattails of the contributions of others. The developers/administrators devote a lot of their time, and probably money, to maintaining this quality website. I would make a commitment to a yearly or monthly fee to support their efforts. Until they get this ironed out, I would suggest they go the donation route so that immediate contributions can be made. Seriously, donations are a sporadic system with no steady revenue stream. It's one thing to say you'll donate, it's another thing to pay for premium services on a continuing basis. Besides, those who support the site, whether it be through time, labor or money, should have some perk for doing so. I can't image HBO (premium American cable tv entertainment channel) would suddenly forget monthly fees in favor of turning the service on to everyone and depending on random donations. -
Yes, but most Lego products would be ideal for the Amazon drone delivery system. :-) As far as the the Lego store goes, I'll probably skip the store and buy from lego.com or Amazon when the new stuff comes out in January. Wish I could be as enthusiastic about my Lego store as you are about yours.

Just ordered another Brandenburg Gate for $19.99 with free two day shipping. Robie House is $149.99 and Fallingwaters is $74.99. I won't go into all of the discounts, but the UN building is also discounted. USA amazon

Wow. Sensational. But, it had to be because, after all, they were on on mission from god. -

Off the wall replied to Siegfried's topic in Forum Information and Help
I would pay a monthly or yearly flat fee for premiums features. I would not 'donate'. -
Thanks. Well, at least here in America, there will something to do on New Years day other that watching football and drinking too much.

Okay, so I'll gladly admit that I'm not jumping up and down complimenting the design of the PR. With that said, as a VIP member how soon can I buy this? I've been told Dec 13, Dec 16 and Jan 1. Any definitive answer? I need a new object for my sarcasm and the PR will work nicely. :-) Thanks and happy whatever holiday works for you......

Thanks. That really puts it all in perspective with a certain Dr Phil feeling. I was wondering why this feeling of insecurity had enveloped me. :-)

Looks like Fire Brigade is history on Lego.com. I checked target.com and saw it listed for over $200.....huh?

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

I see where Fire Brigade is now listed as sold out on Lego.com -
One other thing on this matter. When someone brings a topic like this to a hobby forum, we have to remember 'context'. What is the OPs life situation? Certainly, in some instances collecting toys designed for very small children can be justified as just what the person likes and nothing more. They need a hobby, it's their money, go for it. However, if a collector is being challenged on age appropriateness or being asked when he gives something to a child 'are you sure that isn't for you'?, then maybe something else is going on in addition to the toys. Not saying that's the case in this thread, but it is certainly something to take into consideration. Is the 'hobby' representative of other immature behavior? Does the hobbyist have trouble with required adult activities like work? Family budget? Taking responsibility? Again, not saying any of those apply to this thread, but you have to be careful that you have the full context of someone's problem/issue. The interest is toys can by symptomatic of other maturity/responsibility issues in the persons life. So, any definitive response to a situation like this is very difficult in the world of the Internet. We can have our opinions, but we usually have to fill in a lot of the blanks with our own speculation before we reach our respective conclusions.
-
Maybe, but not because a 57 Chevy or a vintage BMW says ages 7 to 10 on the box. It's a question of the amount of money spent and not appreciating an old car rather than just thinking someone is playing with age inappropriate products.
-
Okay, but the root cause of the problem expressed by the OP appears to be based on age appropriateness. All of the hobbies mentioned by you are associated on a regular basis with adults. Buying a toy that was designed by the manufacturer for children under 10 clearly raises the eyebrows of some people. Not just a toy, but a toy the actually requires you, or at a minimum suggests, that you sit down and build/play with it. If you are using Lego as an educational tool or as a way to bond with your child, that's great and should be easily recognizable by others. But, if your enjoyment of the Lego product comes across as solely based on your wants/needs...then be prepared for some people to raise their eyebrows and not understand why you would want to collect it. I have to explain why I collect the 16+ age group Lego products. So, don't be surprised if collecting those geared to a younger audience require you to do a little more explaining. Of course, if it was me, I'd just say. 'I like lego. You got a problem with that?' Because sometimes the more you try to explain something, the worse it gets. This post may be a case in point..
-
Okay, so as an adult you shouldn't have to explain why you buy Lego. With that said, there is Lego and then there is, well, Lego. Some lego is clearly targeted for AFOLs. If you are an adult collecting Duplo or Friends, well, I might think that you had some 'issues' (unless you are collecting with your child or family as a group activity).

Sets you have not opened yet ... and why?
Off the wall replied to DrJB's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Well, congrats on getting to devote more time to things that really are important. Btw, if a person was diversified, the 2008 didn't mean a whole lot in your long term planning. Sure, I saw my stocks and mutual funds go down, but they've all more than rebounded. I know some people who sold at the bottom and they did get hurt. Had they rode out the storm, they would have had gains by now. Instead, they chose to lock in their losses. -

Lots of obsessive compulsive/hoarding behavior on display here. Not saying that's bad, not judging, because I can't. I'm the same way. At least nobody has played the 'investment' card. I have the modulars NIB going back through the Green Grocer (besides the ones I've built and have on display). Oh, the joys of OCD..... -
