LEGO Architecture 2015 News & Discussion
Off the wall replied to tafkatb's topic in Special LEGO Themes
So, is this entire series on life support? I went to the Lego architecture website and it doesn't hold much promise for the future. Doesn't seem like it would be hard to find five or six interesting buildings a year. -
'Falling' is probably the wrong verb for some of us. I'll buy extra sets to expand the original. It's a lot easier for me than buying bricks and waiting weeks for them to arrive through PAB. I call the store and make the two mile drive over there and pick up the set. Pieces that are useless to me wind up in a five gallon bin. In the corner cafe instructions, they included ideas on how to combine multiple CCs. I'd like current sets to also include the designers ideas of how multiple copies of the same set can be incorporated into one larger building. So, people like me really haven't fallen for anything. We simply recognize that the interests of those who enjoyed what has been referred to as the 'gen 1' modulars have pretty much been abandoned by TLG in favor of a modular series that's more of a City type product with less value than the original modulars. No hard feelings. Someone changed my toys. Not my health insurance coverage.

The PR and DO are nothing more than starting points for me. Buy them, expand them and discard hundreds of parts that I can't use and don't value. Of course, it's unfortunate that either multiple copies of the same set and/or PAB orders have to be purchased in order to achieve what some of you have referred to as a gen 1 modular. Not everyone is inclined to make additional purchases to compensate for what should probably have been included with the set to begin with.

Seven days at Sandals Grande St Lucia.

Nice move by TLG. You now have to buy two sets to get the same type building you formerly got by buying just one set.
-
It was nice to see a review with so many pictures. Now, I'll buy two and pick a brick the parts I need for the modification. If I bought three or four, I'd have hundreds (if not thousands) of parts that I'd never use.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Off the wall replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I try. I think the DO may provide the basis and components to try making a pharmacy. The blue side of it is a waste for me, but the other side has some components that will at least lead to an MOC attemp by me for either the pharmacy or Sun Records. Buy a few extra DOs and see where it takes me. Wishing you a a merry Christmas and great 2015. -

Sorry, not me. I can't deal with playability and stories. -

Thanks....it will go right next to the Sun Records building. Btw, the pharmacies I remember were corner buildings. Lego version wouldn't have to be, but that's how I remember the real ones. -

When I walked into that type of pharmacy, there was a comic book rack on the left, a soda counter on the left beyond it stretching almost the length of the small building, a magazine/newspaper display on the right, in the middle was all of the non prescription items and in the back was a slightly elevated actual pharmacy area where the prescriptions were filled. A black and while linoleum type floor. Neon signs in the window. Oh, I almost forgot. There was frequently a tube tester on the right of the entrance. Next to a cashiers area (where you also presented your rolls of film to be sent out and developed). Only thing I would change is to place the neon green cross on the outside that you see on many European pharmacies. The exterior was, of course, a dark red brick. Sometimes, there was an apartment over the drug store/pharmacy. -

Residential is a logical MOC and maybe the easiest (I've done a few). The PS, GG and haunted house instructions are all great starting points in building your own residential building. I've done two residences based on HH instructions and one flower shop/residence based on PS instructions. I've also done multiples of the PS apartment building to give the look of a residential street with several residential buildings. Doesn't mean I wouldn't welcome an official residential building, but I'd rather see the designers concentrate on more unique themed buildings. -
Outstanding. Really like the exterior colors.

Seriously, you really nailed it. Excellent design.

You'd better not have any plans of plopping this down in the midst of your city just because you have some economically distressed mini figs! That's a warning! I have a zip lock bag full of minifigs that are more than ready to reassemble themselves and march on your TH in protest. No justice, no peace!

My story line would be subprime lenders cranking out loans to unqualified buyers and causing a global financial crisis. But, wait, that's already happened. Back to the drawing, or writing, board. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Right. That's why real building design might not be in the thoughts of modular designers. Many real structures are so repetitive. I would like to see more large, realistic builds in the architecture series. More releases. Things like a 4000 piece Chrysler building. Then, I could see making the modulars more like fantasy land with their story lines and detailed non structural pieces. I mean, give me a 3000 to 4000 piece real building every year along with a few smaller ones in the architecture series, and I'll forget about what bothers me with the modulars. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

I keep reading that the GE is a boring build. Fine. I can understand why people say that due to what they call the 'repetitive' nature of the build, but.......aren't certain buildings just inherently boring by virtue of their real world design? Most real world buildings like Robie House in the architecture series or the Grand Emporium (Inspired, I've been told, by an English store) have a design that requires repetitive building activity. The only way to get around it is to modify the real world building that's the inspiration for the modular or design a building from scratch. The merit I see in a build like the DO is that the designer can create an experience involving a build that is non repetitive. However, my MOD will probably turn it into a more repetitive build. Just because I can find buildings like the Sagrada familia and headline it doesn't mean most (not all) real buildings aren't repetitive. Especially the more modern ones. So, to a certain extent, I suppose I should thank Lego designers for thinking outside of the box on some of the modulars. Doesn't mean I like the design, but it's better than having the hundreds of cheese wedges that you have in the Tower Bridge. Repetition......fine in recreating something like the tower bridge. Not so fine in the modular series. -
Unfortunately, there's nothing I want or need until January 1st. On top of that, I ordered the Research Institute last week and still haven't received it. Scheduled for delivery Monday Dec 22. I suppose due to the Christmas rush at FedEx and the heavy volume at the Lego DC, things are moving slowly. Usually, FedEx Ground has it to me on the third business day after I order. This time, FedEx handed it off to the post office and I'm looking at a nine day total transit time.

You've recreated one of the all time scariest movie scenes. Great job! -

Look at the previous page. I think Moebius118 has some insight. -
At least one website is reporting that Lego will be offering double points against in the USA on December 21st.

List your favourite modulars in order of preference, and explain why?
Off the wall replied to glendo's topic in LEGO Town
MS Erik Brok was the AFOL who designed this set. He passed away shortly after its release. In memory of him, I will list it first. Besides, I do like it for all of its quirkiness. GG Seems to represent everything a modular can be. Nice building, nice detail, good colors. GE To really appreciate this set, you need to expand it. Classic design. Harrods? Since I've bought 14 of these and actually opened and assembled/used parts from 13 of them, I guess from a financial point of view it should be at the top of the list. But, it isn't. CC No wasted parts for an interior. :-) FB Nice detail, great colors. Works without having to expand it. Gold hats. Roll up doors. PC Soooooo SoCal......nice choice of colors, red base plate. PS Two buildings that can be separated to give a city design more options. TH Not bad. But you must combine two or three sets to get the right proportions. UN Unknown set. But, it has to be better than....big surprise.....NOT...... drum roll................... PR My reasons? Seriously? Haven't we been down this road too many times? Rhetorical, but..... YES!!!!!!!
