Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Basiliscus replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
I just wanted to say that the Kaliphlin civil war challenge is awesome! Great work to everyone, but especially SkaForHire for creating and organising. The story has been great and there's been some unique concepts (I sense that your wargaming background was to thank for that). Sadly I am not able to build right now, but wanted to wish you all the best. The Emir of Gorr would probably have sided with Ulandus, so I'll be rooting for them! -
Hi all, A while back I posted my medieval abbey in this forum. Thanks to everyone who posted there, sorry if I didn't reply to specific questions but I was away at the show and since I came back I have been away a lot with work. I am hoping that this time I can respond to questions in this thread! As I mentioned the abbey was part of a collaborative display created by 8 builders (names are Flickr links): James Pegrum, Barney Main, Luke Hutchinson, Harry Russell, Steve Snasdell, Jimmy Clynche, Tom Coleman and your humble narrator. This display was on show at the Great Western Lego Show in Swindon, which took place in October 2013. The display was approximately 4m by 5m, and due to a cutout area measured 14m2. Although most of us had never met before in person, we had great fun displaying it and enjoyed our weekend. We might even do another display at future shows! Below are a few photos, although a few more will be appearing in the coming days. There will eventually be [Prev] and [Next] links on every photo to take you through them (42 'official' photos) but we are waiting on a few people posting theirs so please be patient! This time I promise I will answer any relevant questions 8 Display from South by Cuahchic, on Flickr 1 Display from South-East by Cuahchic, on Flickr 5 Town Square From Above by Cuahchic, on Flickr 9 - Overall view of Tigelfah by peggyjdb, on Flickr 1 Tigelfah Castle and town by peggyjdb, on Flickr 8. I am very lucky to be partaking in part of a collaboration at STEAM 2013 along with 7 other fantastic British builders. We are building a medieval village, circa early 14th century. James has already posted his castle. My section is an abbey, loosely based on Tintern Abbey in Wales. Below is a selection of photos (I will add more after the show): Ashes to Ashes by Cuahchic, on Flickr Nicholas fitz Theodoric by Cuahchic, on Flickr Monks Procession by Cuahchic, on Flickr ********************************* I would encourage anyone based in the UK to make it along to Swindon this year to see the whole display (>14 metres squared).

Lovely work. Love the overall scene but especially (as others have mentioned) the angle of the bridge. Great idea all round!

I think we all need to make a distinction between the drow and Nocturnus in general, remember that the rightful rulers are being usurped here! -

Seems like there is a lot happening at the moment! I am taking a small break from GoH until challenge 4 in announced, I have a few other things I would like to build, but I will still keep up to date with the situation! However, I am holiday next week so it might be a couple of weeks before I am back on-line, good luck in the contest results everyone! -

Got to agree with gabe, just go for it Mikel Kalores, you can always adapt it for Challenge 4 if time is tight! Get some WIP photos up when they are ready! -
Thank you! I wanted to give the inside of the cavern a blue hue, so I backlit it with a fluorescent lamp with my camera on incandescent mode. That's why it looks blue! No Photoshop required for this one. Thanks mate. Yeah, the guardian was a bit of an afterthought to be honest, I was running out of time! I wanted to do something other than the usual suspects (dragons, big snakes, etc) for as interesting and well-built as most of them are I wanted to try and stand out a bit. I was also trying to keep in with the themed building, and the idea for jungle ruins was wild animals! Next time I will need to make more of an effort. Thanks very much for the comment Robuko. Your own entry made my top 5 in the voting. The SNOT roof in the cave was created by using finger hinges, if you put one facing one way and the other upside-down, then you can create a 1 plate thick reversal of studs. I had to use quite a lot of them to take the weight of the roof. The ape was supposed to be like the ape-monsters in the works of Robert E. Howard, specifically the Conan tales, which I just finished reading. The idea was that the wizard experimented on wild animals, and he accidentally turned himself into an ape-man and loses some of his previous memories, but as he is close to death, they come back and he realises what kind of life he has lived (i.e. a bad one, hence the tears). It's a bit highbrow I know, but I wanted to add a slightly deeper dimension to the story!

Lovely work! I really like the stone work, colour choices (especially the blue roof) and the angled tower. Your weather vane at the top of the tower is most excellent!

A great entry! I love the small details, and the photography is top-notch. I also thought the story was very well-written.

A fantastic entry for Challenge 3. The size is epic, the bridge is great, and the small details really make it stand out. This was one of my top 5 entries! Good job!

Nice MOC, love the forced perspective!

Thanks mate, that answers my question! -
Totally agree with this post. I don't understand why we need to multiply it up. You can look at it one of two ways - either this is only a sample of the total army, or the armies are small. The latter might seem hard to believe, but who says we need to have population densities like the middle ages? In the dark ages, armies were probably only a few hundred, and more than 20 men would be considered a war-band (especially since most people were farmers, and professional warriors were very expensive). The Emir of Gorr can field 150-200 men, most (around 120) of whom are tribesman who cannot be kept in the field indefinitely, as they are needed to tend to their cattle etc. His household troops, who are professional warriors and are available all year round, probably number less than 50. If say that 10 men using the techniques of the time (e.g. subsistence farming, herding etc) can produce an excess of 10%, then to keep 50 men fully fed would require 500 farmers! Therefore I'd like to think that is a pretty impressive army!

Fantastic work mate! excellent entry all round. I like the different builds you have presented. The photo editing with the map at the back is cool. A great entry for Kaliphlin, and good luck in the contest!

Fantastic entry! The diversity of your scenes is mind-boggling. My favourite thing is the lighting, you've done a great job with that. It really helps to make this entry stand out. Good luck!

Kaliphlin Guild: Homepage, Sign-up and Discussion
Basiliscus replied to Si-MOCs's topic in Guilds of Historica
Well, after a solid 7 hours sleep, a shower, and a hot meal, I feel like a member of the human race again! I have tried to comment on most of the Kaliphlin Challenge 3 entries, but any I've missed I will comment later today. And I can't agree with robuko more - the standard of entries has been astronomical from all guilds. But Kaliphlin have several solid entries, and while I can't say whether one of our entries will win, I am confident our guild will finish with the most points. One thing I love about being part of this guild in particular, is that although we don't have very many members there is a solid core of regulars who pump out consistently excellent entries. Another quick question - am I right in understanding that this round is a public vote? How exactly will this work, will it be a combination of judges scores and the votes, or just the latter? I seem to have missed where this was announced. And gabe, that lighting is fantastic. It really adds value to the MOC. Well played! -
Quest for the water crystal - The isle with no name
Basiliscus replied to Gabe's topic in Guilds of Historica
Nice work mate. Great concept and well executed. Your scene at the start is well done too. The lighting effects are cool. And I also thought pretending that the island was moving by changing the angle of the photo was clever. Very realistic effect. Good luck in the contest! Great to have you in the guild. -
Very original. I love the concept, and you've executed it well. The colours are delightful. Your guardian is brilliant too, the whole scene is mesmerising. Well played!

Great work Christoph. First of all, the concept is incredible! My mind has truly been blown there. Some of your special effects (e.g. the fish-eye) are very cool. The flower is lovely too, as it the round base. Good luck in the contest, I am glad you are in my guild!
