  1. Really nice build! Loving the reeds and the soldiers lifting their weapons above their heads. Nice work
  2. If all historical builds are included then that could affect the outcome greatly by the end of the challenge - imagine if someone built lots of entries and then switched, it could totally change the outcome! It might be better to allow anyone to switch once during the whole contest, and builds after the switch count towards the new side. This better simulates that historical builds were contributions towards the war efforts of the previous faction, and new builds contribute towards the new faction. Maybe SkaForHire will have a better idea of how to do this?
  3. I can't see anyone objecting to that. Petty Kings were commonplace in the late-Dark and early-Middle ages, so it's not that uncommon. As SkaForHire says, as long it's your character doesn't try to claim Nocturnus or Historica no-one will mind! You could even make it a point of contention with his/her neighbours for bonus story arcs.
  4. Nice work! Looks the Desert King is rocking the early builds. Another great entry for the contest, here's hoping Ulandus and the High Council can respond...
  5. LoL at the mechanism for pumping the water, the carrots dangling is very ingenious! Lovely architecture on the aqueduct as well
  6. Lovely scene! Those Egyptian style soldiers are great - just how I imagined the Desert King's warriors. Good work
  7. Lovely architecture, fits well with how I'd imagine the Desert King's lands. Also, the Egyptian style soldiers fit in perfectly. The story is great too, nice to see intrigue going on off the battlefield...
  8. Nice build LordDan, and loving the story. The concept of the jester as an assassin is really clever - holding the murder weapon right in front of the victim! Just in case guerilla builds need approved - here's my
  9. Lovely work Mike S. You already have two upvotes, but I'll add mine anyway: Those Leander troops are wicked! Nice use of dark tan and brown on the river bank. The tree is a clever design although it does look a bit sparse.
  10. Brickset usually has a list of the different prices in the largest markets on the right-hand side (RRP as well as current prices). For the Slave 1 75060, it's listed as £169.99 / $199.99 / 199.99EUR. The latest rates from XE.com show that £169.99 buys $258.93 and 199.99EUR buys $220.80. So, using USD as a standard in descending order: UK = $258.93 (most expensive) Europe = $220.80 USA = $199.99 (least expensive) Although, if I recall directly, the US price does not include local sales tax which varies from state to state (perhaps a local can confirm?). I can't speak for Europe, but the UK price includes 20% VAT. Ultimately what drives the price is what Lego can get away with in the local market conditions, not what is "fair" between markets.
  11. I have read through the image posting tutorials and I understand how to post appropriately sized images from Flickr or another image hosting site where I have control of the uploads. However, I have recently been trying to post images linked from other sites where I do not have upload control - i.e. Lego catalogue scans, etc. Sometimes these images exceed the sensible image guidelines (circa 800 x 600), but due to copyright issues, I'm a bit cagey about reposting them to my own Flickr stream. I did a Google search on how to resize images using BBCode, and found this tutorial. I've tried the following code: and with images but neither of these were successful. Can someone please tell me if it is possible to use code like this on EB and what the correct syntax is? If it is not possible what is a good way to link these images without posting the huge originals (and potentially being in breach of the agreed image etiquette)? I apologise in advance if this is covered elsewhere and I missed it
  12. Fair point. I guess if timber was used to prevent is collapsing then right-angles make sense. It just stood out to me...but maybe I need to read the descriptions better!
  13. I mentioned to SkaForHire on Flickr, but in my enforced Lego absence, I've been playing a lot of a game called Endless Legend. One of the factions is called the "Roving Clans", and it would fit perfectly into the Kalpihlin style. A Google image search for "endless legend roving clans" will get you lots of nice images, and a couple are included below to give you an idea. Hope this might help those lacking inspiration!
  14. FYI SkaForHire and Bregir: I cannot build for these challenges, but they are so awesome it's got me posting again! I plan to make myself useful, and as a shield-holder, thumbs-up as many builds as I feel are appropriate. I've started this process and will continue this in the coming weeks. Look forward to everyone's entries!
  15. Good work mccoyed. A well-written story and it's good to hear of goings on outside of Kaliphlin, showing that life in Historica goes on regardless of the recent turmoil. The baby in the fur cap is very clever. Looking forward to more of this story!
  16. Nice intro Goliath! Good choice in supporting Ulandus, the Emir approves of your choice! Looking forward to your contributions.
  17. Nice work Gideon. You've done well to keep it interesting in what is a difficult base requirement (16 x 16). The palm tree is a nice design. I am happy to this as part of the "Approvals" section of the rules. One suggestion might be to make the water section angled rather than with right angled sides to make it look more natural.
  18. Nice little scene mccoyed! Your water wheel is solid and I like the irregular base choice. I am happy to this for the challenge (as per the "Approvals" section of the rules).
  19. Experimentation is the best way to develop your building skills. Take small sections and try and recreate them with as many different techniques as possible. Then you can see which look the best, use the fewest parts and are the most structurally sound. It's worth mentioning that complexity for the sake of complexity is self-defeating - usually the simplest solution is the best.
  20. Brilliant resource Rogue Angel! I grew up in the classic era, but for me the Dragon Knights hold the most nostalgia. The 1993 catalogue (see image below), with all those sets, is still one of my favourite images to this day. As gylman points out, this is based more on fond memories than actual set quality, but still, Dragon Knights hold a special place in my heart.
  21. Lovely studs out construction, and love the gold roof. Very intimidating feel!
  22. I'm just loving this story. 20 mini-stories to introduce the challenge, you are too generous Sir. The writing is brilliant too, I really feel like I'm getting to know the characters. Hopefully Kaliphlin will come out stronger after these sad events. One thing: teleportation seems rather overpowered if whole armies can be transported!
  23. I think you can use your imagination within limits. There are three sides to the conflict, the High Council, the Desert King and Ulandus. The High Council, being made up of the various High Lords, will have the most varied army, and really has little restriction. The Desert King is a kind of Egyptian mummy reincarnated, so mummies will make up the bulk of his army. Ulandus is a sort of lost city with legions, so think more repetitive troops, with uniforms. I think SkaForHire was thinking of the Lost City of Atlantis, so think Roman/Greek influences. Some images can be found at the bottom of the rules thread. In the latter two cases, various High Lords have chosen to oppose the council and throw in their lot with the Desert King or Ulandus, so really the world's your oyster! You can check who has sided with whom in the Challenge IV thread. As this first challenge involves spies and scouts, you have even more leeway because spies will naturally dress themselves like the enemy to blend in. So in summary: stop worrying about the aesthetics and get building! If you can justify it logically, no-one will complain. SkaForHire can correct me if this is wrong.
  24. The Emir of Gorr rules Stone Town at the North of the island. Unfortunately, he cannot participate in this war, but he hopes he can offer moral support. Wahil is still advising him, but cannot force him to war. I don't have any ideas at this stage, but I'm hoping to be more active and help to approve any entries which require to have their build quality verified as per the challenge rules. You've all done a great job with this challenge, and it's shaping up to be the best yet! Thanks Maxim. I've been watching your Mypa Stedor builds with some interest, I'm hoping that soon I'll have a bit more Lego space and can keep up big builds like that for a prolonged period. Even though you are supporting the High Council ( ), I'm sure we still want the best for Kaliphlin! Don't worry, Gorr isn't gone forever, just maybe until 2016.
  25. Nice story! Love the floating ice in the river and hall design.
