LEGO Star Wars 2017 Pictures and Rumors
rollermonkey replied to Stash2Sixx's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Hindsight is 20/20... Someone should have made a UCS Falcon rumors, speculation, wishlist and blather thread a long, long time ago, then the mods could just move all the pointless discussion of it far, far away. -
Broken poll is still broken? I think it's just an average set, and frankly I got it for two reasons: 1. I'm a completist. 2. I wanted the orange crate so that my hover tank has two.

I'm not even from the UK, and I knew the front end looked off. :/

Well, hopefully the July calendar with have a mention. I'm not holding my breath for VIP advanced sales, though.

Any updates on the Arc d' Triomphe set, or has something happened to it?

21309 NASA Apollo Saturn V (LEGO Ideas)
rollermonkey replied to Blondie-Wan's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I'm building this with my daughter. Since everything is symmetrical, it's a nice build to share with someone, and it minimizes the repetitiveness. We just finished stage I today. It's a really nice build so far. -
...and don't lubricate your LEGOs, most lubricants are pretty bad for the plastic.

Review LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader Transformation 75183

I think LEGO 's penchant for using ever more and smaller pieces is starting to effect stability. This set's base is all kinds of wobbly.- 5 replies

Review | LEGO 75178 Star Wars ● JAKKU QUADJUMPER
rollermonkey replied to Brick Ministry's topic in LEGO Star Wars
The build is a little repetitive, since the ship is little more than 4 engines, but I really like how it looks. I think the most interesting thing about it is the way that the destruct button is deactivated when it isn't on the ground. This makes it far more swooshable for kids. Nice thinking on the part of the designer. -

Frankly, nothing in the Minecraft line has ever looked like an exciting build to me. Parts packs.

Technic 2017 Set Discussion
rollermonkey replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm completely baffled why anyone, not just you, find it fair to compare prices of sets sold 7 years apart. If you don't like the set, fine, but using false equivalence to justify that opinion is unfair. I don't like the tow truck because I think it's ugly, but since it's LEGO, I'll build it once to see if I learn something, and disassemble it for the parts. -
LEGO Star Wars 2017 Pictures and Rumors

The Quadjumper looks good, but the picture on the back showing Rey and Finn in the cockpit seems a bit of a stretch... and 200 Euro seems WAY too expensivefor it to end up being popular. -
Virtually everything I wanted was sold out by the time I could get to the LEGO store, so I ended up getting 75148 and 75169 instead. The big surprise was seeing the sale prices effecting some of the newest sets, like the Y-wing. For that reason, I ordered that, battle on Scarff and a second carbon freezing scene from the website. (Those there were the ones I'd wanted to get at the store)
-
Unsurprisingly, my local store sold out in 20 minutes. I'll get this later when supply and demand stabilizes enough to not need to skip work to buy it.

When I got the e-mail announcing the new animal carousel, I finally broke down and bought 10247, as I'm sure it will retire soon. I just need to attach the gondolas to be done building, but I'm really conflicted/unhappy about the set. The plate-built, H-shaped base seems like a compromise. It's sturdy enough. (The completed model is as a whole, but more on that in a second.) It's like they couldn't quite get the build to work on a 48x48 baseplate, and went with plates as a fall back instead of trying to come up with another design that fit. I thought the build was fairly normal through bags 1 and 2, but the build for bags 3 has to be one of, if not the most completely annoying experiences that I've ever had in LEGO. Before the two sides of the wheel are connected, and for several steps before, the partially completed wheel is frustratingly flimsy. There's a tension in the frame that makes me wonder: if there's not an illegal connection in there, then the geometry of the black spoked-plates at the center of the wheel (#4539442) isn't correct. The single-stud connection between it and the spokes kept popping off repeatedly while I worked. When I was done with (sub)step 13 of building the wheel sides, there is a small, but noticeable flexing of the structure from the tension in the frame. This tension makes the whole disc-shape of the frame curve slightly, making them concave towards each other when done. Connecting the two sides together at nine points simultaneously in step 19 is also frustrating, to say the least, with those single-stud connections coming loose repeatedly during the process. Then, in step 20, you are actually required to bend the structure to fit in the remaining twelve 8L axles that complete the connections between the sides. Sure it's a small bend of 'only' 2L, spread over many connected bricks, but I was surprised that it passed LEGO's QA checking process. Once all of the connections between the two sides have been made, and the spokes have been reconnected to the center, the tension in the two sides balance each other, and the complete structure is very stable. I really think that the combination of connections in the wheel results in a constant tension that would normally be considered an illegal connection. The instability in that portion of the build is also a huge detractor for me. As such, I've voted 'below average' for this set.

This just reminded me that the last time I went to Singapore, the only thing from this that existed was the Merlion. ? Then again, the first time I went to Singapore, the amusement park on Sentosa was Adventure Asia, not Universal Studios! Great looking model, definitely put it on Ideas. I'd vote for it! ...and maybe if I'm lucky, someday I'll get to go back and see this part of Singapore in person.

I really like this set. I didn't have any problems attaching the higher level curves. I'm not sure what people could be doing wrong to have trouble with that part?- 11 replies

Technic 2017 Set Discussion
rollermonkey replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That 42069 set is kind of huge. It's using the Porsche fenders, in purple, and the step-rail is a 3X11 panel. Those jerricans on the roof are 4.67 bricks tall. 22 studs tall to the top of the luggage rack, and roughly 53 studs and maybe 25 studs wide long by my 'count'. Knob behind the passenger door operates the winch. Real question is does the shifter in the cabin do anything, or is it just for looks? -
I got two of this, and built the second one mirrored to the instructions. At some point, I'll join the two at the bar and see how it works out.
