Technic 2019 Set Discussion
Seasider replied to dimaks13's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
A new tv series started in the uk last night called “mission ignition” where 2 teams have to race to reassemble a classic car that’s been taken partially apart. It’s on mid way through the evening (8pm) and interestingly it’s sponsored by Lego Technic and this week it had the Porsche RSR being shown in stages at each advert break. So aimed at late teens and adults who are into cars with that time slot and programme association. -
This is like a lot of the larger scale or 1:1 models TLG often builds. Remember there is a Speed Champions version of the Senna our at the moment so this is most probably just a marketing tie in to that. I wouldn’t take this as sign of the next Technic UCS car, especially as they’re normally done with Technic teasers.

My Dad used to work for New Holland. Love the Tractor and Bailer combo although I'm sure my Dad would complain you haven't made a New Holland Bailer to go with it. Is any of this custom parts ? I might have to build the tractor now that I have an Sbrick too

Thanks for a great review. You said about making the Original Mini in a different colour to provide a contrast, but it's a model of a very specific Mini. No 177 which won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1967 which also explains the snow in the pictures. I do really want the original mini but just don't like the Dakar buggy

Technic 2019 Set Discussion
Seasider replied to dimaks13's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
As I said earlier the main car show towards the end of the year for launches is Frankfurt in September. So if we are getting a new licenced car I'd look to launches then. My comment about the Defender replacement is based around all the spy shots so far have been of a single variant in terms of wheelbase and body style. When you have multiple bodystyles of a single vehicle you often stagger their releases so it makes it a lot easier for ironing out the errors in initial production build, trust me I know a bit on this topic :) I'll be looking forward to whatever it is -

I’d be surprised if the next Defender comes in multiple wheelbases, at least to start with. -

1973 too here :) and I’ve got a few of the 1980 sets but I’m not sure when my parents bought them new for me. -

I think the Landy could be a tie in to the new Defender. Frankfurt motorshow is September and that’s classed as one of the “big ones” in the industry for car launches. So that would then tie in with an October model https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-land-rover-defender-2019 -
Generic Contest Discussion
Seasider replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
We've had Transforming models already withe M.A.S.K. series. I'm up for a small build competition, I do like the idea of the small car to go on the forthcoming Transporter but as someone has pointed out that's worth waiting for more wheelarch colours to be available. I'd still like a "great egg race" type challenge where the challenge is to solve an engineering problem more than build a <insert vehicle type> -

[PRESS RELEASE] 10265 - Ford Mustang Creator Expert
Seasider replied to Ecclesiastes's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I’m liking this set, I’ve got all the Creator car series except the original studded Beetle (before my time of collecting these) and last years Aston which just doesn’t look right from too many angles. But this mustang works at some many levels. As someone said it’s definitely up a level in terms of creator cars. Not sure about the mods myself, the engine looks good, but I do with the duck tail spoiler didn’t need the black discs on the rear/bottom face -
4:10 6:6 13:4 3:3 10:2 1:1 Great Entries everyone, I voted for stuff I liked in terms of the challenge it presented, the functions it gave, the general look or all combined. I still wonder if I should have tried another way to get my Contra-Prop model to my liking ,,, another project to think about ! I'll just hope TC16 is less frustrating for me.

Creator Expert Cars - Rumors, Discussion, and Speculation

Sorry to ask this if it's already known but as we're now seeing reviews do we know when this is available in the UK? Is it 1st March ? -
@TimeCruiser to answer a few of your questions. You can’t just put the crank handle on the other side as it would foul with a tan Bevel gear that’s placed horizontally. only some of the skins are one sided. The tail, dorsal and (I think) pelvic fins are doubled sided, strangely the forward pectoral fins aren’t which is odd to me. The head and 3 skins that make up the body only need to be single sided as they wrap over the top of the model nd are pinned underneath. no the extra skin packs and as “envelope” type packs and they all came delivered in a plain brown delivery box. As to the part count I wonder if someone in the US can confirm if the box is the same. I think for such a low volume it will be, and perhaps the video was showing a premilinary box and they removed the part count for the actual. Again a step to make it not look like traditional Lego. Part count is 293 if you sum up the parts list at the back of the manual, assuming it’s correct. Interestingly the skins are counted as 2 parts (there are 2 sheets) and not the 10 individual parts they end up being when you push them out of the sheet. So the 294 from the early video must have either had someone who couldn’t count or they removed an unnecessary part from the model. the new pins are only used for holding the skins on. The 31 pins in the parts list only get used 30 times, so it officially contains a spare not sure why? I looked at the original video and when it shows the skins all on a table you can see the Koi only has 30 holes. As to the Shark, I haven’t built it yet but checking the instructions I can see that the head part does indeed double up holes on the pins to get the shape. But it still only has 30 holes as it doesn’t have pins on the top and bottom of the head piece like the Koi. The red pins must have been prototypes. You definitely wouldn’t want them in red on the final model. To remove the skins from them you need to ideally take the skins with pins off the model, this then allows you to get flexibility in the skin to pry them off. The holes are sort of triangular and having just tested it pretty tight around the pins so you need to be careful to not damage them. as to why you get pins with the skin packs. Perhaps so that once you’ve put the pins on the skin you just leave them there even when you take the skin off. Putting the pins in the skin holes can be fiddly. Also it could be a production volume issue as you say. I’ve put on hold my plan to turn this into something else. Too many other Lego builds in progress. Sorry.

If you want Technic only working paddle shifters I’d check the Porsche GT3RS or Chiron MOD threads for ideas

If you do use some of his construction techniques in your final model I'd reference/thank him in your final post as he's a well known and respected builder.

If you're looking at building a scaled model of an single seat open wheeled car then you need to look at Roscopc's F1 collection. http://www.roscopc.it/ I've built a couple of these and the suspension is accurately modelled for this scale.

@Ron Dayes - if I get a chance over the next couple of weeks I may give it a go. My plan would be to print out on thin paper and work out my shapes. Test that they look ok, the 2 central ones are pretty much defined by the motion. Then transfer to card I think. But I’ll need to get some card and colouring pens/pencils and also some Lego parts for what I’d like to show. So please give me some time
-
@Ron Dayes - in terms of creativity you mentioned. The "Ink Koi Skin" 81003 is for you to colour in to your hearts desire and better than that through people asking about it Lego did provide templates via email so if you want you can print these out on Paper, or card, or whatever you can print on and make something totally different. I think you could quite easily with this make a Lizard or a Dragon if you wanted too!
-
@deraven - have you got a Forma set? The reason why I ask is you do precisely what you say above. The first few stages you build the base and it’s gear mechanism. Then you build in stages the substructure of the koi and then join them together. Then you join the substructure to the base and to do this you have to get the alignment right or the mechanism doesn’t work. Once you’ve done this you can crank that handle to your hearts delight and appreciate Technic in motion. And then the Final Steps are to “drop the skins on” as you put it. So by that Lego have done precisely what you described. And actually if you think about it the skins have to go on last so you can handle it for assembly as they’re flexible. I also think a brick built “skin” to the model would have been too traditional Lego and still look like a Lego model on display which would turn some of the target market off. This is meant to be Lego for non-Lego people that doesn’t look like Lego. A brick built skin would undoubtedly look great to a lot of us, as someone has proved in the original Forma thread but I think it wasn’t the look they were after. I do actually hope this trial, which is obviously what it was, was deemed a success and will spawn more sets. The only question is how will Lego sell the product line going forward? If it’s aiming at new untapped markets selling them via their website or brand stores might not be the way forward. At least one thing this has sparked conversation :)
