  1. Welcome to Cable Foxley, Vitroleum, Bacon Potatoes (it makes me hungry every time I see that name), Milo Nelsiano, Ledi and Pyf! Quite a lot of activity out of you guys already - keep up the great work! Also a lot of builds from DeGothia, Bregir and Kerntechniker lately - Most impressive! A couple of excellent large layouts from Narbilu and Foxley (very much looking forward to where this one is headed) and quite a few WIP out there as well. Leki - I love the map, and I have adjusted the borders accordingly. Below is the updated map. I have also updated the map on the first page. Here are a couple of helpful guidelines for new members that I am restating for their reference. 1. Avalonian tasks (1-5 and any future tasks) can be completed at any time, and tasks 4 and 5 also count as freebuilds. You cannot complete multiple tasks with one build (although you can incorporate your other task builds into your task 3 entry as supplemental information. Tasks 1 and 2 should be posted in this thread (although a link to a separate topic is acceptable) and all other tasks should have their own topics. 2. You should be posting a link to any freebuild you post in this thread. (you can also add a picture if you like, or a picture as the link). 3. Anyone can claim land if they have a sigfig posted. Any other questions, just post them here. Keep up the great work Avalonians!
  2. What a disappointment! The only reason I was excited for this set was for Zuckus and 4-LOM. Not a single new character - just some re-arming and legging of Boba. Wow, I was ready to shell out $200 for those figs, and now it is a no-brainer pass.
  3. You'll run into the $10 minimum on a lot of Bricklink stores as well.
  4. Please note that I have clarified above: As a general rule, we typically ask that members post at most twice a day in the Guild threads (as in twice a day in the Kaliphlin Guild thread or twice a day in the Avalonia Guild thread. Feel free to post as much and as many times as you want in all other GoH threads i.e. MOC threads, Challenge threads, etc. you can post 100 times a day in all the combined GoH threads if you want.)
  5. Thanks for the amazing review Whitefang! The new cape for the Hun warrior and the new hairpieces for the genie and dino hunter are excellent! As always, I love your detailed analysis and your side by side comparsions. Thanks!
  6. As a general rule, we typically ask that members post at most twice a day in the Guild threads (as in twice a day in the Kaliphlin Guild thread or twice a day in the Avalonia Guild thread. Feel free to post as much as you want in all other GoH threads i.e. MOC threads, Challenge threads, etc. you can post 100 times a day in all the combined GoH threads if you want.) The majority of the members here visit every few days to every week or two. They tend to check out the guild threads to see what's been going on. The more activity there is in a thread, the more likely people are to just skim it instead of reading every post. They are also less likely to respond to a conversation that was going on a few pages back. So, when there are an excessive number of posts, the posts don't get read and new conversations don't continue. This tends to be a deterrant for members, and they tend to not post as much, or just skip that thread all together. For people like myself, I will usually only have 5 minutes to flip through a thread, so if there has been multiple pages since I last checked, I will just wait until the next time I'm on, and this will stack up until I get an extended period of time to read.
  7. Hulk_smash has been right before. I believe him.
  8. I'm surprised that there has been no discussion about the new advent calendar. I have always felt these were a waste of money for AFOLs until this year. It comes with a whopping 9 figures! This includes a good assortment of generic figures (sadly no stormtrooper or rebel trooper) Rieekan, Luke and Santa Vader and a festive astromech. Plus, the set comes with a helmet for the clone trooper as well, and there are some nice mini-builds.
  9. There are two types of werewolves - lycanthropes and purebloods. Lycanthropes are sometimes human, sometimes werewolf, while purebloods were born werewolves. There are rumors that some purebloods can change to human form at will. Some say that purebloods came first, and spread lycanthropy through their bite, while others say the first pureblood was born of lycanthropic parents. Werewolves are not undead though they are said to live longer than a human's lifespan.
  10. I used to live in Portland, Oregon where you real feel the effects of a mountain range off the coast. It rained 2 out of every 3 days and the climate coastward of the mountains was temperate rainforest, while landward it was arid and dry - kind of like Kaliphlin. Now I live in Wisconsin, similar to Southern Mitgardia/ Northern Avalonia. Haven't lived in any swamps or mazes yet though.
  11. The foothills on the northern side of Avalonia have snow cover for a good portion of the year, and there are a few snow covered peaks in the mystic isles. There is not anything in the south of Avalonia at this point for snow, as there are no real mountains or peaks. In regards to religion for Historica in general, there is no uniform religion nor even a dominant religion. Historicans worship deities and nature aspects and mortal/undead beings and many other things depending on where you go. There are a number of widespread faiths that have spread to multiple guilds, but again, no dominant ones that account for more than a fraction of any guild. Many individual territories have established pantheons, but it is common for this to be confined to only the local regions. There is also a large number of Historicans who do not worship at all.
  12. 2014. And I'm guessing that with the Hunger Games CMF hairpiece, it may come with...Bespin Leia? Which would be a huge dissapointment
  13. The frontpage post that directed me here said "do these appeal to you or more to Minecraft fans? Discuss" which is why I'm here. I am not a Minecraft fan, but all lego sets can have some potential value. Friends, TMNT, Chima, Galaxy Squad even, have all introduced new pieces or figures that are useful outside their lines, but just like the micro Minecraft sets, minifig scale sets hold no appeal for me. There are no new pieces of any value. If the tools wouldn't have been so detailed, if they would have made one single new plant vegetable or fruit for the "farm", these sets could have had some value, but as it is, these will again be sets I just gloss over.
  14. There seems to be a whole lot of unfounded expectations about having Whitefang's review up already. I'm guessing that, if he had the figures in his hands (kind of a critical component to doing a comprehensive review, don't you think?) He would probably review them. Lego is kind enough to provide the figures early, and Whitefang is kind enough to devote the significant amount of time required to do his reviews, so I for one will be happy with it whenever it comes.
  15. Jakorin Swiftsword - Welcome to Avalonia! Some great techniques with your sigfig build, and I look forward to seeing your MOCs. CesBrick- I believe you have the 1st Task 5 Entry, and it is a thing of beauty! As others have said, that is a fantastic first MOC for GoH. Jason - Great to see you Armies and Retinue - I love your commanders! Great to have you back! Mephistopheles - Another great re-entry to Avalonia. Excellent work! I can you only hope you'll be getting back into your building rhythm again! CHALLENGE II Great work Avalonians! DeGothia and Bregir were on DeGothia's winning team, while Odidoma, Narbilu, Wedge, Hammerhand, Carson and Krono fought off the Drow, but at what cost? We shall soon see... Bregir has won the title of "Gatekeeper of the East" for his working in stopping the spread of the plague to Nocturnus. GUILD THREAD UPDATE I have updated the first post of this thread and there are a few titles that have been awarded for the work completed so far in Book II As Lord Varis has not been heard from since his descent into the depths, Lord DeGothia and Lord Simon have officially taken on the roles of Lords Regent of Avalonia. Narbilu and Wedge09 have been promoted to the Defenders of the Realm for their vigilant and consistent efforts to safeguard the borders of Avalonia (both in Challenges I and II, and in their many other builds) Mpoh98 has been decided as the winner of the Prologue builds for Chapter II. He has also been appointed Avalonia's Shadow Master and shall be leading the reconnaissance and intelligence efforts for the Realm. Congratulations to all of you!
  16. You should have one thread that contains your stories and concept ideas. (DaMaximus has one thread for his City, I believe Gedren has 1 thread for his Nestlands storyline... maybe?) Once you get pictures of your finished MOCs, you can start a new thread for each MOC.
  17. Feel free to make a thread that display your stories and ideas. You can add as many posts as you'd like, and you can go back and edit your post afterwards. Ska is the Guild leader for Kaliphlin, so his word is law in this thread as well. Each guild has different contests - Kaliphlin has the University challenge at present, which is far more comprehensive then the Avalonian mini-challenges have been.
  18. 1. First and foremost, this is a Lego building forum. Feel free to start a single thread where you post your own stories even if there is not a MOC, but you should not be posting stories in new threads or guild threads if you don't have a MOC to go with it. 2. Guild threads are meant for general discussion or links to your own topic threads. You should not be posting full stories or multiple pictures in these threads. There are some exceptions, such as Avalonia's mini-challenges, but these are the exception, not the rule.
  19. Let's just say that the Mitgardians has been waiting on me (just a couple of days) to start posting for Challenge III. I was intending to post the results on Monday but work got in the way.
  20. In the past months, Avalonia has suffered through many trials. The incursions by the Drow were just the beginning of the Avalonian woes. With the emergence of the mysterious deaths in the islands near the Kaliphlin border, Avalonians were forced to decide between going on the offensive against a possible Drow invasion or going on the defensive against a possible plague. Many Avalonians played it safe at first by building up their defenses against the threat of the Drow. Fortifications and walls started spring up all over the countryside, and some Avalonians were selfless enough to assist their neighbors before heading off to battle. As time passed, it became apparent that there was truly a plague spreading over southwestern Avalonia. The plague spread quickly, and many Lords were forced to cut off their main trade routes to keep the plague from spreading into their lands. The sick started flooding in to every physician, medic or herbalist, who were soon overwhelmed. No one seemed to know of a cure, and the healers did not know how they could keep up with the constant influx of new patients The Drow had constructed major fortifications all over Avalonia, but they still had not staged any major assaults. Many Avalonians had been preparing for an imminent invasion, but as time passed, they started to reconnoiter the Drow outposts in hopes of determining their forces and strategies. Other Avalonians tried... "alternate methods", going so far as to meet with the treacherous Drow in hopes of gaining an advantage. As the saying goes, "Desperate times call for desperate measures." Some of the Drow must have been getting restless as well, because in some cases, they were just as foolish as the desperate Avalonians, attempting to use guile and trickery to hoodwink Avalonians, but this ended badly for the Drow. Meanwhile, the Plague continued to spread across Avalonia. Many of the realms were focused on war instead of medicine, and the plague spread like wildfire through these lands and beyond, quickly reaching some of the most isolated of places. Those who contracted the plague would become deathly ill, and those that those without care usually perished quickly. Even those who were ministered to by the most proficient of healers often succumbed to this pox. As the Avalonians to the north completed their defenses, they begin to mass troops to assault the Drow. As each day passed, the Drow did not attack and the Avalonians grew more confident. The Drow were still sending out small raiding parties, but these preyed mainly on small groups of travelers, of which there were few enough. Avalonians soon began to actively seek out these raiding parties, and the Avalonians usually triumphed, sending the Drow scurrying back to their lines. It became apparent to many of the Southern Avalonian Lords that the plague was far worse of a threat than the Drow but the Northern Lords could not be convinced. The Northern Lords bent their minds to warfare, instead of quarantines and medicines, although there were still a few havens in this area for plague victims. It was at one of the ancient shrines deep in the Avalonian forests that a cure was finally discovered. The healers at the shrine, whose knowledge that had been passes down through generations, utilized the rare and potent herbs of the forest to create the cure. At the same time the cure was discovered, a great concerted assault was launched against the Drow. The Avalonians were able to easily defeat the Drow foot soldiers, who were not supported with bowmen or mages, and put up a meager defense at best. For the most part, the Drow seemed to melt away under the attacks, and the Avalonians, while triumphant, were able to inflict no significant casualties tothe Drow themselves, only their minions. The only exception to this was the Battle of Skergat Pass, where the Drow suffered very heavy losses at the hands of the Avalonian heavy calvary. In the aftermath of the Avalonian offensive, it has become clear that the Drow did not have sufficient forces to mount a full scale offensive, or had already withdrawn the bulk of their troops. The Avalonian attacks had been primarily easy victories with little to no casualties. The northern Lords now need to consider how best to deal with the Plague that is ravaging their townsfolk and soldiers alike. The coastal villages are reporting more and more encounters with "ghost ships." These ships were originally just floating hulks, but it appears the dead crew and passengers are reviving as skeletons and zombies. The plague has hit all of Avalonia very hard, but does not appear to have spread to Kaliphlin, who provided much of the support for the healers and infirmaries. It is yet to be seen if Mitgardia is in danger, as the border between Avalonia and Mitgardia is sparsely populated on the Mitgardia side. While the past months have been very dark for Avalonia, there have still been a few families who have survived unscathed. It has been noted by some that the Elves concerned themselves primarily with the Drow, and some are even blaming Varis for the current circumstances. Varis and his rescue party have not been seen, but there have been sparse reports of a few captured Avalonians straggling back from the Drow tunnels. The Elves continue to safeguard against the Drow, viewing them as more of a threat. RESULTS This was very impressive Challenge, both in terms of the number of entries, and the quality of the builds. Team Simon had the most entries by far, but Team DeGothia had a coordinated storyline for their entries which provide a cohesvie narrative that wound throught the stories of their entries. Challenge A: Winning Team: Team Simon (Tean Simon had about twice the entries, with many high quality entries and easily won this category) Winning Entries: There was a 3-way tie between Gabe, Emma and Infernum, but Infernum was voted the overall winner for this category Honorable Mention: Mike S. Challenge B: Winning Team: Team DeGothia (Team DeGothia had some amazing builds in this category, along with the majority of their cooperative storyline, and handily won this category) Winning entries: Gabe was the winner, with Infernum and Torgar coming in second. Honorable Mention: Legopard and Gideon Challenge C: Winning Team: This one was close, but Team DeGothia edged it out with 3 high quality entries. Winning Entries: Kayne was the winner with Gideon coming in second. Honorable mention to Soccerkid. Thanks to Infernum, Gabe, Gideon, MKJosha and Narbilu, who submitted entries for all 3 categories. Great work guys! so Team DeGothia is the overall winner for Challenge II. This will have significant implications to Avalonia, and the results are reflected in the storyline in this post. The Winners of the Mirkwood Elf and Rivindell sets are Kayne (1st for DG) and Infernum (1st for Simon). Thanks for all of entries, and Challenge III will be posted imminently.
  21. The Hun is incredible! Hands down the star of this series. The helmet, the shield, the body, even the head... If he comes with a cape, that will be incredible. The Greek Warrior and the Spooky Girl are also excellent (I would rarely pick a non-historical figure, but the spooky girl is just superbly done.) The new shield, helmet and torso, along with another spear will make the Greek warrior a definite army builder. Merlin, the miner and the princes are all decent, but they all could have been done better. I kind-of like Merlin's new cap, I wish the princess's hat and hair were not a single piece, and I really wish they would have put more effort into the miner's outfit. Great to have the miner's hat and the Wiley beard in a new color though! The rocker and the space miner are very well done, and I will probably have to army build at least a handful of the space miner to get the space armor in the new color scheme. The pig, Katniss and the genie girl are fine. I'll pick up one of each. The swashbuckler is good only because of the Musketeer hat in brown and another rapier. I will be passing on the rest. This is a welcome relief after the huge delay since the last CMF series (I don't count the useless Simpson's series), and the best series since 9 and 10 IMO.
  22. If you participate in the Challenges, there will most likely be something similar at the end of Book 2
  23. Cesbrick -Welcome to Historical! You can choose a land to live in even if your sigfig is not the lord. You can enter Task 5 as long as it is a fortified building. A Fortified Inn or a farm compound would work, but you can't just enter a normal house. Odidoma - there is no time limit on the Tasks.
  24. True, you probably would have to quit your job to... wait, you'd think you'd need .. to work.. more? Anyways, this or this would provide the majority of the pieces you'd need for your fortress. Besides, the whole POINT is that these strongholds are supposed to be a show of force and power. That's half the reason castles were built in the first place.
