Book II - Avalonia: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Rogue Angel replied to Rogue Angel's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks all for the well wishes. The baby is doing well, but we got spoiled with our first one who was sleeping through the night at 2 weeks. We're lucky if baby 2 makes it 4 hours between feedings. Task 4 has been the most popular task so far, and so I wanted to introduce another global one. It is also working towards another concept I had long before, which this will probably lead into. Map on the first page is updated - please let me know if I missed your territory. -
The same for all the Avalonian tasks - recognition. No prizes. The intent of the tasks is to flesh out your realms.

Book II - Avalonia: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Rogue Angel replied to Rogue Angel's topic in Guilds of Historica
Hello all, sorry for my absence. I just had my 2nd child, and I have been very busy at work for the past few months, not to mention post-BrickWorld sorting. I've been checking in, but haven't had time to update things until now. I've updated the 1st post, and there are two new Tasks below. Welcome Back Mpoh, Vitroleum and Simon (soon). Welcome to all of our new members! Great job on Challenge 4 Avalonia! It was a very impressive turnout all around. Challenge V is in the works, and you should be seeing more on that before too long. I still need to get the HSS thread updated as well as the map. You should be seeing those updates in the next couple of days. SIXTH TASK - Open to all Historicans Merchants ply their wares throughout Historica, bringing Avalonian wines to Nocturnus and Kaliphlin spices to Mitgardia. But some brewers are renowned for their finest stouts or lagers, certain Kalihplin oil magnates that are known to provide reliable cheap lamp oil, there are prized meats that can only be purchased from specific breeders. These are the goods that are known throughout Historica by name. What are these goods, and who provides them? For the sixth task, you need to establish a brand of trade. This "brand" could be the maker/sewer/brewer/carver/grower of goods, it could be a specific region (this should be very specific to a location or small region, not "Nocturnus Cake" or even "Mystic Isles Pizza") or it could be more of a large trade conglomerate that provides a multitude of goods, or has stores throughout Historica. Some of these "brands" are already established in previous MOCs or posts, and some have not yet been established. To find out all of the details, check out this page: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=113968 SEVENTH TASK Avalonians, we know much about your Lords and Ladies, but how do the common folk live? Do your commoners live in squallor, or do they have the bare essentials for a decent life? The common folk are the life blood of each territory, and their individual failures and successes intermingle to determine the success of Avalonia as a whole. For the seventh task, you should provide a picture into the life of your peasants. You MUST include a finished interior build of their residence. It is OK to include the exterior as well, but an interior build must be included. Entries for this task should be posted in their own topic and a link should be posted in this thread. -
TASK 6 - TRADES OF HISTORICA Merchants ply their wares throughout Historica, bringing Avalonian wines to Nocturnus and Kaliphlin spices to Mitgardia. To establish your trade, you must post MOCs depicting this trade in action. These MOCs CAN be already completed, but they MUST have referenced the trade BY NAME at the time. (Their are very few of these to my knowledge). (if you try to alter a description of an existing MOC to fit this challenge, you will not be allowed to enter ANY trades, so do not edit topics you already posted. you can add a post later on in your topic, but if I see that the topic was already posted before Aug 27th, but edited after Aug 28th, it will not be allowed as part of this challenge.) This Task is a bit different than previous tasks, in that the most popular entries will become the most renowned (This may come in to play in a later task/Challenge) Some general guidelines and considerations - You can enter as many MOCs for a Trade as you want, but there should be one overall topic for that Trade, which then shows all of the related MOCs (or at lest links to them. - Your trade topic should be titled "TRADE - XXXXXXXXXXX" (ex: TRADE - Valyrian Sea bubbles) - You may want to consider aspects of your trade outside the builds (Logo, Jingle, inegration of celebrities, etc.) - Trades are organized by Type. Examples of types would be beverages, breads and pastries, Sewing and weaving, etc. but it will depend somewhat on the trades that are entered. (I will be determining the final categories for voting). - You may be in direct competition with other Trades (If there are 3 breweries entered, only 1 will be the best, and people may only be able to vote for 1 trade in the beverage category) - Trades are less competetive when they are not nearby (A brewer in Avalonia does not have a lot of competirion with a brewer in Nocturnus, although there is some.) - Trades with very little market, or little influence will have less weight overall, so while it may be nice to have no competition with your Queens Crossing Crocodile Tooth Magnets, if nobody wants them anyways, it doesn't matter. This will also help with categories that may have a lot of favorites, such as ales or ships, where tastes and needs may vary. (Again, I will be determining weight of a Trade, if necessary) - You can have more than one Trade if you wish. For this task, there is no time limit, and again, it is open to all Historicans. There may be voting done though at the end of the year, based off the entries to that point. You should only have one post in this thread per Trade. Feel free to ask questions, but I will delete them once they have been answered, and compile the answers in the thread below. You cannot post for a trade without an initial build (I will delete any topics that do not contain a link to an existing MOC (no MOCs in progress allowed either)) Let me know if you have any questions. This is a work in progress, so it will evolve as we go forward. BTW - feel free to post general comments under here for the first week or so, at which point I will delete them.

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 14 Rumors and Discussion
Rogue Angel replied to Robert8's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Disappointing non-traditional series....again. There are a whopping 6 figures that are decent, IMO, and those are all "I suppose I could use that" not "I really want that!!!!" Werewolf would be great if it hadn't already come out in MF. A different color is useful, and a tail is OK. Tiger girl and Fly are cool concepts, but they are mostly display figures like the Animal/costume figs, useful only in narrow scope figure specific builds. Witch would be better if it weren't purple and yet another rehash. I much prefer the S2 witch, with the new hat being the only improvement...but it's in purple. Spectre is decent for the hair and torso, but limited with the Ninjago base instead of legs. This is really a parts fig. Gargoyle is the best figure of the series with the horned headpiece and the detailed face, but I HATE the stupid stubby wings that serve no purpose. If he would have had full wings, this would have been far superior. The Gargoyle at least some limited army builder potential. The zombies add some nice variety to the zombie forces, but that doesn't do me much good. The rest of the figs are not very useful either. A few decent parts, but that's about it. Every series to this point other than than Simpson's has always had one to three "Wow, that's awesome!" Figs, while this series has a handful of mediocre limited use-figs, and that's about it. I admit that they've done a decent job on the figs they've chosen, and These are probably just as appealing to the pure collectors here, but as a MOC builder, this series is a huge disappointment. -
You should really go at least once if you can. The first time is the most impressive, by far.

I am very envious of your 80 hours. With a toddler I am lucky to get 10 hours a week now. I only have about 40-50 hours of building left, so I'm in a better position.....maybe? -

Jakorin, The Drow Challenge is not open, but you can still build for it as a freebuild if you'd like. Windusky, just quote a post with a picture already included and you will be able to see the text/code you use, but it is typically (img)website or picture address(/img) but replace () with [] (img)httx://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/rogueang/Avalonia/avalonian_troops_lr.jpg(/img) -
Brickworld Chicago Countdown and Events Thread.
Rogue Angel replied to DaleDVM's topic in Brickworld
We aren't cool kids over at the Collab - there was supposed to be a front paging for the collab a couple months ago that never happened. We are building a Spaceport/asteroid belt type of thing, so any ships, buildings, scenes are welcome. Just PM me if you're interested. Dale, I'm surprised you own anything besides Castle. -

I am much farther than I usually am a month out, but I still have a ton of stuff to build. I usually end up with 2 or 3 builds that don't make it to BW because I can't get to finishing them. This year will likely be the same. Vincent - sorry you can't make it this year. Next year? -
you can go ahead and pick out whatever colorful historic pieces you want, but I don't build the Kremlin, or 1800's European architecture, or the selected pictures you show. I build castles, revolutionary forts and settlements, medieval villages, western towns, and the bottom half of my colors are all outside the greys and browns. You'll note that I said I didn't like the look of basic red, yellow and blue, not that they weren't used.
-
I have to disagree. I am also a builder that likes to stay true to what would have been done historically. If you want to build pink or purple or trans&clear castles, go for it, but I need to be able to justify my builds to myself. I tend to use: Light bley Dark bley Black Tan Dark tan Reddish brown White Sand green I will use the following colors for 'painted' builds Dark blue Dark red Dark green Earth orange Medium blue Sand blue Sand red Light yellow For some reason, basic red, blue and yellow do not look good to me in my historic builds, so I typically avoid those colors.

Fantastic Idea! I will have to enter if I get time.

Army building is more than just a show of a collection for some builders (although I think that is a major factor for some collectors). Army building often comes in to play once a decent collection is amassed. At this point, I can build better models than most of the sets that TLG puts out, but it's the figures that I need for scenes. If you don't build with a lot of figures, than army building has a lot less value. I try to base my fig collecting numbers off of what I would expect to need in a build. I typically pick up 10-30 for CMFs that are from new eras/races, while it's more in the 20-50 range for factions. I try to go for most every new historic faction/CMF, so I have to limit how much I buy, but some people that are focused (say Spartans or Romans) may want to invest that same amount of money in 100 or 200 of a specific couple of figs and then use those in big builds. It's all in what you want to use them for.

Counter to http://www.eurobrick...howtopic=107807 by Jacob Nion Kaliphlinites long ago mastered the ways of the desert. The slaves of old used it as their ally, their protection. They also discovered the ancient Powers that rested under the sands and in the deep caverns. They uncovered powerful artifacts and shrines that had been lost to time. A few of the most learned of the slaves were able to commune with these powers and forged alliance with them. They wielded great powers and were able to use these powers to protect their people against encroachers and the elements. It is thought that these bloodlines died off centuries ago, but as with many things, the truth has been lost with time. The seas have always been a threat to Kaliphlinites. The hurricanes that could decimate Cities, the tidal waves that could wipe out entire coastlines, Kaliphlin has always feared the sea. Yet there is a reason that there have been no deadly storms of days past, no waterspouts, no devestatating typhoons... People assume that it is just luck, but luck will only go so far. Long have the descendants of the slave priests watched over Kaliphlin, ever vigilant, ever mindful. When the great storms and clouds have gathered, they have called once again upon the ancient powers to protect them. To ward off the foul krakens and other beasts that once preyed on hapless mariners. Few know they exist, but few need to know. With this newest threat to the Kaliphlin coast, the Priests come again to the ancient shrines. They call upon the primal powers to send forth their magic to ward off the great beast. Bubbles of pure power ooze forth from the ground in glowing spheres, but they will spread out and encircle the lands of men, to ward off whatever beast or foul spirit may try to torment the sons and daughters of Kaliphlin. This will not be the last time, there will always be another hurricane, another beast, but the Ancient Powers are always ready, always willing to protect their people, their children of Kaliphlin.

The Build-a-Mini is a Gold mine now! Printed Armor, Seagulls, Viking Shields, Vladek/Troll helms, so much to choose from!
-
This is what has kept Chima and Ninjago from being good lines. Some of the figs were decent but the modern/futuristic vehicles were totally unappealing.
-
I would LOVE a Castle version of Chima with more animals with better Torsos, no zombified animals and new shields, but I doubt that would happen. I don't think Chima has done well at all.
-
The crest is what defines a faction though, and the dragon Torsos for the Dragon Masters fit in perfectly with the Black Knights. The thing about the Black Knights is that they were undefined other than their shields and helmets. They used generic armor prints that had no faction crest, and again, the helmets from the Black Knights fit the Dragon Lords perfectly. The crusaders have the blue shields and the yellow shields, but they only have one faction. I still say they are really just one faction, despite the Lego 'lore'. If anything, the Dragon Masters are a splinter faction of the Black Knights that were led by the Power-hungry renegade Majisto who used his control over the Dragons to maintain his power. I would still consider this one over-arcing faction though.
-
I agree that Knights were surely colorful but they would have had colorful tabards, not armor. You could say that the colored Armor piece could be acceptable, saying that this included the tabard, but then the torso and legs should be gray, not red/purple/green/light blue, etc. Upon rereading the catalogs, I see that the Black Knights and the Dragon Masters are technically separate factions, but they are really just the same faction with different colors. I used Dragon Masters as the faction name as it is more obvious as to who it refers to. I may rename them, but still have them connected in the flow chart. I was going through my figs this weekend, and was noticing how completely different the original Crusaders are from the Kingdoms Lions. I was looking primarily at the shields when I made this up, but I'm thinking I have to separate them out. I found my old mini catalogs and uploaded the pictures for reference.

Indeed, you need to post a picture in this thread, or no one will believe you.

Castle sets: Part-packs, fig-packs or both?
Rogue Angel replied to Artifex's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I buy very few Castle sets for the set itself. My primary consideration is the figures, but they are rarely good enough alone to justify the purchase, so the parts have to be considered as well. There have been some great sets lately that I could justify the purchase on figs alone: Castle Battlepack, MEA, Uruk Army, Galadriel\Elrond set. There are occasional sets that I feel are good enough to buy for the set itself (MMV, Mill Raid, Joust, Unexpected Gathering, Helm's Deep) but these are infrequent. I buy sets primarily on the figs included ( and weapons,Animals and Plants). I also own a ton of Lego, which makes the general pieces much less significant to me.
