  1. This was the only large set I had as a kid, and I loved it. Unfortunately, I parted most of my sets out to build MOCs, and this one was no exception. Someday I'll get the parts together and rebuild it permanently. It is a great set, and I've long hoped they'd do another in a similar fashion. I'm thankful that I had the great fortune of growing up in the 70's and 80's, when we had all these great LEGO Space themes. Thanks for the great review! Live long and prosper, Horatio-Caine!
  2. I have to echo the Fifth Element feel to the car. I got this a couple days ago, and I can't stop swooshing it. It's a fantastic design, reminiscent of a number of sci-fi movie vehicles and Syd Mead designs. I wish LEGO would do a whole theme of sets in this vein..Future City. Alas, I get the sense that the designers/movie creators were given quite a bit of freedom to create stuff for the movie that we would not otherwise see in regular LEGO themes. We can't have SWAT in City Police, but we can have Robo-SWAT, and Skeletron makes for a nice Terminator. Anyway, the sets that look best to me in this line are general y the Robo-Police sets and Benny's Spaceship.
  3. For me, an auto transport truck was the holy grail of trucks, so I'm very pleased that LEGO finally made one, and it's pretty decent. That said, I hope they see yours and are inspired to give us a larger version capable of handling 6-wide vehicles, with adjustable decking and longer ramps. Great job all around. BTW, I like your tire indents to keep the cars from rolling. Simple but effective, and nicer looking than fire ladders. :)
  4. I've been aware of your Transformer MOCs for years, and these certainly don't disappoint. I'm partial to your LEGO version, since you captured the VW look so well, and Bumblebee's G1 look perfectly. Both are great models. You have an amazing talent for packing a lot of detail and dynamics into a small space. Having only built a couple of the Kreo sets, I'm impressed not only with its similarity in feel and clutch power as LEGO, but also with some of their custom parts, especially their small ball-jointed parts. That said, I can't wait for LEGO to start releasing sets with their new small ball and socket joints this year (Mixels and Chima's Legend Beasts).
  5. Years ago, at the same time Avatar: The Last Airbender was airing, a lesser known anime called IGPX was playing featuring very cool stylized racing mecha. I'd love to see LEGO do something like that. Lots of possibilities, and Octan stickers galore. :) Aside from racing mecha, I'll chime in with my perennial wish that LEGO finally do a transforming mecha theme.
  6. Working within the limitations of the set, you've done a fine job with this. The amount of articulation you've achieved is impressive.
  7. Lovely build, and I agree that LEGO missed the boat by not including this as part of their Man of Steel sets. Great job, especially given the blurriness of the source photo.
  8. I subscribe to your theory. I'm guessing Mark Stafford, who started his Designer career on Exo-Force, and is generally responsible for most of the sets containing mecha. It's not much of a stretch in my mind to see Designers put references to other themes, even real people, i.e. NNENN, into newer sets. While I think EF and this new season of NinjaGo have some commonalities, I doubt there'll be a crossover. Personally, I'm still holding out hope that we'll get a transforming mech theme sometime in the future. Transformers are still incredibly popular due to the live action movies, cartoons new and old, and nostalgia fueled toylines like Masterpiece and Generations. I think a well done transforming theme would do well, esp if they can tie it to a show, games, and such.
  9. Welcome to our addiction, Brickmasta, and you've really come out in style. That is one purty viper.
  10. I was fortunate enough to see this unveiled in person by Jamie Berard himself this past weekend at BrickCon in Seattle, WA. I had a few minutes to look at the actual set, and it is truly lovely. If anyone is wondering, the reason Jamie wasn't as involved in the last two modular sets is that he was very busy designing the Sydney Opera House, which he also talked about at the Con. It was a great weekend, a fantastic Convention, and as a plus, we had a surprise visitor on Saturday: Mr. Al Pacino. I didn't get to speak to him, but he passed me on several occasions while he took the opportunity to look at everyone's stuff before the public hours began.
  11. Make that 5, although in retrospect, the boat was pretty well designed. Too bad it wasn't in the movie.
  12. Spot on! Great job!
  13. I'd be thrilled to see TLG figure a way to reintroduce those old blue and grey wedge shaped ships of yore. Those sets were, and remain, quite visually striking, which is why they've become iconic. It's lamentable that conflict in a box is now requisite, because a return to exploration would be a nice change, as well as presenting opportunities to the designers to make some non-combat related space vehicles. Beyond that, there's nothing that says they'd have to stay tied to any particular color scheme. One need only Google "LEGO starships" and marvel at the variety of space MOCs out there...most notably NNENN's incredible Flickr photostream. Anyway, along with Classic Space, I also voted for Blacktron, Futuron, and UFO. There was much to love about both waves of Blacktron, and Futuron popped with those white vehicle/trans blue cockpits. Futuron had a nice clean look to them that really appealed to me, not to mention I liked the vehicle designs themselves. Lastly, I've never had the sense that the UFO theme was that popular; however, it definitely struck a chord with me. To this day, the alien figs are some of my all-time favorites due to the unique and complex printing, as well as those awesome helmets. The theme had a variety of ship designs while maintaining the overall lenticular look. The Alien Avenger set was packed with features and exemplified the theme. It's still one of my favorite sets. Before pics of the Alien Conquest Mothership were revealed, I had hoped that it would be heavily influenced by the Alien Avenger. I was a little disappointed. Anyway, those are my picks for a Space revival, although I'd be happy to see any of the old Space themes homaged in a modern set.
  14. I second Aanchir's comment that the conversion design is excellent. I just bought this set yesterday, on impulse, after looking at the box in the store and realizing that it converted. I'd seen the set on various sites, but never noticed that aspect of the model. I'm a huge, huge fan of things that change forms or transform into robots. This model reminds me of a cheesy yet cool 80's cartoon called M.A.S.K., where every vehicle and some buildings, convert to a combat mode. It's easily one of my top 3 favorite Chima sets, and just a lot of fun to play around with. If you go for this sort of thing, I highly recommend it. If you're like me, you'll have it careening off the table, converting to jet mode, and flying all sorts of aerial maneuvers. Great fun!
  15. Back stories are always interesting. I liked the Alpha Team sets and had a number of them. The whole spy thing with vehicles that convert to other modes thrills me. It set the precedent for the Agents sets, which nailed the spy theme with just the right touch of satire and a lot of really cool sets.
  16. As a big fan of mecha, I was pretty excited to see this in animated form in the Chima cartoon previews. After hoping, with mounting enthusiasm and anticipation, for an official set, I was a bit dismayed by the actual set when pics were shown from the various toy fairs. KieldaMan's excellent review has me on the fence. I still have some qualms with the overall design, since there are a few really impressive gorilla mech MOCs out there...see Mark Stafford's Fabu-Force mech for Mike the Monkey on Flickr. Mike's Gorilla Mech is what I was hoping for, but I'm warming to the Striker, and most likely will pick it up at some point. It's a mech, and mecha are cool.
  17. I picked up Eglor's Twin Bike this evening on impulse. I hadn't given it much consideration before tonight, but one look at the box and I was hooked. The bike becomes a flying machine by rotating the undercarriage so the wheels become engines. The design reminds me of M.A.S.K., an 80's cartoon wherein vehicles transformed into battle machines, which in turn spawned a cool line of toys. This sort of thing is right up my alley, and the set did not disappoint. The transformation works very well and produces a nice looking aircraft, while the bike mode Is reminiscent of Tron, with those dark azure rings. I wish LEGO would do a whole line based on this sort of conversion theme. It'd work well for an Agents 2.0. Anyway, thought I'd share.
  18. Am I a LUG member? No. AFAIK, there is no LUG within my area (Spokane, WA). In fact, I know of no other AFOLs besides my self and my wife, who does it for me more than out of her own interest. However, if a LUG started here, I'd consider joining. Would I be active? Possibly, depending on what was required. As for online involvement, Eurobricks is the only forum in which I post, and I don't post often. I'm content with browsing the various topics that interest me, and if I feel strongly enough about something, I'll post. I'm not a socially inclined person, so I keep my commentary and involvement to a comfortable low. However, I do love this site, as it's a remarkable resource for reviews (thanks to all who do them), pics, news, MOCs, and just general commentary involving the hobby.
  19. I live in Spokane, WA, the second largest city in the state, and I've been hoping for a LEGO store for years. Seattle now has 2 stores, but that's a five+ hour drive. The Spokane Valley would be an ideal place to put a store, as the area is growing and enjoys consumerism from both Idaho and Canadian shoppers. I keep hoping. However, I don't want to whine too loudly, as I'm aware that a lot of places don't have any LEGO stores at all, or the stores are neither within reasonable nor convenient driving range.
  20. As would I, if only for a departure from what has become the norm. The Classic ships, Futuron, and Blacktron all stick out to me as some of the most striking sets, and I'd love to see a modern update. I personally wouldn't mind a Galaxy Explorer II using wedges and curved parts, so long as the overall look of the venerable original is captured. My hope is that the designers will at least put a Classic Space inspired model in the hands of some market research kids, and find that today's kids find the designs as cool as we found the originals. If the interest was there, who knows. But, yeah, it would be nice to have one line of sets devoted to space exploration, terra-forming, colony-building...something that doesn't require weapons, but focused entirely on a more passive, yet fun and exciting, mission. Unfortunately, the toy trend manifests the apparent belief that kids have no interest in a toy unless it can shoot another. :(
  21. Insect form aside, this would have fit in with the Atlantis theme well, in the current color scheme. I'm looking forward to seeing it in the intended purple. Great job, as always!
  22. Excellent review of a great set, Rufus. I appreciate comparison pics with both 7191 and studio models, as it's always nice to see how close these LEGO representations approximate their "real-life" counterparts. I agree that the nose is the weakest element, but the new engines with their lovely augmentor detail make up for it. Part of me wishes they'd built in some working landing gear, but I'm guessing most folks would rather see her flying, so a stand makes more sense. Many thanks to TLG for including two copies of the infernal windscreen decals, as I botched my first attempt, even following their advisory in the instructions, which I've been using since, to good effect, on other sets. I wish LEGO would print large prominent parts like this when the placement of decals has to be so precise. It becomes a frustrating irritant to what is otherwise an overall enjoyable experience. I thought about doing this myself, but relented. After seeing it done, and done so well, I regret not doing it on mine, since the "glass" parts of the stickers never apply clear no matter how careful you are. I managed a good application of my stickers, but your cutouts are brilliant.
  23. I couldn't agree with you more. I saw these at TRU last weekend, and though I'm not too interested in Coast Guard, this and the helicopter had me on the fence for a minute, esp since they had a BOGO 50% off sale. Alas, I relented and got a couple Galaxy Squad sets instead, since they had all but the Titan. I'm holding out for the new Cargo sets...the VTOL and the cargo plane are pretty much buy on sight for me. I like the new cockpit piece and the resemblance to the V-22 Osprey makes me giddy. If I have any beef with the large planes, it's the lack of retracting gear. On a model that size, it wouldn't be hard to implement, although the large lower forward fuselage piece would need a cutout to accommodate the gear while maintaining a smooth surface. If they're going for realism with the rounded fuselage parts, why not go the rest of the way and make retracting gear? Why, LEGO, Why?!
  24. My wife and I saw ST: Into Darkness today. It is definitely an homage to Wrath of Khan, which I got but was lost on my wife, who, shamefully, hasn't seen Wrath of Khan. I'll have to remedy that in the near future. Still, the writers and director get these characters, IMHO, and I like that they can simultaneously maintain the major characteristics of the original cast, while putting a bit of a spin on the dynamics of those same characters. Die-hard fans of the classic shows and movies may not like it, but this fan does.
  25. Me too! I'm hoping the BOGO made up the mark-up difference. My TRU had some new Castle sets, the new Coast Guard sets, and Crater Creeper, Hive Crawler, and Eradicator Mech. I wish they'd had the new City VTOL from the Cargo theme...closest we'll probably get to the V-22 Osprey in an official LEGO set.
