  1. I always imagine you to be a guy with a web spider program and a magic URL and password or something, but it's none of my business really. It's great that you get us these early hi-res photos, thanks. My toy shop got put away today for my impending move back to the States. What a beautiful set it is! It seemed a little on the fragile side when I put it together, but it took awhile to break it down into parts. I've not yet managed to secure the new cottage for my villiage, but will do so this year hopefully even though it seems a little too large and has too much snow on the roof. Anyway, thanks, Joe
  2. Very interesting, thanks. I've been buying some 1:87 Siku brand trucks here lately with an eye on getting my HO layout back up-and-running when I get back to the States, so those are really cool. The little Esso box catches my eye as well, much like the little garages the cars came in. Cheers, Joe
  3. It was just a normal university in the midwestern US, but it was a long time ago. I clearly remember that that's what he said. EDIT - Sorry, like I said; it was a long time ago so maybe I'm not articulating my thoughts very well. Living in China isn't exactly great for my English either! Anyway, I believe what the professor meant was that if you spend $1 on something (stock, advertising, etc.) you should try to get at least a 3X return on your investment, before your cost of business is factored in. That sounds about right to me, but I'm not a businessman. So when people talk about a set doubling in price, it doesn't sound like a really great return on your investment when you factor in your costs, time, etc. Does that make sense? Thanks, Joe
  4. I dunno guys (and gals). Business school taught me that you should make at least 3X your investment. This sounds like nickle and dime stuff here. If you are smart, lucky, hard-working, etc. then I guess it's possible, but your money (and time) might be put to better use elsewhere. Does anyone know how much you have to spend to buy in bulk from Lego (or their distributor) and what is the minimum amount of sets you need to buy? Buy low and sell high is the key, right? Joe
  5. Happy Birthday! There's a Lego shop there, I hope? Joe
  6. I was just wishing aloud for my favorite livery. Thanks for your long reply BTW. Joe
  7. Painting Lego? I used to respect you (just kidding). Joe
  8. This topic begs the question; what was the very first Lego promotional set? "It's a new toy every day", catchy! Thanks, Joe
  9. The Lone Ranger has arrived in China for what it's worth. I was surprised to see the sets at the store the other day, usually it takes longer to get them here. Normally sets are 2X US prices here but the stagecoach is a hair less than $100, more than 3X (excluding US sales taxes)! All of the sets look nice IMO although I would have preferred a non-licensed western theme. If I see the sets on sale in the US I'll get them. Joe
  10. Really nice units, thank YOU. Joe
  11. I'll be moving back to the States in a few months and would happily pay EU prices for everything if free health care was included. Can we start a petition for that? Joe
  12. I really like that a lot. Thanks! Joe
  13. Really, really, nice! Thanks for sharing. Joe
  14. Bang bang Chitty Chitty Bang Bang we love you... Joe
  15. Wow, it's huge! Can it be lifted by one person? Very nice, thanks for sharing. Joe
  16. That's an excellent point peterab, thanks. Nice layout you've got there dundarach. I'm jealous of your motive power; Santa Fe, BNSF, Amtrak, EN and probably more...nice! Joe
  17. Really nice, I especially like the interior. Joe
  18. I'm also interested in the tables as I'll be building something similar myself soon. Do you join the 12mm plywood sheets together at all or just put them next to each other? My suggestions; I like the backdrop suggestion, just a simple one painted light blue would work wonders. Of course if you want to go all out and paint a CITY box-style diaorama that would be better! The tunnel around the back is a great suggestion as well. Would it be kosher to make a paper-mache one (like on an HO layout) or does it have to be Lego? Joe
  19. You've got that setup as 9V, is that correct? Are the trucks the same size as PF ones? I'm holding 3677 and trying to figure out why they made it so long. You have what appears to be a one stud gap between the trucks and the 'bricks' hanging down under the frame (and I assume it goes around corners w/o any problems) while 3677 has a two stud gap. I think 3677 would look much better if it were shorter so I'm considering MODding it. Joe
  20. Hi, I was going to welcome you to Eurobricks but I see you've made over 120 posts already so I guess it's a little late for that. What is the purpose of your post? Are you advertising your BrickLink store? Joe
  21. Truly incredible, above and beyond the realm of excellent. Well done! Joe
  22. That is really, really nice even though it's not in dark blue. Seriously though, that was always one of my favorite engines in my HO days, I guess because Athearn produced so many different ones. The pride and joy of my HO stuff is a pair of TRRA switchers I painted and decaled. The cab does look a little stubby. How many bricks in length is the entire unit? Those GP20s are awesome too. Joe
  23. Thanks peterab, I appreciate it. I was reading in another thread where someone had a bunch of card tables put together in his basement and a poster suggested putting thin sheets of wood (sorry but I forget the type of wood) on top to mitigate 'settle' and gaps. That sounds ok to me BUT it would be impossible to have one piece of wood to fit over more than a few tables (so there would still be gaps) and it would increase the weight. Sorry for my ignorance but I've been living in China for a long time; is it possible to get high quality folding tables or is building your own the way to go? Hope this is on-topic? Joe
  24. That looks like a great idea. If I were to do something like that I'd probably learn how to do it myself as, like you say, it would be expensive otherwise. What about Ikea? Do you have them down under? They always seem to have something close to what I need. Joe
  25. I'm planning a similar project and am thinking that it's best to be as flexible as possible, so that means being modular. Fold-out card tables sound like a good solution to me. You can - of course - arrange them how you want and you can always buy more of them and/or remove some as you see fit. Maybe you want to build your own table(s), so that's a little different although you certainly could build smaller ones to put together. If any of our more experienced members would like to weigh in on the 'card table option' I would be very interested. Thanks, Joe
