  3. And consider that those sets were designed in 1980 and were still amazing 6 years later (they still are actually). Another amazing thing about those sets is that they used such a relatively small amount of specialised pieces. Especially compared to today.

  5. That was also my guess. I guess, lego realised that separate springs are not a good idea.
  6. One thing i always wondered about 8860... what's the thing with the springs in the rear? Were there any sets that were actually sold with the springs made out of connectors and separate springs, or was that just for the photo on the box?
  7. They did modify everything to lpepower specs afaik. And you can clearly see that they use industrial tubing, just like i do.

  10. The new worm gear found in the Construction crew set would be perfect for that, since it doesn't slide on axles. Combine it with a right sized gear and voila! :)
  11. Remember that pneumatic engines, just like steam engines, have a totally different powerband and torque characteristic than internal combustion engines. Here the torque is always present, even when starting from a dead stop.
  12. They're glued. Today i'd use 9L steering links. The flimsyness can be fixed a bit, but it'll never reach the level of rack and pinion.
  13. That steering box is called recirculating ball steering. The whole setup is flimsy in real life, let alone in lego.... Rack and pinion ftw :P I tried something ike that in my charger, with a worm gear:

  15. The engine is 100% lego. The driving tube would be covered in small chain links, so the gears could mesh with it.

  19. The hoses i use are polyetilene and they do NOT pop out. There's a reason i don't use simple lego silicone hoses. :P Also... Blackbird is amazing as always. Great explanation.
  20. The black plastic tubes that i use are rated at 10 bar pressure. That said, if you understand the laws of physics, you will know that when 8 bar enters the engine, it gets split. At best, 2 bars can reach one single cylinder in the I4 engine. Since the engine is double acting, that means that all 4 cylinders do work at the same time, unlike in a 4 stroke inline 4 engine, where only 1 works at a time.
  21. I have been unable to generate more than 8 bars with my home compressor, so i was never able to fully test the limits. But the maximum that could happen is the air starting to escape through the rubber ring in the piston and through the swithc into the surroundings. No explosion would occur.
  22. And set reviews on the internet. :) Which actually, from a collectors point of view makes me buy sets and not open them at all :) Ofc this isn't realistic, because every set needs to be built and expirienced, only if then torn down and put back into resealable bags and into the box.
  23. Agreed. But the cardboard isn't the main problem here. The problem is the plastic bags. So much waste material after opening. In the sets i started collecting i put the parts n resealable bags, that can be used ad infinitum, just like the bricks, instead of the tear open bags that lego uses. Maybe a place to improove? Use resealable bags and then they can put rims into them aswell.
