[Feature-Build] Prepare to be Amortised!
Bregir replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I don't see how you can be amused by this... Tax is a very serious thing! *scrolling* Ok then, that might have been sarcasm... A very amusing build, especially those fleeing pirates put a smile on my face!- 14 replies

Great work, Ska - you have really managed to make all the islands look interesting in their own way. But the best thing is how their descriptions really fit with their shapes - Had I made those descriptions independently, I would have reached something very similar!

Well, well, colour me impressed! This is a truly beautifully designed schooner. Especially the rigging steals the show for me - I wouldn't think brick-built sails could work that well! Of remarkable details, I would mention the brickbuilt cannons and swivels, the fact that you have made room for the boat on deck, the capstan (with capstan bars!) and that perfect anchor! Of course, the overall shape of the hull is great too - it really looks like a long, sleek, blockade runner! The lack of ornaments make her look very utilitarian, and I like that. My only suggestion would be to built it in brick and give it a more elaborate rigging, but you have already made some very pretty shrouds, so it is really nitpicking. Overall, this is one pretty ship. Very well done! (That means I APPROVE! )

Well well, captain, somehow this (apart from the good timing) reminds me of something.... *cough cough* O'BRIAN :D Very well transposed for BoBS and great build to go with it! I do feel bad for Cpt Leon, though ;) Approved!

Very pretty tavern, there. I really like this style of openbacked, Amelia Street buildings, and hope to see more. (I might even contribute at one point my self! I like the interiors and the lively feel of the people gathered, but my favourite is the exterior. I actually thinks it looks rather classy and reputable. Montoye will most definitely visit it next he is in Arlinsport! Well done!

[COR -Feb FB3] Lavender Patch and Apiary, Arlinsport, Tiberia
Bregir replied to Ayrlego's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
This is a beautiful build in both idea and execution, from the diagonal fields, over the fence, cows and vegetaion, to the apiary. And the frame looks really good too. As I cannot approve, I will only say that this is absolutely lovely.- 23 replies

Well, basically, I agree with everything Captain Dee said here. I think it is mainly big, because it is essential a house put on top of a hull. But really, that kind of construction only came about after the introduction of engines and the abolition of sails. Until then (and in many cases later as well) cabins were an integral part of the whole hull-structure. The current construction here makes it impossible for you to bring the sails down closer to the deck, makes your vessel top-heavy, and would most definately make her hard to stear, as there would always be a big windpressure on the cabin. So even *if* you try building a bigger vessel, I'd suggest a different approach, where you integrate the cabin more Further, right now there seems to be no way to reach the quarterdeck! I think you put the sails to pretty good use, but would definitely suggest you try out custom sails next time. Take a look at a few pictures of different shiptypes (this subject on wikipedia is very useful) and start from there. All in all, this is still a very nice build - you have some very nice detailing. I just think you need to get a bit better understanding of how vessels work and sail, and you will be improving to even higher levels!

That is a very pretty plantation, Kai. I will not repeat everything others have said, but the house is great, as is the stable, courtyard and fields. I have only two points of critique: 1) There seems to be a blue tint to your pictures. In fact, when I first saw them on the phone, I thought the road was build in some sort of light blue. You should be able to edit this out. 2) The road is far too wide. If I were you, I would cut down the road to 6 or maybe 8 studs in width. This size of road isn't even realistic for the mainstreets of most cities this age and place! And it really dwarves both the fields, buildings, and courtyard, which is a shame. All in all, though, I very much approve! Great work!

[Cor - Feb FB3] The Crossed Swords Tavern
Bregir replied to BrickOn's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Lovely little tavern. I approve! While I agree that a bit of tilework would have eased the transition between studs-up and studs-down, I think the hull piece works tolerably well for roof. The interiors are nice and lively, especially with that chandeliiiiiier. As to your walls, you should try to mix the plates more with the bricks, so that the bricks are also placed more randomly. Right now, you have basically taken out a few bricks and replaced them by tiles, which looks nice, but isn't perfect. Well done, though! -
Dee Shipyards of the Empire of Corrington
Bregir replied to Captain Dee's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Well well, sir, you definitely set a high standard from the start! I shall very much be looking forward to seeing more pictures of this, as the current is like but a taster for a great desert! WE WANTZ MOAR! In other news, I feel inclined to invest in this, if for no other reason than aestetics! I suppose it is located on Tiberia? Or maybe even the old world? (And can it then be licensed? I forgot) Pwease sell me a share! -
[OL - FB4] 'Amphitrite's Lily'
Bregir replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
That is one magnificent hull, KB! I am really pleased to see that we do not limit ourselves to one period of time, and that you make the effort to explain her somewhat dated design is just another plus in my book! The shaping is brilliant, and those fore- and sterncastles are just wonderful - right in the spirit of the cog. I love the wide, bulky shape of the hull. I can't help wondering how steady that hull would be, if if was build "in the brick", so to speak. And lastly, I believe the sails point in the right direction this time - just having one sail does make it a tad less complicated, I find! Some might comment that the sail looks a bit small though, to propel such a considerable vessel, and wonder why the sheets are attached midsail and runs forward? Shouldn't the sheets be attached to the actual sheets of the sail(corners) and be pulling backwards, against the pressure of the wind? All in all this is a beautiful build and I approve. It is nice to see the Oleon navy growing, albeit not as fast as one could wish. We need adverseries to offer us honourable battles! -
That is a very pretty cutter, KB. I like her lines and the railings are looking great. The rigging is very well done - those brick.built sails work surprisingly well. For some reason, her lines makes me think about Dutch vessels. I love the way her cabin is built into the hull, and the transition is just beautiful. I wonder at her current sails - where would the wind come from for her to have her sails up like this? Surely, the mainsail and the maincourse cannot both draw, the way they are set. The way the sails are flowing, I would expect the mainsail to be carried to one side to catch the wind from abaft. Probably, at that wind, I suppose she wouldn't set both maincourse and mainsail, but rather only one of them, and the topsail. In any case, definitely approved! Well done, beautifully built. The Oleon shipyards sure turn out some pretty ships!

Probably your barracks - wasn't that a freebuild too? Alternatively, you got 10 extra db for also posting your intro as a freebuild. And about taxes - so far, they do not come out of your pockets, but are generated as a 20 % bonus for your faction. So if you make 10 dbs, your faction gets 2. (But you still get the 10!)

And this is for each zone, right? So that the longer the trip the riskier.

[SR- FB1] The Donatus (Class 2 Armed)
Bregir replied to Kwatchi's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Nice litte sloop, Kwatchi. I really like the colourscheme, and the hull turned out really nice, although it is a little hard to make out the black in the pictures. The sterncastle is pretty nice too, and looks great from behind with that sloping backwall, the arches and the brown accents. Custom guns are always nice, although the gunports are a little close to the waterline. I wouldn't like to open her leeward ports in a fresh gale! As has become my (self-assumed) role here, I will comment a bit on the rigging. First of all, she appears to be wearing her storm sails (apart from the very large jib), as they are very small! And that sail before the mast with a boom going forward from the mast appears to be a new invention. I am not too sure it would work in reality, though... I would suggest giving her to staysails (jibs) before the mast, by adding another forestay (the rope that prevents the mast from falling backwards), probably from the top of the mast to the middle of the bowsprit or so. That way, you can have one jib on the existing forestay, and another (inner) jib on the new forestay. And then I would suggest making the mainsail much larger, with a long boom reaching all the way to the wheel (or a little longer, but not overreaching the stern), and adding a gaff on the overside on the mainsail, so that you get a 4 sided polygon. (From your pictures, you might already have done that, but it is quite hard to make out.) All in all a great sloop, but as you note yourself, the rigging can use some work - and I agree - it is definitely a learning process! Great work, and welcome amongst us! -

Cool build and nice intro. Those toys are looking great, as is the vegetation. I, for one, is happy to see Oleon's ranks swelling, as the great fanatical empire has been somewhat underrepresented so far! -
Coyle Shipping Co. February MRCA Escorted Trade runs
Bregir replied to Mike S's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Are you quite sure about this, Mike? Class 0, class 1A and the barge class are all limited to one zone, but it says nothing of the sort for the rest. And all ships can visit two ports, so I would think she could join the slow convoy. Leadership, please advice. -
Quite a crew, Captain Meloche. It seems my trading company stocks just went down again! Damned pirates! ;)

Coyle Shipping Co. February MRCA Escorted Trade runs
Bregir replied to Mike S's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
With a speed of 1, she should be able to join the "Quick Wing", as any vessel can visit at least two ports. But I don't know if there are any disadvantages of bringing a speed one vessel along. -
Nice looking vessel, BrickOn. It is good to see the shipyards of Corrington pushing out all these fine vessels! Rule, Corrington, Corrington rule the waves! Especially if this is your first time experimenting with rigging, I am very impressed! The colour and texture of those sails is looking great - how did you make them, and of what? I would, however, suggest measuring next time A few comments on the proportions of the rigging: The bowsprit looks very large for the height of the mast (probably more due to a stubby mast than a long bowsprit). This also gives the forestays and thus the jibs a strange angle, and puts the square sail placement sort of off too.The (spanker) mainsail is very long, and protrudes over the stern of the vessel. I think she would be rather hard to handle, as the wind pressure will be apt to turn her round. I would suggest the following (which you should be able to do while reusing the current sails). Transform her from a cutter to a sloop, like so: 1) Move the mast forward far enough for the mainsail boom not to overreach the stern of the vessel. 2) Increase the mastheight by 25-30 % and lower the bowsprit to almost horisontal. This should allow you to reuse the jibs. 3) Raise the square sail with the mast, so that it is more or less completely above the mainsail. (And possibly, lower the mainsail by as much as you can, without hitting the helmsman.) That way, I think you will find she looks much more natural, realistic, and balanced. I think it would be relatively easy to do, and you have a great starting point with her current state. The hull looks good too, although for a cutter, the tall prefabs does make her look pretty bulky. I like the use of custom cannons, and I think the railing is good too. You might have achieved a more balanced look by building closer to the waterline, rather than giving her sort of a deck on height with the top of the prefabs, but then she wouldn't look as spacious and seaworthy as she does! I am undecided on this, and a change in rigging might make up the balance. Well, that was a lot of words - I think you did a great job, and I hope you can use the feedback!

[COR - February FB2] Amelia Street Bakery
Bregir replied to Mike S's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
This is shaping up to be a very pretty little street, and Mr. Coyle sure seems to be expanding business rapidly! I believe this is my favourite of the three, but the picture of them altogether really shows how harmonic they look, without being too similar. The winding staircase looks nice, and I like how the chimney goes through all the way. One wonders what all those soldiers are about, though! -
[SR - FB3] Antigone's Fury (Class 5T)
Bregir replied to Vedauwoo's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
That is a great looking cat!... Erhm, ship, I mean! For a merchantman, that row of cannon is looking quite imposing, and she makes me think of the well-armed Indiamen of the East-Indian Trading companies. Although she is a trader, I am certain she will have quite a bite, should push come to shove! How will you go about licensing her? Out of your own pockets, or? I think another jib would suit her well, and I can't help to think that three square sails on the foremast would do so too. And while we are at the rigging, the spankersail (mizzen) seems to be somehow out of proportion. I think the boom and gaff are too long, and that the gaff should be higher up to give a more balanced looking sail. I like her detailing, and there seems to be plenty of brass and guilding for the crew to polish! While the sterncastle looks great, it seems a bit tall to me. Maybe a less "abrupt" transition from deck to quarterdeck would make her look more elegant? She does look very tall from behind - I sure hope she is a stiff ship, to counter all that topweight! This is really nitpicking, though - she is a beautifully looking ship (yes, ship, as she is full rigged ), awash with great details, and I shouldn't like to meet her in anything less than a class 4 A, and even then I wouldn't be too sure of the outcome. Hereby approved! -
[COR - February FB1] Woodworker's Shop

What a pretty building, Mike. It does seem somewhat extravagant for a workshop, with those large windows and that beautiful chandelier, but I guess good light is important for the craft! Great work! -
Coyle Shipping Co. February MRCA Escorted Trade runs
Bregir replied to Mike S's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
As the two speed 3 runs are already full, are we going to open up another one? As far as I remember, we have more than three warships now, so it should be possible. Or are we possible going to put two escorts on run 3A or 3b, and thus include two (or more) full flotillas of merchantmen? I am asking as I am leaning towards registering the Otter as a 3f and sending her trading or on a bounty mission. -

Bregir replied to Vedauwoo's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Beautifully done and very lively shipyard. As others have said, the many different parts of the process shown is great, and there are so many nice details. My only comment would be to do something about the exposed top of the prefab hulls, as their deep recesses look somewhat out of place.
