Caterham Seven
Jeroen Ottens replied to Sheepo's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Wow! Incredible beautiful model. I especially like the curves you made with the ribbed hoses. They work really well. I'm not that big a fan of stacked beams, but I do like the unibody frame. Do you have extra diagonals or reinforcements in the frontside of the car to prevent the parallellogram from skewing? -
My building method has evolved over the years. At first (~20 years ago) I built solely with bricks. I just started with the most complicated part of the model and built outwards from there. Than I learned to build with an infinite amount of bricks (during my years as Lego technic designer). There it was a matter of building till you got stuck and than start again with the previous version(s) next to it. After I left Lego I used an adapted version of this method where I build 3 copies simultaneously, 1 for the structural integerity, 1 for the looks and 1 for the mechanisms (I described this more extensively in the Hispabrick magazine no 15). For my latest MOC however I use a combination of DLL and real bricks. I find it is much easier in DLL to replace bricks deep inside the structure to get that extra hole needed some studs further away. I use the real bricks when I need to assess the strength of the structure, power of motors, looks, slipping gears and ranges of motion.

Awesome MOC Is the color typical for ROPA machines? Or was the plentiful supply of yellow Lego technic parts the reason you for yellow?

Great, great MOC! You just proved that indeed you can make anything from Lego (In the Netherlands Lego used the advertisment slogan "van Lego kun je alles maken"). -
Thanks for the review. Again some memories brought back. This one I designed together with Uwe Wabra. I can't remember the B-model though, I must have blocked that from my memory . This set was meant to work together with the cybermaster set so we had to incorporate a certain set of pieces to make some bigger cybermaster thingy. By the time we finished the plane we found out that we almost hadn't used any of the pieces. That's where the strange contraptions that could be mounted on the cockpit come from. The set actually has two more 'features' (I remember one of the marketing guys complaining that we had added so many customizations to this model that it couldn't be displayed on the box anymore). First of all you can dismount the wings and cockpit and recombine them to a small plane by sticking the wings in the holders for the contraptions Secondly the rearwings could be taken apart and turned into a hangglider frame where you could attach the wings to and hang the technic figure from. So many thanks again for the review.

This is already a clever solution. Another possible solution is something with a gear rack passing multiple gears (look in the technic idea book 891 for two implementations of this idea). You use one input to slide the gear rack forward. It will then first engage the first gear, when you continue it will disengage and engage the second gear. When moving backwards the sequence is reversed.

This is a very special set for me. It is the set that pulled me out of my dark-ages into AFOL-hood. I remember pondering over it in the toyshop. Converting the price to crates of beer (yeah student years ). It was my girlfriend (now my wife ) who pushed me into buying it. It was a great set to start my collection with and within two years I had collected all the big models (and most of the smaller models). One year later my wife followed me to Denmark to work at the Lego company. A dream job to come true. But I will never forget that it all started with this set... I must admit that I had forgotten how old the set actually was. It even featured this 3651 element! Thanks for the review Leg godt Jeroen

Lego Technic 2h 2013

Ah well , just my dreams than... Maybe I should build it myself... hmmm... I just tried to interpret the pixels and hoped for the best... , but it is confirmed by @Ondra: no RC, so that just leaves the question what the yellow part in the PF section is...- 902 replies

Lego Technic 2h 2013
Jeroen Ottens replied to sama's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Does antone know why there are so many elements displayed at the lower right corner of the 42009 box? The part where all the power function modules are placed? I'm tempted to think that it is remote controlled... With 2 receivers and possibly a engineered construction for the remote? I think I see: 2 receivers (at the left top) 1 batterybox (at the left bottom) 1 XL motor (at the right middle) something grey (at the right bottom) something yellow (at the left middle) It doesn't really make sense though, too few motors, too many receivers. But, suppose it has the same functionality as the 8043... Assuming mechanism is in the main vehicle, only two functions can pass through the turntable... A1 boom up/down A2 boom in/out B1 riggers B2 rotate superstructure hmm still no need for 2 receivers... special elements to get 3 functions through the turntable? A3 cable in/out B3 drive C1 steer- 902 replies

Barman's MOCs
Jeroen Ottens replied to barman's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Wow, that is a really cool hand. I especially like the way you control the fingers! Amazing. -
I wouldn't let that deter you. The model will go through an extensive review period when it reaches 10000 votes, so the TLC designers will make many, many versions anyway. OTOH it is a licensed product (albeit from a known affiliate), a generic oldsmobile might even stand a bigger chance...

Wow Sariel. Beautiful model. You may regard this a simple construction (and looking at the bottomphoto I tend to agree with you), but capturing those curves is complexity in itself. Keep up the good work And I second the CUUSOO idea. I think it does fit right in the scale/beauty sweetspot for CUUSOO (and we might finally get some proper spoked wheels from TLC )

The controls are one of the compromises I made. There are two vertical axles right behind the cockpit that control roll/yaw and pitch. I just couldn't get the signals to the cockpit to make a proper joystick. The flaps on the main wings are controlled with little levers in the wings (The internals of the plane were so crowded that I also couldn't get these levers connected to each other ) As I also wrote in the Hispabrick article, this plane has very little internal space. It is almost the same size as my Tomcat, but it has much, much less functions inside, while it is more dense packed (the big advantage of studless building )

Great review It does bring back a lot of memories too, me being one of the designers of this set. To answer some questions: When we developed this set, we actually developed it in blue (with silver wheelrims and some yellow accents). However team Larsen was already an existing team and they had yellow and red as their trademark colour. Since Lego wanted to sponsor them we had to adopt the colour scheme to theirs. The gear on liftarm construction in the drivetrain was a late adjustment. We first had all gears fixed, but when the model ran into a wall it was actually so strong that it churned up the gears (100% of the times actually. We churned a lot of gears just for the fun of it (and to show off the awesome power to the other designers). The steering had been a major headache in the development as well. We first tried to make a mechanism with gears & axles, but that interfered too much with the drivetrain, so in the end we found a solution with the flexcables. It did work a lot better in our office than the official ones in the stores in my memory though. Probably bad memory, cause I wouldn't know why it would be different.

Have you ever seen my F14A Tomcat? Flying at high speed On my Flickr account you can find also pictures from my Tomcat. That one has wings that are 1 stud thick with pneumatic actuated front & aft flaps, brakes & swingwing function. I hope that helps. More pictures can be found in the hispabrick article. Including some details on the construction & functionality. If there are particular details you want a photo of, just let me know.

Hi, I would like to present to you my latest MOC. A 1:24 scale model of the Russian fighter Sukhoi SU-37. It is one of the most agile planes in the world due to its thrust vector system. With this system the nozzles of the engines can be rotated to help the flight control surfaces to steer the plane. It leads to phenomenal manoeuvres, like the cobra where the plane stands upright on its tail while flying forward. My model features, besides the vector thurst control nozzles and moveable flight control surfaces also electrically controlled landing gear, landing gear bay doors, airbrake and canopy. The hispabrick magazine has been so kind to publish a more detailed article on this plane, so for more details you can download their magazine: http://www.hispabric...ck-magazine-015 On my flickrpage you can find a video that shows the functionality: http://www.flickr.co...ens/8278405247/ [edit: updated the photo] Leg godt, Jeroen Ottens
