well some people prefer only to show the over all pic because they're not interested in details of interiors, perhaps that doesn't even exist. many display mocs in legoland don't have interiors either... to me, building a big ship like this would be the oppurtunity to add details but that's just me...

Is it okay to have Pirates intersect with Castle?
snefroe replied to Cyclonis's topic in LEGO Pirates
i don't see a problem with combining both. After all, the lego company designed a set that combined castle and town many years back... i'm refering to aredhel's and apo's pride and joy, set 1592 i think you can use the parts of castle to build fortesses, or pirate ship hulls to build classic castle ships, but i don't think that people do that very often, because there's a gap in time between both themes. so sure, there's a compatibility between both, but it doesn't go very far... and i also don't think that TLG used many classic castle parts in pirates... -
1) burning a flag is far more than burning a piece of textile. A flag is a symbol of what you are, what you've accomplished as a people in a collective, a society. it's what you stand for. that's why we're using flags for all sorts of ceremonies. they may be meaningless to you, but a huge majority can't live without them... 2) i think this case clearly shows what happens if a meaningless event like printing drawings in a danish newspaper, falls into the hands of people with hidden agendas. you can't help but wonder why the danish imams decided to take these drawings with them to the Middle East, causing the misery to start... It was extremely stupid to take the drawings to the Middle east and the export the danish problem of integration to a region that is already saturated by extremism in every possible field. I hope some one is taking steps to do something against this person. another problem with the islam is that, unlike christianity, it's not cetralised, there's no hierarchy, there's no counterpoint to the catholic pope for instance. There's no over all structure or institution that western governments can talk to. that puts these imams in a very sensitive situation, unfortunately, several can't seem to live up to that resposability...

i think we should go for the 2 day pass! any thought if that includes a 10% off at the pab? i will be leaving on Sunday evening i guess...

according to BL prices the ship costs between 60-150$ the island is between 20-60$ naturely, these prices are heavily influenced by supply and demand, they only show what the market thinks they are worth. they're not the original price and much depends on the condition the models are in, also wether there's a box and instructions. ebay is a different matter, because it's far more volatile, far more difficult to get any statistics and in my experience, you never know how an auction is going to end. sometimes the prices are ridiculus, sometimes it seems nobody is interested...

i think at least Belgium and Denmark have exactly the same problem: the quality of the imams in our country. i don't know how this works in Denmark, but our imams aren't trained for the job in Belgium but in their country of origine, and very often they're not even allowed to preach in their native country because they're too radical. So what do they do? they come to europe and start preaching here, since there's no policy, nor control on these matters, they can more or less continue to distribute their radical ideas. we had, and probably still have, a major problem with a few imams in Brussels. they seem to recruit young muslims to go and fight in Iraq. a few months back, one of the suicide attacks in Iraq was performed by a Belgian muslim woman... since then our secret service is really keeping an eye on what's going on in these brussels mosks, but the matter is very sensitive because muslims don't want to be seen as terrorists or potential terrorists. So now politicians are saying that we need to train the imams ourselves and make sure they're not of the radical type, but integrated elements of Belgian society. we don't have fight between christian reps and muslim reps. in fact, even tho most people aren't practicing christians anymore, they all have great respect for our chief cardinal Danneels who more than once said that Islam still needs to go thu a fase of "Enlightement", meaning, Islam still has to catch up with modern sociey. Christianitity has done that during the last 50 years or so, at least in Western Europe, Islam is still miles away... Once again Danneels showed that he's one of the smartest people in Belgium...

ordered parts from BL. hope to get them next week...

1) hm... an attack against denmark is an attack against a NATO country, so NATO is at war now? calm down a bit... this kind of thinking doesn't really help... 2) i still think people are blowing this out of proportion. first, i don't see why people in the Middle East should be shocked by what's being printed in a danish newspaper. Again, it's orchestrated. Denmark just has the bad luck to be the European country involved... You mention Syria... do you really think the government doesn't have anything to do with these attacks? Politicians are just using this to strengthen their own position in their own country. after all, they know how dangerous the introduction of western democracy is, they know they're out of business if there are democratic elections, so by responding to these cartoons, they kill two birds with one stone: 1) they compromise the west; 2) they promote themselves as great muslim leaders, hoping they can damage the extremist parties in the Middle East. Egypt or Jordan are perfect examples... 3) besides, the first people in the Middle East to react to this was the Palestinian people, the most secularised of all muslims in the Middle East. Obviously Hamas has everything to do with this. After all, everybody is the west is now saying they won the Palestinian elections not because the people are behind their program, but because they hate the Palestinian Authority. this is a great chance to show the world they're wrong...

you're absolutely right! European history as we teach it at school is an interpretation of passed events by European historians and politicians... without any doubt, 1492 was a great year for Spain, but a bad one for the Americas. their "Dark Ages" started then, even tho i think the Mayans were already gone by that time.

I think I can explain that. I believe that it is the number of posts a user has made in the last 24 hours (therefore the last day time wise, but not calander day). So if I made a post at 7:01am on Tuesday and another at 8:01am on Tuesday, on Wednesday at 7:02am I would have 1 post in the list. Hope you understand what I'm saying. Jon. that was what tt also suggested, but i don't think it's that, because this member was american, think it was D1, but there was no change for a Canadian member... i think they both should have been changed if it were a question of timezones...

i must admit, some of us, me included, were kind of worried about the trip, because nobody had heard from you in a while :$ In any case, it's great that you're willing to organise this for us! just some thoughts: first, i'll take the plane to Heathrow then the train to Windsor... no need to go all the way to London by train only to find out that you then have to take yet another train, the same one i'll be taking at heathrow... I can't remember how long it took me to get to Windsor tho... It's becoming some sort of a tradition to wait at the airport, and except for Windsor castle, there's not really a landmark we have for every one to recognice. besides, do we really wanna wait in the cold, with our bags (and you haven't seen yoda's suitcase yet!)? But in case some one comes by train, we can always wait at the train station which is close to Windsor Castle... the only unsolved mystery here is: where do we stay and where is it located in regard to this train station? another question, and this is one that needs to be answered asap, because i cannot buy a plane ticket without it, when do we suppose to arrive in Windsor? at noon?, 14.00? later? i guess this depends on what we're gonna do for the rest of the day... how did we do this for the Billund trip...? oops... i forgot... already... :$ and when are we going to leave on Sunday? One thing is great tho... London is closer to Belgium, Germany and France, and we have more flights, so we can stay all Sunday as well... we have two full days... more or less... i don't know if we can enter and leave the park to drop bags at the hotel. it depends on where that is... we did that in Billund, but then we didn't have to pay extra for a bus from the hotel/town to the park. In this case, it possibly is. The legoland bus stops at Windsor Castle and Legoland. so if we're located in town, we're gonna have to take this bus...

sorry jipay, i was refering to the today's top 10 posters... there's something weird going there as well... somethimes a member has for instance 24 posts, and an hour later only 19 or so... weird, but not priority...

it's great to have you back, jon! next time drop EB a line, so we won't be worried...

thanks phes for changing the title  i'm wondering, dj, why you would want a set if you could just as easily buy the MG or the parts thru BL... for probably less...
-
i'd give it a 3. the minifigs are nice, and the accesories are good also, so i would buy it for the parts, if the price is about 12
-
may i ask you to create a title that's more to the point than "Important" in the future? that way people can easily see if this is a topic for them or not and it prevents us from posting topics about the same subject, because the title would clearly state what's it about... but to come to the subject, i think phes has given all the usual options... i can't think of anything else, except for a garage sale or something but they normally don't that in Belgium...

i talked about this with tt a few weeks back. he suggested it may have to do with the clock and the different time zones...

nope the term "dark ages" comes from the renaissance time frame, you know, 15th -16th century, when the center of the world was located in Italy, when peolpe like Da Vinci lived and worked in extremely rich cities like Venice, Genoa and Florence,... The people who lived there saw themselves as the ancestors of the Ancient peoples, so everything they thought or did, was based on how the Ancients lived. "David" for instance, was not regarded by the people as a new work of art, an original, but as a new step in the continuing search for perfection, a queste that was started by the greeks, followed by the romans and now taken up again by modern man. Many even saw it as a simple copy of an ancient master's work, nothing more... To say that the interest for the Ancients was a hype, is an understatement, people lived thru the Ancients. The discovery of the two burried cities, one being Pompei, made it even worse. As "renaissanse" suggests, mankind was "reborn". the first highpoint in human history was the Ancient times, the second highpoint was Renaissance, so everything in between had to be "dark". And for the Italians, it was. After the collapse of the roman empire, they lost control over the world. The center of power in Europe moved to the North, basically France and Germany; the economic power moved to Flanders and Holland; they lost everything, really... untill the 14th - 15th century, when the italian cities like Genoa and Venice fully established trade with the Far East , thru the Middle East... the idea of the "dark age" was further popularised by historians in later centuries. they too felt that humanity had taken a step back after the fall of the roman empire. they only saw the fallback of science, they were disgusted by the control of the church on medieval society, they hated feudalism... they actually believed that people were scared when the year 1000 arrived and, according to the bible, welcomed the end of the world, they believed that the people thought the earth was flat, they believed the concept of a "witch" was medieval, they were wrong... in the end, it's only in the last 50 years that historians except the "Dark Ages" for what it really is: an extremely rich era in every aspect of human society, but no longer focused on the things the Ancient peoples liked or did, no longer based in a very small geographic area, but building the foundations of international trade and modern society...

It looks like photos from Nuremberg are appearing . . .
snefroe replied to sam89's topic in General LEGO Discussion
great find sam! i was expecting a tractor one of these days. TLG seems to design one on a regular basis, but this doesn't look very well... the colour combination is not very good and you hardly have any classic technic brick... the truck is a lot better even tho i feel the wheels are too far apart from each other.... however, it looks like a combination of the technic theme and the good old model team theme -
sure, it's big, and sure that makes it difficult to even give it a decent place, but on the other hand, you finally have the room to go into details, you'll finally be able to build a kitchen, cabins for officers, an armory... i can't wait to see this MOC completed. i'm also wondering how he's going to solve a couple of things, like how is he going to deal with the curves of the hull? and as Suvie said, what is he going to do with the sails?

what exactly is the problem? it works fine for me... on the main forum page that is...

i think this is the first real MF-sized ship i've ever seen. it's not finished but it looks promising! i was going to build one myself in a year or so, but this guy obviously beat me to it... it's a good thing actually, because i don't have 74 cannons anyway... http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=166440

i'm not so happy with the "no studs on top" technique for the pavement... the house is brilliant, but i think he should have used plates for the pavement... but then again, it's not MF scaled, is it?
