Why the challenge would not exist? You still have to come up with something that's similar to real machines. I, for one, do not see any actual difference between most articulated front loaders (but a badly designed custom model still looks bad), so for me looking like a specific model is no plus at all. I think the challenge has almost the same level, and you don't even have reference blueprints with custom designs. If you think about cars, replicating and existing model is very hard. With a custom model, you don't have that many restrictions, but you do have to design the looks for yourself. I've done both custom and replica models, maybe they're not awesome but I have some experience with both. Try to make a custom design and you'll see there are as much challenges, and most of them are the same as with specific models (mechanics, transmissions, space, strength, reliability)

Thanks for the comments! Added to Rebrickable. Here's some help with routing the cables: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=553409 (the folder is not yet public) -
[WIP] Honda S2000

You make the best WIP threads -
He's model is impressive. I was very surprised that it drove on such a rough terrain an in puddles. But it's not in my favourite 6, that's true..

You feed your audience which loves your work, and a small fraction of leeches. Maybe I'm totally wrong about the scope of this thing, but I always felt that the Technic community is small enough to detect who is the real designer and small enough not to be profitable for the few jerks who slip through (maybe even unintentionally) the self regulation of this community. Of course, giving a credit, talking with the designer should be simple as a breathe, but it's not a big surprise if there are people who are totally unaware of these basic moral things.

That was among the first models I supported there. The Tachikoma is still (one of) my favourite Technic model but I do think Mahj overreacts this a bit. I understand there is a huge effort in this model (and not just in the design, but the whole life cycle of this "product"), but it's your hobby after all. I don't see how some jerk selling your stuff will hurt you significantly. Everybody that is somewhat into Technic knows perfectly well that this is YOUR design. I don't believe that you loose much income either.

[TC6] Hot Rod Wrecker [WIP]
Lipko replied to Lipko's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Here are some "renders" of the internals (I'm using LDD and most PF elements are still not modelled for some whatever reason, that's why the place-holder motors.): I'm a bit surprised that the model is only made of about 1300 bricks. Looks like I do improve and make more and more efficient models. -

Technic General Discussion

That smaller crane is just beautiful. I want to hug it. -
Yes, if you placed on the top of the stairs then kicked it down. It roll quite poorly though... Anyway, my mistake. I meant models that have remote controlled driving functions, but the driving is not shown on the video. We have some of those entries and I wonder if it's just a video mistake (forgetting to film that) or the model is not able to drive on its own. Not driving is just an example. Okay, this may be an inapropriate voting method because most entries do work, but I'll see. I have to look through all videos again and again. By the way, maybe contestant shouldn't be allowed to vote, especially guys like me who are only in it for the money

Models that don't roll for example. Sorry that I want to make a decision based on looking into the models in depth and I don't want to judge just by a first impression.
-
I will vote to entries that work properly and this is proved properly and look good. I prefer fewer but more reliable functions and compactness to big and complicated models. I still haven't finished watching all videos, but I want to do it twice.

I think there was plenty time for this contest, the deadline was there from the very beginning. Sure, I don't have a kid, but I do have a demanding job, a problematic rent with a problematic land lord, winter holidays etc and I build slowly as a snail, etc. Only could start in January, I didn't have a model at stock that I only had to modify to fit the contest. By the way I simply set the deadline one week before the actual deadline, and scheduled the previous weekend (7th 8th of Feb.) to take all pictures and shoot the video (as I don't have a video camera and a well lit place to shoot pictures).

Tiger 2 / King Tiger

Beautiful And I agree with the scale thing. That's why my models have so few features... -
I think efficiency is equally important to power and weight. We saw supercars with okay theoretical power to weight ratio, yet they could hardly crawl.
