Yeah, the reuse of that same Spider-man almost always hurts what I think of the sets. It is a pretty awful variation and surprisingly isn't even a good match for USM. I mean having watched a couple of episodes I can say that the colors shouldn't be that bright. Just changing the blue to a different shade would be a vast improvement. And honestly even the webbing and eyes don't match the cartoon that well. I mean it sucks even as a representation of that costume. And it's weird that this is pretty much the only character in this theme that is literally the same each time he appears. Honestly if they don't change him next year I might just not buy any more Spider-man sets (At this point I'm almost exclusively buying them for the villains).

I kind of hope we do get another MF. Granted I would only buy it if they included an interior. Honestly while the original looked great, the fact that it had little play value sort of hurt it for me.

I agree the Spider Trike is 100% pointless, but I somewhat disagree about the helicopter. Don't get me wrong the color scheme is terrible and the build rather underwhelming. But I actually think it's somewhat practical for certain situations. It would be useful in areas where there's not many places to swing from. And I think it's sort of a reasonable vehicle to have in the GG chase that's being portrayed in the set. I mean if the Green Goblin flew above the buildings then there wouldn't really be a way to catch him. And I suppose Spider-man can only swing so fast, so a vehicle might be needed to catch the Goblin on his glider. Again it's only really helpful in a few situations, but at least it can make sense in the context of the set. It would have been much better if it conformed to the Shield color scheme though.

I'm not referring to his current state in the comics, I'm referring to his current portrayal in media. Regardless of the state of the character DC maintains a certain image associated with the character.

That's true. But it is still consistent with how DC is currently portraying the character. That's what I'm trying to say, DC decides how they want to portray their characters for the year and hands out their standards to the merchandisers.

I didn't say they were only pulling from the New 52 designs. All I said is that DC picks how they want characters portrayed for the year. Each year the designs change, DC draws from different sources, mostly drawing from what's popular or what they expect to be popular. For instance the first year was almost solely classic comic designs (Nostalgia based characters essentially). The second year drew heavily upon movies and games (Catering heavily to the Arkham fans). And this year they're giving us mostly New 52 stuff (Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, Flash) and of course the BTB version of Batman. And the New 52 version of Flash is only slightly different from classic Flash to begin with, really it was only a tweak from his normal design (Reshaping of the lightning bolts essentially). So recognition wasn't a factor either way for him. DC changes they're approach each year. Truthfully Marvel has the advantage because they've built a more consistent line. Most of their line is either movie or TV based (And the TV shows draw heavy inspiration from the movies to begin with). Even the couple of comic sets they've given us are loosely inspired by movies. It comes down to their focus remains the same because they're always pumping out the same style of stuff. This is part of the reason why DC has a problem going beyond Batman. They don't have a solid media portrayal currently, they're movies and TV shows are all in different universes and vary greatly in style. I'm sure when they've firmly established the movie universe we'll see more consistency in their designs, until then I predict they'll keep jumping between whatever is popular. The New 52 has managed to gain some steam since its start, so it's not surprising that they've tailored it to those versions this year.

They space them out on purpose. I'm sure each year DC has one particular version they want to push (Like the BTB version, however they miscalculated how popular that show would be) and that's why the others are either recolors or one shot variations that serve no point (scuba and white Batman are interesting, but outside of a few situations they're pretty pointless). I'm sure with the movie pushed back they'll use the New 52 version to headline the theme for next year.

I'll admit I was a little embarrassed to be buying Friends sets in store, but after the first time I got over it. I know why I'm buying it and if other people don't understand than that's their own hangup. And most people probably aren't going to question it, and I'd say that the people who do notice will think you're buying it for someone else (I've been mistaken as a parent before, so I get the impression some people just think I'm buying toys for some imaginary kid I don't have). Honestly if you just walk confidently, head held high, than most people won't think much anything about you.

You're right about that. I recall back when the theme started that it was revealed that DC gives Lego a set of characters and specific art that they can base them off of. So Lego can't just pick and choose what they like (If they could I'm willing to bet this theme would look considerably different). In fact almost all the DC minifigures seem to come from a specific version of the character (With a few exceptions).

Thank you for the explanation. I was a bit confused on that because it seemed like every time I saw a new 52 Flash the lines were different or not there at all. It is too bad Lego didn't opt for arm and leg printing here, they could have balanced the red and yellow better.

I feel like that's a detail that either wouldn't have looked good or would have looked confusing (I'm always unsure what the excessive lines in the new 52 designs are really supposed to represent). I feel like there's always a few details that ultimately don't make the cut simply because it becomes too much. What defines it as new 52 to me is the head and mask. The lightning bolts on the mask are noticeably different than classic Flash (Particularly the shape of the lightning bolts is the giveaway here) and the printing around the chin is more similar to the new 52 version with part of the mask overlapping onto the chin (Which it did not with classic Flash). The details are small, but they seem very new 52 to me. And the Flash variant in Lego Batman 2 looks much more like classic Flash than this minifigure did. It's also possible that Lego drew from several sources for their design, as it seems sometimes they do.

Actually I think he's the new 52 version. The insignia on the torso features yellow around the circle and the lightning bolts on his mask are consistent with his new look. However Lego Batman 2 features the classic design.

Of course not, nobody said it did. But in story continuity is important too. So at the end of the day though both statements were true, publication date said Betty, DC canon said Barbara. You can have it both ways, so hooray! I think ultimately I'd prefer Stephanie Browns first minifigure appearance to be Spoiler. I would rather she get a unique persona rather than be just another Batgirl. That was my problem with the Tim Drake Robin we got, he's my favorite version of Robin, but ultimately many people can't even tell him apart from from the other Robin variations we've gotten. He just ended up being another Robin variation. Red Robin would have been more unique.

You're both right technically. Betty Kane was the first version of Batgirl created for the comics, however thanks to changes in continuity her Batgirl persona was erased and replaced with Flamebird. So history was rewritten so that Barbara Gordon was the first Batgirl after all. Though in the few seconds it took me to type this they might have changed the continuity again. I think Lego ultimately gave us the Barbara Gordon version of Batgirl because she's the most well known (She's had a lot of TV exposure, so she is admittedly the most recognizable Batgirl). And I assume just like they did with the Robin minifigures we'll see a new version every so often. So I'd think Stephanie Brown will appear eventually (I mean we have three different Robins, I can only assume one day we'll have that many Batgirl's).

It's not really the same style, it has similarities, but ultimately they're different. Particularly because they each are emulating different artists. Notably the Rebels characters look to be proportioned more realistically and textured much differently. The faces in particular aren't styled anything like the CW characters who all had overly defined features, head shapes and eye shapes. I think ultimately Lego made the right choice here, I think what they came up with matches the characters pretty perfectly. And being that they were less anime looking I don't think the CW style of head would have really matched the Rebels style that well. I could understand the stylized minifigures for the big eyed CW designs, but for Rebels I just don't see the need.
-
I'm not against the concept of the anime faces in itself, but for me they rarely ever looked that good. Perhaps a different style for the eyes could have made it work, but ultimately I just couldn't get used to those faces. And honestly the fact that they didn't blend in with any of the other minifigures made it hard to like them. I mean I like to be able to reuse minifigure parts and the style just didn't allow that.

He's already taller than a normal person and made of wood, that's pretty imposing to begin with. I'm sure in the movie it makes sense but here it seems like overkill when there's only two villains in the set. I would have preferred a normal sized Groot, but I suppose being mostly brick built actual height can be adjusted. I doubt we'll see this version in a set any time soon or ever. I don't recall any of the previous exclusives making it into a set. Unless they decide to throw him into a comic set I don't see him being included until he makes an appearance in a movie and I don't even think he supposed to be in Batman VS. Superman (Though based on how many characters they're shoving into that movie it's possible). If you want him then this is probably your best opportunity, otherwise you might be waiting a long time.

Yeah I keep on seeing that question repeatedly and I get the impression that some people are referring to why in that situation did Groot get bigger, like an in story reason for why he's using that power. It's less of How and more of Why. Which, by looking at the set it is a little confusing. I mean he seems to be fighting normal sized people, so I don't know why being the height of a building in needed in this situation. Though I'm sure it will make sense when the movie comes out.

They literally stop the movie for a solid minute and solely focus on that SW cameo. Cameos like that are meant to draw a lot of attention, I know people that mentioned the SW cameo before even talking about the rest of the movie. And of course it's animated and not real plastic, that doesn't make a difference. If indeed it means nothing then why create a new design when the old one still looks good? Why have Lando be the new design when the other SW minifigures are old variations? It's just some idle speculation on whether or not Lego intended this as a tease for something new. I think it could be, but it's just as likely it isn't.
-
That's not what I meant. I just meant that usually Lego will reuse designs if they can, it would be odd and almost out of character to redesign a character, give them the spotlight, and then not use that design ever again. And I highly doubt Lego updated the minifigure solely for a cameo. Other than his eyes the design was still solid, even by today's standards. And this wouldn't be the first time that Lego has teased a design before revealing an official set.
-
Well it's based off the same costume so it should look almost the same, just slightly updated to match the current style. It's new, but it's a minor update (Like most SW minifigures). I think it's possible that this design will appear in the future, probably not this year, but maybe next. Plus he could be an exclusive or he might be put in a set randomly (like celebration Leia and Padme). I don't see Lego wasting the design just because they don't have a set for him right now, they'll probably use it eventually.
-
They might as well have made Groot a bigfig since his torso and head is a special piece anyway (Honestly the brick built arms and legs don't look right paired with that piece). I'm not sure I like how he turned out, I suppose better images might change my mind. He definitely looks too big though. Rocket is great though, a pleasant surprise for sure.

It looked new to me, though I'm not completely sure. I think there's a good chance of him appearing in a set some time soon. I feel like a remake of the cloud city set is pretty likely. We're getting a remake of the cantina this year, so I think a remake of cloud city couldn't be that far off.

I don't know about that. It looks like the Mutt Williams hairpiece to me, just in a new color.
