  1. I was considering converting the top 'Armory' section into a Throneroom. Looking at some of these video reviews now, it looks like that might be more difficult since it looks like that section is 'outdoors' when you close up the castle. It also looks like the main Gate comes up into that floor, behind where I'd put the Throne, so it'd be kind of awkward to have. I'm starting to wonder if I might have to add an entire new section there instead.
  2. I'm already thinking about custom knight minis to represent some of those shields. Maybe I'll use some old classic Space dudes for their Classic torso and leg colors, and slap some armor and helmets over em to cover any insignias. Tournament Knight's colors would actually match well with the cross axes. Now I need to find a tournament knight...
  3. Loving all the reviews, so much more information now. Great little second wind for this thread :D
  4. That old poll has some surprising results. Forestmen are quite low on the poll and quite a few people voted on Kingdoms Lions.
  5. These builds are great! I might actually consider making something up like this for a Heroica sized town!
  6. I guess I lucked out that most of those were in production during my dark ages. I think the only real broken pieces in my collection are the mostly transparent bricks and windshields from Classic era Space. Those are really brittle when stored with other bricks. Other than that, it'd be the odd broken clip or cracked torso.
  7. Hard to categorize since my preferences and tastes change over time, but here goes: S Tier : Forestmen. I only ever had the minifigures and a couple wagons from the 80's, but I loved em as a kid. I later had a couple Dark Forest sets that I worked them all into. Forestmen were just awesome, having a wide variety of torsos instead of the same basic emblem-on-chest we had with Crusaders and Black Falcons. For whatever reason, I had more forestmen figures than most of my other factions. A Tier : Black Knights, Black Falcons. Knights Stronghold was the biggest 'Castle' set I had as a kid early on, while I had plenty of other smaller Black Knight and Black Falcon sets to build up a mini army to accompany it. I love the design of the Black Knight wyvern shields, and to me they are what I still see as the epitome of Castle themes. It's just a shame I never had a chance to get Black Monarch's Castle (my white whale) or Black Knight's Castle. B Tier : Dragon Masters, Wolfpack. These themes were very memorable to me, but they always filled a gap more than ever had a place as a 'mainstay' Castle theme. My cousin had Wolfpack Tower (which I eventually traded my Pirate sets to him for) and I had the Dragon Wagon and Majisto's Magic Workshop, and these are some of the more iconic sets in the series. I'd say they're only in B-tier only because I never had a large amount of these guys to really make use of a 'faction war' the way I had Forestmen, Black Knights and Black Falcons. C Tier : Royal Knights, Fright Knights, Crusaders. It's kinda tough putting these all in C-Tier when I actually have a very strong appreciation for these themes, but they came when I was getting into High School and beginning my Dark Ages. Crusaders came a bit too early in my collection, so I only have like 3 soldier dudes that I never really knew what to do with. Royal Knights I bought the King and the Skeleton ambush, otherwise I wasn't big on the other sets. I loved the crown and shiny sword they introduced, and the skeletons are a staple to the series now. Fright Knights are in the same boat; they introduced lots of new parts and pieces but overall the theme came a little too late. Oddly enough, when I got back into Lego in the last couple years Royal Knights and Fright Knights were the armies I revisited most in my collection. Mostly because vintage Black Knight and Forestmen collecting is crazy pricy though. Everything else is kind of supplementary to me. I have bits and pieces from many other Castle themes, but mostly to supplement the core 80's-90's Castle sets I have. All of my Fantasy era skeletons and dark wizards support my Fright Knights, all the Crown Knights support the Royal Knights, all the Dwarves are present in mines underneath my Castle mocs. I don't really collect those sets for their own themes, so hard for me to place them anywhere in a ranking system. Same goes with LOTR, Harry Potter, Nexo Knights or anything else that fits the broader 'Fantasy' category. I will say that I have a much stronger appreciation for Crusaders now that I'm able to fill in some gaps in my collection. I don't know how I came across it, but I have one of the Crusader bardings, and it's probably one of my favourite pieces in my entire Castle collection. Honestly looking forward to the Lion Knight's Castle to build up a Lion Knights army that I never had before.
  8. Yeah, they do it a lot in the TV shows too. In the seasons of Ninjago that I worked on, they brought back Clutch Powers, and threw in an easter egg with some Beaver dudes from Chima into an episode.
  9. I was disappointed they didn't use more names in their themes. The Royal Knights' King never got a proper name to my knowledge, yet they named Majisto in the prior theme and Basil and Willa in the theme that came after. Always felt odd to me that the King didn't get one.
  10. It's weird that the designers wanted to keep that secret, when the secret area is also shown on the official box art (bottom left corner)
  11. True enough. They also had different localized names of factions and sets. I think I grew up with them being called 'Lion Crest' and 'Eagle Crest', and only adopted the more recent Crusaders and Black Falcons after getting into the online Lego community. -Looking it up, seems like these names were specifically used in Canada and Australia. Makes sense why, as a kid, I was so confused from lego sets I got from the States that had differently named factions in catalogues from the same year.
  12. Just to clarify, I wasn't intending to buy the new-in-box sets, rather talking about 2020+ new brown pieces that matched the same type of the ones back then instead of say using Bricklink, which might be a dice roll since they don't categorize the specific dates of when certain brown pieces were made or specifically from what sets. Was more curious if the brown breaking issue was still a thing today. But thanks for the clarification, seems like it was just a problem from a certain period of time. I'll have to be more careful with my Dark Red pieces from Castle 2004.
  13. Question about brown pieces, as I never had any of mine break (most from the 90's), was this an issue only during a certain time or does it still happen with new brown parts? I've always considered ordering bricklink pieces to build my own version of MMV/MVR, but was wondering if it'd be better to go with all new parts and go direct with BAP orders.
  14. My only real issue with Creator 3-in-1 is that they're built around Lego Classic design goals. Everything is brick built, so no special molds for animals. They incorporate pieces of every primary color to meet a 'color variety' status quo. And of course the lack of minifigure customizations and themed accessories, like banners and bardings. They're great for supplementing parts when you need a lot of extra masonry pieces or roof slopes or brown arches, but they don't really fill the niche of a themed set. To me it's about the same as ordering bags of Bricks and Pieces parts, or sifting through what you need out of a Lego Classic box.
  15. Love the little details here! The Dwarf statues holding the flames are a real cool touch. The bathing Dwarves are funny too!
  16. I don't know how all you guys are getting full animals out of the pick a brick wall. I've never seen that in any of my local Lego stores here. It's always odds and ends bricks of random colors that I would never be able to find a use for, lol.
  17. I like this build, it's very fun and hits all the nostalgia notes. I could see having a bunch of these buildings and recreating the old Lego promo pamphlet dioramas These might be good sized buildings for Heroica too.
  18. To be honest, I wouldn't try and overthink it. I think they're intentionally keeping things intentionally vague for PC reasons, like 'Forest Hideout' instead of the original 'Forestmen's Hideout'. You make a good point that they could have used 'Monarch' in the name though, I think that would have worked fine too. Though if they did that, I would expect a Throneroom to be included :P
  19. You know, this hits a really strong point. I think Lego's strong point was in creating a world. They had solid building designs, but the concept of their new themes were always the bigger draw to me as a kid, and I would buy sets that looked awful if it meant getting that one or two pieces that helped expand the world I was building. I often wonder what new themes for Classic Castle (90's era) could be. CMF certainly helps expand on that.
  20. I think that's fine as a solution. For me, it's just a matter of discussing on curiosity and principle more than anything. Ideally, I'd like to see consistency in scales so they would all reasonably look well when displayed together in a massive diorama. Maybe something like the Lego promotional pamphlets; or the Lego Back to the Future where we see a massive castle displayed alongside the regular castle sets. I'm always interested in how Lego scales their Star Wars sets, and they don't seem to have any particular consistent standard for scales. Like there's been a number of different AT-ATs over the years and they're all different sizes to each other, with the latest UCS one being the biggest and towering over everything else. The newest one is probably the best scale so far, and the old Snowspeeders are much better scale for display underneath their legs. I just think it's interesting to see size differences and seeing how they compare, and seeing how well they fit displayed together.
  21. These are the ones I have set up in my apartment right now. Not much room, so I have to squeeze my dioramas into whatever space fits. If I had the room, I would definitely space them out and not have all the minifigs so cramped in every display. And this is right behind me in the apartment that I'm currently in. We make due with what little space we can afford :P.
  22. To be honest, I can't really remember. I buy a lot of 2nd hand stuff off Facebook Marketplace, so it could possibly be a random head in a collection of heads that I got that looked like it would fit on that dude better. Looking at it right now, I can't put a finger on what exactly that head is from. I'll have to do some digging. -edit- Found it. It was actually from a set I bought! It's one of the random mooks from the Ninjago Movie Green Dragon Mech set
  23. That set is very awesome! I was lucky to snag one when it was on clearance at Walmart. I initially had no real plans for that set, but I got it just because it was cheap. Once I built it, I realized it had some really good parts to it. I used the wings as part of a throne for the Batlord.
  24. The figures themselves aren't expensive, like the Black Falcon Torso and Legs together are literally $2CAD on Bricks and Pieces It gets dubious when I look at them shipping out Vidyo products for $24 for one figure. Granted it has some new molds and parts to them that aren't just a torso and legs, but the price disparity makes very little sense to me. Even on discount at $17, Vidyo is abnormally overpriced for its parts. That's the thing though... they don't even need warehouses to store that stuff. They still have the molds. Since they have full control of supply and demand, they could literally 'print money' by releasing new prints directly into the secondary market. I mean, wasn't it like in 2016 when we got a re-release of the Lion Knight in a GWP set, in all its classic glory? They probably just brought back the old print into production to do that. That figure goes for quite a bit today, even as a reprint.
