A shame we no longer have Target here in Canada. All 3 options look pretty good. -

There's a Castle themed Mickey set that looks like it might have some useful torso and leg pieces. -
10305 Lion Knights' Castle 90th anniversary set

I really like that new Black Falcon torso... but why red? Their whole color scheme is Black, White and Blue. Either way, the front print will work for a lot of new soldier variations.- 2,976 replies

Love the build!

I was mostly talking about fantasy series aimed at kids. GoT and LOTR are popular, but still generally aimed more at adults. Kids gravitate more around the Ninjago and Harry Potter series from what I've seen. Zelda is also more of a 80's nostalgic series. Even with the success of Breath of the Wild and Zelda's continued existence in popular mainstream, it doesn't have the kid-appeal. Kids recognize the franchise, but relatively have little attachment to it compared to games like Minecraft or Mario. The popular fantasy series we have today that aren't Harry Potter are mostly aimed at adults. LOTR, GoT, Witcher, Zelda, even Warcraft and Skyrim. I can see them doing one-off Ideas sets or limited runs based on these franchises, which is about the same with what they're already doing with Castle.

Well, the thing is Castles and Fantasy in general is not as appealing to kids as say in the 80's and 90's. What appeals to kids today is a different type of 'fantasy'. Knights and Castles are not regarded in the same way as it used to be, when the myths of King Arthur or Robin Hood were well recognized and understood as a mainstream folk tale. Today, modern fantasy revolves around Superheroes. And for the fantasy genre, it's Harry Potter. It's how pop culture and mainstream has progressed. Harry Potter has mostly filled the gaps that Castle left behind.

I missed out on a lot of big castle sets on account of being too young at the time. By the time I could get a large castle set, it happened to be the Fright Knights Witch's Magical Manor, which was probably the least Castle-looking set ever haha. Most of my collection was minifigure focused, on the original battle packs, bonus packs and small-to-medium sized sets. The closest thing I had to an actual castle was Knight's Stronghold. It's interesting to hear that the other sets don't really sell well outside of the big castle sets. I never would have realized that since I've only ever collected the smaller packs. I'm super happy that they're making a big castle set now though. My Crusaders and Black Falcons have been waiting for a very long time for this!

10305 Lion Knights' Castle 90th anniversary set
Triceron replied to R0Sch's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I liked the idea of Knights Kingdom 2 having different knights of different emblems, but I expected more Knights of the Round table while they went Ninja Power Rangers. I'm a sucker for the new shields and knights of the CMF series, and those make sense to me. A Bear shield, a Crow shield, a Tree emblem, even the odd Snowflake all makes sense. But I'll never understand why they choose a Monkey for Knights Kingdom. The emblem looks so off for any fantasy setting.- 2,976 replies

10305 Lion Knights' Castle 90th anniversary set
Triceron replied to R0Sch's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Cedric the Bull came in an unfortunate time. A little too late after the whole Ninja theme made a clear separation from them and the Castle sets of the 80's-90's. I'd definitely entered my Dark Ages by the time Ninja theme came around. I personally don't consider Knights Kingdom to be part of the classic Castle theme of the 90's, but that's just me. I ended up getting a couple aftermarket figures for my collection, but I don't hold any nostalgia for them at all. Jellybeans I'm guessing you're talking about the colorful bunch in Knights Kingdom 2? I personally hope this castle just stays a 90's era Castle and keep those subthemes out. Nothing against them personally but they're a bit out of place with the Crusaders, Black Falcons and Forestmen of old. I'd prefer more room open for Forestmen, new peasants/merchants, and Wolfpack as you mentioned. I wouldn't mind if the other subthemes get some recognition through easter eggs, like how Barracuda Bay has tons of little references to the wider Pirates line. But nothing as far as the reference to everything Lego. I get that this is a 90th anniversary celebration, but I'm with you in feeling it'd would get diluted by throwing all that stuff in. I mean, we already have those kind of references in other modern themed sets, like the mini Lego store in Monkie Kid City of Lanterns, or the references that pop up ever so often in Ninjago like return of Clutch Powers.- 2,976 replies

I really hope it doesn't have skeletons. They're so cheap and readily available, and I'd hate for them to count towards their 'minifigure' budget. I mean you even get 2 Skeletons in the Monkie Kid underwater polybag.- 2,976 replies

Have there been many $350 kids sets? Just curious. I'm hoping for an AFOL targetted set, considering we're talking about sets from the 80's and 90's.- 2,976 replies

That's a good point. At that price point, it'll probably be doubtful that it's just creator-level builds, and be aimed at adults. I'm really hoping it will be like a Barracuda's Bay for Castle, a loveletter to Castle fans full of references to all Castle themes over the years. The details on BBay were absolutely fabulous, from the half-sunken Islanders statue to the touches of gray on the Pirate captain's hair and beard. I'd say I'd probably be happier with the way they have it now and throwing us a new major Castle set every one or two years rather than create a new theme that's ultimately going to be aimed at kids like they did with Nexo Knights, or how Ninjago's new line is a mix of 4+ sets. It'll be easier on my wallet in the long run, and as long as they continue the trend of providing new Fantasy-themed minifigures in CMF, I'm happy.

10305 Lion Knights' Castle 90th anniversary set
Triceron replied to R0Sch's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I think the closest thing we probably have would probably be the Cornish Pixies from Harry Potter, though they look more like mischevious sprites than a wish-granting fairy There might be something from the Lego Elves line too as a fill in, but it looks like they have more pet-like creatures than actual fairies. I'd been using some of the Harry Potter sets to fill in my Castle/Fantasy armies. The Dementors with a swapped head make great Wraiths, I have Aragog as a base for a Drider, and I have Buckbeak, a Thestral, and Harry's Patronus as mythical beast mounts. I was happy that they did a Centaur for CMF series, I wish they did much more for expanding fantasy lego outside liscenced sets.- 2,976 replies

10305 Lion Knights' Castle 90th anniversary set
Triceron replied to R0Sch's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I got that set back on Black Friday. Amazon had a delivery error so I happened to get two copies. But I do find the price of Flower Fruit Mountain to be too high normal price. I was also a bit disappointed with the figure selection when I realized 4 of the Monkeys were just different versions of Monkey King. Otherwise it looks like a fantastic set, and I can't wait to build it. I just need to find the time and space for it I think the CMF series are doing really well supplementing different fantasy characters. I've got a couple Goblins, Dwarves, and I've been considering picking up some fairy wings on Bricklink or Build-a-Minifigure for a custom fairy for my Forestmen set. Personally, I'd only want a dragon only if it were a figure. I wasn't a big fan of the Brickbuilt one from the Creator castle, and I think those pieces could have been put to better use elsewhere.- 2,976 replies

You would have to modify the models and print them out in pieces, just as lego does. Cut out the right size holes so you can fit a peg in, etc. Depending on the printer you have, you'd probably still need to put some work into it to polish it up and get all the pieces working together. It's just a shame that this figure hasn't even been made into a custom fig by some knockoff brand.

I think the most exciting part of this is the potential re-release of new Crusader and Forestmen minifigures. Hopefully they would be purchaseable like the new Black Falcons, and we can start army building again. Finding old sets is increasingly costly.- 2,976 replies

Oh wow, that's a huge potential resource for minis we never got. One of the ones I really wanted Lego to make was Ursa Major. He would be a great model for a 'Werebear' or Druid character. I always imagined a wildman/berserker faction under a 'Bear Clan'

Ooh, this sounds interesting to me. I hope it's fantasy creature related. But I have to say I'm probably more a minifig-scale creature collector than I am for any brick-built creature sets. I do enjoy some of the Ninjago Dragons they've released over the years though. Skull Dragon and Lloyd's Green Dragon from the movie are pretty awesome builds.

10305 Lion Knights' Castle 90th anniversary set
Triceron replied to R0Sch's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I think I agree with many people here that the Castle in the promo video, while cool, is a bit lackluster as a $350 build. The details are just not there, and it looks more like a slightly updated 3x scale Creator Medieval Castle with Lion shields more than anything. I mean, I think that's possible, but I'd much prefer something more detailed. That castle is really big too, like a lot of bricks being used just to make super high flat walls. It would be neat if this was a first look at something we might be getting, but I'm holding out hope for something more detailed. I initially bought the Medieval Castle creator set, but returned it and got the Blacksmith instead, the details of the build were a no brainer after I took a good at the two. I really hope I don't have to make that decision between getting the Lion's castle or just getting 3x Medieval Castles for the same price point.- 2,976 replies

I'm reaaally hoping it's 20+ figures at this price point. Even a liscenced Marvel set like Daily Planet Bugle managed to get 25 figures. 15 would be criminal.- 2,976 replies

I'm really hoping they stick with the classic Crusaders style lion emblems, in both yellow and blue. They've done so many lion emblems over the years, but that one would fit alongside the recent Black Falcon updates the best. Would be great if we got new Forestmen as well!- 2,976 replies

Triceron replied to R0Sch's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I've been slowly collecting a bigger Crusaders army, finding any shields or minifigures wherever I can. I've even gotten a couple of the more recent 2019 Lion/Key shields that were available at the Lego Store. I've expanded my army quite a bit to about 10 soldiers and a handful of knights. I can't wait to see what they have in store for the Castle, because my army could use a castle to defend!- 2,976 replies
