  1. Ooh. Would a spare pieces version look as good as a spare pieces UCS Millennium Falcon, I wonder? No, probably not. But colourful pillars might be cool. The Rainbow Knights Castle, with a new leader installed?
  2. I agree that it's good for a $200/$250 set. It reflects the source material pretty accurately. But to achieve that, it's smaller than a 'true' minifigure scale version would be, with four full floors, and full sized windows. If you did that, it would have to be at least 50% larger, if not more, and that would probably double the cost. The gains that you would get from doubling the cost would be minimal, so I think they've got the balance right as a set. I just keep getting drawn to those different scales when next to the other modulars. One day, maybe, if I can, I'd like to try and combine two sets to make a modular/minifigure scale version.
  3. I think it's a great building/model, and I have one on the way. It will also display week next to a bunch of the modulars. I just don't think it's the same scale. I find the modular scale, and minifig scale in general, an interesting thing to observe. And how LEGO especially tend to give the impression of something, while, usually, minimizing the number of bricks or volume needed to achieve it. It's very elegant.
  4. There are plenty of things they make up as large models and have in artworks that they don't sell. But in this case it's clearly a prime candidate for a product that would fly off the shelves - with both wizards and muggles alike. Still, learnt many times not to get hopes up too much based on this kind of thing.
  5. Make sense + LEGO is probably in the top 10 of oxymorons though...
  6. I'd love that to be the case, but you could also, very convincingly, argue that as it's all set in London, and a huge tourist attraction in London, in a store that will also be a huge tourist attraction in London, they are catering to their target market very well, and nothing more.
  7. Maybe they're gearing up to put a pin connector there, for a flower piece?
  8. Does anyone have an idea if this will be exclusive, or go on general release? I've not seen anything either way. I know it will be a while before general release, if it does at all.
  9. Just to throw some love into the thread, I popped into a LEGO Store this afternoon to find 1x2 trans light blue tiles on the wall. I bought all of them. It was only 2.5 large cups (about 3850 based on weighing 100 of them). I felt a bit bad clearing them out, but I've been wanting to make a canal for ages, and didn't fancy buying them on Bricklink or the PAB website, as they're pretty expensive. I'm so pleased!
  10. The Brickset review has it next to the Boutique Hotel too - Modular Sanctum Sanctorum! It will look good on your city diorama! | Brickset: LEGO set guide and database Definitely smacks of being too small a scale compared to the other modulars. The grill pieces as balconies are another good demonstration of this. But the windows on the Sanctum Santorum should probably be about the size as the ones on the Boutique Hotel to make it the same kind of scale. Which probably means increasing it by about 50%. Doubling it might be a bit too much though.
  11. I'm very pleased it was this way round though. For a castle to be impressive, it probably needs to have mass. They already have a $100 castle in production, so we know what it would be like in terms of scale and scope. You either make it more detailed and smaller (which would be cool, but leave you wanting so much more), or do something castle-related, like the blacksmith, but it would be smaller than the blacksmith and so again, probably leave you wanting. Maybe a wizards tower would work? Or a fortified bridge? But it's somewhat niche in comparison with a full-on castle. For space on the other hand, you have what is probably the ultimate space set that's brilliantly executed for $100. If you spent more, you wouldn't get a bigger spaceship - it would be too much. You'd just get more, like some extra craft, or maybe a moon base, or some ground buggies. And while those would be cool (and would also have been great candidates for a GWP), none of them really grab you as being must haves. For me, they've got it spot on. Both sets are perfectly formed and capture the attention and imagination of buyers/builders. None of which is to say that they couldn't build on these with more from the range in the next year or two...
  12. It needs two boxes - one per variant. There is a list a page or so back that gives you all the parts needed to build all three models. With two boxes, it's about $50 of parts (if you need to order all of them) to make all three. If you have your own parts, it might be worth ordering a few more. If not, it's probably worth buying three boxes.
  13. Typically, all FedEx parcels to me arrive a day later than claimed. It's rare that they come on-time. In some instances they get very delayed, but not often. In a few cases recently, from LEGO, I had a delivery notification, saying it had been delivered. But to an address in another state! I left it a day, just in case, and then, miraculously, it turned up at my house the following day (or two). However, I generally find that the packages are in good condition for me. It's just the timing that is inaccurate. I'm also generally not put out by it, I just find it odd that it's consistently wrong.
  14. I agree. It's too small. The scale is wrong and it probably needs to be 30-50% larger. The fact that it looks like a four storey building, but it's the same height as the three storey modular demonstrates that too. And by increasing the size, you'd get the detail. That's an advantage of a modular vs a model if a 'real' place. You can do things to get the scale right, while at other times make it too small, but in ways you don't notice as much.
  15. OMG! I'd pay that just for that glorious torso. The way the light shines off the blue is mesmerizing. Uninterrupted by any form of decoration. You might even call it vantablue. Absolute steal for the lucky winner of that auction.
  16. It was early access on September 17. General release October 1.
  17. I don't often get to go to WalMart, but did yesterday, and found the 31120 castle for $80. Deliberated a bit and got it, hoping that there are some good options for extensions to the 10305 castle using the pieces.
  18. Loving the precision of this community. Loving the precision on precision of this community.
  19. Nice. We've just moved house and there are a few places with no/poor light where these will be perfect. We have the bouquet and birds of paradise, but not built yet. Looking forward to them. Also means that I can have some nice sets around the house and keep the likes of the modulars and the castle in my home office.
  20. That's what I'm here for. Really looking forward to seeing all the alternatives and expansions. Snap! I got the same thing this morning.
  21. That can often mean exclusive for only three months, and then it moves to either hard to find, and so only available at a small number of retailers e.g Target, or it goes on general release. No idea whether this will stay exclusive though. The 10497 Galaxy Explorer isn't, so maybe it will become more widely available? There are some dark grey legs with black dual moulded boots that I've usually seen paired with the torsos on pre-built ones. Those are what I've chosen for mine.
  22. I'm also going to hold off getting the castle. I will very likely 'only' get one, and want to wait to see if there is a special GWP in the future at some point. Or wait for a double VIP. Or get one of the cool GWP in the future. The Ray the Castaway one should be coming soon. Plus, I have the Castle in the Forest to build yet. Hoping to do that soon though.
  23. I'm impressed, but also sad, that the castle's availability has lasted longer than the Forestmen GWP. Although you could also say, cynically, that the point of a GWP is to get people to buy more LEGO that they wouldn't otherwise get, which it did very well in June. Releasing it on August 3 to match the castle likely wouldn't push people over the edge to buy it. But doing it in a few months time might. No idea why they thought an August 1 release was a good idea though. Everyone's favourite - the bathtub stunt bike - is out of stock already, however!
