Liberation from the nazi-fascist regime
TheLegoDr replied to oirad 72's topic in Special LEGO Themes
This is a great build. It is a sad time in our world history, but you've recreated it beautifully here. The buildings look great. I like the sand green roofing and the stone work. That farthest right tree (nearest the bridge) looks great. It looks like it was built simply enough, but the after effect is very . I may have to copy that style for my castle MOCs. -
I have no prior knowledge of how these should look. I've never been near one. But this in LEGO form is awesome. I love the lift doors, the ticket window, even the flooring adds a lot to it. I can easily picture this in real life. I was considering doing my Modular sidewalk like that too. I ordered a whole bunch of 1x2 and 2x2 dark bley tiles to see if I prefer the more cobblestone look or larger stone look. I'd like it if LEGO released more of the classic smiley in licensed skin tone.

^How deep are those boxes? Do they all come with individual compartments like that? That looks like a perfect solution for how I sort. I'm going to have to look into these. Where do you get them?
-
^I was told stores aren't allowed to sell them anymore. Maybe it depends on the store, but I know our local store doesn't sell them to customers anymore. I thought it was a corporate decision.

Bricks and Pieces Interesting Pricing
TheLegoDr replied to JGW3000's topic in General LEGO Discussion
^go to Lego.com and scroll to the bottom. Click on missing parts under Customer Service Enter your information Click I want to buy a piece Click on Bricks and Pieces Selection You input the set/part numbers and click on pieces you want. Submit your order then they come back with the price totals and you call them to pay over the phone. I do it all the time. I probably do it more than bricklink orders. I prefer getting the pieces direct from the company instead of resellers. -
^Even if they do have the rare pieces, they could still be a copy. Most people won't be able to tell the difference between the original pieces and the new versions (like type 1 of the large windows or the 1x2 panels with/without side supports). Some things are pretty similar. I think maybe the new dark blue arch that came with the winter village set is a slightly different mold. It has more support underneath. I don't have the original so I can't compare, but I do have the newer version. I do agree about setting up a wantlist and try to buy as much as you can for a reasonable price from fewer sellers than a few cheap pieces from lots of sellers. The downside, sometimes pieces may be cheap at a few places and not others and then they skyrocket in price and you miss out on a good deal altogether. The 2x4 windows on the top floor were really cheap when I got them through LEGO, but I believe they have since been discontinued. Now I bought them probably in 2012 without really thinking. Personally now, I'd modify them to use the regular 1x3x4 windows to blend in with the rest of the line. To follow with what was said earlier, I have a colleague in my LUG that was selling the 2x4 windows from some new princess set for as much as the originals were selling for, even though they are a different mold. As in, he was claiming they were the original mold and people were buying them thinking that, but when I told him it was a different mold he changed it in the system and started making a lot less money. The downside is, the people who bought it for a high dollar amount thinking it was original got duped, but they don't necessarily know they got duped. Outside of buying some new in box from a LEGO store or Online, you can't be 100% certain it is legit.

I'll have to wait to watch the video, but those always make me want to buy the set whether or not I wanted to originally. I ended up getting the VW camper van and the Sopwith Camel after watching the videos even though I had no interest in them originally. The set itself look neat. My daughter will love it. She loves the last winter village set. I don't like the constant rehash of figures in these city sets. Buy a few Winter Village and Modulars and you have all of these figures (minus the sick face). I'm sure I'll get one eventually, but there are too many other exclusives that may sell out first that I need to get.

American LUG Support representative Minifig
TheLegoDr replied to Solscud007's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I knew their business cards were little minifig versions of themselves. That's neat they have licensed or yellow. The head would come in handy in Mocs, that's for sure. Does he just have a huge briefcase to give these out to everyone? -
LEGO Frozen anyone? (Expand the Disney Princess line)
TheLegoDr replied to smittyfan's topic in LEGO Licensed
That's pretty awesome. I can't imagine TLG releasing that much trans blue in one set, but it looks neat. I'd expect probably more medium blue and white with some trans accents or something. Just to give the effect of ice/snow. The princesses are well done. So is Olaf. Although again, I'd probably picture a mold for Olaf similar to the Brave 3 bear brothers (not the same mold, as in they would make a new mold since they made that mold for a one-off part). -
Very well done! I've always wanted to visit there. I like the flag within the shape of the country. Very creative.

I'm not sure, but I've heard of this happening quite a bit. I'd recommend calling them with an order number instead of emailing. You'll get better results. I've waited for over a month before with nothing and when I called them they said that the order was cancelled. Completely unbeknownst to me. Now obviously yours were shipped and are stopped up at a point. Is that strycow due to customs? I'd imagine things can sit in there for a long time before anything happens. I've received overseas orders really quickly (less than a week) and other times they are really long. Sorry for the dental work. That doesn't sound pleasant.

I put in my final order for some extra 1x1 sand blue bricks and then a few other sand blue bricks to finish my interior bathroom for my sand blue grocer. I am very pleased with how it turned out. Once that is finished I'll get some pictures. I also have the front facade finished for my 32 wide straight conversion of Cafe Corner. The name obviously will be different now since it is no longer a corner, but I just wanted something different than the official. I do have all of the pieces to make the original with the substitution of the windows on the second level and the dark blue bricks on the interior. I basically just need some reddish brown bricks to finish out that second level and it will be finished too. Very exciting having these things taken care of. It is actually perfect timing since I've been getting back into Pirate Ship building lately so now I can focus solely on those.

Interesting idea. The brighter colors work pretty well here. So I am to understand you are basically bricklinking the entire set in different colors and no minifigs? That sounds like a high dollar amount for bricklink orders. Would it have been cheaper to just buy the official set and modify that?

Review: 10228 Haunted House
TheLegoDr replied to mostlytechnic's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Personally it makes sense to retire it sooner than later, only because the theme it fell under is also retired and how much interest is there in a Haunted House throughout the year outside of Halloween. I can imagine it was a very good seller for LEGO, but probably not consistent. I'd imagine the supply is running low. I don't see why they would do another production run this late in the game. With that said, it is an awesome set and I would highly recommend it to everyone. I'm not sure how great this is as a parts pack, but sand green isn't exactly cheap, so it might end up being a good deal in the end to buy this set. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I like the idea of more 16x32 buildings, but I don't see LEGO releasing that many in one year. Yes, they may make money on it, but then again they will probably saturate the market and not actually sell as many as they would if they release one per year. I'm multiple Modulars behind, so to release more than one per year would probably mean I'd buy less LEGO elsewhere just to keep up. I don't see that happening. They are releasing those "smaller" modulars in the CITY line. Even though I don't personally think they fit in at all, a lot of people are clamoring for them. Creator Expert is a theme in and of itself. It isn't tied to any one style of build, just something more advanced. The carnival type set would fall into that category, not the Modular category. I'm not sure how this isn't getting through to people?? -
Always interesting to see this again. I'd hate to imagine the dismantling/setting up if you brought it to one of our LUG shows. I like the viewpoint picture from the plane.

Nicely done! I was going to ask my dad to build me some shelves since he is handy at woodworking. I really like the 3rd/4th style for some reason. Maybe it's the stain, but it really jumps out at me. I like that they aren't too deep, although personally I may want something a little deeper/taller so I can accommodate Jabba and Hulk with ease. That's the only tricky part for me since they require extra space than the rest of the figures, it seems kind of silly to have all these wider areas just for 2 figures. Maybe want Cave Troll/Goblin King too, but they are even bigger yet... And I would prefer a glass/plexiglass front door that hinges open to avoid dust on all of the collection. My dad has done that in the past. I'm not sure how easy it would be to accommodate that in your designs though.

I am constantly amazed by how many people haven't experienced broken pieces. I must have the worst luck in LEGO then. That first picture you posted is a common sight in my LEGO room. Even minifigures that aren't connected to anything will be cracked (new minifigures, such as Iron Man or Admiral Ackbar!). One would think it could be the plastic since not all of my pieces are cracked by clutch alone. Many times they are broken right out of the box. But it does tend to be 1xn pieces, at least for me. That is 1x1 cheese clope, 1x1 headlight brick, 1x1 plate (tiles I haven't noticed, possibly because of the groove??), 1x4 arch (only two 1x1 areas are clutched), etc. Very disappointing/frustrating, but it tends to happen more and more. I'm sure they will replace your pieces for you. Hopefully it won't happen again for you. They've told me to check bricklink before and that they weren't going to send me pieces. I'm not sure on their stipulations.

I agree with the white around the cannon ports. But I rather like the use of tan. It seems to blend in okay with the yellow. I understand the importance of using yellow here. I like the overall look. Very fitting and impressive. I just re-built my CC a few weeks ago for a LEGO show we had and I had a lot of fun doing so. I would love to recreate something like this for them though. They definitely deserve something more impressive, especially considering they should have more firepower to take out the pirates as opposed to being faster to outrun them... Thanks for the file too! I don't use LDD anymore, but I may look into it sometime in the future if I ever download the program again.

Thanks for the review. It definitely makes me want one. The question becomes do I order something to get it or buy him separately...or both? I'm trying to cut back on LEGO spending this year, so it definitely will be tricky on what to cut out to get this figure. I don't know much about him, although I did have that game. I wonder if I still have it..

^That's because the color naming is different between AFOLs and TLG also. Dark green for AFOLs is actually earth green for TLG, so completely different naming. I think peeron or someone has a chart that shows the comparison.
-
^That same thing happened to me. There were a lot of random pieces, but free LEGO is free LEGO, even if you never use it again. But for some reason in my set I had a lot of other random missing pieces, outside of the missing bag. It was weird. I think the tree is a good idea, but poor execution. But you don't want to make it too bulky for how narrow the sidewalks are. I've been tinkering with some and I think I will continue to tinker.

I actually kind of like the trippy LSD warriors. Definitely give new meaning to jelly bean knights.
-
I agree, just continue dark tan at the top. If the double slope piece isn't available, you could use two dark tan cheese slopes since those do exist. Very interesting idea. I still haven't purchased any mixels.

Very neat! I like the idea of an ambigram. I hadn't thought of that term before. You definitely pulled it off. It definitely helps a story along with pictures and an interesting creation such as this. Keep up the great work!
