A Skirmish at North Bridge April 18th, 1775 British Redcoats engage in a firefight with local Militia on the outskirts of Concord. This small battle marks the first day of the American Revolution. (I figured as the Revolutionary War took place during the Age of Sail this was a good forum for this build) A Skirmish at North Bridge by Nicholas Goodman, on Flickr A Skirmish at North Bridge: Redcoats by Nicholas Goodman, on Flickr A Skirmish at North Bridge: Mlitia by Nicholas Goodman, on Flickr

Part II: ‘The Serendipitous Gift of Language‘ On the Island of Cozumel, Cortés and his forces readied to set out for the mainland of Mexico. It was March 12th, 1519 and the conquest of the New World was about to begin. As they prepared to leave, a canoe was seen approaching the island from the mainland. A Captain named Andrés de Tapia was dispatched to investigate the strangers. The canoe was manned by several indigenous people but as it reached the shore only one stepped on to the beach. In shaky spanish the stranger asked Tapia “Brothers, are you Christians?” The man was a Spanish priest, named Jerónimo de Aguilar, and he had been shipwrecked 8 years earlier in 1511. During his time on the Yucatan this man had become fluent in various native languages. Cortés immediately employed Aguilar as his interpreter and it would be this ability to communicate that would grant Cortés his first advantage vital to the success of his expedition. Here is my take on a Minifigure Scale Ancient Greek Homeric Galley. A predecessor to the Bireme and the more widely known Trireme, the Homeric Galley was a rowed warship that sailed the Aegean Sea around the 12th century BC. This ship specifically is based off of the Epic Poem The Odyssey and its protagonist, Odysseus' ship. Introducing a continuing LEGO series spanning the Trojan War of Achilles, Agamemnon, Hector and Paris to the decade long journey of Odysseus through the mythical Aegean Sea. I hope you enjoy my interpretation of Homer's Epic Poems. I also hope you learn a little bit about one of history's first incredible adventures. Homer's Iliad by Nicholas Goodman, on Flickr The Warlord Achilles and his Myrmidons. Achilles and his fearsome Myrmidon Soldiers hailed from Phthia in the Northwestern Aegean Sea. It is a disagreement between Achilles and the Mycenaean King Agamemnon that serves as the primary storyline of the Iliad. Acilles and his Myrmidons by Nicholas Goodman, on Flickr

With the free-for-all in the Eastern seas, Hernan Orellana outfitted an expedition to sail for the islands, to see if he might capitalize on the chaos gripping the region. The night before his departure from Weelond, Orellana went for a drink at one of the local watering holes. There he met a man who claimed to have escaped from Lotii captivity. The man told Orellana that upon his escape he had grabbed several Lottii artifacts including a map that, he claimed, led to an ancient civilization on the island of El Oleanda. Although feeling pretty doubtful about this stranger's story, Orellana purchased the map and departed for the island the very next day. Throughout the voyage Orellana studied every inch of his map, but it was only after the cook spilled a mug of lemon juice on it that it revealed its secret. Beneath the marked city on the map, the juice revealed what appeared to be a small oval with a maroon dot and the word Thabthim written inside of it. Several days later the expedition disembarked on the southern coast of the island of El Oleanda, purposefully avoiding all settlements as they didn’t want anyone seeing what they were up to. After a day's march through the thick jungles of El Oleanda, Orellana’s expedition arrived at the ruins of what his men had begun to call Thabthim. Hernan Orellana at the Ruins by Nicholas Goodman, on Flickr After a day of searching the ruins, Orellana and his men could find nothing of value more than the structures themselves. But Orellana could just not get that strange gold and maroon oval out of his head. Just as the group began to leave the courtyard a loud rumble came from beneath Orellana’s feet and all of a sudden he was falling. Falling through by Nicholas Goodman, on Flickr As Orellana came to his senses he realized he was in an underground cavern. Below the central ruins of El Oleanda was the Golden Altar of Thabthim, a shrine to a god of the ancient Oleandan civilization. The altar held a massive ruby surrounded by ornate gold pieces, untouched by looters, protected from the world for centuries. Unwilling to incur the wrath of the mighty and mysterious Thabthim, Orellana left the ruby in its altar. At least for now. Orellana on the Altar of Thabthim by Nicholas Goodman, on Flickr

With the celebrations of Oktoberfest coming to an end Hernan Orellana sets out from Weelond to begin his planned economic endeavors. Prior to his arrival to Weelond Orellana had tasked his right hand man, Gonzalo Carvajal, with constructing an outpost on the island of An Toli. Intent on establishing a sugar plantation on the Island, Carvajal learned the regions north of the Bardo River were perfect for sugar cultivation. At the foot of the western mountains Carvajal built a Presidio to serve as an outpost for the plantation and the other industries that would follow it. After some time, Orellana finally lands on An Toli and heads into the interior. For the first time he arrives at what will become his home.
