42112 Concrete Mixer Truck
Rudivdk replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well yeah, I already made a comment about those functions some time ago (few pages back). But, thinking it over again, it would seem weird that you'd have to disengage the drum while driving backwards to avoid unloading. A ratchet also seems unlikely, as that would make the drum stop turning when going backwards all the same. In the real car the drum rotates it's own direction regardless of drive direction, and it still rotates even when the car doesn't move, so it has it's own propulsion coming from the engine avoiding the drivetrain gearbox altogether. But since the target is still kids, it's probably just a switch between wheel drive and manual drive, because rotating a crank when you move the car around is no fun, and kids don't mind switching back and forth during playing, it makes them feel like they're doing serious business (at least my kids do). I'm not getting my hopes up for a complex gearbox or ratchet in a set this size. Would be a nice mod though... -

It's hard to make out in the little picture, but there are symbols on top of that little change-over catch: Left looks like a screw symbol and right looks like the whole truck with emphasis on the drum... But since the screw is a single mold with the drum, I can't figure out what they mean... -
I only had 'em in 42075 (first responder) were 1 single gearmesh (12t-20t) screwed the entire driveline. In a large gearbox as this one in the Sian it would be more apparent though. I have RTC as well without problems. I think it is not so much the set/build but the factory or production line that is the issue. But you're right, we have a separate thread for this, let's continue over there...

Glad that worked out for you But it is a bit worrying that TLG hasn't been able to sort out this issue that is already known for few years... Dunno about the white bars, I've seen them in reviews but do not know their purpose. I guess limiters for suspension travel...? That would mean it will get stressed yes...
-
I don't have the model, so I can't check if it actually is a part of the drivetrain, but if so maybe you have one of those faulty tan 20t double bevel gears. Those are known to create immense levels of friction in a geartrain... Could also be that it is difficult to turn the drivetrain by hand, dunno if you already took the wheels out of the box but you might want to give it another try with wheels on...

Wow, looking at the overwhelming number of responses and praise you got, Technic is the new standard for gardening... Well, fitting to the theme or or not, I like it! It is the first flower built of Technic that I've ever seen. Really original and looks good too. And extra points for the 60mins challenge. I'm thinking of joining EBFS too, but probably in another theme. My kids have loads of Ninjago, and I have Ninjago City and Docks on display, so I should be able to piece something decent together from that. Good luck in the contest stay healthy!

Technic General Discussion
Rudivdk replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yes I know, but these are specifically branded almost as a subtheme. It's a niche within Creator, and will probably stick around for a while as such. Similar to the old (1990-ish?) 'Basic' sets with the Jeep+racer, Firetruck or House, and the old Technic universal sets. But a full theme line-up with B-models was only there on Technic and Model Team I think. -
Technic General Discussion
Rudivdk replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I don't have figures to back it up, but Technic has always been one of the few themes that had B-Model instructions (Model Team also had them but that theme is long gone). So I guess the phenomenon is stronger in Technic then anywhere else. -
I guess this nails it, at least for me. I am old fashioned and like my builds mostly mechanical. PU/C+ is what the current relevant market demands, I'm just not part of that group. So we arrived at a point were we are all just venting our opinions on RC and motor systems here, but this is the Volvo Hauler topic. We can discuss electrics in other topics, let's get back to the actual set at hand...

Technic General Discussion
Rudivdk replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Guess it's quite clear where we are heading. Would be interesting to see though what the number of online available community alternates are per year. I notice lately that community spawns at least 5 quality alternates PER SET for Technic. If that is an increase over let's say the last 5-10 years, than TLG has chosen the right thing from a business perspective. Hence their near obsessive drive to 'engage with the community' (remember the press release when they bought Bricklink? No word about profit, only blabla about getting closer to community)... Above might come across a bit sour, but that was not my intention, it's just how I see it. -
Absolutely true, but I personally do not like this as the way forward for LEGO Technic. There are other toys out there doing the RC thing much better because they were designed to be RC in every aspect. With LEGO, RC feels to be forced into a building system that excells in other things, rather than being RC. Like @Erik Leppen said above...

Maybe so, but since there is already so much negativity, I do not want to contribute any further to it. Even when it is just a personal opinion or explanation of my standpoint...

Control+ General Discussion
Rudivdk replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Same for me. Considering how I use my PF, having Buwizz or Sbrick and probably the Brickcontroller app would achieve the same as what I would do with C+, for way less money. Just gotta make a final score on some extra PF (or even buggy)motors before the prices go up... -

So true... And the Volvo actually seems to have the perfect set of motors to do so. Now if it only were PF and not C+...

Technic 2020 Set Discussion
Rudivdk replied to dimaks13's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Could be that the "simple hub" had a little redesign, only change would be the two buttons on top are rearranged now. Ports are still same, 1 on each side. Or the 'Technic (=C+) simple hub' gets yet another design compared to PU simple hub. -
Amazing build, I can really imagine them gliding through space... Really unique shaping you did there, with those panels and the animal theme. The big one is even better then the smaller ones you showed in part I. I think space theme and animal shapes work very well, I would like to see more of these (not necessarily by you, but in general).

Exactly my thoughts as well. The 1-motor-1-function-RC-thing is estranging me a bit from (motorized) Technic at the moment. All this RC does not feel necessary to me, at least not straight from the box. But like you said, I probably won't buy this (or any C+ actually) so why do I even complain. I like all the yellow as well, finally some gaps in the panel line-up are filled. I'm working on a MOC that desperately needs those new yellow parts... and was blamed for the jerky unrealistic steering IIRC, until people started using the train remote to fine-tune the servo's movement. Let's hope TLG has fixed that with their app profile this time...

I haven't seen (or just missed) any comment about it, but to me it seems in all pics and vids and even BI PDF from LEGO website that the dashboard / instrument panel is not centered to the steering wheel. It seems to be centered though in the real car. Is it camera angles playing tricks on me, or is the dash really not centered to the steering wheel. Seems a cheep cheat if true...

I don't want to yet again spark the same B-model hate/love fire, but I believe that TLG did their homework and based on market research found that off-the-shelf B-models are only appreciated by a very small group of buyers (being us here on EB mostly I guess). Why spend resources/time/money on something that does not noticeably add value to a product (seen from TLG's perspective, not us here on EB). Luckily we still have guys like Milan (Grohl) within TLG to provide us with that extra bit of AFOL-value. And let's not forget that Rebrickable is also filling a very nice gap here, and TLG does not have to pay/invest anything for that. Let's be clear, I am on the 'WE WANT B-MODELS!!!' camp too, but I fully understand the business decision taken here by TLG. -

Epic build Milan! I do not own this set, nor do I intend to buy it (I'm one of those guys that sticks with 'good old PF', and my budget is not endless...) but this machine has both the looks and the functions you'd expect. Works perfect as a stand alone MOC, but even more impressive as an alternate (although the partcount of 42100 helps here...). I understand you want to promote your model, but calling manually adjustable angles for lights and mirrors a feature is on the edge I think. I personally just would've mentioned I wasn't able to fix 'em in place . Anyway, that's just nitpicking, don't take it too seriously. And people, watch the vid until the very end, it has an ending that put a smile on my face for about an hour. That's a nice thing in these grim times.- 784 replies

42112 Concrete Mixer Truck
Rudivdk replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
So what functions would it have? Obviously steering front axles, rotation of the drum (powered from the rear wheels, can be engaged/disengaged?) and tilting of the drum? Maybe manual manipulation of the unloading shute in the back, but that would be about it I guess. Still decent enough for it's size. Edit: rtfm... Functions as posted in first post. Tilting the drum makes no sense anyway, it has the internal screw for 'pumping up' the load. Maybe you can reverse the (driven) rotation direction of the drum between 'mixing' and 'unloading' though? Unless it is just manual, then you just turn the knob the other way around ... -
I'd say XL for drive, L for tipping the bed and horizontal motor for articulation steering. The horizontal motor could be placed right on top of the articulation point even...

Seeing TLG nowadays, they would not make a single-use piece this big for a smaller 2h wave technic set. So what else can we expect the drum piece to be used in? Technic? Something city/space related (shuttle/rocket)? A silo for a city scale farm? Monkey-kid? Ninjago Mecha? Can't think of any other (technic) vehicle that could use it... Edit: @Jundis we thought the same...
