For the upper parts maybe Dark Blue would be a nice addition to DBG? It is relatively widely available by now, and would work well for a marine themed camo scheme. Combined with a lighter (LBG/Medium Blue (42066-blue)) bottom it would still look realistic imho. Try this for inspiration: https://www.google.com/search?q=blue+fighter+jet+camo

Why "and Model Team"?
Rudivdk replied to Larry Andersen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Look at it from this perspective: if you build a Technic core and cover it in Technic panels/parts it is obviously Technic, but when you cover that same Technic core with System parts it is generally not considered (pure) Technic anymore. The official Lego theme that comes closest to 'Technic core with System shell' has always been Model Team (back in the days...). In other words: it allows builders to freely mix system parts into their Technic builds and still display it over here without fear of if being 'out of forum scope'. Hence the double theme subforum. With the scale modeling sub-forum and Creator expert sub-theme things got a bit more fuzzy though... -
At some point I just start a new build next to the existing one, to avoid taking stuff apart. For a car I'm working on I have 4 different chassis' laying around right now, all new iterations but none final. Guess it is one of the reasons why I am not good at actually finishing MOCs... It is one of the reasons why I started including 3d modelling software in my design process. Easy rebuild when it is just a few clicks. The A10 is really taking shape, nice progress everywhere! From what I see in your updates and the way you work I assume you enjoy the tinkering itself just as much as making an actual model right? It's good to see someone enjoying the hobby

For anyone interested, I've completed the instructions for this car and put them up on Rebrickable. -

[TC17] Rebel Tow Truck
Rudivdk replied to Ctan's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Exactly that. Just to be sure, 'all the rest' in my post was referring to all copycats/reselling instructions/copyright infringements etc, not 'all the rest' in general... -

Rudivdk replied to Ctan's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@Ctan at least you can take some pride from the fact that your model is considered good enough to be copied. It places you(r model) in the top league of moc'ers. All the rest just sucks, try to ignore it and continue enjoying the hobby for your own pleasure. -
[MOC] 42112 Silos transport
Rudivdk replied to blaz62's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This is really well done! Nice use of the available colors and parts, and an overall convincing appearance. Bonus points for Mack-compatibility -
Just... wow... This crane is in a league of it's own. A video showing the crane in action would be nice (although I imagine it should be played fast-forward to prevent getting bored...). Getting a 10m tall Lego structure to stand on it's own is impressive enough, but can this crane also lift stuff? And do you know how much weight it can handle? I recall Dawid Szamandra's mobile crane lifting a kitchen chair without collapsing, this monster must be capable of at least a similar weight I assume...

Huh, that's a bit underwhelming (but what can you expect from a trencher actually...). I would have hoped to see how the wheel raises and lowers, and where the dirt is being dispatched and all. Still, thank you Doug! I will do some more research on this thing, seems like an oddly complex but satisfying object to replicate...

Technic 2021 Set Discussion
Rudivdk replied to LvdH's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It is a very real possibility. We would see the F1 wishbone pieces again after looong time (not counting the lime ones in the Sian), and indeed those tires would fit perfectly. Top it off with pushrod suspension and we have the perfect 42000 remake. Just some different panels slapped around and call it Ferrari... It would also almost certainly mean no gearbox... -
Technic 2021 Set Discussion
Rudivdk replied to LvdH's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This line-up gives me mixed feelings... It is good to see a few more cars in (probably) the Corvette scale, so the car carrier can be further filled. It is also good to see another (again: probably) 1:10 scale car with (hopefully) some proper car functions (please do a 'normal', smooth, simple 4-speed gearbox this time...) It's nice to see the 18+ label in Technic on something other than a 1:8 scale car (although it's still a car and reasonably large...) I really love cars, so I'm happy with the strong focus here, but... Only a €10 plane, no other aircraft...? Only 2 small construction vehicles, without pneumatics or motors, and probably only the larger one with manual LA...? A hovercraft... (which we had a few years ago and that didn't sell well...) We've seen what happened with a licenced 1:10 scale car (42096, only 'pretty' panels, no technical guts inside), if that will be the standard for the Ferrari it will be a big letdown I can't be bothered with C+ for now, so another 'set' which packs that monstrous hub in a few panels with wheels isn't cutting it for me... I really hope 2H will bring proper construction equipment and/or interesting aircraft (plane/heli), and more pneumatics. Otherwise most of this year will be a pass for me. NB: I'm currently opinionless about the licenced pullbacks. I like (and have collected) most of them through the years, but always found the RSP far too high (was able to get them for half most the time). Let's hope the licence doesn't drive the price up even further... If they are/become affordable, I'll probably get them both, they are both really iconic vehicles. -

Waaaait a minute.... Yellow Jeep Wrangler you say...? Rescue hovercraft in orange and DBG, let's hope it will re-utilize some of the new Osprey parts... -
Modular truck
Rudivdk replied to jorgeopesi's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I like your solution of placing the motors off-centre, outside the chassis. But the extra gearing creates more possible weakspots, especially with a full truck configuration the drivetrain might struggle with weight (torque stress skipping or wind-up)... The L-motor immediately goes from 0 to max torque (contrary to XL, which has sort of a starting/stopping torque curve). But it is all nicely braced though, compact scale and not built for racing, so you should be good. Nice compact ackermann steering system too! -
@astyanax how well did that bevel gear hold up after your driving sessions (I assume the brickbuilt version has the two buggy motors)? Seems indeed like a weakpoint in the setup... The car is again a cool and minimalistic design! The extreme version with the lime accents looks great, I love that color combo

According to my Rebrickable listing I have over 134.000 parts. Since I have some sets and MOCS built at the moment, I estimate the number of stored parts to be around 120.000 (=120k). Could be around 110.000 also, I am not sure how much parts are used at the moment... Yeah well... Actually the cars will be dismantled sooner or later for the parts, so their display value is less important to me than those boxes.
-
It actually served multiple purposes... normally I flatten my boxes and store them (I don't throw away any boxes since about last 10 years). But I didn't want to take these UCS boxes apart (or do anything to them that could damage them). They were constantly sitting around somewhere being a pain in the megablocks. So this is just a fancy way of getting them out of the way without damaging them .

Over the past months I've been updating my room quite a bit. It's not completely finished (meaning: it's still a mess...) but most things are in (the right) place now. My work/display area (still messy, and too much models to display. I need to make some choices...): My storage wall (120k-ish parts in there...): Over the last few days I decorated the remaining wall with some "art" : This is how I mounted the boxes to the wall: To fully support these boxes I used 15cm x 15cm steel brackets Attach the brackets to the wall with 37cm height between the horizontal parts (= inner box size). I put them 20cm apart horizontally Gently slide the inner box between the brackets Put the lid over the inner box and brackets (be careful not to scratch the inside of the lid!).

Your Best Technic Bargains
Rudivdk replied to Kumbbl's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I can confirm this trick works like a charm. It is indeed a matter of patience, and a bit of luck. Don't bite too fast. No matter what platform you use, you are definately not the only one looking for a bargain. So one more tip: if the platform offers a way of direct communication with the seller, ALWAYS go for that instead of online bidding. Don't search too far away from your own residence (so you can act quick and pick it up yourself). And try to politely put some pressure on it ("for [price x] I can already come and pick it up this evening"). People like quick cash, so it often works as extra leverage to make a fast deal and shave a few bucks off as well. -
Your Best Technic Bargains
Rudivdk replied to Kumbbl's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Today I got me a (nearly) complete 8421 with box and both instruction booklets for €100, from a colleague of my wife. It is missing a few standard parts (some connectors, an axle, that kind of stuff) and 1 pneumatic hose, but the buggy motor is still working flawlessly (I tested it) and both pneumatic cylinders are still completely airtight and moving smooth (also tested). So I think I made a good deal.
