[WIP] Rally car
VKTechnic replied to VKTechnic's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Front end is pretty much done, rear end could still use some work... wip08 by VKTechnic, on Flickr I also did an off-road test, and this car doesn't perform too well on anything besides flat ground. Fixing that would require rebuilding the rear half of the car, and considering that the car runs fine on flat ground, I think I'll keep it the way it is. Maybe next time... -

Welcome to Eurobricks! Love the micro McPherson, those are always a challenge in LEGO, let alone that small. I'd love to see some pictures of your 2 speed gearbox if you have any -

They do, but I can't change much about that with the current suspension setup. FYI they used to be 1L closer in on each side, but the rear suspension was horrible. -

Starting to look like an actual car now Rally WIP 7 by VKTechnic, on Flickr Front end could use some work though... -
My Mustang has lots of suspension features in a 19-wide setup: Mustang Suspension by VKTechnic, on Flickr My current project also has a 15-wide McPherson setup: Rally WIP 1 by VKTechnic, on Flickr 8421 wheels are pretty useful for realistic suspensions. I don't know much about driven front axles, but it should be doable if e.g. the steering motor is moved elsewhere.

This tread pattern is fairly common, I'd say go for it. Personally, I'm addicted to Axial's R35 compound, haven't tried anything outside of their Ripsaws (aside from some Micro-scale tires, which featured the same tread pattern as the tires you're looking at).

Updated my spreadsheet with sets that Brickset considers from 2005-present. Don't quite have time to update the parts counts and inventory links, if anyone would like to do that, shoot me an e-mail.
-
Found something interesting, this probably goes for a few sets, but Brickset considers e.g. 8419 to be from 2005 (eligible), but Bricklink says it's from 2004 (not eligible). Also, noticed that 8045 has 117 parts on Brickset, but 118 on Bricklink. (Every piece counts, doesn't it?) Which source should we trust?

Finally found a rear axle that I'm mostly satisfied with. Rally WIP 6 by VKTechnic, on Flickr Only problem is it's a tad slow, but that's not a big issue. Now I can finally move on to the bodywork -
Hey guys! I created a spreadsheet with all the eligible sets! Go check it out and let me know if there's anything I could do to make it better LINK

[WIP] Rally car

Spent a few hours working on the 7th rear axle design, and I'm still not satisfied. Rally WIP 5 by VKTechnic, on Flickr I've finally improved the suspension stiffness, but the RC motor stalls much too easily (even with the least amount of gearing possible). It probably has something to do with the receiver, so I may abandon the RC motor and switch to some L-Motors. Oh, and I started mocking up some of the bodywork. -
Madoca's new truck again?
VKTechnic replied to terenshi's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Struggling to build a dinky rally car and Madoca's off creating perfection. Just a tad demoralizing -

Just finished rebuilding the rear axle for three reasons: 1) durability, 2) better weight distribution, and 3) I wanted to use a buggy motor. Rally WIP 4 by VKTechnic, on Flickr Next up is bodywork :) -

Mainly 5x11 panels since the body's not too curvy. Might try printing some decals to make it look more like a rally car -

Yeah, I only own V1. Haven't bought parts in over 1.5 years aside from a $33 Bricklink order for the Mustang. -

They're rolling fine, very little wobbling. Only problem I'm having so far is the 2L axle connecting the gear to the CV joint is getting pulled out during rapid suspension compression/decompression. Working on a fix for that now
