LEGO Hidden Side 2020
Lucarex replied to Digger of Bricks's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
You need to find more diverse kids with better taste in those focus groups (mine was all for the dark red, his “noooo why????” says it all). I guess that duality good/bad is also why the High School ended up in that lovely dark red, although kudos to that set’s design team for being brave as it could have just been boring Hogwarts-like tan. -
Well that’s an instant vote! Already well on it’s way to 10k and deservedly so.

LEGO Hidden Side 2020
Lucarex replied to Digger of Bricks's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Good interview that, I found this bit particularly interesting (even if I completely disagree with the designer’s opinion)... “Speaking of colors, very late in the process we shortly considered dark red. I know it's weird, but I am happy we didn't. The design language for Hidden Side is something I am very involved in and keeping the good guy vehicles in bright colors is important in tying them together.“ -

Great review but it doesn’t make me want the set. -

I don’t think the new version compares very well with the 2015 ship to be honest. The second hull (and that’s all it is really, just one large extra piece) doesn’t justify the price increase, even allowing for inflation, and as you say the side build was better. I’ll be bricklinking that great white shark of course, but the set is an easy pass particularly when the other sets are so MUCH better value for money. -
The TH is on my list to buy very soon so I can't help sorry. Personally though I think it's a beautiful standalone set deserving a place on its own, it doesn't really fit in with the aesthetic of the OFS (which incidentally I've "accessorised" with the Hidden Side lighthouse and fishing boat as if to prove my point here).

I missed this when you first posted it...what a fantastic build!!! The huge part count aside, I think this would ace an IDEAS vote and review.

LEGO Monkie Kid 2020
Lucarex replied to Classic_Spaceman's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
With respect, you don’t know that. Plans are one thing but if a new theme sells poorly and doesn’t make a good return on the obvious investment, then LEGO may cut their losses as they’ve done before and move on. These are very difficult times and not every theme is a perennial Ninjago. -

I think this way too although reading some of the background, it seems they pulled in random designers from all over the place (ones with workload capacity you’d guess) under a manager/lead rather than put a dedicated team together, so I’m less concerned about the lack of resource diverted moving forward. There’s a big difference between wanting to see the theme fail, and just expecting it to. Personally I think this will be a one-wave swing and a miss. Better A&A themes than MK have met similar fates after all. Then again, TLG have been pretty blatant about chasing the Chinese yuan of late and there’s also the feeling with this home-grown theme of wanting to beat certain clone companies at their own game in their own backyard, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see them persevere. -

Nothing like a global pandemic-induced economic crisis to flunk that test. -

That’s a great shout as a rerelease. I’d also love to see them do that most beautiful and iconic of wartime planes, the Spitfire. -

There is no "value" here, it's a new inhouse theme but priced at or above Star Wars levels. Worse in fact because even SW has a variety of inexpensive sets ranging upwards to allow all budgets (kids and adults) easy access. Either a very bold or very stupid pricing strategy by LEGO, time will tell which. Doubt I'll be buying any, would only consider either Pigsy's Truck or Secret HQ on a significant 30-40% discount. Other than that I'll look to get 1 or 2 side builds separately, like the shop build from Monkey Mech which will make a mini Chinatown build in my Ninjago City. -

Not sure I agree it's a 2-in-1, just an extra hull from the 2015 set and a massive price step-up from the 54.99 set. That GWS will be brick-linked to extinction! -

We can but dream...is it wrong to be greedy and (alongside the new hammerhead, great white, stingray and anglerfish) wish they'd have made the long-rumoured orca? Anyway, I'm still in shock that the big ship set is £125, a massive 25% increase on the expected RRP and previous 2015 exploration vessel. That'll go on discount immediately with other retailers surely. -

Same thing just less words to type Added the ocean creatures too as let’s be honest, that’s a big selling feature of these NatGeo sets. -

Not sure if posted before but just seen the official UK prices on the City Ocean Exploration sets released on June 1. 60263 Mini Sub/Hammerhead 8.99 60264 Submersible/Anglerfish 24.99 60265 Underwater Base/Hammerhead/Stingray 54.99 60266 Tanker/GW Shark 124.99 (no mention of the polybag with stingray but guessing that’ll be 3.99) -

Seems they're taking a massive risk after all. I hope for their sake there's a few million middle class affluent Chinese to buy these culturally targeted sets, because they ain't gonna shift many in Europe & US at these inflated price points. It's a real shame too as some of them are really nice sets. Pigsy's cannibalistic food truck and the container HQ are the standouts for me. They're growing on me but enough to cough up, when there's LOTS of competition across other Lego themes this summer? I'm not so sure. -

I would sell a spare kidney to be able to recreate this amazing render in reality. It’s stunning and every update it just gets better. It’s ironic that this is probably the one example that fits both the original ethos of the Architecture theme and the current (inferior) direction of tourist attraction sets. -

Please. That rusty leaky pile of soulless inner city bricks is in no sense an "English landmark" (like Big Ben/HOP or Tower Bridge) as part of any theme and shouldn't be considered as anything other than a one-off commercial grab of an increasingly irrelevant club (and example of corporate greed whilst drowning in debt) desperate to sell more "merch" China by piggybacking a bigger brand, with an unknown design lead at TLG jumping at the chance to play fanboy. Yeah I'm not a fan and unsurprisingly I've since heard the set has sold well below expectations (just like the club's performances on the pitch in recent years!) Well there's already been 2 more Eiffel's since in the Architecture line, the standalone from 5 years or so ago and the more recent Paris skyline, so I think it's alreay well catered for. -
Good spot...I didn't even see the dash above.

I think it's a combination of a typo and yes, nonsense Roman numerals. It should read VIMVII or 6-(1)000-7 or 6007 the set number of Bat Lord as @Oky highlighted above.

LEGO Creator 2020 - Rumors, Speculation, and Discussion
Lucarex replied to Digger of Bricks's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I'm glad I'm not the only one having that thought, because after the initial "holy crap they're doing another haunted house!" excitement has dissipated, I'm really not feeling the must-have urges, and realise it's because the exterior itself isn't anything special architecturally-speaking. It's ok I guess but it's supposed to be a fairground attraction, in other words, over the top spooky, yet there's none of that really. For the price and space it'll take up, I think I'll be quite content instead with the more gothic Hidden Side/MF Vampire Castle combo. I think the DB5 "double licence to price gouge" was a one off given the unique circumstances where both Eon and AM held rights to the iconic car. I can't think of another example to be honest. Agree though on a vault re-release, like the Taj last year. Just gut feeling but think we might see the Sydney Opera House dusted off. -

I like the box art redesign but don’t really get why they’ve dropped the Creator Expert branding for this generic 18+ (which you associate with 18 or R-rated themes of violence or sex, not a spooky house ). It’s similar to the new White House box where they’ve relegated and shrunk the Architecture logo to a tiny bottom corner. For 200+ notes, I should hope so! -
