Guilds of Historica New Member Guide
Henjin_Quilones replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
It depends... some of them are real, on-the-map towns and cities, in which people are wont to build (though some are a bit more proprietary than others and you might want to try to consult the original builders before building something there, just as a basic courtesy). Others are beginning to become real settlements, as a particular builder gradually adds a mill, and a blacksmith, and a watchtower, etc. to move his or her claim into official status. Others are made up just to provide a sense of color and realism to a story. If you are wondering about one particular town that you saw in a recent MOC, ask that builder about it. If you want your own town, though, name it and start building it! -

On the first page of the Guilds is a link: The books are essentially the over-arching storyline of the Guilds, which do not really need to affect what you build for your own storyline. In summary, in Book I, an evil wizard named Victor Revolword overthrew the king of Historica after seeking and finding the Elemental Helm that allowed him to control the four elements, in the process unleashing elemental monsters across Historica, before he was finally vanquished and slain; however, a new guild, Varlyrio, an ally of the other four, went rogue (or at least the military did) and joined with the Hand of Corruption and other Nocturnian groups, in the new Black Spire, under the leadership of Lord Raavage. This led into Book II, where each of the four guilds underwent a civil war, first Nocturnus (Spire vs. Resistance), then the other three (Algus vs. Mitgardians, Drow/Plague vs. Avalonians, and Kaliphlin High Council vs. the Desert King). The final chapter of Book II was just completed, and it tied together the four civil wars and resolved them, bringing things into the present (which is still unknown, except that there is a current challenge ("A safe haven"). Book III should be coming sometime in the coming months. If you want details of the stories (like the civil wars) you might have to do some digging, as they can be harder to find. -
The South Gate of Lleidr Castle
Henjin_Quilones replied to Henjin_Quilones's topic in Guilds of Historica
That was the idea, to create something that was in danger of falling down at any moment. Glad you like it, as it was outside my own comfort zone for sure. I agree about the reddish brown, as that should have been smaller, and also about the arches, but breaking up the smooth parts of the arches would have been more work than I was willing to take on at the moment; it was hard enough to get them somewhat stable at an angle, and then to join it all together, too. Glad you like the rest, though, and it was good to build with you, Zlatan! Thanks, Kai, Groot for a tree trunk is something I always wanted to do. There are some hammers and binoculars in the wall, among other things. Thanks, Titus! Thanks, glad you like the base! They are certainly not noble elves, that is for sure. I did not plan for any rockwork in the build, as it was hardly essential to the common idea we were trying to capture, but I can see how some dark bley might have been nice to break up the foreground a bit, or force some shaping in the walls. Thanks, Blufiji! Thanks, TM! The angle of the walls (except for the arches and that immediately above them) was done by building slopes onto a regular rectangular, on-the-stud-grid wall. I thought it turned out rather nice myself. Thanks, U-M, glad you like the castle as a whole, and that this section did not disappoint! Thanks, Gunman! I love your texturing, too, so I am glad you like this stuff here, too!- 13 replies

A nice castle with very clean lines, DG! It looks well-maintained, as others have said, rather than being all run-down and decrepit. I have a few small critiques: one, I don't like the blue technic connectors used to connect the icicles to the building, as they look unnatural and out of place; two, the grill bricks in the wall throw off the texture to me, as they only work (in my opinion) in walls that go to an extreme of texture, rather than something simpler like this one; and three, the tree seems too large and sprawling to me. Some things I like: one, the SNOT beams holding up the top story of the tower; two, the snow around the castle; three, the interior, particularly the various dressers and cupboards; and four, the way the path wends its way through the rocks. Good to see you building, DG!

I love the roof, TM! Definitely the highlight for me. The mixing of the two greens is a bit off-putting, as others have said, but I think it is more the arrangement (it almost looks striped in the picture) than the actual combining of the two. On a walk the other day I saw two greens very similar to these mixed, with thick olive moss topped by a few scattered patches of lichen or something like that, so it is at least natural to combine them. Another nice LD-style build from you!

Very cool, though it seems like Octan is moving on the planets a bit soon... or is this still in testing in the Arizona desert?

Very neat approach! I love the various phone screens, and the giant minifig hands complete it nicely! -

Hi Phadeout, it is generally preferred that people use genuine LEGO parts, of course (certainly no Lepin or the like!) but 3rd party pieces, such as custom weapons or gear, have generally been seen as acceptable. Try not to overdo it, and if you would like your sigfig to be reproducible by others in the future (in a collab build, or as part of a challenge entry) I would say it is better to stay purist. That being said, I know lots of people use 3rd party stuff all over the place. -
@Ecclesiastes As regards ships, is there a certain timeframe we should limit ourselves to in terms of historical accuracy? As in, should we avoid Pirates of the Caribbean/Brethren of the Brick Seas kinds of ships in favor of more medieval and ancient styles (e.g. triremes or longboats)? I'm not too well-versed in the shipcraft of Historica, so I do not know what is typical or generally expected.

Nicely done, TM! Despite everything I like about the build, my favorite part is probably the heads on pikes with rubber-band blood. I do wish you had swapped out those 1x8 tiles under the tudor section for something smaller and rougher, though.
-
I love the use of that dish for a cart! And the corn guy's suit being genetically modified corn is great, too. Is Monsanto in Mitgardia? My main critique is that the right side of the building looks too rough and unfinished; a smooth edge would have looked better, I think. Nicely done on the smoke, though.

I loved this over on Flickr, and still love it here! The trees and the atmosphere sell it for me, and the build is just so technically sound and aesthetically pleasing that I could spend hours looking at it. An artistic masterpiece in LEGO form.

Foyodran Tower, The Void Valley
Henjin_Quilones replied to MassEditor's topic in Guilds of Historica
How big is this thing? It doesn't look like it should be that large (I think that is because it lacks minifigs for scale), but a rough count of your base indicates it is on four 48x48 baseplates... Impressive build, and I can sympathize with the back photography issue after one of my Chal. V Cat. C builds. I love the use of all of those horns to decorate the walls. And your twisted trees are fantastic! -
The Western Wall of Lleidr
Henjin_Quilones replied to ZlatanXVIGustaf's topic in Guilds of Historica
Very nice, Zlatan! The texturing here is great, though almost too much. I'm sure in real life it is different, but in the pictures it is difficult to distinguish between the front wall, tower, and the back wall, due to the similarity of texture and color between them; they camouflage, if you will. That being said, it is a technically solid build, with some amazing things going on. My favorite part is the tree in the front left. Good to be on the team with you! -
Mine's still half-together, though... so you guys should rebuild yours and come to North America for a show.

Book II - Avalonia: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Henjin_Quilones replied to Rogue Angel's topic in Guilds of Historica
Welcome, Zlatan! And a new freebuild from me, unconnected with my Chronicles of Hesperia (part of the winning collaboration with @ZlatanXVIGustaf and @The Maestro): -
The South Gate of Lleidr Castle A freebuild for Avalonia This is the south gate of Lleidr Castle, a ruined fortress of central Avalonia, nestled in the eaves of a forest that has slowly grown over it. A band of outlaws has made it their abode, calling themselves the Merry Men of Lleidr. No one knows the history of the castle, as all records of it have vanished, and the bandits themselves do not care. They have repaired certain parts of the castle just enough to serve as living quarters and storehouses. They did not do an especially good job of repair, though; if they had been capable of an honest day's work at a building trade, after all, they would not have become bandits. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ ..................................................................................................................................................................................................... Thanks for looking! C&C welcome. This was built as an entry for the Castle Collaboration category of the Summer Joust 2017, with @ZlatanXVIGustaf and @The Maestro as teammates. When they get theirs posted here in the guilds, I recommend checking them out, or else go to Flickr and look if you are impatient, since their entries are superior to mine, and are the reason our team won. Mine just ensured we did not lose...

This fits very nicely into the style of the village, and the rockwork blends well into that too. I do agree with Blu that a higher castle wall would have been better, but for an inner courtyard that is less of an issue, I suppose. I like the dark bley tiles loosely pressed for cobblestones, but a bit more texture in the rest of the courtyard (maybe more dark bley tiles?) could have been nice. On the other hand, too much in terms of texture or color there would have distracted from the minifigs that inhabit that space, so it is a toss-up there.
-
Looks great, TM, I approve! Of course you knew that already, but it is very well done. I borrowed very heavily from it for my own build of the lighthouse, at least in terms of style and texture. I love the rockwork and the way the stonework integrates so naturally into it. I think the water is perfect the way it is, by the way, as it shows a moody and stormy aspect of the sea, rather than a bright blue sunny aspect. Good work, and I am glad to be a fellow councilman of Tire Keep with you!

This is great, so many scenes packed into one build! It looks very nice. You did a very good job of conveying a sense of life and activity, imbuing these characters with personality both with the description and with the scene itself. My main critique might be similar to Titus', namely that your half-timbered tudor section could use a bit of work. Rather than the one-plate high brown border on top and bottom, a two-plate high border of brown would look better - it matches the width of a brick better that way (though a brick is technically 2.5 plate-heights wide). If you can, I would try to make the brown diagonal supports better overlap the brown borders, so that there is not an awkward bit of white in the corners. That being said, however, you have managed to make something that looks convincingly well-used, very old, and only half-way maintained, which, going from your description, is exactly what you intended. I also like the references to Queen Ylspeth...

Great job, Titus! You made an excellent build here. Eventually I am sure you will acquire more than five trans-clear 1x2 tiles or plates, or else trans-blue, and then you will be able to make a lovely harbor scene. Not for this one, though, since it is probably already dismantled... I ordered a bunch of trans-light blue myself for my own build in our collab, since I wanted to have more water anyways, and I am seriously thinking about Bricklinking some more. The life of the scene is lovely, and there is just so much to look at. Proud to be fellow councilmember of Tire Keep with you!

"Safe Haven" Challenge Cat. B - Yureishima
Henjin_Quilones replied to mccoyed's topic in Guilds of Historica
Great work on these figs, mccoyed! They do a nice job of filling in a gap that currently exists in GoH, and each conveys a delightful sense of character and individuality. I particularly like the Kappa pirate with the upside-down beard as a giant unibrow on his forehead. The descriptions really sell them, though.- 25 replies

This is a great courtyard scene! I love the way the palm trees overhang the wall in the back, giving it a very lived-in and organic feel. The angled wall and the wooden supports jutting from the walls are also nice. I am impressed by the number of those figs you have, as they make a nice little army. The uniform disguises that they are all different races and skintones, which is what a uniform is meant to do, I would argue. In the future I think I would avoid using the lime green tendril with the other plants like that, since having only one makes it stand out awkwardly. I might also suggest limiting the colors of flowers to just a few, rather than using so many reds and oranges and yellows and pinks. Overall, though, this is a great build. I love seeing and hearing more about Khadira.
-
The story is very enjoyable, and the build is, too. I will echo some others about there being too many 1x1 round bricks in the round section versus the rest, but of course that technique requires that. Perhaps using a few more in the rest of the wall would have evened out the balance. That portcullis is an excellent use of the gate parts, and the fact that both the drawbridge and the portcullis work is great. Well done!
