1. True, there has been various trans-colored parts via DC and Marvel. Also quite a lot of black parts via Batman. And many angled plates/bricks via Quinjets/ Milano / Helicarrier, and other sets. Personally I still don't buy licensed sets for parts when I have no interest in the subject. A set like the 75272: Sith TIE Fighter might have a ton of wing plates in it, but I don't see it worth a parts pack when I have zero interest in the theme.
2. Yeah, it could be like a generic hair/head combo color, or a specific mould like Monkie Kid or Chinese Newyear Getting a headband with hair shape for each different Ninja obviously would be nice. A more generic way would be to make something like a combination of this, but no long hair. But it would still look pretty weird considering different hairstyles.
3. Price per part ratio might look good on paper sure, and the 16x16 4/3 high bricks with technic holes are useful as well for connecting large areas securely. But the rest of the pieces have a low volume, considering you need 2304 pieces to cover the 48x48 area. If you like the subject matter, and design / combination, then I think they are nice on display. But as a parts pack it's highly debatable. In perspective, Extra DOTS has 109 pieces for €3,99, but you don't get a base, or design to go with it, so ultimately would still end up costing over €100 (adding a 48x48 baseplate) Going even further, buying 2 of those 1500 piece Classic Boxes gives a lot more building value for a similar price, even if you get a lot of colors. or
4. This is just speculation of what 2021 sets could be like when looking at previous years, in terms of size/style/subject. 31111 Cyber Drone €9,99 <- 2018 Drone Explorer 31112 Wild Lion €14,99 < - 2016 Park Animals <- 2017 Mighty Dinosaurs <- 2019 Deep Sea Creatures 31113 Racecar Transporter €24,99 <- 2015 Vehicle Transporter <- 2017 Airshow Aces <- 2019 Shuttle Transporter 31114 Offroad Motorcycle €19,99 <- 2017 Sunset Street Bike 31115 Space-Mech €24,99 <- 2019 Underwater Robot <- 2015 Future Flyers 31116 Safari Treehouse €29,99 < - 2016 Treehouse <- 2018 Treehouse 31117 ??? 31118 Surfer Beachhouse €49,99 <- 2012 Seaside House
5. I do also think it looks great still, the framed window certainly stands out as the biggest difference, makes it look more armored/rigid.
6. Same here in Europe, still called Elite Police, which brings me even more to the link to the 2013 sets. Instead now the Police hero is Duke Detain instead of Chase McCain
7. I actually love the design of them, I think it looks good in darkblue, gives the impression of a big engine under there, and a bit of a rough/classic look with the angles. I mean, they could have used this, but they use that part style fairly frequently. It would almost look like this vehicle from 2013 then (60007). I can certainly see that this might be inspired by 2013, which was also called Elite Police in the description. I wonder if the City Center 60292 (€99,99) has a Museum in it, then the Drill set makes a lot of sense. There's even another raid on a hideout 60278 (€99,99) As for the other 2021 Police set, I hope the Prisoner Transport is a dark blue bus, and maybe a Prison set in summer?
8. That's certainly one of the situations where the US price is much worse , 3 sets for $90, vs €60, so it still happens for US and City. Still don't know what causes those extreme differences (compared to many other themes €20 sets being $20) I have been ranting about Star Wars and some Harry Potter sets being overpriced like that ($20 vs €30, and $20 vs €40), that seems to happen a little bit less nowadays in 2020 sets, while US still gets bad City prices. I know this is a 2021 thread, and I hope that US City prices get better (and an overall more consistent price between themes)
9. Of course it has nostalgia for many people, it lasted quite long in comparison to many themes nowadays. The first Classic Space style lasted from 1978 to 1987, with the open helmets, but a fairly similar style continued up to 1989 with Unitron/Blacktron-1/Space Police-1 I'm not saying that 90s space was vastly different, but it sort of was a soft reboot of sorts, with factions called Blacktron 2 and Space Police 2. So that's a legacy of more then 10 years of continued sets, very few current themes did that today, Ninjago being the first and only newer in-house theme that has a 10 year streak in 2021.
10. It's interesting how we see quite a few wingsuits in LEGO now (Nexo knights/Sky Police) clearly seems influenced by the developments in the 2010s until now in technological development in safer/sustained rocket suit flight. Especially people like Yves Rossy's style Wingpack. Also a lot more sets in recent years have minifigures using 1x2 tiles representing smartphones, and the appearance of more Electric cars, even Octan-E branded. Now, I wonder when the "Flying-V" shaped passenger airplane will appear in LEGO form, as that's the next potential future we're looking at for Aircraft design.
11. Perhaps I'm the opposite, as I had a large break from LEGO, sets from 2001-2016 have no nostalgic value for me. Still, there are certainly great sets among them, but I rather move forward with new sets myself. 80s and 90s are more my nostalgia era but I don't like second hand sets.
12. I'm not the one counting out City Space, the 2019 wave was very interesting, I didn't get the largest sets but I loved the people pack and the station sets, now I got a decent crew to man whatever Space base/vehicles I'll end up with. I don't consider it a " classic 70s-90s space era" theme but still a great modern take, and for City it was one of the better subthemes of recent times, even with some flaws like weird printed cockpits for the shuttle or rover sets (didn't get that one as I had the 2017 3-in-1 set) This one came even closer imo , but also came out 6 years later then 889. But yes, Classic Space certainly had some elements of what was possible, or thought to be possible then, just like now, we see a lot more LEGO Drones and Rovers compared to back then. I can also certainly see some of the Classic Space degins possibly being influenced by the Cold War era large rocket launchers, also media/movies played a role, a lot of Bond movies during that time (60s-early 90s) were about Soviet vs the West, or a space-based villain.
13. No specific person gave those 3-in-1 rumours. https://www.brickmerge.de/?filterTag=all&theme=Creator
14. Looks interesting, also would fit in Hidden Side
15. I know, that theme brought me back into LEGO after 15 years of not buying/getting any new sets. I personally loved it, except maybe now I rather see some more location based sets instead as there were lots and lots of vehicles in that theme. Still haven't taken the sets apart but I can see great sci-fi potential in the parts.
16. That's interesting , and weird, good find.
17. I highly doubt Microscale Hogwarts or Disney caused Castle to end, as they are very different. They are castles, but nothing of the sorts with knights. Even this set is more of a Castle-theme Castle then Hogwarts/Disney. It's suspicious it's rumoured to retire pretty soon however. Anyhow, I do think ninjago getting some location sets fairly frequently is still great.
18. Agreed, and LEGO even still does that concept in other themes, 2020 Ninjago connects to form a game board, 2018-2020 harry potter connects, and some 3-in-1 buildings did as well, so they haven't forgotten. The 2013 King's Castle walls could be re-arranged as well, there just hasn't been a classic castle theme since. Nexo Knights Fortrex could connect to the Library wall but they sadly never made more sets for that expansion. I never got many classic/80s/90s large spaceships but I loved seeing how they could connect and change as well in the manuals, like Space Police 2 Galactic Mediator or, Ice Planet Deep Freeze Defender. Some pictures I googled : I just like the idea of sets/modules connecting or be expandable, especially smaller ones with generic figures, because then you can get multiples. 80s Castle had several of those wall sections that could form larger walls, or expand onto the larger Castle sets. The concept of connectivity with Technic pins is still here in 2020, but the non-licensed Spaceship or Castle sets ulitizing it are not right now. Nexo Knights, City Space , LEGO Movie sets did have some modules, of mainly smaller ships that could attach or fly off. I loved Clay's Rumble Blade basicly being a 4-in-1 vehicle, with a flyer, 2 motorcycles and a gun platform with wheels.
19. It's 23 September in Europe / Denmark now so that's probably the reason. Would be a bit unfair to release it on timezones.
20. LEGO Legacy Heroes Unboxed just got a Space update, I don't play the game , but the screenshots certainly show the type of themes I love (Space Police 1 , Insectoids, Ice Planet , Blacktron 1+2 , Spyrius etc.) https://www.promobricks.de/lego-legacy-heroes-unboxed-space/109204/ That game feels like such a tease, having all those references but no LEGO sets to go with it.
21. For me , the cutoff is Insectoids, as that was the last classic space theme I owned before my 15 year LEGO break. I agree there certainly is a situation with a certain lack of "Classic-90s inspired Space" I stopped being interested in LEGO after 2000, probably due to age and other hobbies, but also LEGO themes going junior mode, or on hiatus for a few years had an effect , the Legends line wasn't even well known either. In fact Nexo Knights reminding me so much of Ice Planet , got me back into LEGO in the first place in 2016, the colors and more angled designs certainly got my attention much more then seeing Space Police 3 sets in a Club magazine. And yes I agree that City Space and LEGO Movie 2 didn't have that wide array of familiar colors to pick from, Benny's Space Squad certainly was the standout set. Maybe if I were more interested in LEGO Movie 1 I'd be back into LEGO sooner, but let's just say my interests were in the Warcraft universe for years at that time. And yes I am craving non-licensed Space and Castle sets as well, since Nexo ended. But Nexo still certainly brought amazing MOC potential partn moreso then City Space or LEGO Movie 2 did , too bad the Benny Garage set was a 4+.
22. Basicly most my Space sets have been from recent years only , 2016-now, and I agree the situation hasn't been all that terrible, it just hasn't been under a Space theme. I don't even collect Licensed so leaving those out, but as others have pointed out, beside Nexo Knights being a big source of neon orange and some bright green in 2016-2018, 2019 been a fairly big Space year. 2017 3-in-1 shuttle wasn't terrible either, tbh more interesting then the microscale shuttle of 2019. Now, one part I can be critical on, that many (but not all) recent space related sets have been fairly curved/rounded , so it's not really been Classic / 80s / 90s in style, even Space Police III looks very different to me. (Classic) Pirates were lacking more then Space in recent years imo (at least until 2020). And right now Castle is probably the lesser represented of all 3 classic subjects, but also got some fantasy infusions via Ninjago/Hidden Side. Agree on both, I don't like the more rounded space theme designs that much, especially not galaxy squad. I loved Insectoids and UFO (especially the smaller sets) and still like most of them more then the 2013 sets (even while the 2013 sets where during a no-lego period). Maybe part is nostalgia, but overall, the Insectoids/UFO figures were brilliant for their time, and considering the late 90s being a not so amazing LEGO period in themes like Town(Jr) Also, I agree on the licensed sets, I don't collect them, but I still can see great parts potential in Star Wars (sets like TIE Dagger), or Batwing for Space Mocs, but licensed should not be the must-go to for Space/Castle/Pirates. Parts like angled plates still are in many non-licensed sets, often used as roofs or sails (Pirate Ship , Haunted House , Elf Clubhouse etc), just actual airplanes themselves tend to use pretty prefab designs, meh. I still plan to make some more Classic/80s/90s inspired (Nexo) Spaceship MOC at some point but I'd have to take apart my sets first
23. Edit: I looked up, 60251: Monster Truck only has 55 pieces and isn't 4+, so maybe this is just a simple build when it's listed at 58 pieces. I just don't like those 4+ chassis pieces which is why I don't buy the sets. It's likely a construction flatbed truck which could be fairly simple.
24. I hope LEGO movie 2 was an exception of a theme where it was mixed, that theme even mixed minidolls and figures, and the fleshie minifigs were DC characters and Wizard of Oz. And in-house themes make different colored figures all the time, but to me there's still a difference between a fleshie and a fantasy skin color (robot/monster/creature/ghost etc) And fleshie Minidolls make 100% sense as they've always been like that, even Duplo has been for decades now, but to be fair, LEGO yellow minifigs+slab figures exist for 45 years now so are imo still a big legacy that can't be just replaced easily, and hopefully will never be in in-house themes.
25. Maybe there's some hope, 2015 had Juniors Garbage truck, while City got one in 2016, so both were on shelves for about 11 months during 2016. But there has been no non 4+ Garbage truck since for some reason, this 4+ one is nearing it's 2 years of being sold, which was the case for the 2015 set. Not sure why the 2016 normal garbage truck retired after less then a year. I do think a Garbage truck set for summer 2021 would make sense if they want to release a Shirley Keeper fig (or maybe one is part of City Center, we don't know). 2020 had the street sweeper, sort of functions as a mini-garbage truck, but not the exact same, as Town/City has it's seperate history of sweepers on shelves together with garbage truck sets, even in the same release years. Wouldn't surprise me if 60284 (Construction Truck?) is a 4+ Truck again, as it's listed as only 58 pieces, but that might make the 4+ garbage truck a bit more likely to retire. One of those 2 Fire Trucks likely is a 4+ set as well, especially the €20 set with less then 100 pieces, same price range as the 2019 Garbage Truck. And as for previous thoughts, I think the Beach set is actual rescue-Quad and not a Squad, probably a quad with a small trailer with either a Jetski or Stretcher, which are seen in real life , but also in other toys like Playmobil.
