  1. I assume the rule for IP already used in an ideas set has more to do with how they internally evaluate the IP. For GB and BTTF, they probably designed multiple ideas beyond the initial set. So most new ideas sets would have probably already been evaluated.
  2. For set I would go with the Robot Command Center. I know some people hate it but something about it inspires me. It why I've built three other Robot Command Centers, have a fourth as digital model and have been thinking of how to build a fifth. If you include MOCs, I don't know. I like my Raccoon Car and M:Tron Enterprise but both have flaws that should be cleaned up.
  3. If you like open source, you should be advocating for ldr or mpd files not ldd lxf files. :) You should check out Rebrickable. It has instructions for many MOCs and if you upload the parts you have it can find what you can build. Some MOC instructions are for sale but a lot are free. Even those for sale have parts list so you might be able to figure out how to build it.
  4. Try things out. Not everyone works the same way. See what works best for you. For my biggest MOCs (which aren't very big), I started by prototyping key features I wanted. For Roon's Raccoon Car, that meant fiddling with gears until the tail spun as it moved forward. It meant looking at the face of a raccoon from a google search. The first raccoon face design didn't work right so I had to spend time reworking it. After getting those two pieces I figured out how to attach them together and built the rest of the vehicle around it. Not everything I originally envisioned made it into the design. I originally wanted a grappling hook instead of a ladder but realized that the spinning tail made that problematic. For my M:Tron Enterprise I built part of the saucer and nacelle. I decided I didn't have enough pieces to build what I wanted and stopped. The next day I decided to keep going anyway. It's not exactly what I envisioned but it was nice to figure out how to build it with what I had. I do use digital tools (leocad in particular) but only after the fact. I tend to build everything I can and then build a digital model. For the raccoon car, I polished it in there and ordered the parts to complete it. For the Enterprise, I ran low on the right pieces towards the end so I searched for the pieces in the model and figured out different combinations that could free that piece to be used elsewhere.
  5. I'm looking to find hidden gems not necessarily popular ones. Granted most comments doesn't guarantee popularity. I found this police station with a large number of comments despite little support.
  6. If you don't watch Lego Ideas every day, how can you learn about interesting projects? We have the new worst of ideas blog. Is there a blog to showcase cool project? So far I've looked occasionally and sometimes do searches. I've looked at those who follow me which does uncover interesting projects sometimes. Lego does have the staff picks which might be considered a blog showcasing cool projects.
  7. The only way to make Mickey Mouse and company acceptable to me is to do something like Kingdom Hearts and keep them out of it for the most part. :)
  8. I must say I wish Lego didn't make the Disney minifigures. They aren't bad or anything. It just that I was given a Daisy Duck and my youngest just got Mickey Mouse. Now he wants to play Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. I really dislike that show.
  9. At a Lego Movie event, they had a diorama type thing to allow you to take a picture of your creation in Bricksberg. I'm just not sure how many people would use a poster like you describe. It probably would be more useful to release an image file online. Then people could take a picture against a solid color, remove it from the image and add the background image.
  10. Design a really great project. Try appealing to communities outside of Lego groups. Most projects don't reach anywhere close to 10K. Don't expect to suddenly develop a working strategy that everyone has missed. Instead expect to work at promoting your project in an attempt to reach 10K. If your project doesn't succeed, try again with a different design. (In fact that might be needed while your project is trying to reach 10K as it may cause people to look at your other projects.) Frankly you need to enjoy the building process because your chances of success are low. My project has a low chance of success but I've still been working on a stop motion video for it. Not because I expect it to turn the tide and suddenly generate thousands of supporters but because it is fun.
  11. It's well done but I feel it misses some of the neat features of the original. Specifically I would still like the smaller vehicles that attach to it (although it doesn't have to be between it's legs). The treads are great. I'd like to redo the set as well but so far have gotten a chance. I'm torn between doing treads like the original implied or making the legs move.
  12. I know I have a problem. Batbot Command Center seemed like a cool idea. Pirate Robot Command Center is a little weirder. But yes I can go overboard: Brickfair NE is having a friends contest. I won a friends set during bingo. So I built yet another Robot Command Center with pieces of the new set and some other pieces. I only have the one picture I took at the moment. The flying vehicle is a space dolphin which doesn't hold together as well as I'd like. On the back is a rocket with another space dolphin.
  13. I'd generally prefer Blondie-Wan approach. I'd much rather the filtering were improved than attempt to get unlikely projects off the site.
  14. Give it a try and ask for suggestions. My builds still tend for an older style because I'm still figuring things out. I recommend the various Lego Ideas books. I recently tried to recreate one of the builds from Cool Creations in 101 Pieces. I didn't have the exact pieces but even looking at the picture I am uncertain how he got it to work. My creation isn't the same but still successful I think.
  15. I have encountered this problem. I purchased what I considered a large collection on ebay. It was older bricks. (I was hoping to construct the Robot Command Center.) I quickly found a large number of pieces and colors I didn't have.
  16. I do have to say I found this one pretty funny. Yeah it's not going to get made. Sometimes I do find the bad ones disappointing. Not because they are bad. Just that they got that many supporters. (Granted none of the ones listed above are doing that well.)
  17. Nice design. Thanks for the various pictures of the building process. As someone who yet to build anything of that size, it nice to see how large ships like this are constructed.
  18. Ruined Castle is a MOC I built to calm me one night.
  19. It is. Your comment led me to wonder what other MOCs have done with it. Searching for M-Tron, I found a drilling machine using it and a ship or two. Rebrickable doesn't having any MOCs using it. But it did show me that it comes in more colors. Still not used in MOCs. All the other sets use it as a building piece. I didn't even realize that was the purpose of the piece.
  20. Well the dinning room table is covered by my kids legos. The kitchen table has a smaller number of legos so we can still eat on it. The train table is covered with my kids legos. So the floor is pretty much what I'm left with. :)
  21. I decided to put aside the vision in my head. Instead I focused on using the pieces I had. After some trial and error, I finished the saucer section. For the transparent cockpit piece, how it is connected has remained the same as Lego's design. I just don't have a better idea for attaching it. The second nacelle was much harder because I liked the finished design of the first one. I put together every I could but still only had a skeleton of the nacelle. I eventually removed some of red pieces inside the bottom hull on the ship that can't be seen. The nacelle is currently missing four visible pieces (although two pieces I do have are not attached).
  22. After I saw Octus Deborge's Classic Space Star Trek ships on mocpages, I wanted to use my M-Tron pieces to do something similar. I really should do a different group than Federation but I wanted to build an Enterprise. Unfortunately I've run out of pieces in the right color at the moment. It's not as big as I would like. I have the Kre-O Enterprise and I wanted my M-Tron version to be as big but it isn't currently. I thought the big transparent piece from the M-Tron Mega Core Magnetizer would be good for the saucer section. Right now it is using the exact same connection method as that Lego set. I simple wasn't sure how to attach the thing. I may redesign it latter. This is the first nacelle. I don't have the pieces to build the second. It has an opening like the Kre-O ship mainly because I wanted to use the hinge piece.
  23. Nope. I designed ths at the end of 2014. Metalbeard was the inspiration for the changes.
  24. My youngest son liked my robot command center. I built a Batman one for my oldest. My youngest is into pirates so I had to make a pirate robot command center. Unlike the Batbot Command Center I didn't create a story to go with this one. I decided against giving it a rocket on the back.
  25. For the past two years, we have included a small moc as a party favor for my son's birthday. Because it is being given away the price needs to be low (under $5 each). Last year my son requested an x-wing which can have a minifigure sit on it. This year he has requested a Star Wars land vehicle. Ideally I should probably use something from the new movie but I can't think of a land vehicle from the movie that I really like. I debated trying a creature from the arena in the prequels but the price limits the available articulation and I didn't feel any of them would be satisfactory. The tauntaun has the advantage of walking upright and not really needing articulate arms. A google search discovered Dave Eaton's Echo Base. I'm not 100% sure how his tauntauns are implemented but mine needed a reduced piece count anyway. This is my current attempt. I've tried to come up with better horns but haven't found anything as cheap. I've built a prototype in colors I have available to test it's strength. The current version holds together very well.
