  1. I feel like I'm in the wrong place. I think I spent $200 on legos for myself in 2 years. No where close to the budget many of you have spent.
  2. A merger between the two companies probably means nothing. This is a merger between Hasbro and Mattel not Mega Bloks and Kre-o. Mega Bloks and Kre-o are just along for the ride. It will probably lead to lot of confusion and dysfunction for some time. If the combined company put more focus and money into building block toys that might make a difference but I don't see that happening. This is two giant companies not making enough profit to satisfy the stock market. They are looking to make themselves look good to the stock market again.
  3. I'm given a demo of LeoCAD to a linux user group. Does anyone know of any impressive ldraw files? I'm thinking something large.
  4. The bust is nice. I've noticed other projects of yours on ideas because I was searching for rocket raccoon. All your busts are well done. I prefer sets you can play with over displays but my wife just displays things. I would have expected a higher piece count but I suppose I've never tried building a bust.
  5. I should have thought of that. Thanks.
  6. I know this is an old topic. The atlantis site is now gone. Does anyone have the instructions for the extra builds. I got the book for my son recently.
  7. For me, the snot techniques and tiles were different than I was used to. I wanted to get ideas on how to build so I got the latest Lego Idea book. I really enjoyed the Legoland Idea Book 6000 as a kid. You could buy sets or even look at instructions online or mocs to learn building techniques. One thing the idea book has going for it is that it helps you learn some of the names for pieces which can be a big help when talking to others. For parts I did Peppermint_M's suggestion of buying a collection from ebay. Because of that I don't have a lot of the pieces suggested in the first post. I recently purchased a whole bunch of 3 babboo leave plants because I couldn't make a good forest scene. Unfortunately they didn't have other plant parts.
  8. Your list is good but it isn't necessary for all AFOLs. Your list applies to people wanted to build MOCs. Some people also just build the Lego sets and display them. Others may want to make brick films or comics. Granted they will probably need to build MOCs for scenery and such but they don't have to. Even if you build MOCs, someone interested in building vehicles might not need plant pieces. Some MOCers do mosaics which don't need a lot of the pieces you suggest.
  9. True but even if you are 13 or older, you can be excited about posting the build you made with your dad. Sure they could post it on the galleries on lego.com or on the forums here or other moc sites but you might still believe your version has something to offer. You can't put in rules that will automatically weed out the bad projects. You will just get different bad projects that meet the new rules. You either have to decide you want someone to prejudge it before posting or live with the bad. A modest fee could eliminate some bad projects but I still think you would have people posting something you would deem as bad. The more sensible solution is provide good navigation on the site to find the best stuff.
  10. While I'd like projects to be easier to find, I wouldn't throw out all the projects that aren't viable. I remember seeing a project built by a father and son. Shortly before they put it on ideas, Lego released a set like their design. He initially wasn't going to post it but his son was expecting to post it. For crowdsourcing you will get a lot of bad ideas. Ideally Lego (or some other site) needs to present the data differently to make it easier to find the gems. Their emails might be an attempt to do this (although I don't think they do a good job).
  11. I frankly doubt there will ever be Wizard of Oz sets outside of dimensions. They had a chance when it was up on Ideas (once or twice?). The problem I see with Wizard of Oz is that it probably be a set piece not a playset. All the Idea projects I've seen for it have treated it like that. They have done a Witch and Scarecrow in the CMF. I would expect them to do that for other characters in Wizard of Oz or maybe more dimension sets instead of a full Wizard of Oz set.
  12. Looks like it converts them to 660px by something. Not sure if there is a limit to the height. The duplo camel is 880px height that is the largest I know off. I don't think it matters too much because a tall image won't have a good small image for the project. I think it is more important that the small image attracts people. I took a look at your Lego Ideas projects. Why so many arena projects?
  13. For the small sets, me and my brothers would try to build them without looking at the instructions. Just using the pictures on the box. For a larger set that could still be fun but you might not reproduce the exact build since much more of the build is hidden from your view.
  14. Well some of my kid's legos are mine. When they just started getting legos, they incorporated the few sets I had. Once I purchased a big lot from ebay I kept those separate. I've used my kids' and wife's legos for occasionally during a night but put them back before I went to bed. I built Manbat's Rocket Blast with my son's set #76011 - Batman: Man-Bat Attack because the rebrickable contest required an alternate build for a current set between a certain size. For the Batrazor, I borrowed pieces to build the scene with poison ivy.
  15. This is why I don't use the social network sites. Such a waste of time. If you can't be happy in your own skin having thousands of unknown people friend/follow you, will not help.
  16. My son really liked playing with my Robot Command Center. He decided that Batman built. I questioned that since Batman only works in black and very dark gray. He explained that he was in his blue and gray suit. You can't beat that logic. For his birthday last year I recolored the Robot Command Center and built new mini vehicles. (Yes the Robot Command Center isn't everyone's favorite set. Some consider it one of Lego's worst sets.) But why would Batman build such a thing? He had to defeat Brainiac after the villian had defeated the other heroes. (It needs shots of the captured heroes and a better background but I've never gotten a chance to redo it. Obviously a more sophisticated Brainiac would be good too but I like what I managed with the bricks I had.)
  17. Do you follow people and/or support projects? I'm confused by the fact that I have more followers than supporters. Would you follow someone but not support their project? Why? Are people just hoping to find mutual followers? Do they decide they like my lego design skill but not the current project and hope I will post another?
  18. I've never really looked. If you are looking to recreate the exact set, even if it is cheaper to buy the pieces you may find the time/effort too much. Personally I wouldn't try to recreate the exact set. If a piece isn't visible from outside but is expensive, replace it with something equivalent. If the piece is visible but visible, determine whether you wouldn't mind if it was slightly different color. When I created the Batrazor as a birthday party favor, I made two different color versions because I got 50-50 split on which looked better and ordering the two colors was easier than finding all the pieces in one color.
  19. Can you post a link to your ideas project in your signature or is that not encouraged?
  20. If you have a rebrickable account, you can upload the ldd file to a private moc. From there you can easily order the bricks from bricklink or other sites. I often use leocad for polishing a design with pieces or colors I don't have. I prefer physical bricks generally because digital design doesn't tell you if it will hold together well.
  21. Nice set but I'm not looking forward to my son asking for it. Nor do I know where we would put it.
  22. When my son started playing with Lego, I found the new designs a lot different from what I remembered. I purchased the latest Lego Ideas book to learn more about current design. Like dr_spock, I also download instructions from the Lego site. For example I wanted to build a wall like those found on the Lion Chi Temple so I downloaded the instructions for the set. For parts I just purchased a large collection from ebay.
  23. I've only submitted one project. It was approved 3 days later. It was submitted on a Sunday but it was Christmas weekend. So it was a long weekend which could have meant more submitters. Or it could have meant less submitters due to the holiday. I too am curious about how long things take to get approved and how many are required to resubmit. You can look at the project numbers to see how many numbers are missing. I looked a little to see how close they were to rejecting or approving mine before it was finally approved.
  24. I don't have much trans red or blue. The gun should be trans blue not red since I figure they would be stealling regular chi. I did consider including some trans blue but kinda forgot. I'll have to think about where that can be put in.
  25. I had the advantage of a child who has been buying lots of legos. I've built things in odd colors using his bricks. Then when I get the design working, I make it in leocad so that I can put it in the color I want and possibly add some finishing details. I did that the past two years to create party favors for my son's birthday party. The collection I purchase on ebay is old and doesn't have the color variety available now which can make buidling things annoying.
