  1. 100% on board with your every single word. Speaking of how much more alert one is with paper versus screen, I've been working in the translation industry for 18 years and I know for a fact that not a single revisor, editor or proof-reader worth their salt is ever going to work on a major literary project (major in terms of artistic quality, not in terms of sales) on screen. When you work on screen your mind struggles horribly to keep up with all the intratextual links that keep the text together - and these links are arguably what separate quality writing from quantity writing.
  2. I'm just gonna follow this thread in awe Same when you start your next project, Nicjasno. You guys always break new ground
  3. A basic idea to make the side panels a little less blocky
  4. Any boom weight comparison pre and post mod? I'm pretty sure that simply switching from Control+ to BuWizz/PF will save a few hundred grams in the superstructure, just like it has in my carrier.
  5. Running more tests on the carrier while I wait for my parts to be delivered. Since I expect to make the superstructure lighter, too, I switched to 4 L motors (geared down 9:1), used more frames and fewer beams and managed to shave off another hectogram ( ). I was able to move the front and back panels back one stud and added a ladder. And just for laughs, this is what the carrier would look like in black and with dual tracks
  6. Thank you, Efferman! Wil try it as soon as my B&P and/or set arrive. Meanwhile I thought I'd see if the carrier was any good for a dual track mod. Seems it is, aside from the odd headache to keep the tracks stiff enough.
  7. Looks great to me Michael, any plans to redesign the side panels of the tracks?
  8. NEWS FLASH: It depends on how you want to use the model. Mine's going to be kidhandled on all sorts of terrain by my nephews and they also appreciate a certain speed, so four XLs with a 5:1 reduction is the way to go, as I learnt from seeing them playing with my telescopic crawler crane.
  9. I dunno, I prefer my pizza with a drizzle of Calabrian hot oil.
  10. I've found out that the only way to pry a proper answer out of them now is to fire vitriol.
  11. Love it And it's great to see you building again!
  12. Many people say the Earth is flat. The preliminary pictures of 42082 had no meter of comparison, so an untrained eye could be easily deceived. This video, on the other hand, shows how 42055, 42082 and 42100 are all quite close in size, with 42082 clearly being the densest build.
  13. A 4k part set is always gonna be hewge, unless you build a box full of half-bushes or your nickname is Sheo.
  14. Yeah, it's the kind of nitpicking the Dutch have a nice name for. I believe it involves ants.
  15. Only the M motor is (was?) available as part of a PF-only set.
  16. @Bartybum To your point, though (if I understood correctly), there are new and highly sought-after components that are (relatively) easy to integrate into existing or WIP builds, and TLG capitalises on them ana... uh, brilliantly by making them immediately available at extortionate prices. Think of the 20T clutch gear and the new driving ring extension when they came out, or the new XL actuator which sells for €10 a piece.
  17. I think Paul Boratko explained how gearboxes built using connectors instead of beams are very prone to unwanted friction since it's really hard to make the holes line up perfectly. In essence, you can follow the instructions to a T but you can't really account for that extra fraction of a millimeter between two connectors that throws the whole transmission off. Frustrating, I know.
  18. What he means is that first they provide play experiences; then, once a sufficiently profitable market has been created for certain components, they start selling them individually.
  19. Having tested the hell out of my four-motor prototye and tweaked it for torsional rigiditiy (not really necessary but OCD rules), I've started prepping the carrier. Stuck here until I get my grubby mitts on the actual set due to not having the sprockets and other parts in DBG. Also hoping someone with some sense of aesthetics (rules me out, of course) comes up with a mod for the side panels on the tracks - the set's panels are execrable.
  20. I've noticed this mostly with the 12-tooth half-bevel tan gears. Often, when assembling a differential, I have to go through five or six gears to find three that run smoothly.
  21. It might if you completely re-engineered it with a 8043-style gearbox and a backhoe shovel, but the performance would likely be pretty dismal.
