New Theme Being Announced at New York Comic Con 2014
Lyichir replied to Pheonix1604's topic in General LEGO Discussion
The one this Friday, or the Comic-Con announcement? Seeing as this Friday's announcement is practically confirmed to be Bionicle, I don't expect it to be the surprise theme at Comic-Con. It's possible, of course—a Comic-Con announcement would allow for more information on, say, media tie-ins, with Friday's reveal showing some of the sets. But I feel like that would undercut the Comic-Con announcement anyway, since while I'd certainly be happy with any and all info on the new Bionicle theme, the general public might be more interested in an exclusive announcement. Personally, I'm hoping Comic-Con announces the Elves theme. What we've seen of it suggests it'll be a story-driven fantasy theme like Ninjago, Chima, and presumably Bionicle, which could mean it'd merit its own TV series or similar media. The sets we've seen are gorgeous—even my teenage self would probably buy them despite their girliness—and I'm itching for more information. -
Wait... doing a countdown and skipping 3? LEGO HALF LIFE CONFIRMED.

The first one isn't a minifigure—it's a Galidor action figure. I guess a seller's either trolling or perhaps added some extra zeroes accidentally!

Intruiging Tweet from TLG-Apparent huge news is coming
Lyichir replied to ocifant's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Oh hush, wasn't the twofer of the Exo-Suit and Benny's Spaceship (not to mention the VIP minifig set) enough for you? Let us constraction fans bask in the attention for once. The news that one of Lego's longest-running retired themes is coming back is "disappointing?" Maybe to adult fans who ignored it for the past fifteen years... but believe me when I say that this news is going to make waves. The Bionicle community is already experiencing a surge of activity since the sets were first leaked, and this announcement over Lego's main social media accounts should get the attention of many, many more past, present, and future fans. -
Do the old body molds for the Speedorz fit on the new chassis? From what I've seen in reviews the new chassis looks like quite an improvement, but I do agree that the old body molds were far superior to the gross new ones...

I hope that's not the case. Mostly because I want the Bionicle reveal to be done all at once, or gradually on a teaser site, and NYCC to feature the grand debut of ELVES. I want new information about that theme so bad; the pics we've seen look GORGEOUS.

It's not the older shark—it's a redesign of the old shark that's been around several years. Less oversized than the newer shark, but much easier to attach to baseplates or other parts.

Islanders are a bit problematic when cast in an actual Lego theme. They push the story from a simplified one with orderly soldiers versus chaotic and lawless pirates to one that borders dangerously on real world controversies like the effects of European imperialism and racism. Indians in Western themes have similar issues—idealizing the old notion of "Cowboys vs. Indians" can have the effect of whitewashing a period of U.S. history marked by atrocities against an indigenous population. Licensed themes can avoid these issues since they're a part of staying true to the license, and the context of the movies they're based on generally leaves less room for ambiguity of the characters' depictions. And CMFs have the benefit of no context whatsoever—the Tiki Warrior does not necessarily interact with the Pirate Captain at all, let alone stand with or against him in a conflict with a Redcoat military. But I would be very surprised if we see Islanders playing as big a role in a Pirates theme as they originally did in this day and age.

This is, ironically, why I consider it even more "canon" than other crossover attempts. Because the canon of The Lego Movie is, essentially, that there is no canon—that the interaction between themes is shaped entirely by the stories fans tell with the products. That fits perfectly with the long history of inconsistent crossovers in Lego. In any case, I wasn't suggesting that it was canon to all other themes, but rather, that Clutch Powers' attempts at creating a singular canon would never be revisited, because it was unsuccessful and The Lego Movie was insanely successful, so any future attempts at a crossover movie are likely to be based on The Lego Movie or a new "canon," rather than a movie which will be remembered only as an obscure part of Lego's history like Lego Island or Jack Stone. Don't get me wrong: I liked Clutch Powers, even if The Lego Movie was ultimately better. It was a decent movie. But it had no staying power when it was released to lackluster reviews and I had no illusions that its crossover was any more canon than Lego Universe, Lego Racers, or any other. But anyway! Back to Ultra Agents. The new sets are great. I don't think I'll get many, just like I haven't gotten any of this year's. But it seems to be following admirably in the original Agents theme's footsteps by providing a colorful cast of engaging villains and plenty of awesome sets.

Um... no. Clutch Powers clumsily appropriated models from the above theme in a context completely separate from those themes' canon stories. The Power Miners didn't appear, but Power Miners sets did. Clutch drove the Agents Turbocar despite not being a member of the Agents organization, but rather a "Lego" organization which, unsurprisingly, has never appeared in any non-CP media or sets. Clutch & his teammates went to space in Mars Mission uniforms but a Space Police ship. The Space Police were around in the first place, despite the theme "canonically" taking place in the future of both Lego City and Classic Space. The Lego Magazine comic that crossed Atlantis, Pharaoh's Quest, Monster Fighters, Alien Conquest, and Dino was no more canon to those individual themes or Clutch Powers than previous Lego Magazine crossovers. You can keep saying that Lego themes form a singular canon linked by Clutch Powers, but it's just not true. Clutch Powers used other themes' sets out of convenience and its "canon" (which was independent of the stories of the themes it appropriated) was abandoned pretty quickly. You're linking those themes together based on the assumption that there is a singular canon, but there isn't, and crossovers are done out of convenience, not out of any grand unifying theory. We will never see "Omega" (a villain named so ambiguously due to not existing in any concrete form) in a set, and Ultra Agents has nothing to do with Clutch Powers any more than the classic Agents theme did.
-
There is no "official Lego canon" and Clutch Powers' canon is not related to that of other movies and themes (besides MAYBE the shout-out in Ninjago). Almost every Lego crossover story has established a new canon for how the themes interact, and Clutch Powers' canon is no more "official" than Lego Universe's, Lego Racers' or that of the old Lego Maniac comics in the Mania Magazine. In the canon of actual sets and themes, Lego Castle is not on a separate planet from other themes, Space Police does not take place at the same time as Lego City, Lego is not a peacekeeping organization, and there is no "Omega" behind the scenes pulling the strings behind major villains of various themes. Clutch Powers was not a particularly successful movie and as such the canon it was trying to establish has been all but abandoned. It doesn't matter that the Lego Movie's canon contradicts it—its focus on Lego as an actual toy was a far more well-received take on how Lego themes interact, and Lego is much more likely to return to that idea in future crossover movies than to dredge up the weird canon of Clutch Powers which most Lego fans aren't even aware of.

They're actually referring to the Gatling variation on the stud shooter which appears in many of next year's Bionicle and Star Wars sets. It seems to fire multiple rounds simply by rotating the barrel, which is much more efficient than the single-stud shooters which have to be manually reloaded after every shot (not that they're not all amazing launchers).

I actually think it's Lavender—a fairly rare newer color that's appeared occasionally in several Friends sets (most prefer to use the darker shade, Medium Lavender). It seems to also be used in much greater quantities in the Friends house for next year.

Genwunner is a term originating in the Transformers fandom, referring to people who swear by the original ("Gen 1") toys and cartoon and decry everything that came afterwards as garbage. It's applicable to other fandoms, too, like Pokémon or Bionicle. In any of those cases it refers to people who are so blinded by nostalgia that they're unwilling to accept new developments in their favored franchises. Lego doesn't do preorders, but that shouldn't be a problem—we'll be some of the first to know when these become available, so no need to worry about stores running out before you get a chance at them or anything.

NYC has the benefit that not only does it feature many architectural landmarks, but most of them are globally recognizable (thanks in part to the mass export of American media). There are many amazing and unique architectural landmarks in other parts of the world, but I doubt they're as well known globally, especially by the coveted (but often undereducated) American market.

Don't think Lego's in any hurry to resolve the plot of a fairly unsuccessful direct-to-DVD movie. Especially now that The Lego Movie has provided a much more well-received grand unifying theory of Lego themes.

I think you're right, Deevee. At the very least, I hope you are. Seriously, it would not be a lot of work to 'shop some shimmery shiny magic energy around a front-view render of the Ignika. So it's not as much of an indication that the story will revolve around it as people are suggesting. Meanwhile, we've seen a brand new mask that will seemingly be the face of the franchise on Lego.com—one that doesn't represent any of the ones in sets...

Pretty sure that the figs are not finalized. But it would be awesome to get a battle pack that's all ladies!

YES. This is exactly what I was hoping for when I heard it was Swamp Police. Hovercrafts, airboats, pontoon helicopters and hillbilly crooks. Love these designs. The construction stuff looks a little spotty but I like some of it. The truck carrying off the in-use porta-john is a nice touch. Also, FINALLY a Lego City Snowplow. The new parts used for the plow look epic and I can't wait to see what else they can be used for.

Dark. Red. Masonry bricks. People can say what they like about the set designs. But the forts, at least, use actual building elements for their detailing instead of oversized printed or stickered wall panels. That's a win in my book.

This theme is freaking amazing. Elf people with elemental powers? Treehouses? Yachts? Purple foliage? I have high hopes for this. It all looks so incredible. I love it.
-
I can't imagine they'd change Lewa's element in a continuation. The Mask of Life is probably just a placeholder; after all, we've already seen a different shiny, legendary-looking mask on an unwatermarked image.

I would actually suspect that the color schemes could very easily change between now and the actual reveal. By this point in the sets' development (or rather, the point at which the preliminary art was created, a while ago), they've probably decided what sort of molds they'll introduce for each character and what most characters' builds will be like. But color schemes are something that can be changed very easily if, for instance, focus group testing shows that kids responded better to a slightly different color scheme. I don't expect ANYTHING to change too dramatically... but stranger things have happened.

Well, firstly, there's the question of whether you'd get a snake planet or just a bunch of teeny-tiny dirt snakes. Secondly, I would question the tactical advantage a snake-planet would have (depending on how dramatic the transformation is, it could be anywhere from "hardly any different" to "more suicidal than awakening the Devourer). Thirdly, the ground tastes terrible.

Don't think new blood is going to prevent fights—if anything, it might hasten them. But it will almost certainly replace the people who have left for one reason or another, and more importantly, add new perspectives to a fandom which has become more and more like an echo chamber. For that reason I welcome the fresh ideas of a new generation of fans.
