LEGO Elves 2017 Discussion
Lyichir replied to Peppermint_M's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Rosalyn is presumably the name of the unidentified elf character from the new trailer. None of these names really indicate the presence of the dragon, though of course it could appear in any of the three sets without necessarily being the main subject (like the Wind Dragon in the Dragon Sanctuary). -

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Lyichir replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I certainly don't see Lego repeating the 48-stud size in the near future, since Lego probably wouldn't want to release something that competes with the Assembly Square at that higher price point. Another 48-stud modular might happen in 5 or 10 years to mark the next modular anniversary, but I don't see them doing so so soon. As for a 16-stud modular, I would be a little skeptical of that as well, considering it'd likely seem mediocre in comparison to the others to many buyers. Though maybe they could make it work if it were a very unique and desirable sort of business... maybe that'd be the chance to finally get a modular Lego store? All in all I don't know whether "evening out" the series is an immediate priority for Lego. Most buyers probably don't have enough of the modulars to put together a full block in the first place, after all. And even many people who are dedicated modular collectors don't necessarily display them as full blocks, after all—it's much more space-efficient to just line them up, since that way they can fit on a shelf instead of needing a large table. For the time being, people who want to make a full block might have to resort to the same tactic they had to use before there were four separate corner buildings—that is to say, making their own. -
I'd actually disagree with that notion—even if it is one of the main selling points of the Fun in the Park set, the minifig variety alone is a huge part of its appeal for general audiences. More to the point, Lego tends to like to reuse new molds like that to offset their cost. So it would surprise me greatly if we didn't see that wheelchair used again in the near future. That said, I don't know what sort of City set it'd be most likely to appear in. Possibly a large set like a school, bus station, or hospital? As a bonus, that'd keep the Fun in the Park set valid as a cheaper option for getting a fig in a wheelchair. As a side note, I'd love to see the next modular (whatever that may be) include a fig in a wheelchair and be wheelchair-accessible as well, since so many of the modulars rely on regular stairs for getting around or even getting into the buildings.

The LEGO Batman Movie Set/CMF Rumors & Discussion
Lyichir replied to Sir Gareth's topic in LEGO Licensed
I don't see where anyone gets any idea that the Batgirl polybag would be any sort of brick-built figure... if anything, the fact that the manual attached to it seems to only include adverts and the like instead of actual instructions suggests to me that it'll be a regular sort of figure at best, possibly even a glued one like a keychain that doesn't require any sort of assembly. -

Have you taken (or seen) a picture with Macy using that hair? I'd love to see what it looks like! -
I doubt it, since that comes out in August. Most early releases for VIPs are a month or so ahead of the actual release date, not a full half a year.

LDD dual colored tiles
Lyichir replied to SNIPE's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
No. I believe in the case of that part, and the older parts where that used to be possible, it was a result of LDD treating printable surfaces (that is, surfaces that decorations could potentially be applied to) as recolorable surfaces (surfaces that can have their entire color changed). In some cases, that's probably deliberate (for simple, single-color prints like the metallic armor on the fantasy castle giant troll make more sense as a recolorable surface than as a decoration, particularly considering the color varies between different versions of the figure), but in the case of tiles like that I'm skeptical that their entire top surface would ever be printed in such a way (at the very least, I would not expect the printing to stretch edge-to-edge). -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Lyichir replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I'm not a fan of the somewhat prescriptivist notion that all modular buildings have to fit in in a particular time period, particularly one that is so dated. Like the ridiculous theory that each modular foreshadows the next one in some way (which I thankfully haven't seen bandied about much lately), it strikes me as an attempt to see an explicit pattern where none has really been stated. And like the constant whining about which Star Wars sets are "true" UCS sets, it uses a "No True Scotsman" approach to disregard any sort of contrary evidence (like the computer in the Town Hall, the glass-fronted beverage coolers in the Green Grocer, or the Café Corner box in Assembly Square) by insisting that those models are not legitimate parts of the series. Many of the modulars do seem to draw influence from a particular style and period of architecture (like the Detective's Office, which clearly draws from prohibition-era subjects), but that doesn't mean that they all must conform perfectly to one particular time period, any more than they have to conform to one specific geographical region. -
Latest impact of other themes on historic themes
Lyichir replied to Wardancer's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Nothing in the definition of Castle that excludes "cutesy" (though personally I see a design like this as "elegant" or "majestic" more than cute). Besides, it's not like minifigures themselves aren't "cutesy" to a certain extent. -

I can definitely see the possibility of getting repeats of main characters if their outfits change, but if they don't then I would probably expect them to be replaced by new characters. I would certainly be happy to get a Rey that lacked the bulky headwrap from the original figure. -
LEGO Elves 2017 Discussion
Lyichir replied to Peppermint_M's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
So the Lego Elves website has been updated with a new background along with a teaser trailer for this year's Netflix series. The new series has a new style with the characters and settings looking more similar to the mini-dolls and sets themselves (though still using charming hand-drawn animation for the most part). But in terms of sets, it also offers a look at some of what we might see in the summer. In addition to some decent looks at the Goblin King's castle (which, if past years are any indication, is likely to be the largest set of the year), the trailer features a new character (most likely a water elf, judging by her appearance) with a new dark blue dragon, both of which may show up in the summer sets. -
Star Wars Constraction 2017 Discussion and Rumors
Lyichir replied to VBBN's topic in LEGO Action Figures
It's a consequence of the high density of new Star Wars movies being released. The only "legacy characters" we've gotten so far are the six figures that were initially released (in which the three villains seemed chosen deliberately to offer variety in the form a force-user, a droid, and a non-force-using human). Since then the only figures we've gotten have been tied in with new movies (The Force Awakens and Rogue One). It'd be nice to get figures based on characters from other media again but with a limited number of sets and one new movie each year the opportunity just hasn't presented itself. -
The Lego Elves website has updated with a new background based on the coming year's story and a teaser trailer for the new Netflix series! I had been sort of worried about them changing the charming 2D animation to soulless CGI or something like that. They did change it, but I'm actually quite happy with the results. The majority of the animation seems to still be hand-drawn, but the character models are now based on the actual mini-doll versions of the characters instead of the more realistic human-looking characters from previous years. The result is a series that ends up looking more obviously "Lego", but the animation is just as fluid and just as charming if not more so. All in all I'm more excited for the new series than ever! EDIT: Surprised there's not been any new discussion of this... well, just in case anyone's interested, here's a link to the teaser video on Lego.com. It hasn't been uploaded to YouTube yet, unfortunately (since the Lego.com video player can be a little clunky to use), but this links directly to the video itself in case people didn't notice it on the homepage.

Lego Games That You Expect (2016-2017)
Lyichir replied to PacmanRacing's topic in LEGO Media and Gaming
The X-Men game isn't going to happen (at least not the way you describe), because Lego's licensing agreement for the Marvel Super Heroes theme is with Marvel/Disney, not Fox (which produced all of the X-Men movies). Chronicles of Narnia probably won't happen unless Lego obtains the license for the next installment of the movie franchise, whenever that may be. Toy Story, on the other hand, could very easily happen when Toy Story 4 comes out (though that isn't until 2019).- 25 replies

[MOC] Magic Mountain Time Lab
Lyichir replied to sander1992's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
It's a good MOC, but by converting the exterior to a more ordinary house it not only loses some of the zaniness of the original set and theme, but also the titular "mountain". Perhaps situating it on a more dynamic, mountainous landscape instead of a level street would help it to maintain more of the essence of the original set. -
The LEGO Batman Movie Set/CMF Rumors & Discussion
Lyichir replied to Sir Gareth's topic in LEGO Licensed
Interesting thing about that bunny Batman—if it is indeed released as a regular fig, it seems like it'll be the only Batman whose mask is printed on the face rather than necessitating the separate cowl piece. That might be useful for anyone who is interested in creating their own Batman variants with alternate headgear. -
Not really. The BrickHeadz fill a very different niche than any of those others, as standardized static figurines (that are buildable, to boot). Constraction figures are the closest things to what the BrickHeadz represent, but are not necessarily a good fit for all themes (for instance, more realistically proportioned Ninjago figures would be bizarre given that the characters have really only been represented in the more stylized minifigure forms) and are substantially different from the BrickHeadz in both form and building experience.

Star Wars Constraction 2017 Discussion and Rumors
Lyichir replied to VBBN's topic in LEGO Action Figures
It's possible that we might get a Saw figure if we ever get a wave based on the Rebels cartoon, since Saw is apparently coming to that show as well. I think figures like the Shoretrooper get figures over named characters with more prominence largely to provide some sense of balance between "good guys" and "bad guys". Rogue One has very little in the way of named villains who can really go toe-to-toe with the rebel heroes in battle. Krennic never uses anything but a small blaster, Tarkin never wields any sort of weapon at all (well, unless you count the Death Star, but you can't exactly put that in a set), and Vader's already been depicted. -

As cool as that would be, there's no visible drive shaft that could lead from the propellor up top to the area below the deck where the wing function is housed. I'm figuring whatever activates the wing function is located behind the airship's main deck, since that's the main area we can't see in any of the pics we've gotten. -

I'm still curious how the flapping wing function of the airship works. An auto-flapping function as you push it along the ground might be too much to hope for, but what is there instead? A gear? A push button? Can't wait until we get some alt pics that'll hopefully clear that up. -

Lyichir replied to Peppermint_M's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Assuming we even need a separate topic like that (considering the movie-based sets and TV-based sets don't seem like they'll overlap significantly), why put it in licensed themes? It's based on an in-house theme, not an external license, and while putting it in the licensed themes forum would allow it to be in the same place as The Lego Batman Movie, I don't see that as being that important considering that The Lego Movie went in Special Lego Themes as far as I can remember. -
I doubt any of that sort of plot-related crossover is necessary for the Lego Batman Movie to feature those characters. After all, the Lego Batman Movie already takes place in the world of The Lego Movie, facilitating crossovers with different "realms" without having to involve a separate video game continuity. For that matter, those scenes could be from a hallucination or dream sequence (for instance, if the realm-hopping Batman gets affected by Scarecrow's fear toxin).

Never. Mattel is not only one of Lego's biggest competitors but wholly owns Mega Bloks. Skeletor and He-Man are already represented in Mega Bloks' "Kubros" series of buildable figurines, and if they ever decide to make any sorts of buildable playsets you can be sure that that will likewise be done under the Mega Bloks brand.

The LEGO Batman Movie Set/CMF Rumors & Discussion
Lyichir replied to Sir Gareth's topic in LEGO Licensed
Kind of. Personally, I don't mind. My first exposure to a lot of Batman villains was a set of McDonald's Happy Meal toys from the '90s where pretty much every character was given some sort of zany vehicle that fit with their overall theme. This just strikes me as continuing that grand tradition.
