LEGO Elves 2017 Discussion
Lyichir replied to Peppermint_M's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
I would've guessed her husband, but I suppose brother is possible too! -
Disney is never going to buy Lego. That idea gets floated all the time but not only would it be bad for Lego (which would suddenly have a heck of a lot more trouble negotiating licenses with Disney's competitors, including Warner Bros.), but it'd also be bad for Disney (which very well might similarly have trouble working with Lego's competitors, including Mattel and Hasbro). It's a lose-lose situation. That said, now that Disney Infinity is kaput, there is absolutely nothing stopping Disney characters from being included in Lego Dimensions even without having ownership of Lego (besides the obvious factor of the time it takes to work out the licenses and put products to market). If Lego Dimensions extends beyond the planned year three (or possibly even if it doesn't), it may well get a chance to incorporate Disney characters and franchises.

LEGO Dimensions Physical Brick Discussion
Lyichir replied to Transparency for Effect's topic in LEGO Licensed
That's a consequence of those being the dual-molded legs. The inside and back aren't printed—the entire lower half of each leg is molded in white plastic. The red parts are printed over that on the front and sides,, but apart from that Team GB figure I can't find any evidence of the inside of minifigure legs being printed, much less printed with a discrete pattern (in fact, the Team GB fig's inner leg printing does not even seem to line up perfectly with the outside based on the Eurobricks review).- 527 replies

Man, if they really were willing to bring back an in-house theme like Power Miners, all bets would be off. Lego City Undercover is the only in-house franchise in Year 2 (unless you count The Lego Batman Movie, which is debatable), and of course Lego City is an evergreen theme that is one of Lego's most consistently popular. Personally, though, I reckon that that tweet might just be an effort not to give fans of that theme a flat "no" (letting them down easy, so to speak). If the possibility did exist to bring back a non-current in-house theme, Bionicle would obviously be at the top of my list (even though, logistically, it would be more challenging to implement than an already minifigure-based theme like Power Miners). Of course, if that doesn't happen, then I expect the sets to continue to draw from major Warner Bros. franchises, nostalgia-laden movie and TV franchises in general, video games, and the occasional high-profile ongoing Lego theme (licensed or otherwise). In terms of Warner Bros. franchises, we're likely to continue to see DC Super Heroes characters from one medium or another, and if Year 2 is any indication, popular Cartoon Network shows (of which my highest hopes are for Steven Universe packs). In terms of video games we probably still won't see any franchises exclusive to any of the "big three" console manufacturers, but franchises owned by third-party publishers like Capcom or Sega (among many others) are still fair game. And while Year 2 has been very light on the in-house themes, I'm still holding out hope that themes like Friends, Elves, and Nexo Knights will eventually be included in the game.

LEGO Ninjago 2017 Discussion
Lyichir replied to Peppermint_M's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Maybe... but I almost wish the lever were somewhere on the front instead of on the back, so that you could link up four of them like you could with this set. -
They're decent, but for more obscure colors (or color blends) they can be fairly inconsistent. Their glow-in-the-dark categorization is mostly good, but when you get into things like metallic colors, they have a nasty tendency to lump even wildly different colors together (as discussed here or here). That's part of why I generally prefer Brickset, which uses information directly from Lego's customer service site and as such is generally much more accurate about what colors parts actually come in.

The LEGO Batman Movie Set/CMF Rumors & Discussion
Lyichir replied to Sir Gareth's topic in LEGO Licensed
Jeez, that was one of the saddest excuses for a review I ever read. In fact, I'm surprised, because I had known FBTB to be one of the better reviewers for licensed sets in general (even for non-Star Wars reviews, I'd seen them put in the extra research to give even licensed themes that are generally less popular with AFOLs a fair shake). For this, either they thought they were being clever or just didn't care, since we've had the actual official names of these figs for a while and the ones drawn from DC Comics lore are easy to find information about online. -
LEGO Nexo Knights 2017 Discussion
Lyichir replied to Peppermint_M's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Probably not, since Lego can't cast a fig entirely in transparent colors. Polycarbonate parts bind to each other chemically and the result is that a fig cast entirely in that color would have far too much friction on its joints (whereas just having transparent arms or legs is fine, because then the only connections are between ABS and polycarbonate). -
LEGO Ninjago 2017 Discussion
Lyichir replied to Peppermint_M's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Reinventing traditional standards like the headwrap and sword molds could make sense in the context of a big-deal theatrical movie. The headwraps especially—they might be able to "cheat" with regular CGI art, but it's not as easy with the pseudo-stop-motion style of The Lego Movie and its spinoffs, so a new mold that can rotate farther would go a long way toward making the animators' jobs a lot easier. There shouldn't be any issues with fragility, since there are plenty of helmet designs that have a thinner chinstrap than the ninja scarf. The swords are a less essential change, but could conceivably be helpful in terms of keeping track of individual characters in fight scenes, especially when they all seem to be wearing similarly-colored outfits. -
The LEGO Batman Movie Set/CMF Rumors & Discussion
Lyichir replied to Sir Gareth's topic in LEGO Licensed
Those weren't based on a single movie, though. I would be skeptical of the idea that there might be a second Lego Batman Movie series, if only because I expect the theme to be on the wane next year with fewer, smaller new sets if any (as we saw with The Lego Movie, despite that theme's enormous popularity). -
294 Phosphorescent Green was also slightly translucent (which unfortunately, made parts like the ghost shroud look less impressive IMO). And some Bionicle parts from 2007 blended Phosphorescent Green with Trans. Light Blue to create parts which gave off a faint bluish glow after being exposed to light.

LEGO Nexo Knights 2017 Discussion

Will Chima return to the world of LEGO
Lyichir replied to brickmerchant114's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
It's hard to think about the future when any future for the theme is so unlikely in the first place. After a certain point if Chima were to ever return, it would most likely be as a reboot rather than a continuation of the same story. And in that case I would probably expect it to focus largely on many of the same tribes that were covered in the theme originally, perhaps with the inclusion of tribes like Rhinos, Beavers, and Bears who were in the story from the start but didn't debut in the sets until later. -
The position and future of Friends and minidolls in Lego?
Lyichir replied to Dorayaki's topic in General LEGO Discussion
The latter falls more on Bricklink for not having the foresight to create separate categories for mini-doll parts in the first place. As for stop-motion... it is an issue. I would not be opposed to Lego updating the mini-doll to have individually articulated legs in future years (provided they could keep the figures looking just as good). Then again, I have to wonder if the longer, legs would look half-decent in a walk cycle anyway, considering that they don't bend at the knee and might look more awkward than the more abstracted minifigure legs do. -
LEGO Nexo Knights 2017 Discussion
Lyichir replied to Peppermint_M's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
To be honest I can't help but be a little reminded of my Atlantis MOC from a few years back, Rise of the Dread Colossus. The similarities in concept are uncanny (villain uses collectibles to awaken a giant monster), though obviously I'm not suggesting Lego got their idea from a losing contest entry from over five years ago. -
Nowhere in my post did I say you had to like Nexo Knights. But assuming that because as a Castle purist you don't personally like Nexo Knights, the theme will be completely forgotten apart from diehard fans within a few years after its discontinuation? Yeah, that does seem a little small-minded to me. Keep in mind that the market for Lego, up to and including themes like Nexo Knights, is larger than it's ever been. And today's kids will inevitably become tomorrow's AFOLs. As such, I would not be surprised to see high-quality themes from today like Ninjago or Nexo Knights remembered as fondly if not moreso than themes from my childhood like Adventurers, Rock Raiders, or Bionicle, or stretching back further, themes from older fans' childhoods like classic space and classic castle. It's not unlikely that certain Nexo Knights parts, sets, and figures will be sought-after commodities the way that many classic parts, sets, and figures are today. And yes, I do expect that someday far in the future we'll probably be seeing AFOLs building "Neo-Nexo Knights" MOCs the same way we see MOCs based around older themes like M-Tron or Ice Planet 2002 or Rock Raiders or Forestmen.
-
I mean, "nostalgia" is one of the only reasons to like any older themes. Let's not kid ourselves, Lego design is constantly evolving, and apart from nostalgia or dissatisfaction with current products, there's very little reason for anyone to seek out any retired theme when newer and more advanced models are readily available. But if you want, I'd be willing to bet that Nexo Knights WILL in fact be remembered much more fondly than Knights' Kingdom II sets (which unlike Nexo Knights sets were heavily simplified for younger builders)—especially if Lego never takes such a bold, experimental direction with Castle again. Sure, Castle purists may hate it and continue to hate it until the end of time, but I believe the vast majority of Lego fans aren't that small-minded as to discount a theme's merits entirely just because it doesn't fit neatly into one category or another.

What future LEGO Movies would you like to see happen?
Lyichir replied to Realshow's topic in LEGO Media and Gaming
It's not about how big Lego is or isn't, or how successful it would be. It's about what would be the first Doctor Who movie in years being an adaptation of an adaptation—two levels removed from the core franchise itself. Would the BBC want a movie that could very well be many international viewers' first exposure to Doctor Who as a franchise to be a tongue-in-cheek adaptation of a series of Doctor Who toys? I mean, when I think about it, maybe so! Maybe that hook would be what it'd take to elevate the brand to much greater international popularity. But it's certainly a very roundabout way of doing so, and I can't think of many other franchises that have gone that route. When I say "odd" I don't necessarily mean "bad". But it would be highly unusual at the very least.- 97 replies

Will Chima return to the world of LEGO
Lyichir replied to brickmerchant114's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
I think all three were successful to a certain extent, though of course I think the lower popularity of Chima as a whole did also translate to the Speedorz being less popular as well. And as "gimmicks", none of them really lasted more than a year or two before Lego moved on to the next big thing. The spinners were a VERY important part of Ninjago's development and launch. I've read that some of Lego's designers actually hoped for them to be so popular that they would be banned from schools (like Pokémon cards or other huge crazes). Ninjago's TV show probably also made an impact on its initial success, though keep in mind that it only really got a single TV special (and a series of online shorts) in the first year. It was the success of that special that led to it being picked up as a full, ongoing series (and apparently gave Lego the confidence to launch both Chima and Nexo Knights with full series from the get-go). -
I'm intrigued by your word choice. A "continuation" of Castle implies there's some sort of continuity, which in the Castle theme isn't really the case (although arguably, Nexo Knights could in fact qualify as such by virtue of its conceit as a sort of "alternate future" where feudal society and weaponry persisted into the far future even as technology advanced around them). But the evolution of the Castle theme since the '90s has been more of an iterative process, whereby the theme is completely reinvented every three or so years—from the pulpy, character-driven Knights Kingdom II, to the more traditional fantasy-based Fantasy Castle, to the more historical Kingdoms, to the 2015 Castle theme that was a very classic blend of history and fantasy. Viewed through that lens, Nexo Knights is just one more reinvention of the theme (albeit a much more extreme reimagining than any of its predecessors). And if the past is anything to go by, then after Nexo Knights ends the pendulum will most likely swing back toward something more traditional. I do also have to question the idea that there's "no use for the parts in traditional builds". Sure, the futuristic armor and weapons might be hard to use in a more traditional Castle MOC, but not only are the vast majority of the villains monsters and demons that would feel just as at home in a more traditional fantasy setting, but there's been an abundance of great parts that are not just great for Castle MOCs but for any number of themes (examples include this, this, or this).

What future LEGO Movies would you like to see happen?
Lyichir replied to Realshow's topic in LEGO Media and Gaming
Not really what I meant. Those were cameo appearances in a larger movie, not an entire movie based around a single franchise that hasn't had a theatrical movie in years. (and c'mon, the Speed Racer movie wasn't THAT long ago). ...Actually, come to think of it, the style and tone of the "Lego cinematic universe" would probably mean that a Lego Doctor Who Movie would probably recast most of the lead roles with other stars (particularly well-known comic actors) anyway. Which could certainly open up some interesting possibilities in itself. There are a fair number of well-regarded British actors/comedians who might not have the demeanor (or the availability) to play the Doctor in the ongoing series but might have the time and talent to fill the role in a Lego movie or two.- 97 replies

That could be cool... but I kind of wonder whether they'd do a Lego Doctor Who movie when they haven't even done a regular Doctor Who movie since the poorly received 1996 one. It'd be a little odd for the Doctor's grand return to the big screen to be as a minifigure.- 97 replies

What future LEGO Movies would you like to see happen?
Lyichir replied to Realshow's topic in LEGO Media and Gaming
Well, firstly, I wouldn't mind more movies like The Lego Batman Movie that feature some of the supporting characters from The Lego Movie in a lead role. The Lego Space Movie starring Benny? The Lego Pirates Movie starring Metalbeard? Sign me up. Untitled Unikitty Feature? I am practically already waiting in line at the theater. I'd also love to see the range of themes represented branch out. The Lego Friends Movie might seem like it'd be divisive, but if it could manage to deconstruct and reconstruct high school movie tropes (in a family-friendly manner) as effectively as The Lego Movie did with the classic hero's journey, it could be gold. And though the chances are remote, if Warner Bros. could work out deals with Disney akin to Sony's deal to incorporate Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, perhaps a Lego Star Wars Movie or Lego Avengers Movie could happen eventually. Heck, perhaps you don't even need a full movie in every case—The Master may have been intended to promote The Lego Ninjago Movie, but assuming that Warner Bros. Animation wants to continue including shorts in front of their movies, those would be the perfect testing grounds for giving smaller or riskier Lego themes the cinematic treatment.- 97 replies
