Once again, thanks for the nice comments. I really don't think this thing would float :-) The hull is not waterproof. It is intended to be a shelf display piece only.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys. This is my first ship MOC. One day I would like to build a much larger sailing vessel. The technique for curving the hull is something is to use brick 1x2 pieces in the following fashion Yes, I will admit that the the curvature is not perfect near the front. I suppose when I display it from the side I don't tend to notice it so much. Thanks! Maybe I should join flickr :-)

Hey there, first post to the Town forum. Thought I would share a Lego sailboat model I made in approximate minifig scale. It is based on a Benetau Cyclades 43.4 The inspiration for this was watching the sailing journey of La Vagabonde https://www.youtube....LjIzFnWsDQOv4ww The sails can be rolled out and are made out of a plastic bag. The sewing string rigging is the only other non-lego part. Here is a digital rendering Full instructions and parts list can be found on rebrickable http://rebrickable.c...t/lego-sailboat

Ultra Small Forklift - Muravi
motomatt replied to mahjqa's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This is just incredibly fabulous on all levels I had previously built a small forklift to piggy back onto the back of a B-train flat bed trailer, but the functionality you've achieved in the small form factor is simply stunning. I'm quite impressed with the POC leafsprings design. I wonder how permanently disfigured the 2x16 plates would look after the weight has been applied for a few weeks, and if eventually they would stress fracture under the same load. I would be tempted to try this out except I don't think it would work well on a smaller scale truck using a plate length less than 1x 12-16 studs.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys. I found that using six rechargable batteries (which have a lower voltage) produced slower rotation when driving one or two XL motors. So, adding two more AA batteries raises the output to 9-10 volts and results in more horsepower for the trucks It all fits underneath the hood. The color scheme came about since I already had a yellow/black truck, a red/blue/white truck, I thought doing something in orange would be a bit more challenging and unique... and black obviously goes well with orange. I usually just drive the forward most rear axle on my trucks since it's always on a flat surface. With one additional step you could drive both axles like a real truck. http://bricksafe.com/files/motomatt/Custom%20Lego%20Peterbilt%20379/instructions/peterbilt379_rear_drive_axle.png I did not even attempt to add suspension to the trailer. Before this, I created my trailers with suspension and so I thought I would do this one without any to see the end-result. Also, the first iteration of the dump trailer only had two axles. The bonus of squeezing an additional axle for a more realistic look came about when I shifted the geometry of the linear actuators and the dump trailer pivot point upon finding that I needed to provide a better angle to push the dump container upwards. Ideally the extra axle would be liftable... but that was a bit too much. I think the biggest challenge of the build was to find a compromise between achieving the maximum raised angle of the dump container, and the ability to actually put any weight in the trailer to dump. The tilting dump container was constructed to be as light as possible. As it is, loaded with a pound and a half of cereal it's close to the limit of being able to raise up with two linear actuators. If it were loaded with sand or rocks it would not be able to go up. Of course, it would be nice to be able to utilize a giant 3D printed linear actuator and place it on top of the fifth wheel of the truck for more realism... like bricksonwheels display dump trailer.

My construction equipment 42030 wheel loader and ultimate 8043 excavator needed a dump truck... but I figured a detachable tilting dump trailer would be even better. So here it is in orange and black. Here is a video showing some of the operation About a year ago I built my first MOC, a yellow and black Peterbilt with a liftable axle. Since then I learned how to improve many parts of it and I incorporated them in this model. This Peterbilt looks similar to the older one at first sight but has too many changes and updates to list. I've got a custom battery box which uses eight rechargable AA batteries and the goal was to fit it all under the hood. The gear shifter activates the head lights, roof lights, tail lights, as well as a PF connector at the rear used to connect to the trailer. Caterpillar 390F + Tow Haul
motomatt replied to shineyu's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It's just awesome. Some comments on the trailer... I'm not an expert but in my experience studded beams are stronger than studless and offer less flexing for something like your long trailer. When I built a lowboy trailer similar to Ingmar's lowboy, I used an "illegal" technique where I inserted some small cut rubber band strips in between some adjacent beams to try produce a neutral bending/cupping of the trailer frame without any load... loaded the flex would not be as severe in the opposite direction.- 25 replies

This is a really great truck with fine attention to detail! My next truck will probably be a european cabin style truck based on an Actros 4x2. Looking at the digital render, I'm not sure how the leaf spring suspension is working as I don't see where the resistance or flex is coming from. Thus far, I'm not aware of anyone successfully replicating practical leaf spring style suspension in lego.

Liftable Axle
motomatt replied to Kman860's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I did one on a Peterbilt 379 using a rotating gear. http://bricksafe.com/pages/motomatt/Custom%20Lego%20Peterbilt%20379/instructions Also on a flat bed trailer using a similar mechanism. http://bricksafe.com/pages/motomatt/Btrain_flatbed/instructions Ingmar did one on his lowboy trailer using a rubber band driven lever design. -

Great truck... but a truck without a trailer is like Santa's reindeer with no sleigh :-) -
I really like this truck! You build some great stuff. Although I don't have a 42043 Arocs, I would rather build your truck than the Arocs (if instructions were available). Personally I prefer PF over pneumatics because it is easier to remotely operate.

Efferman's Custom Parts
motomatt replied to efferman's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Personally, it would be nice to be able to make an authentic functioning tilting dump trailer to fit onto the back of a 1:17 scale truck. This would mean that the actuator could be up to about 14 studs in length when retracted. But honestly, any scale would be better than not having a multi-stage telescoping linear actuator at all -
Efferman's Custom Parts
motomatt replied to efferman's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Wonder if it's feasible to create a multi-stage telescoping linear actuator like the one used for tilting dump trailers. Perhaps a pneumatic one might be more fitting. Has anyone seen anything like this suitable for lego? -
Took it out in the snow with snow chains and I still got stock... maybe a build of a wrecker / tow truck might be in order

Wheel slippage
motomatt replied to aminnich's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Milan is spot on. Has nothing to do with the power or gearing. The weight of the trailer is not getting loaded onto the truck's fifth wheel because of the angle of the liftarm(s) connecting the trailer body to the king pin. Try to remove one set of trailer tires to leave it with one working axle and you should see it working. To fix it, you need to somehow lower the height of the liftarm going from trailer to king pin (or raise height of fifth wheel... by inserting "Technic bush 1/2 smooth" to kingpin axle) so that the truck's axles end up bearing more weight. You also need to consider that there will be considerable flex in the same liftarm... this will cause the trailer's front-most axle to bear more load and the rear-most axle to tend to float in the air. -

Great truck with great proportions to the real one and very nice details! I'm wondering what is the part to make the chrome rings around the gas tanks? Is it a sticker over 6091 "Brick, Modified 1 x 2 x 1 1/3 with Curved Top". If so, is it a lego sticker or custom chrome striping? -
I saw this on flickr a few days ago and I was blown away. I'm a big fan of BricksOnWheels trucks and this is at the pinnacle of lego modeling :-) I wish I could see it in person some day. 2LegoOrNot2Lego's truck and trailer are simply awesome also.
