  1. I'm going to have to go against the grain and state that I do not like this review... ...because I have the CLASS sat in a box right next to me but I can't build it for another week, and after reading this review I really really want to! Crisp and clean photography, as expected for you Jim. It's a little worrying to see that lime literally is the new yellow (colour variation), but the set really is flagship-worthy, and in any other year it would rightly be the highlight of the releases.
  2. Great spot, I was a bit puzzled as to why the Claas wasn't in the Technic line. With certain current events reducing the potential saving on European Amazon discounts, this should be the best price for anyone [in the UK] who doesn't want to wait for the better part of a year. I've ordered mine to pick up tomorrow. Time to see what these tyres are made of* *Anyone who replies with "rubber" will have a large tub of Mega Blocks waiting for them at home...
  3. She knew exactly how to punish him then! Just the mere thought of losing all their Lego should be enough to keep any AFOL's libido in check
  4. Congratulations! Unfortunately the budget didn't stretch to two, but I will be eagerly looking forward to how this progresses.
  5. Yeah, I can only add to the temperature woes; it's currently 32° at my desk, and that's the shaded area! Luckily I haven't built anything recently, because I tend to leave my Lego out overnight and if any soft parts (pneumatic tubing mostly) were directly under the skylight then I think they would have suffered by now...
  6. Gamepad support and battery-only mode, those are two fantastic additions. I'll keep the interest up as much as I can and hope that the typical near-end surge gives you the funding you need!
  7. Ironically, the fact that so much power can be derived from one BuWizz makes me far less inclined to back it for two of them... but I do want this to succeed and I wouldn't mind putting a bit more towards the funding goal, up to what I would have paid for one BuWizz if it could already be purchased. As for the timing, I seem to remember SBrick's Kickstarter launching late May/early June 2014, so it's not a huge difference. Of course, SBrick didn't have the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Bucket Wheel Excavator, Claas Xerion and Volvo EW160E as competitors for AFOLs' cash!
  8. That's an understandable response, and one I would agree with ... mostly. But this has to be balanced with commercial appeal because ultimately Joe Public are worth far more in terms of sales (and therefore the future direction of Technic sets) than us AFOLs are, as the sold-out-in-most-places 42056 demonstrates - despite what most of us consider to be serious flaws, it is seemingly no less popular for it. If we do see a UCS-style line for supercars and it continues the success started by the 911 GT3 RS, could we then see "space" in the regular Technic lineup for more obscure models?
  9. Doesn't the 919 have a turbocharged V4, and not a V8? Apart from that though, it's looking good so far!
  10. Here are the questions I have: 1) How goes the development if the Android app? Hopefully there can be something learnt here from the troubles Vengit had with the SBrick - which is working flawlessly for me now, but it took over a year to get there 2) As other have asked, are there any plans for hardware controller integration? Again, even when my SBrick was fixed it didn't see much use until I could pair my controller to it (thanks again imurvai), so having this out of the box would be great 3) Does everyone backing at higher tiers get the $5 tier "secret" reward? I do love me some secrets Also, it does seem rather curious that the early bird offer for 2 x BuWizz ends up costing more per unit then the early bird for one ... anyone who looks at the PPU for both tiers would probably only back one as I have done. However I don't think you can change it now and I assume you had your reasons for picking the prices you have used. Regardless, I have backed it for one BuWizz. Hopefully it will be fully funded in due course.
  11. I'd back this to last longer than 23 hours 57 minutes! Nice MOC, you've captured the essential lines of the TS050 well. I'm a particular fan of turning the red panel round to better recreate the sculpted sidepod.
  12. Whoops, I read that as 42042, my bad I would still give the Unimog a look though, there's a thread on here where someone made an "Ultimate Unimog" out of all the best fixes and mods. Oh, 8455 is also worth your time. It's quite old now, but legendary for the sheer volume and complexity of pneumatics (10 cylinders!).
  13. I can think of a few, but if I were you I would look for these first: 8110 - A fine set on its own (albeit with a glaring flaw - it's steering), but the sheer scope and ease of modding the set makes it stand out. 42043 - Like 8110, but more recent. In particular, the chassis and steering stand out as solid, clever pieces of design. 8258 - Still one of the best looking vehicles TLG has designed, and provides some excellent functionality on top.
  14. Yeah, V2 receivers are the better choice for replacing the SBricks, as they were introduced to handle the current draw from two L-motors. Good to see another AFOL brought into the fold!
  15. Well unless Lego have gone back to wooden toys, then it's not on Porsche's UK shop at least...
  16. Ah Sariel, where would AFOLs be without your acerbic wit and furry eye candy?! There's probably some bias in this comment because your opinion on the Porsche is very close to my own, but your review explained everything clearly and you presented your thoughts concisely. The 3 stars for price has probably come from the segment near the end of the video where Blakbird says that in his opinion $300 is a decent price because it cost him more to build his supercar MOCs, all of which had fewer pieces, and most of them were 1:10 as opposed to 1:8. On the other hand, I'm as confused about the 5-star building experience as you are! Jim talks about trying to capture the overall experience (from unboxing to building) in his review, so there may be a bit of this in the decision.
  17. This review is about as comprehensive as I could have hoped for. In particular I really liked the questions from various members to add/clarify information about the set - would you consider doing this for the other 2H sets? As for the Porsche, I'm in the unusual position of wanting it to do well so we are more likely to see future "Technic UCS" sets, but not wanting it to buy it myself because the well-documented issues are deal breakers for me. It seems to be "ultimate" in looks only, and while I recognize that this is more than enough for many people, I am not one of them. Even at a reduced price (e.g. 75-80%) this set isn't appealing to me at the moment. Thanks for the heads up Jim. If only TLG did as good a job with the Porsche as you did with its review!
  18. I do hope there isn't a massive glut of traffic tomorrow leading to the site going down in the first week of June! Having said that though, I will be eagerly getting back to reading the 1999-2000 updates in between all the Porsche reviews dropping tomorrow.
  19. In almost any other 2H releae the Porsche would be top of my list. However, I only have £500 left for Lego and I want the Class. And the BWE. And the Volvo... 7000 more parts and (hopefully) 3 excellent models for my collection!
  20. I've just spent £120 on mine, and I was quite pleased with that! I'm as pleased for you as I am disappointed in myself ...
  21. Clearly, God/fate/karma/the statistical distribution of energy in the observable universe* needed a few more weeks to agonise over the choice of which model it wants you to build next! Here's hoping for a brick-filled recovery *Delete as appropriate
  22. This isn't meant as a joke or an insult, so in the kindest way possible - welcome to the Internet, JDL. You do something others find amusing (which you should rightly be happy about), other people like it, they copy you and propagate it, other people find it funny, they copy and propagate it, etc. and all of a sudden a meme is made - or, put less grammatically correct but perhaps more appropriately, a meme is you. Anyone who's seen it already becomes tired of it while those who haven't seen it instantly love it. The point is, generally speaking (i.e. IP issues notwithstanding) once it's in the public domain it's out of your hands. That also means that you should not feel bad in any way because other people are tired of it; that's up to them, not you. It's in the lap of the gmods now.
  23. At the risk of earning Jim's ire, my experiences mostly line up with what Kelkschiz and deetha have described, although with an increasing number of academies in the UK more local governments are handing over the money to trusts, therefore ridding themselves of any further accountability and oversight. The budgets won't have increased, but with a private enterprise in charge all of a sudden the general public becomes more amenable to saving money from essential services (like paying staff and keeping the building upright) to put towards shiny new toys*. I've seen senior management come out of five-figure week-long training sessions and keep their EV3/MoreToMaths/StoryStarter sets MISB, while blasting the other teachers for genuinely not having the time to get to grips with them. Thankfully there are plenty of examples of the other side of the coin, genuinely passionate teaching staff who make do with decades-old RCX and NXT bricks - and just plain old System bricks - but still deliver inspiring lessons that open the student's eyes to what can be achieved with Lego. *I apologize for using this term on a Lego AFOL forum of all places, but this is still the prevailing view of Lego Education and Lego in education. But as long as TLG get their money I guess it doesn't matter, right?
  24. Here's the embed: I must join the chorus of chassis/underside pics, that's where the real genius lies! The exterior is spot on though, particularly at the back.
  25. I actually thought this was an April Fool's at first - Grum not building a Technic model surely has to be a windup If you don't mind expanding on it, I would be interested to know how System building presents different challenges for you compared to Technic. Regardless though I will be eagerly awaiting the next update.
