    For better traction, you want the batbox to be over your driving wheels (in this instance, your Train Motor), unless both bogies are powered, then you want the weight evenly distributed.

    It is a custom piece not made by Lego, so there is no part number. There are some good MOCs out there of EOTL buffers, just look around on the Ideas Pool or MOC pool on Flickr, there's sure to be some there.

    Maybe the IR sensor was obstructed and the signals had to reflect off of the walls to get to it.
